Chris Evans joins U2 in New York during the first leg of their Popmart Tour to chat with with the band. For this he is granted access to the Lemon. As you can hear, Bono's voice is struggling. He'd been experiencing persistant problems with his voice around this time.
Recorded the day after their New York gig, this film was broadcast as the end section of the TFI Friday show on the 6th June.
"Rock and Roll shouldn't be boring, shouldn't be retro, shouldn't mean nostalgia. We've gotta kick it into the next century a little bit."
The new motto for what rock music and bands must do in 2018 and onward.

To BONO. I LOVE the interview. The way you explained the different types of music, such as ROCK, POP, TECHNO, and more. U2 ARE THE BEST BAND EVER AND ALWAYS WILL BE. All U2 albums are brilliant masterpieces, even Pop. It might be my least favorite but it's good. You just have to be in the mood to listen to it.
The summer of 1997 when POP came out I was 18 and had the time of my life and I rocked that album all summer long, I was getting into car audio and put together like a $3,000 system which was a lot of money at the time I was so happy when I got it done, it sounded amazing
Well, for me POP was their last great album. Then they sold out themselves to the media.
Pop is their rawest, most risque taking album. It really rocks, they're most underrated work.

Cool to see this. After the PopMart opener in Vegas in 97, the rest of the tour was pretty much ignored by MTV and the media in the US. MTV had all but stopped playing videos from the Pop album after Staring at the Sun. It was before the internet really blew up too so you didn’t get a lot of news/footage from the tour that year.

Bono was annoyingly cool back in the 90's era. Really quick witted with charisma. Liam Gallagher slated U2 this year saying they've never been rock n' roll, I think they were back then. Liam can barely string a sentence together though, Bono always had a witty reposte for any question.
I do wonder what Bono said that made Liam so angry after they were good friends in the 90’s. Probably told him to take his pills or something.

Their last really good albums were Pop in 1997 and All that you can't leave behind in 2000. After that they just lost it although they still have some good songs.Bono's voice changed a lot because of smoking and drinking and their music changed too but what bothers me is that now they have become completely different. All they care about is politics and brainwashing their fans.

Bono referring to tap Guinness, which not everybody has the luxury of flying to Dublin to experience (wich i have). The modern pub draught cans are pretty decent. Guinness in a bottle just doesnt work.
U2's at their peak. Althought Pop is not their masterpiece, it's been always a grower for me. I love the creativity on that album. All that you can Leave Behind was kind of a turn-off.

Adam nailed it...on its own merits...Pop was complete GARBAGE. it was more about the tour, which incorporated songs from all eras.

Pop is different things to different people, I like some songs from it and feel that others needed more time to work on. Pop wasn't garbage, garbage albums don't reach number 1 in 35 countries. It was merely unfulfilled potential. Wouldn't say they went mainstream at all after it, they changed their tune. Roman clearly hasn't heard No Line on the Horizon cause that has some cracking songs on it which are very similar to Pop. Music is different things to different people, but it's just a wonderful thing that U2 has a catalogue which is so diverse
Excuse me? That was their last great momento of inspiration. Since then they´ve been dead, or nearly, except for some glimpses. Ok atomic bomb managed with the nostalgia thing. Period. Buy some new ears. Pop must have been the best of that year after ok computer. They took risks, sometimes failed.
