Both Chaplin and Laurel were English men with the spark of genius.
USA rejected Chaplin, cowardly while he was out of the country in 1952, accusing him of being a communist, which made him reside for the rest of his life in Switzerland. Then after that slap in the face, they made him an award in 1972, recognition of his achievements in film . How hypocritical are the Americans. Chaplin was not a communist, how could a person who built such an enterprise as United Artists be a communist. It was ridiculous. He said he was "only in favour of a roof over everyone's head".
Stan Laurel was from Ulverston Cumbria, and later Stockton on Tees in the north east of England, a small town famous for the first Stevenson's steam railway (Stockton to Darlington) of the world and the striking match (John Walker and the Friction match in 1826 on sale in 1827) from Finkel street Stockton.
Laurel was made famous in his collaboration with Oliver Hardy and they, alongside Chaplin made many wonderful comedy movies.
They were pioneers of movies from black and white silent , to sound. USA is still hypocritical as it always was, nothing has changed.
