Pro-Palestinian protesters set up encampment at U of T | CP24 Live at Noon for May. 2, 2024

- A number of pro-Palestinian protesters breached a fenced area and set up an encampment on the University of Toronto campus early Thursday, vowing to stay there until their demands are met.
The protesters moved in at around 4 a.m. and set up a few dozen tents on the lawn at King’s College Circle.
The university had erected fencing to prevent an encampment there but the protesters got around it. Several police vehicles quickly arrived on scene but there have been no clashes so far.

CP24 is Toronto's #1 source for breaking news.
Didn't U of T declare that "encampments would NOT be tollerated"? It looks like an encampment to me.
They "broke through" the fence (break and enter), and are now illegally trespassing on privately owned land.
There are also denying access to the grounds to anyone who doesn't agree with them.
This is the cause of the UNITED NATIONS giving terrorists whatever they desire. The UN DAYS ARE NUMBERED.
If a protest's purpose is to draw attention to your concern, then I'd say mission accomplished.
I stand with the students. There's mass killings happening and these students are protesting that. Why do students go to school in the first place if not to question things? This education they are getting on a political level will change them and get them understanding how world politics affects everyone. It will have them thinking like a global citizen.
It doesn't matter if you disgaree with their stance. Once upon a time, during the vietnam war, people were disagreeing with the student's stances even back then. But, the students still prevailed!
I read somewhere in the comments that it's comparing apples and oranges when it comes to the Vietnam war vs what's happening in Palestine right now, but that's absolutely bonkers! It's a world issue. Literally the whole world is watching this conflict because of the mass casualties as well as the politics about the land itself.
Let these students have their encampents and protests. Allow them to speak out against killings.
These students are on the right side of history. They have read up on the issue. They understand what's going on.
There were mass killings in Syria mass killings in Yemen. And a Genocide going on in Sudan right now. But yet the war in Gaza is the only one right.
Great post, unfortunately, it will take a generation for the dustto settle/blood to dry before we collectively learn from the continual turn of history’s revolving ‘meat-grinder’ we somehow continue to venerate 🤦♂️
October 7th denier?
There’s mass killings in Yemen too. Where’s their protest? Funny how Hamas can vow to wipe Israel off the map but you still support them.
Vietnam protestors didn’t prevent people from accessing property they didn’t belong. Nor did they make insipid demands.
These students understand nothing. There is no apartheid in Israel. The only ones who want genocide are Hamas and their supporters. What do you think “From the river to the sea,
Palestine will be free.”, means?
@@pkjohnston bruh, you deny 100 years of history and then say I'm denying 10/7? 😒

Freedom of speech is fundamental to all humans but if the school said no tents and you disobey, that is no more freedom of speech and you cannot correct a wrong with a wrong. All I see is some students with no real study commitment being convinced going against the law is okay. In US student sprayed the police when been removed from their tents. How is that okay ? This war is not in Canada and no one has a right to make it a Canadian issue even if they can have peaceful protest which should never interfere with other peoples life.
Would you have said the same thing when people protested the Vietnam War or segregation with the same kind of encampments? Why are people able to support every cause but the current one?
@@ememememem592 no one should cause a pause in another man’s world for a course specific to you and not something bothering on the population of that place. This is not a student issue, this is not a misdeed from UT or McGill. Why does others need to suffer ? Go protest in Ottawa and make your tent in the governments space not other learners space.

You're free to get on a plane, and go support your brothers and sisters.
Yeah...that worked out well for the Freedom protesters. Lol. Freedom of thought one certainly has. Freedom of speech...not so much.
@@ememememem592Vietnam war was America's involvement. America is a Canada ally therefore Canadian interest would be expected. Palestinians are not Allies of Canada or the United States. War involving Israel and Gaza is international affairs. Stop comparing apples and bananas. This situation is different from Vietnam.
Why they do cover theirs face?
Because they are cowardly.
Because they clearly aren’t that proud
In Post National Canada there’s 30 million Canadians, 14 million homes and 11 million foreigners occupying Canadian homes
There are valid reasons why someone might cover their face while advocating for a cause:
Safety: Facing retaliation from those who disagree is a real concern. Covering their face protects them from harassment or worse.
Privacy: People might have personal reasons for not wanting their identity revealed. This doesn't diminish the validity of their message.
Focus on the Issue: Sometimes the goal is to draw attention to the cause itself, not the individuals behind it. This creates a sense of unity and keeps the focus on the bigger picture.

