Just stumbled on this clip, I was working on that job site when part of it was filmed in Manchester by the sea in Massachusetts. I stripped, repaired, and sanded the handrail of the stairwell you could see in the foreground. Briefly got to talk to Tommy, seems like a nice guy even off camera.

As with most older homes, the window is offset because it would look odd from the outside if they changed it. Basically it's an unspoken rule that stairs and closets don't matter from the inside. The home was designed so only larger rooms lined up with windows that were evenly placed from the outside view. If you needed balance on the outside there might be a window in a closet to maintain that!

It occurs to me the window may have been central to the stair well but a wall was built to the left of the window frame ... I didn't see hear it mentioned so apologies if I missed it.
It occurred to me too that the aesthetic appeal was somewhat lacking but the window had to be "conserved" as opposed to restored.
We have similar here but there would have been loads of pictures taken and buildings archaeologist on hand to examine the frame as it was dismantled, taking pictures of joints, nails, paint scrapings, any insect remains etc, etc.
Possibly the local historical society folks wanted it kept just so because that window design, and position, may have been a feature/trademark of a local architect?
Our builders love finding "archaeology" ... work has to stop until it has been surveyed, and excavated molecule by molecule almost.

I agree, it's ugly interior wise; but; It may be lining up on the exterior...It's centered on the down staircase so. That may have been the top landing at one time...Our houses in the east, especially large ones, are often remodeled many times over a century, or more...:)...

Step 1 - Take matching trim from other room.

      Project 2OH9
... you can type "reproduction wood trim" into Google or Bing to see what's out there or have a shop make it from a sample, but it's not cheap. The other trick is to borrow pieces from inside a closet where it doesn't show then replace that with something easier to obtain.

@@Pallidus_Rider ... you can search out woodworking shops or a millwright. Maybe it can be reproduced using a sample or even a good photo. Then of course there are demolition / salvage shops that specialize in saving old stuff. There was one in Stamford Ct for years and you could wander through their inventory looking for clawfoot tubs or old doors / windows / trim, etc. Sadly they closed up a few months ago because the property was more valuable than the 3rd generation business.

@@Pallidus_Rider ... one last thought here... seek out a cabinet maker and pose the question. They may have a recommendation for a mill work shop. Quite often these shops are run by a small business guy out of his home so it's a word of mouth thing. Depending on the style of trim it might be duplicated on a router table.

Can't believe that whoever did the demo didn't use caution and save all of the old window trim. Very valuable. Also I would of moved the window to the right a inch or so. I couldn't tell from the view but definitely needs to be centered to the stairs. Just the way my brain works. Otherwise great repair, breaks looked clean with no splits, shocking.
