DOMINIC FIKE - SUNBURN / 2023 / COLUMBIA / ALTERNATIVE POP
4/10
Y'all know this is just my opinion, right?
I have a weird relationship with his music where I am very aware of the fact that sometimes it can be sub-par, but there’s something incredibly captivating and enjoyable about his songs. And when he hits with a great song it REALLY hits for me
Samezies
Same!
yea well put
Me too!
We with think fast
TOO LATE ANTHONY, I ALREADY LOVE THIS ALBUM
That isn't allowed
Being a melon fan and loving Dominic Fike albums is so hard
Giving that he gave Babytron and Yeat higher scores that MBDTF, I think it’s safe to stay listening to those Fike albums (they just chill summer songs, I’m not sure what melon expects from them lol)
@tannerthanyou7117 I think there's a lot of really good writing that goes deeper than chill songs, both of Doms albums have been really well-rounded musical experiences imo
@@KendegohLucavi that’s really where melon’s review confuses me. What more can you really ask from Fike at this point? 🤷♂️
@@tannerthanyou7117 Wdym "what more can you ask"? There's better music out there, I can ask for that (if I am to score it higher than 4/10, not because I'm entitled to good music). Chill summer songs can be great, well-written songs, and it's just demeaning to the artists of those songs to reduce it all to "it's just a chill summer song, what do you expect?". When I listen to music I always expect good music, otherwise why would I listen?
This is just the same argument as defending bad TV shows by saying "I just want something to turn my brain off to". Ok? It's still bad even if you set your standards so low you can enjoy it by turning your brain off. Other people don't have to lower their standards to be fair when reviweing it.
And going by my normal standards, and not "chill summer song with no expectations standards", this album isn't that good, so I won't be listening again.
@@Elena-gj6ow First of all, I liked the album. It seems like a lot of others did. It’s up there with a lot of summer albums (to me). So you disliked it, damn that’s crazy. Good for you
Secondly that’s a dumbass take. I never said I had to “lower my standards” to listen to chill summer songs, especially these. I think these are great, I just never mentioned the great writing, beats, production etc.
Fantano is a hater, everyone knows this 😂😂 he has his own likes and dislikes. This is one of those odd dislikes that I don’t get (which was the entire point of this conversation until your dumbass showed up)
I feel like ive watched anthony for so long that I can predict these scores after one listen
right like i said he’s gonna give me a 4 and he did like what
I'm gonna sound so presumptuous but I swear I guessed the score right from the thumbnail (shirt + face)
@@thelastnote1664I swear I can guess the score based on the artists last work and the potential they had on it. Just seeing the name dominic fike in the title made me think 4 😂
That's because the expression he's doing on the thumb.
Ima sound like a dork but I’ve been watching him for so long I can predict his score off of the top of the video description. Without scrolling down to the actual score I mean.
This is a really bad take
Feel like he’s criticizing the album for being what it was trying to be in the first place: a chill summer vibes album.
Literally lol
I usually agree with cranthony faptano, but I couldn’t disagree more. I absolutely love this album and I think it’s one of the easiest listens I’ve had in a while. But I also really enjoy the punk, rock-pop style that he puts in his music. This album felt like a breath of fresh air, and it strangely reminded me of my childhood. Dom’s music just hits for me tho
Also, Think Fast is probably my favorite song of the year
think anyone at all into indie music would be more than happy if you played them a few songs of this album
I think sometimes critics get so extra with being critics that it's never about the feeling it's about the technical aspects of music
Strangely enough it reminds me of my childhood too I'd say my favourite song is SUNBURN the vocals after the chorus have my soul ❤
Ya this album has really grown on me. Absolutely love it.
same! think fast and 4x4 are my favs
Non stop been listening to this whole album since it released
Common L. I can't see how anyone would think this is below average.
I love Dominic Fike, I’ve never understood Melon’s dislike but each to their own.
Same with Isaiah Rashad
He still mad about “Cancel Me” second verse
@@GDSprodifyAnthony’s political beliefs always get in the way of his reviews
@@Serna171 sure, if we ignore many examples to the contrary - maybe, just maybe, his opinion wont align with yours or whoever's sometimes or much of the time.
