I'm not really a manga reader, but I saw these books on the shelf and fell in love instantly. Already half finished with the 1st hardcover and plan to go back for the 2nd soon.
I've just started reading Manga with Berserk and each time I go pick up a new volume, I see Drifting Classroom on the shelf and it's always so tempting to buy just because of the covers!
Thanks man this is a brilliant overview. I love Ito and he cites Umezz as a direct influence so I really want to see what came before Ito's reign as the king horror mangaka. Really enjoyed your commentary as well in light of Hiroshima. It was the 75th anniversary this year of Hiroshima and Umezz is 84, as you said even if Umezz hasn't mentioned it must have been an influence.
I hate when a good manga story ends , its potential is so good that it can continue abit more , rather than some bad manga that stretch the story unnecessarily
Thanks Riley so I just picked up Vol 3 of Tsuge’s works long time coming and waiting seemed like it would never get here worth the wait the edition has extensive historical narrative for each groundbreaking story .
Really like the spotlights you do on the off beat, not too talked about books/series, that are still popular. Really like the introductions you do with the manga series, because without I wouldn't have any context
I try to provide something that I don’t see from other places and something that I would like to watch myself if I was on the fence about buying a book or series. That’s why I try to talk also about the physical build of the volumes, since that’s important to me :)
Yo! Great review. Finished it today! I was surprised at how "now" the theme of children rebuilding this world as a better one, is. Relating to fridays for future and so on. The manga actually explicitly alludes to climate change and environmental pollution etc. a few times (e.g. in the dia-show of the future-humans). And I really liked the heartwarming last sentence of the narrator. Haha, just my two cents. Anyway... Cheers from munich, germany.
Thanks for the great review. Now, I have to have another comic, you evil person. I've been wanting to read more old (that is, pre-90s) manga for a while, and I'd never heard of this series before. That stark, horror-y B&W artwork is so very much my thing and I can't wait to check it out.
The first volume has been in my cart on book depository for about a month now... I think I'll probably pick it up now. Glad I found your channel 😊 as a fan of Junji Ito I did think that this series would be something I'd like too 😅
It's a really solid Lord of the flies-esque manga. Being inspired by LotF is a great thing. It's a great book and a lot of great stories are LotF-esque
That Intro made me sub instantly my man. Nice work. I have these books too and can’t wait to read ‘em. Shared this on Twitter too, couldn’t help myself. Hope it brings in the subs. :-)
Thanks so much! I’ve reached out to a friend to compose an original opening theme song for me so I’m the future I’ll probably have a full two minute version of that published. I appreciate the love so much!
I ran across your vid to see if there was any new publications on this because I've fallen back into my horror manga fixation and TRIED for YEARS to find the paper back...for one, thank you for the fantastic review on the book itself, Im picking these suckers up when I can afford it just on that alone...but also just, I cannot stress enough how on point you are about the analysis of the story and it's influence-I'd argue it's a cornerstone of Japanese Horror in Manga and Film. It's brutal, unforgiving, and has an air of authenticity that you don't see a lot in modern horror.
Parasyte, I Am A Hero, the Lovecraft adaptations from Dark Horse, Gantz, Hellsing. That’s off the top of my head but I’m sure I have more I’ve read and am forgetting
I just finished reading the manga there is a note at the end that states how this is the artists own fear and how he never grew up from being afraid so you must be right
They are beautiful editions. At first I was disappointed a little in the end but as I thought about it was a good ending. Excellent video and very interesting about the mangaka's possible inspirations!
ad0rkab1e I agree about the ending. It’s very sudden but as soon as I put it down and kept thinking about it more and more eventually enjoying it more over time.
I didn't know this existed until a few years back where after reading Junji Ito's "Shiver", I wanted to see what other mangaka there were that did horror and it was an awesome read. I don't reeeeeally care too much for the artstyle of the characters but didn't let that stop me. Finished it in about a few days. I actually didn't know it had these hardcovers until a few days ago so definitely going to be looking to get it once I get up-to-date on Urusei Yatsura.
The worst horror of this manga comes not from the fantastic elements, but the cruel acts of the characters, the madness of human mind. Is a very heartbreaking traumatic experience...
Alsome some Kazuo Umezz manga he is my favourite horror mangaka. I even have both omnibus of Cat Eyed Boy also amazing. & if u ever decided 2 do a video on the seven seas classic collection manga i’d love 2 see that cause i’ve herd they haven’t done well sales wise but i’ve the exact opposite so idk what’s going on? Anyway thanks 4 doing a vid on Umezz’s drifting classroom, so hopefully will get more of his manga🤞 Ultraman, Fourteen love 2 see get picked up.
cold majima00 of those I only own the Devilman HCs so I could talk about that series for sure. Very much hope there’s a reprint of Cat Eyed Boy at some point in the future, or that I can find decently priced copies somewhere!
Is it important to read Cat Eyed Boy 1 before number 2 or is it just short stories, that don't heavily relate to each other? I know a place here in my town, where I could buy Number 2. :)
I got into the series on a whim just based of this being considered a classic... i kinda felt the end was half baked. i was hoping the kids were going to able to return home. But yeah the more I thought about it I liked the message the book end on. This is a series that has alot great moments that stay with you even after you finished the story.
Damn bro! You're thorough with your reviews! This is dope with the facts! If you want to review Lopicana it would make my week! Or month.... Or year... Lol
Thanks for reviewing this manga! I was thinking abt getting this, but now i feel more sure abt picking it up. Also, have you preordered Junji Ito’s Remina?
E Q not yet preordered, as I typically don’t preorder until the end of the month prior to release, but I do have Venus in the Blind Spot preordered for next month.
@@Signal_in_the_noise That's a good one. Kago desperately needs more English physical printings. I've waited on buying Dementia 21 Vol 1 & 2 because theres a boxed set of the two volumes coming in August. It will be a good collectible version to have on my shelf. I've read scanlations of Anamorphosis and Fraction but they still haven't been printed in English. I don't know why. Both deserve North American releases.
I would like to see this series become a anime in the near future because we need more good horror anime series like shiki and monster because most of them are terrible and i hope this series gets an anime adaptation pretty soon
reading this gave me an existential crisis because it reminded me so much of global warming. I always think about how this would be our future if we don't stop our abusive habits towards the environment 😢
Ooh that’s tough. I want to say that this will stay in print and available longer than Akira, assuming you’re talking about the hardcover box set. If talking about the paperbacks then maybe try the first of each?
@@omnibuscollector Thanks for the advice omnibus collector. I was on the fence because I read the first volume of Drifting Classroom and fricken loved it. I don’t remember what I said in this video, but that’s initially how I felt as well. I sat on it overnight before putting my thoughts together and wound up finding it extremely satisfying. Especially when considering historical and cultural influence around it.
