The Yugoslav M56 Submachine Gun: Perhaps Too Simple?

Поділитися
Вставка
  • Опубліковано 23 сер 2024
  • The M-56 is a Yugoslav take on the MP-40 design, produced starting in 1956 to replace its previously issued M49 submachine gun (which was a copy of the Soviet PPSh-41). The M56 is simpler than the MP40, however, and chambered for the 7.62x25mm Tokarev cartridge. It is a simple gun to make, but quite awkward to use, and has a remarkable potential to disassemble itself while firing if not assembled correctly.

And never, I repeat, never heard of that accidental disassembly thing. So, it's all in proper training. Also, that safety is probably the most safest one ever made.

That's not entirely true, we had stockpiles of weapons and ammo after WW2. There was always more small arms than army needed. It was produced out of simple reason, our commie government wanted to "open up factories and workplaces for people" so they invested in crap like small arms factories, artillery factories, car factories... Everything was shit but it was sold to eastern "friends" who were even more behind

Despite the external semblance to MP-40 it actually owed more design solutions to Beretta Model 38 (as previous M49 and M51 did too) and PPSh-41 (trigger group). Only real MP-40 features were folding stock and pistol grip shape.
It was appreciated for greater accuracy, obtained by a relatively low rate of fire due to the rate reducing buffer and shorter bolt travel than competing sub-machine guns. Clumsy as it is, it still rated better in trials than Sten, M40, Thomson and PPSh.

A little bit of history on that gun, which in truth served Yugoslav army supriseingly good despite it's... let me be kind to the piece of my history and call it simple. It was one of the ways to suck-up to the Soviets, because at that point it was obvious that we will not be part of eastern block and that we were ready to fight Soviets as hard as we fought Germans if they tried to force us. Stalin actually wanted to use the force, but Russian soldiers, including many generals, who knew that there were less German soldiers on the Eastern front because of our continuous guerilla war against Germans, were unwilling, to put it mildly, to do it. So, our president at the time decided to adopt weapons compatible with Red Army standards as a gesture of assurance to USSR that we would be on their side in the case of future conflicts. This came with the added benefit of getting Soviet armor, T-34-85, and T-55 tanks later on. So, since we confiscated a lot of German WWII tooling we proceeded to produce USSR compatible guns on it, and one of the products have been this gun, M56. One of the weapons we were not ready to adopt have been Mosin rifle, 7.62X54R is still looked down upon today, so we continued the production of our Mouser, M48 rifle.
There is one piece of that M56 that you are missing, that was, and still is, highly regarded, "bayonet"-knife that came with it. It's a nearly perfect battle knife, thin enough to be used as a knife yet stiff enough to be used as a dagger, springy enough not to break and hard enough to have good edge retention, not too long and not too short, in one word almost perfect. Of course it had to have some drawback, and that is the material, it wasn't stainless, it was made out of high carbon steel that was extremely prone to rusting, despite bluing, and needed a bit of maintenance. So, it's not a knife for average soldier but it is worn and used, even today, by professionals who are ready to put a little bit more effort into maintenance of their equipment in order to gain better performance out of it. encrypted-tbn0.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcRwY02kzJ33Tvb3nhaNJkB6UiSpQTVni3inux7eXdvMQGKqGUdH

Another great firearm term learned through this video. When being taught about squib rounds in the military an instructor put it best that if you should chamber and fire another round behind one that will lead to a "rapid disassembly of parts." Ian's "spontaneous disassembly" line is another great one.

It was chambered for the deadly fast 7.62×25mm Tokarev cartridge, whose greater muzzle velocity provided significantly more penetration at ranges of 200 meters than the standard 9 mm or .45 ACP pistol rounds used by other submachine guns. It'll literally go through anything. Just check out the sizzling performance of the standard Yugo pistols, the Zastava M57, when compared to pistols using larger caliber rounds. You can find them here on UA-cam.

    • @Bialy_1
      @Bialy_1 6 років тому

"deadly fast 7.62×25mm"+"more penetration at ranges of 200 meters "=false, smaller=more resistance from air for every gram of projectile(+ two times as fast =4 times more ressistance from air with the same projectile)=most likely at 200m 9mm will be superior and somewhere betwen 100-150m they will gonna have similar penetration but 9mm will be able to do more damage to the target.

True, but rarely M56. Not because they didn't want to but because in 1990's it was hard to come by. It was phased out, it was only a Yugoslav weapon (unlike Thompson and MP40 and other that were brought from abroad) so there were hardly any left in the military stockpile.