Definitely wrong on this one melon. Dominic killed it with this album. Sure writing isn’t incredible but a light 4 is crazy low imo
how much is weed is by far the hardest on the album. And I enjoyed 80%of the project which is more than I can say about a lot of artists lately.
Totally agree, I think the biggest problem is that song like Mamas Boy crash down your vibe listening to other songs you know, everytime on of these song go on ur like: „nah, skipping…“. Still dope album
@@monkeman4466 i like both how much is weed and mamas boy, how dare you say things like that
@@monkeman4466it’s strange because I hated mamas boy on first listen but it really grows on you
How Much Is Weed? made me cry the first time I listened to it. Just something about the intensity and stress and trauma. I love Dom.
I agree it’s my favourite song
Lack of personality?? The whole album is personality. It is a unique experience. It's a 7.5 out of ten album. The ability to kind of give each verse its beat and rhythm is nothing but having a great ear for music. Mamas boy is the best interpretation for that. 4/10 Omg this is crazy
bro he saying lack of personality caught me off guard. how so?
You literally can't write a better joke. Sometimes he misses so hard it's comedic🤣
was blown away by the album, far more fleshed out and crafted than his debut, which I also loved. Dom fully delivered for whatever expectations I had
Agree completely. Love fantano but hate this review. Mama's boy is a skip for me after the first few listens but nothing else. Great album from start-to-finish. I love all his stuff but this one hits so hard for me. Reminder that jist bc you like a critic doesnt mean theyre right all the time
Strong 9 for me on this one
Wow
Cap, First album much better than this.
@@vinceperrotta2763Nobody says Anthony is right all the time that is the whole point of these videos is to discuss our differing opinions. Also you are (subjectively 😉) insane for thinking this album is a 9 it is boring from start to finish and there’s not one song that got stuck in my head and it’s a pop album isn’t it supposed to be… melodically pleasing?
3:18 3:19 3:19 3:22
If this album was called "To Sun A Burn" you would’ve given it a 10
When you say Dominic blends through all of these genres very shallowly, effortlessly and whatever.. I like it. His music sounds chill as fuck. It’s fun, it’s catchy, I don’t have to think about it. It’s sooo goood. Just blast it in your car driving down, it’s like donuts for my ears.
fr he can do chill music that you dont have to get deep into and then he can do things like what kinda women and mamas boy
I agree. This new album is the best full album. I've heard in a long time. Probably the best full album start to finish since FOTO dropped in 2020. I mean none of the songs feel skippable and I have played the album. 4-5 times now and it seems to get better each time
If the album was called “To be a pimp for Mona Lisa”, then you would have given it a 14/10
Hur dur
Wow
HAHHAHAHAHHA
I find that Dominic's music are a lot of growers. It takes at least a few listens before you start to enjoy them. I wasn't thrilled with this album at first, but now I have it on repeat.
Yea I loved the last album a bunch and knew I liked it right away. So I was discouraged when this album didn’t sit well with me right away, but after not listening to it for a bit and then picking it back up it’s really grown on me. Glad it did bc I like to like him
yeah i genuinely didnt like the entire album besides how much is weed at first until i actually gave it multiple listens
So good to see representation of the deaf community with this video! ❤
you're referring to fike's fanbase, right?
@@twod0vesyou have no clue
@@twod0vesbro what
No mention of Frisky? Damn
The fact that an artist can seamessly blend different genres and make good songs is honourable in of itself
right 😭😭 why is he complaining about that? ppl complain about people sounding the same and then complain when they sound different
@@margaretw5364he complimented the attempt. Just said it didn't work, bc it didn't
"The fact that an artist can seamlessly blend different genres and make good songs is honorable in of itself" If that were new in ANY way or not more common, then sure, but thats not the world we live in.
@@xBINARYGODx who
@@edyfing5052 fr i want a list of people who can do that
The fact that you think courthouse is his best song just shows how offff you are on this album
Weezer is on the song no air quotes needed! Dominic interpolates and then Rivers has vocals, and on their IG Weezer said that they had a hand in the instrumentation as well. Tf?
