In this video, I use the brand new ChessUp 2 board to play against an online opponent on chess.com. The game featured a highly strategic and instructive battle emerging from a London System which led to an incredibly intense climax.

Having to move your opponents' pieces doubles the time pressure
This is why these physical boards suck
@@AvocadoTheBugCatshutup, then use less time or go Up a time notch
@@Zzzzx7 using less time would actually worsen the problem
@@AvocadoTheBugCatThere are automatic boards, but they're really slow. Playing a longer time control like 30min should fine, though.
Like someone else said this is perfect for 15+10. Fastest possible might be 5+5
this feels like a lock picking lawyer video
Eric should play another so that we know it wasn't a fluke.
This is IM Eric Rosen. And I'm always looking to Stafford Gambit my opponents. Today we'll be showing off the ChessUp board....
Someone stole my bike
Pin arrr Pawn 3 is binding
@@soob5856 After all this time, they still haven't corrected the flaw?
This is the perfect type of ad, and the only type I’m willing to watch.
Fairness, watching UA-cam these days is like watching a video of ads
it looks viable to play on 15+10 time control
That’s how I play on my Chessnut air.
Bc8? Somewhere in Russia, Kramnik is doing the procedure.
I found watching an otb game was refreshing and enjoyable rather than the usual 2D we have become accustomed to. Thank you for sharing this demo of the boards I am waiting for.
Hello Eric,
despite the critics of potential time management problems (Because of moving the opponent's pieces), I really like watching you play the Board from your actual realistic perspective just like in an OTB game. I would like to see more. Maybe even with a friend who moves the opponents pieces. But don't let the friend tell you good moves😅
Unfortunately having to move your opponent's pieces, especially in a time scramble, is a *no go* for me.
Shouldn't they be able to address that by giving some time (1 second?) where both clocks are frozen after a move?
@@AndrewJensI just think the other player would have to enter some kind of format where they know that’s going to be the case.
Reminds me of when I was a kid. I got a Harry Potter wizard’s chess set for Christmas. The first thing I did was say out loud “pawn to e4”. And obviously nothing happened. I’ve wanted a self-moving chess board ever since. Haha
@@NicholasJens haha 😂
These boards are a lot better for longer time controls with increment.
The kings have pointy crowns. They look like queens.
It's a cross on top - that's pretty standard...
@timm439 The queen has a coronet. The king is supposed to have a crown.
@@JiveDadsonyeah the cross is really obvious
I really like the exercise of having to visualize the moves based on verbal notation alone. Not having had many OTB opportunities, especially against serious players, I have always had the crutch of the online board and arrows. This style of video is amazing. Thank you Eric!!
That small detail of releasing the piece to register the move is so good... im excitied to recieve this board from the kick starter campaign
Love this style Eric, feels so cozy! Maybe you can try with increment next time 😁
i think this is like playing in mini berserk mode as it starts ticking your time down once the opponent has moved and you have to replicate the opponent's move on the board on your own time. one lazy solution would be to freeze eric's clock for one or two seconds to compensate for the move replication down time. more seconds than that would turn into eric's favor in terms of getting more time to think for his move.
I bought 2 with carry bags a while back on their Kickstarter. I hope I get them soon.
Nice game! Very instructive. Was really rooting for you at the end there xD
MORE CHESSUP GAMES PLS
0:56 “I think my rating is in the 2400’s..” That’s all? Lol. I really enjoyed this, liked and subbed. I will have a little look at this board, it looks very interesting.
in this scenario your time shouldn't start until you move your opponents piece I think, but i guess that could be abused as well
You almost need a partner to help move the pieces. But it’s still going to be slower.
I'd watch more of this, even though it's an ad. Idk I find it more interesting than usual
Ouch! There is no contrast between the black pieces and the black squares... and that makes it very hard to concentrate on the board/position.
That being said, thank you for taking the time to show us and demonstrate that ChessUp 2 Smart Board. While I can see how it might appeal to some people, possibly kids, I can see it's nothing I want or desire.
It's not about appealing to kids. It's for folks who want to play OTB more. If you plan to play tournaments irl, playing a greater proportion of your games OTB is going to help with your board vision.
Right about contrast for the black pieces and squares. Can you put your own pieces on this board / mod your own set to make it compatible. (Does it use magnets at the base?)
The opponent’s clock should stop only when the physical move is made on the board. Otherwise, it creates an unfair disadvantage for the player making the moves.
This is cool, I’m glad you have a sponsor. I’d love to see more OTB videos.