Can the Canadian universities learn anything by looking south of the border? Or is this "me too stupid" movement? Are these Justin's voters?
Not every Canadian wants to be a southern clown like you
The thing is, these protests won't change anything. Canada is low on the totem pole for making Israel make any changes. And de-fund Israel Corporations? Not going to work either, as companies love money, they don't care if its on the blood of others.
The illegal occupation by the freedumb convoy were not Trudeau voters…you are severely confused!
And the suckers will keep fighting on behalf of their rich Hamas leaders who are enjoying life in Qatar.
How many years will it take for them to stop migrating, losing their families for egotistical men who don't care about its people.
These are indoctrinated young people. This is war on the West and we all need to stick together to overcome this.
Civilized society stands against genocide as it was clearly determined by the International Court ofJustice. The movement of students is in line with such Court decision rooted in the UN Charter, and the ICJ order, Both the UN Charter, and the IJC decision shall be upheld and defended by Canada as Canada is a member of the UN. Canadian domestic law or Police acting within or without the domestic law can not use one or more incidents of violence to violate the UN Charter, the ICJ decision, hence the international law. Such violent incidents, if they actually happened, should be treated in accordance with the law, and should not be tolerated or allowed to happen against anyone including the Jewish people, the Palestinian people or anyone else. Violence has no place in a civilized society, freedom of expression and assembly has all the place to be upheld in a civilized society.
Well quoted
Imagine paying thousands of dollars for tuition and taking loans just to see people on campus supporting a war their country didnt last more than a day.
We know the universities enrol huge numbers of foreign students for the high tuition profits. Do they have the will to restrict illegal activity by those lucrative foreign students?

It’s not surprising that university students are opinionated beyond their own understanding and wisdom. The media are just the same, always choosing and judging on our behalf.

Wasn't it Palestinians who invaded Israel? And killed 1200 Israelies? And kidnapped a couple hundred more? Stay out of Israel and quit chucking missiles at them.
Its a crime if these students r non cdn which some of them are.
There’s no genocide. The only genocide was on Oct 7 and it would still be going on to this day if the IDF didn’t stop them. Have you looked at the population growth in Gaza in the last 40 years? Do u know how many IDF soldiers have died in this war? Why wouldn’t Israel just nuke the place if they wanted to genocide instead of burying their children. Why does Egypt have a liquid-tight border with Gaza? Israel was THE ONLY COUNTRY allowing gazans into it on a daily basis to get work visas and get free healthcare. Why did Egypt or Jordan not offer this? Why are their borders shut tight, even before Oct 7?
@mattl4802 Even if they aren't they are speaking against genocide and apartheid. Btw, international students pay double what Canadian students pay for tuition, which helps the Canadian economy.

My biggest question is this, we have all these protesters calling for fairness for Palestine. But where were they for Ukraine, who has been under attack for a good two years by a dictatorship. Yes, I get that Israel/Palestine has been centuries. But show up for Ukraine as well.
@@amsmith4 Uh, what? Ukraine has been shelling the Donbas for 8 years prior, so where is the response to that? Only up until the last 2 years has that stopped, thanks to Russia. Ukraine is just another US. proxy war, a proxy war the US. is once again, going to lose.
I appreciate your commitment to peaceful coexistence with the Jewish community in Canada. It's important to build bridges.
However, standing with Jewish people doesn't have to mean ignoring the plight of Palestinians. Many Jews, 'like many Canadians,', oppose Zionism because it infringes on Palestinian rights.

*Perhaps we can find common ground in supporting a peaceful two-state solution that respects the rights of both Israelis and Palestinians*
That needs to be accomplished by the Israelis and Palestinians with perhaps some outside mediation. Protesting here in Canada thousands of miles away does nothing but to hurt their cause as they increasingly ramp up their disruptions to people's lives whom the overwhelming majority have little to no connection to the Mideast conflict.
Many if not most Canadians simply see a violent and disruptive group of people damaging property and causing discourse in their nation when we already have enough division and discourse to deal with. Many people who might be sympathetic or neutral have probably turned against this movement by now.
To all those saying it's not a Canadian issue to protest - does it not become one when our taxpayer money funds it?