I feel like he kinda missed the point of Mama’s Boy, I get not liking the vocal style on it but the song delves into super dark territory abt Dom’s upbringing (dad leaving, mom in and out of jail) and about how he wished he was a doll so he could be the perfectly manufactured kid for them (which is why the vocals are super short and artificial sounding). Like the song is deliberately trying to sound like an “indie pop nightmare” as he described it’s literally a super sad personal song
Very true but his album version is still really tough to listen to. His more "unplugged" version of Mama's Boy he sang at coachella was how I would've liked the song to be and it still would've sent the message.
@@exosen9922 Listened to the Coachella version after reading this and ya I totally agree now lol I like the vocals in that version a lot more, still think it's a solid song overall though!
Wow you explained this WAYYYYY better than I did in my comment omg.
Yes, and the music video depicts this very well🙌🏻
the production and vocal processing on mama's boy is mad unique
yeah easily my favourite. almost sounds like something from gambinos awaken my love. singing style wise at least
@@jackcalow2430ohhh yeah i never thought about that
@jackcalow2430 nah he reminded me of jack stauber
Cause it’s awful
And I love the album
Yep I have it on repeat but probably the only song I like of his unfortunately
Thought this was a pretty huge improvement over his last project. Maybe doesn’t have a ton of stand outs but it’s consistently pretty enjoyable imo
agreed! i thought his last project was cool but a bit forgettable imo
Agree. Like this is the first DF album that I could actually make it through. Not only that but I actually put it on. It’s an easy album to digest.
Finally a serious fantano comment
really liked his last one - i think i wouldve liked this one more if he cut the fat and made it a shorter length album
What Could Go Wrong is much better than this Playlist Album.
Fantano just feels like satire at this point. Sunburn is an awesome and very personal record, and the sounds blend together very cohesively.
Bro this was in your top albums of this year and you said you have no reason to go back 💀
Was just about to say this lmao
where does he say this? interested.

it’s a bunch of old tracks that really doesn’t have any sort of direction. some stand out tracks but honestly a solid 6
@@armysummed it up well
@@army ye there's some really great songs but the lows of the album are VERY low. Adding to that the album just feels all over the place production wise so the most id give it is a 5 or 6.
This album was 8-9 range for me easily, I love it
bodies is genuinely one of the best pop songs out there
Such a vibe fr
I've been listening to this album on repeat. It's so good
Me too!
Frisky is definitely my favorite song on this album. I feel like everytime I latch onto a song and watch his review of the album he never mentions the song I love.
i loooovvveee frisky cus you can listen to it without thinking about it and just jam and then once you listen to the lyrics it gets a little dark but still fun and the fact that he sings the chorus different every time makes it such and interesting song. it has so many layers
I think this is substantially better than his first album tbh
Cap + Cope
Honestly, given his reviews of the singles, I'm surprised that this didn't get a red flannel.
Same lol
Nah I personally completely disagree with this review, this album feels like a massive step up from the last one, I love how much more personal and vulnerable a lot of the lyrics are, as well as the general sound of the whole record.
This album is sooooo good
Damn he didn't even mention the title track I thought that was easily the best on the album
Didn’t mention frisky which got some creative ass vocals on it too lol
ya I hate how he doesn't mention some of the best songs in the album like last time he forgot to talk about wurli
@@j02435wurli is so good
Facts, I think the melody is the catchiest for me from the new album.
Was thinking the same thing
This album is definitely a high 8. It grows on you and your pants. Stands out from a lot of music coming out lately
as a kid whos lived in florida my whole life no one talks about how much the heat warps your memory and everything about your childhood js feels like a fever dream. dom has always had a way of captivating me with that shit he knows how to mix that feeling into his lyrics and the sound. sunburn is the perfect title track
Dark is an awesome song tbh
crazy that he didn’t even mention it, probably my fav song on the album
I liked the album it sounds like Florida and being in Florida while listening to it is such a nice vibe all the cities and beaches next to each other with no separation other then the sand and concrete it’s so nice and I feel like this album really captures how it feels to be in Florida in one album and I really appreciate that
bro i love dominic to death and dancing in the courthouse it's like his worst song. and this guy saying it's his best track was the cherry on the cake for me 😵
i’m so sad he didn’t even mention “sunburn”. that shit is so fire, way better than dancing in the courthouse imo
Fantano is the Tucker Carlson of music
Yeah, you got this one hella wrong Fantano. This album pretty amazing.
damn lol this songs all are so unique , song writing under rated. what would you rather him talkin about i guess
Think fast is literally just a weezer interpolation so def not unique 😭
@@TheTryhardBeast12and?