Visually it’s appealing and I feel like even though we stare at screens all day it’s better for the eyes and when we want to play tournaments we will actually be OTB.
Any tips and tricks for OTB play or studying you suggest?
That was fun. I think I would probably play with slightly longer time control haha.
I LOVE THIS. I think I’ll definitely try and get one. I prefer OTB chess but never have anyone to play with
What a pleasure to watch, thanks Eric. I only hope ChessUp brings out a maple/walnut version with the same technology inside. The current (plastic, right?) version looks cheap and I assume the pieces feel light.
As a noob (1000) who's been watching your videos all summer. This format seemed more difficult to follow. And I initially did not want to watch. I'm just interested in the chess board.
I really like this format now that I've watched for 8 minutes. It has forced me to look at the board differently. I appreciate it. It's probably going to be a tough sell for others. Ty
thank you once again for your posts, their instructional value and their underlying philosophy and the overall timbre of your endeavors.
10:06 it's nice that it points out to you that you need not waste tempos and could have played Bb5. Any particular reason for not doing that?
10:58 you are trying hard to waste tempos.
I think you are distracted by making the video.
50 seconds later you illustrate the concept again. 2 wasted tempos.
I think making this video distracted you
that was actually really cool. they need to add some time tweaks for moving pieces...
Grats on all these sponsorship deals. Love seeing the channel grow.
The checkmating lights were pretty cool
Does it support Lichess?
Yes works with lichess too
Great content!! This is good practice to visualize and watch games for over the board chess
Does anyone else have trouble “seeing” a regular board after playing online so much?
I try to switch between online and OTB so that get use to seeing 3D board vision as well
That's exactly why this is a good idea - helps with OTB board vision. It's why I got one.. arriving in the next few days! I think I'm going to create a different account though, since I'm expecting my OTB rating to be worse.
@@timm439 I don't even have this board ( way to expensive for me to buy) but I mirror my and my opponents moves on a regular board while playing.
This is the reason I’m getting this board.
their is a certain amount a time to get use to a small board after playing on a set with one and a half or two inch squares. it can be a problem.
I would buy that in a second if the opponent pieces moved for me
Awesome board! They should make brown pieces instead of black for better identifying.
or green squares maybe?
Getting mine in a week, can't wait. Can't believe they managed to get it to us before xmas
This set costs over 3 hundred and the pieces aren't even wooden😂
Wooden pieces can’t be touch sensitive.
@@RikMaxSpeed uh ive played a tournament with pieces that kind of knew.. but i mean its not really too important as your opponent is there to call the arbiter or when playing online it literally doesnt matter
Pretty sweet boards. This video is just in time for Xmas.. although I play chess exclusively on the app.. I would have to make another acct to practice my board vision
Got to add increment to move their pieces
Hi Eric, does the board support puzzles/lessons/studies?
"..I can't draw arrows.." Nothing a dry wipe board marker can't solve ;)
Not sure if a typo, or if that's a phrase you've only ever heard spoken and never written, but it's a "white board," not a "wipe board."
Totally reasonable way to think about that object. I am not trying to insult you or talk down to you. Just wanted to let you know in case you didn't! Cheers.
@kruksog They have a variety of names, dry wipe or dry erase, meaning you don't need a wet cloth to wipe or erase them. But whiteboard marker is another name
the promotion not working made me nervous asf ngl
Damn i really love that board, but 335 dollars is absurd. Now it will be need years, that normal people can buy it way cheaper.
That bord is really dope! More videos of this I like
How well does this board work while doing game reviews using the engine?
We need more of these videos!❤
I want that thing for Christmas bro
What happens if you try to make an illegal move?
The board calls 911.
It flashes, similar to how it did at the queen promotion. Eric showed more about the board in the first video.
@@NoNamer123456789 harsh.
Already bought two of them on KS, can’t wait!
can you change the led colors ?
I understand why it can't be that way, but I wish the timer would only start counting down after you're done moving your opponent's piece.
Is there a way to turn off the possible move colors on this board?
The creators once said that there would be such an option.
Hello. If I played with my friend a live game on this board, can it analyze the game?
"I can't draw arrows."
Sometimes, the arrows get a bit much.
This board is really cool but could be improved with an LCD overlay so that it could allow the live player to play with real pieces and the online player to have their pieces displayed on the board. This would mean that the live player wouldn’t have to lose time moving the opponent’s pieces.
That would look very… odd haha
I can see myself playing on that board instead of the phone
does this work with lichess?
