  • Overview of a vintage 1957 Tektronix Type 545 Oscilloscope.
I've had this 'scope since 1992 and it was "sorta" working at that time. Needs a complete going through of the capacitors now. Its completely original inside. My experience with another slightly older scope of this series is those "bumble-bee" and "black beauty" capacitors need to go or it will be a nightmare of constant issues of failures and flaky operation.
For a few years around 2010-2012 I had it in my office cube at work for display and had the info sheet seen at the end of the video. Inflation adjusted prices are now out of date!

I used to use these when I was in the USAF in the early 1970's. As I recall, they came with a small roll of silver bearing solder in case you needed to repair it. The ceramic terminal blocks were pretty neat.

These old instruments are an example of the quality of workmanship and design that made Tektronix oscilloscopes the standard of the industry. When I started out in college in electrical engineering in 1970, I save up enough money to purchase a used 545A and a CA plugin. To this day, I uses my 545A because it is a very easy to use even though I own more oscilloscopes than any sane person should have.

I prefer using my 545B over my mid-1980's Leader. This fine piece of mid-century high-tech is still better to use than some later equipment, if you have the space for it of course. the large size and logical spacing of the dials is part of the pleasure in using it though. If it was all smaller it wouldn't be as good.