W Aries and fike fan
It’s really cool because you can like a piece of art that someone else dislikes and both have valid reasons for doing so
@@Adbar10XD hell yeah man:)
You can’t give it a 4
My least favorite music critique on artist is “it’s sounds like someone else would have made the song” like is Mona Lisa sounding like it could be a Calvin Harris song a bad thing? Calvin Harris has multiple hit songs and only produces/mixes the songs. He’s not the vocal performance. So if this was on a Calvin Harris album in Theory would it be good or bad? Like there’s no actual context to why the song is disliked
exactly
He's mad that Dominic is versatile as fuck
Was expecting a red flannel so I see this as an absolute win
Someone that looked like Fike definitely bullied Melon in school. How you say you like a song but “Feels like he means the lyrics this way” when they literally say he not worried about body count.
might be true lol
In hs Fantano had a red mohawk and played bass in a punk band. He knows a poser when he sees one. Apple logo face tat
@@junny3000he got that tat for his younger sister who’s name is apollonia, do ur research 😙

I liked this album
I hate to be that guy but I feel like no one is trying to actually listen to these lyrics like as soon as he (dom) gave context to this album it just solidified the entire vibe. Not to mention the technical work on these instrumentals is so good. Sunburn is earcandy.
i disagree. the context for this album is important but why wouldn’t we pay attention to the lyrics? the whole album gives context to dom even is he isn’t the same person today. tracks like dark and dancing in the courthouse (and more) are songs that have messages worth listening to.
Add this to one of your worst takes compilation.
Good Ol' Fantano bias once again shines through, I give this review a 3 melon
this album is golden, you wrong on this one brother.
Nah dude tweakin on g
Seriously?? Please actually read into his story. Dominic was once so poor he sold his guitar for food. He was so talented he had success despite of all of his life issues. The fact that you didn't even mention any of that is honestly disrespectful and BS. I'm sorry but this review comes off as lazy, you're completely missing the point of why everyone is captivated by this guy.
I met Rivers Cuomo I’m never going to fail
should be too comment
Not saying the baby daddy lyric on bodies was good…but I thought he was being sarcastic/playful with saying that getting a girl pregnant is the way to keep her around
Whenever i think an album is good i know this guy is going to hate it
I'm sorry, 4/10? 4/10?! HELL NO, THIS ALBUM IS AMAZING!!! YOU GAVE THAT BORING YEAT TRASH A 7, AND YOU GAVE THIS BEAUTIFUL FUN INDIE RECORD A 4?! ARE YOU HIGH?! 🤨😡🤦

@@binmanbinman y’all must be high on cocaine
As a weezer fan, think fast was a great introduction to dominic fike for me, it sounded like a classic blue album song with hip hop influenced, which I usually don't like. However, he mixed it so well with the weezer sound that I didn't care. Now that I think about it, I can't tell if I like the song because of Dominic or because of weezer.
Such a fire album didn’t know this homunculous was still making UA-cam videos
I love the progression in his music. He’s definitely growing as an artist. He hasn’t made anything I don’t enjoy but this album did not disappoint imo
If this album was called Sunscreen it would've been a 10.

Wrong but that's ok
Anthony is a robot. There are a lot of great albums that he just doesn’t get.
4x4 is a masterpiece
For me the album is 7/10 , i really love dominic music , it inspires me as an artist. My fav is probably ant pile :))
this is a fun album
Super duper love this album! Love his guitar playing and his vocals have so much personality. And hes also a producer which is wild. Very potent mix of talent.
