Bat From Hell Except it’s not about border control, it’s about quarantining the infected. They’re two very different ideas. As for the supposed criminals crossing over, almost none of them actually commit any crimes inside the US. In fact, the government actually shoots itself in the foot by not recognising these immigrants by institutionally forcing them towards unlawful acts and denying itself tax dollars from their wages.

@@batfromhell4579 It's true that people crossing the border can carry it, but at this point it's in every state in the US, Australia, it's in many EU countries, it's in the UK, it's in South Korea, it's in Japan, it's in most Middle Eastern countries. I'm assuming based on what you've said that you're American, since 'illegals' is a term that only applies to people who are not legally present in a country, and therefore isn't likely the EU.
The United States is already in a giant pile of crap because of sources all over the world, notably not Mexico.
Australia has gotten more cases from the US than from any other country, and this is before the number of confirmed cases in America spiked.
Update: We paid for it, and it fell over in a storm.

The wall was built very long before Genghis Khan was even born, and it was originaly to prevent the northern invaders from attacking, it had changes over the course of history, and it did well over hundreds of years if not more. Most of the northern tribes are nomads, so their speciality is great bowmanship and cavalry(they didn't have heavy sieg weaponry), the wall shuts that down pretty well, it was the only effective way for border communication in the past. I believe Genghis Khan did get through, it is a complicated matter since at the time China was pretty splitted up in terms of Dynasties. Also it was his grandson I believe, Kublai Khan, who actually invade and took over majority of China and created a new dynasty called "Yuan". Not defending Trump's idea here, but don't compare a world wonder to a stupid businessman's political idea of building a wall to stop drug trading and illegal immigration. So saying that "did it do any good the wall to the Chinese", the answer is absolutely yes. The great wall also had cultural and other values to it, besides its military value, meanwhile Trump's wall idea is a joke, and China didn't make another country pay for its wall.
It's like Lewis Black said, "walls became useless when they invented air planes" and he's right.

Something that only just occurred to me as I rewatched this is John Oliver is surprisingly fair to Trump. Especially around here (3:30) where Trump mentions what the wall is made of. He treats the idea seriously, explains what it would cost, and ridicules the lack of competence itself, instead of just ignoring all his ideas. It's a sign of a good presenter that he can keep personal feelings out of there until they're relevant.
Sometimes I wonder how tough it is for John to balance doing that with still being a comedian.
I wonder if he will revisit the issue now that the Biden admin has decided to finish it. I won't hold my breath.

Uh, yeah. But the ones used on borders have *never* worked. The Great Wall of China failed to keep out the mongols. The Berlin Wall didn't stop 5,000 East Berliners from defecting. Even the vast long border fence, with millions of dollars in funding to patrol, on the US - Mexican Border, and after that, it was found that at least 1.5 million illegal immigrants had still managed to make it into the US or Mexico from either side.
The larger they are, the less they work.

It makes America look stupid for messing with other countries on humanitarian reasons but when it comes to how we treat people some how it is different. From Guantanamo to how we treat prisoners and pedophiles, rapists, murders. It matters because we become worst people if do bad things to people. Immigrants are now "illegals" and also the worst people what a joke our country is turning in to. If we want to say we are a good country we need to act like one. And it should probably be noted that he can't legally put tariffs on one specific company, instead just one industry.

it work good in both situations...in Germany it worked so good that they had to tear it down for it to stop working
the wall in germany was just around the western part of Berlin, there were no wall between west and east germany, it was a well secured boarder with fances.
The Great Wall of China did nothing to stop Genghis Khan: he simply went around the wall.
For another wall example: Hadrian's Wall in England was built by the Romans to limit how much those in today-Scotland could raid Roman-occupied territory in Britain. All the raiding groups had to do was go over it or use ships to go around it. Big border walls don't work.
Speaking as a german history nerd. Not well. Attila just kinda went around the wall and Eastern Germans got stupidly inventive (you know those one man u-boats that are used for scuba diving? Yeah. That was a guy who fled east Germany through the Baltic sea) with getting through, around, under or above the wall.

john balint The problem people see with Trump's plan is the deportation. Not only can you not deport 11 million people, as that would be insanely difficult, but that type of mass deportation is unethical.
Deportation like that ensures that children with undocumented parents are separated, or children will have to go back despite the fact that they were raised in the US.
Not only that but it would be incredibly damaging to the economy. Undocumented peoples contribute vastly to state and local treasuries, and even contributed $12 billion to the economy. The vast majority pay taxes, state and local bills and more. Not to mention the sectors where undocumented people usually funnel into for work. The agricultural sector, especially, would see a downturn in production (and therefore profit), and you know for a fact that everyday American citizens are fishing all day to find a job picking fruit in the sun all day.
A path to citizenship for those who check-out as productive members of society is a better way to go, economically, ethically, and it's definitely a lot easier than mass deportation.
The point is, you cannot label a people-group definitively the way Trump does, and then propose actions based on those prejudiced views. Mexico is not "sending" their people, and if they were, you know the majority aren't rapists and murderers (we have enough gun-nuts with mental disabilities in our country naturally). He said that he assumes some of the people are good people. Only some? How about the majority of hard working people? Perhaps we, as a country, can come to a more logical conclusion than mass deportation.