Ian, if You are commenting on gun, bare in mind when and how it got constructed/produced.
FYI, Yugoslavia susteined horrible losses in WW2, both in manpower and industrial capacity, which was mediokre before the war itself. Also note that after end of WW2, skilled labour was nowhere to be found, not to mention engineers and designers, yet the state of Yugoslavia was able to start manufacturing their own small arms (at the same time it started production of its own field howitzers and other hardware), not to be dependent of any sort of foreign production, altho during early 50's it received abundant US military aid.
So, instead of doing basic rant on design flaws, do a bit more research, and put some more things into perspective when doing Your next video on any similar subject... ;)
P.S : I love Your channel and Your work, keep up the GREAT work You are doing !
Greetings from Belgrade, former capital of former Yugoslavia... ;)

Yugoslavia did, what no other country "in the east" at least done - freed themselves from Hitler without the "help" of Stalin. Czech almost did it (Patton freed Plzen, they even have - or at least had monument to thank Americans - which also annoyed Stalin), and we (Poland) tried it, but no-one was either able to bring us supplies, or didn't want to (Stalin again). So while you've had some help from Allies, and then went Communist (Allies did drop lots of supplies, you annoyed Stalin, and kept annoying USSR - which loved to see itself as the only force that stopped Hitler), but at least you didn't went Stalinist. That's why Yugoslavia wasn't considered an ally to USSR. Perhaps friendly (sometimes), but never an ally. But all those countries wanted independence, and after the only thing that kept them together (Tito) died, it all went downhill.

@@NikolaRakicDjesPoslaMala Yes I know. Tito was in position that he could (and almost did) say that he won the war by himself - half true, but compared to Poland, he did have a point. I wish it was the same for my country. Also Czech fell in 1948 and Austria "almost miraculously" was left by Soviets. I don't have a love for them. First they attack my country as allies of Hitler, and when they are attacked we get sold out by allies, and end up in 44 years of varying occupation. We had one or two breaks, which Polish nationalist don't like to mention (go figure), We were allowed to be communist and Warsaw pact was named after our Capital City, but we had enough power, that soviets caved in when our "leaders" said that Poland will not have "Soviet Union style of government". Also in 1970 without their knowledge and approval we signed binding treaty with West Germany, that they would not dispute our border on Odra (Oder) river. They were angry, but it comes with certain privileges to be the largest country in Eastern block (Yugoslavia doesn't count in this case, just as China doesn't). They weren't sure how the Military action in our country go. If the government decided not to fight, people would have them killed in the streets, before they could flee to Russia. And there would be significant resistance to full scale occupation.

Roy Kliffen The perception is to scare the useful idiots into thinking the government will protect them even though they aren't legally required to do so and Hollywood movies showing machine guns shooting infinite bullets with near laser-like accuracy scares them as well.
However the real reason is government doesn't want properly armed citizens to oppose them while on the flip side of the same coin has the effect of protectionism for the domestic gun industry who couldn't compete with the prices these and others would be going for if they were allowed to be imported unmolested.

In my opinion, if they wanted to ban the ownership/sale of machine-guns, they should've banned ALL sales of these machine guns. Whether one agrees with such a ban, or not, the law should have been consistent.

    • @wingracer1614

The purpose of the law was basically to end machine gun ownership but there is a problem with that. How would law enforcement agencies get machine guns if no one could buy or sell them? The whole dealer exemption is just to allow certain dealers to buy samples for law enforcement agencies to try out and possibly purchase.

You need to pay a bit more attention, neither of those firearms will _accidentally disassemble while firing_ like this one will. A pin out of an AR will be noticed immediately if the upper and lower swing open from slight movement. A dust cover on an AK is within the field of view of the user _and_ within inches of their eye.
This? The end cap slightly out of position is quite easy to overlook.

What I found the interesting thing about this M56 gun was the Yugoslav decision to make a steel cored +P+ round for it. They soon experienced detonations in various pistols which also used Tokarev size ammo and obsolted the round and warehoused it. In the 1980s when China released their C96 pistols some future capitalist in Yugoslavia also released the ammo as Tokarev ammo. Many Mauser C96 pistols were thus destroyed by folks who thought they had just purchased Warsaw Pact surplus ammunition. Tokarev ammunition and C96 pistols became a bad name in combination as an almost direct result. The ammunition in question has a distinctive headstamp with a 6 pointed star, a dash and an Eros symbol (male with an arrow) and either a 52 or a 53 date stamp. I would upload a picture of my specimens of it (shipped to me for use in a C96 by someone who should have known better, LoL), but of course YT doesn't allow that.