I'm very sad because they still don't make shipments to Uruguay :( I need one
Just ordered a board. Thanks for the 10% off :-)
Who needs arrows when you can just point with your finger?!?
Also, that promotion attempt almost cost the game.
I think it is too "colorful", looks a bit distracting. But overall nice features- but no need to move away from chessnut (air, air plus, evo, etc.) With their vision technology (on the evo) you can use whatever chess websites you like. But it is more expensive, coming with a more or less complete tablet.
Your opponent's move should be automatically made by the board.
What would happen if a player under promotes to have a third knight for example ?
What happens if you move a piece to the wrong square?
He did when he promoted the queen.
Great vid great game!
extremely intense game
POV Chess is incredible, I love this
This board is awesome! Can you play others or just the engine? can you use it for practice and puzzles? Can you use it to walk you through positions and best responses?
He was playing a real opponent…..
Eric's a typical guy.. who needs to read the instructions?.. oops, I guess we do!
Neat concept, but it is really hard to see the black pieces at a glance
I was one of the kick starters. Mine I’m informed should arrive to me in the UK just b4 Christmas 😊
playing opponent's move should be rewarded by a few seconds increment..
seems like a great gift for kids learning to play chess, or maybe someone, who doesn’t know how to play chess, can finally play against their partner who does
im guessing the main selling point of this board is the ability to play online games with a physical board, good for folks who want to improve their visualisation in over-the-board tournaments without a physical playing partner. a conventional physical board would probably be nicer to play on and cheaper
It's good for longer games
For the opponent the timings will look suspicious)) Especially when there is a pause in promotion and taking backs)
Mum look I can't premove anymore
What’s the shipping time on this bad boy?
Do more of these! Very fun to watch!
I want one of these so much!
That was fabulous!
I want to like it but i dont. A cool novelty for longer time control maybe. The pieces look tacky and the black squares have no contrast.
You know, to simplify the board so the user doesn’t have to move the opponents pieces they could have made this with a sturdy plastic film that covers the 12 and 78 rows that the sensors could detect so the user can life the respective pieces off the board, and replace the ‘crosses’ inside the squares with a picture that combines all the pieces into one frame so the computer can use the LED to light the proper channels to display the piece on a square.
That would be atrocious.
Good Tech! That is clever!
Na blitze ta szachownica jest do niczego!Mam tracić swój cenny czas na ruchy przeciwnika?
Ja kupiłem to szachownice właśnie dlatego że gram głównie 15+10. Granie na tym blitzy pewnie będzie frustrujące.
I wish the opponent’s pieces moved on their own
I would smash the board against the wall sooner or later after some painful time scramble loss :(
i love these videos
Why would I move the opponents piece? This is very stupid.
The board's nice and all, but where can I buy a ChessUp2 Beard?
Eh, as he said, link is in the description…..
@beerbaron3003 That's a board. I wanted a beard.
Having to move your opponents pieces puts you at a disadvantage. Also, the design of the pieces isn’t great. Could be better with some updates
Just bought this
it looks awesome but it is $280 :(
10:05 isn't Bb5 faster?
10:58 What am I missing? Isn't Bd5, Be8, Bg6 better after taking the pawn?
Downside of Bb5 is that now your rook is somewhat tied to the defense of the bishop, it doesn't matter much, since after Rbxa6 white's rook would be pinned along the a file, but there was no reason to complicate things. There was no rush, not much white could do with the extra move.
@@SomeoneSomewhere42069 I agree, after the rooks are traded Bb5 to e8 to g6 is simply a faster way to get back. Eric is just thinking about taking the same path in reverse, not registering other options at that moment.
@@sagov9 That's kinda my point though. White has no counter to Bb5 right away, that I could see at least. The only thing I saw was rerouting the Knight to attack the bishop, but that wouldn't be possible. Kb1, Ka3 attacks the bishop if it's on Bb5, but the Knight wouldn't have enough moves to get there
How would promoting a pawn work?
Just like you saw on the video.
UA-cam just told me I'm in the top 0.1% of your UA-cam fans hi I'm Jon since I started watching your channel I've grown a lot better chess player nowadays my UA-cam recap told me that 25.5% of my watch time on UA-cam was watching you but it's more like 90% because my children also use my account. I just wanted to tell you to boost your ego cuz you're doing a good job
This is a double scramble :) - you need to quickly move both sides of physical pieces - your and your opponents :)
All moves are done on your time which is unfair! Why not make the clock pause until the opponent’s piece is moved???😮
nice endgame