Sounds very late 90s pop rock. I can’t quite put my finger on it and it’s driving me crazy. I will return
The Eels?? Seems like it but it’s another band… they were on a bunch of soundtracks in the late 90s
The Flys.. no, that’s not it but close
Soul Coughing that’s who it is
fantano is trippin
"For me, Fike's albums are quite intriguing and nostalgic. Sunburn was a solid 7.5/10". This was my first reaction to the album until I actually sat down and HEARD it fully. There are a lot of intricate moments that are heavily integrated with his vocals, lyricism and the use of the guitar. This album is a total 9.2/10. The album is a spectacular display of Dominic's story telling ability as well as artistry. Fontano literally brushed through the album given that he literally gives his own interpretation of the album. Clearly this guy lets his biases get the best of him and for a minute I almost did. To everyone... Go listen to the album. It's definitely made its way into my top 10 of the decade.
i love this album
Ok just because weezer is featured in ONE song doesn't mean this album bad
Damn I love this album but I also really enjoyed the first album as well. Saw him at Coachella I'll be seeing him again on his tour.
Probably one of the worst Fantano reviews I’ve seen. Was never a big dim fan until this album came out and instantly fell in love. The melding of genres and nuances and his ability to shift different sounds with such ease is amazing and entirely unique. Honestly couldn’t disagree with you more here Anthony.
7 hours is so good . definitely my favorite from this project
how do u consistently manage to miss the point of the art you're reviewing
I got my first sunburn of the summer this week to celebrate the album and I didnt even know it
Just because Tom Cruise paid out of pocket to blow up an Austrian bridge in the new Mission Impossible movie, doesn't mean you had to say that Dominic Fike looks like the kid from fairly odd parents came to life and got addicted to crack.
I def don’t know what you’re talking about buddy. This album was fucking AMAZING.
Although I completely disagree with your opinion, I think this was a super respectful video while still getting your points across. Salute, king 🫡
anthony fantano i dont like how many comparisons you always seem to make in all of your reviews. they take away from the actual review of the individual artist and when you compare them, sure it could be that the artist got inspired from them, or not. we don't really know most of the time, but you seem to throw around comparisons like candy on halloween. anyways i don't see the point in all of the random comparisons and would rather you focus on the artist at hand. thanks.
Woulda given it a 10 if it was : Dominic Lamar - to pimp a sunburn
i feel like melon just misunderstands fikes music as a whole. i really enjoyed the album, and weirdly enough, dancing in the courthouse was probably one of my least song
When r u going to drop a song? I want to hear your music. I know you’ve made some lol
I have listened to one song ever by this guy, and it was a Kenny produced song. It was fun
Higher than I expected!
Even if I do end up completely disagreeing with the review the thumbnail is goated
You keep giving Kevin reasons to keep you out of BROCKHAMPTON, Anthony

Complete hater. This album is unique creative versatile deep dark and also light and fun. This review is waaaaayyy off
See what I like about his music is that it doesn’t matter how big he gets he still keeps things authentic and not overproduced. That’s what I like about him
I LIKED MAMA'S BOY. IT SOUNDS UNIQUE COMPARED TO THE REST OF THE ALBUM

@aqua47flawless43 nah I don't hear it at all tbh
@@darkbustergt8085 well it doesn't sound the same but the topic is similar and has the same type of eery tone.
For an explanation for anyone who wants it. I feel the song has an odd and dramatic tone in doms voice. It fits for the story of the boy wanting to be a toy as he feels abandoned by his parents. It's a weird song with a creepy vibe. Its not much like anything else on the album except for maybe the ending when the kid sings the m-a-m-a part. That part sounfs poppish but I feel like the "going insane" part might be the vibe dom was trying to give off. I feel that the song may have missed the mark on doing it like super well? Dom isn't bcnr. He can't sing in that kind of dramatic tone but I think he did well. For context, I rated this song about a 7. One of the highest on the album for me. With that said its not my favorite and I gave the album a 54/100. Just thought id put that out there. It isn't crazy good but I feel like it isnt getting the rep it may deserve.
