  • We’re taking our 18 acres of raw land and building our home and homestead from start to finish! Our goal is to become more self sufficient, sustainable and natural as possible.
    We’re building our dream, space efficient, home and creating our own permaculture food forest and making ancient Chinampa gardens!
    Follow along our journey as we work on this start to finish, on a budget, doing as much as we possibly can!
    This week I finished clearing the remainder of our acre and had a bit of a log debarker debacle!
    Here’s my Amazon Affiliate link! I always recommend local first, but sometimes we just need something from Amazon! ❤️

    Pile all your brush exactly the same(butt ends together), rent a chipper, or start burning small piles as you go. Will keep bugs away when summer comes, so don’t burn all in spring. PS, if you put underground utilities, you get to keep tranquility of more trees, maintaining privacy and less tree work. And power lines are UGLY. Remember, you’re only doing this once! If my wife and I were your parents, we would be sooooo impressed and proud of you both, doing all this while building your family. Remember to take time for each other….a long haul, it’s not about the destination, cause your already there! So enjoy the journey! You are truly blessed.

      This was such a kind and beautiful message to read. Thank you so much ❤️. I’m still so back and forth on what to do. Is it odd that I’m nervous to use a wood chipper haha? I know for sure we’ll be using a lot of the brush by the wetlands for our “Chinampa” wetland gardens! And thank you for the lovely advice to take time for each other. Just Subscribed. Im 70 and been using a chainsaw since 1964 when my father bought a new xl12 homelite. Clearing like you are by hand is better for the soil than bulldozing or any other heavy equiptment. Get a barrel tub or something you can place around a stump. We use a large rear tractor rim. and build a fire and after you get a good bed of coals cover it with anything metal. we use a car hood. And the stump will burn away below ground level. We a couple years ago boyght a additional 4 acres. and own tractors a backhoe and bulldozers. However we are clearing that land by hand. We dont want to lose what little topsoil and organic matter there is.

    • @SimpleLivingwithBiata
      @SimpleLivingwithBiata  2 роки тому +1

      Thank you so much for the suggestion! I appreciate it! I think we’re going to keep all of the stumps and let them erode in the permaculture food forest part of the homestead! In the build site, we’ll excavate the stumps likely but pile all of the top soil for the gardens where the house will be 🥰. That’s super cool how you remove stumps though! Wow!

    When you put it on full choke for a cold start, the first time it burps, burbles, or halfway tries to start, switch it to half choke a.k.a. fast idle. Then it should start in another pull or two after that. If you have it on full choke and you have pulled more than 6 times without a burp or burble, switch it to half choke for a few pulls to prevent flooding. If it doesn't start after 6 pulls on half choke you can switch it back to full choke - or go sit down for a couple minutes before trying again - which will let some of the fuel in the motor evaporate, besides giving you a little time to recover.

    Hello Biata. I thought I was the only female sawing wood. So awesome to see! (and from Canada at that ;) ) Glad I found you!
    I was lucky enough to get a new chainsaw this year for my birthday from my dad. He tried my old chainsaw and said, "this thing has no power". lol. So after sawing and getting used to my new stihl, I will tell you a few tricks; As you know off is all the way up, and it sits at on position most of the time, then there is half and full choke. (Depending on models there is also a compression release button on top you can press down.) On cold days, pull in the throttle and set to full choke, pull until it the motor kind of wants to start but didn't, then squeeze the throttle again, (this will release the choke), now it should start on first or second pull - try it - it works!
    We are just starting up too. I am on the fence right now to sell our house and move into a trailer or not. However I am starting to clear our land. Perhaps someday we can visit each other, cut trees, garden, do mom things, etc. (If you ever feel like visiting the Atlantic). I will subscribe. Good luck on this channel!

    Absolutely fearless you are. Fun dropping the trees. But 95% of the work is the clean up for sure. SAWS 101: Cold start, full choke(all the way down), then pull til it fully “burps”, stop, one click up to “high idle”, the pull til start. If no start repeat “cold start”. Don’t pull past “burp”, it floods the saw! Warm start within 15 mins, high idle, pull up to 5 times, if no start, or, runs a little and stops, treat as cold start. #1 problem, flooding. So it’s better when picking up a saw, when in doubt, pull it a few times to make sure there’s no gas sitting in carb. Cause if there is, and you choke it, it will flood. So if it doesn’t start after the cold start routine, and it’s been running recently, good chance it’s now flooded. No need to wait or remove spark plug, switch to “high idle” pull it til she starts. If he/she smokes a lot, you know she was flooded. Your saws are newer. Older saws, can be a pain and be problematic at times.

      Thank you so much! I appreciate you explaining this! I’ve been doing this technique on my 180c but I find the cord on the 291 SO hard to pull haha. I couldn’t even hear it burp because the sound of the pulling the cord was so loud and jerky lol. So I’ve been taking my helmet and ear protection off because then I can hear all the little sounds! I’m getting better with this one! Thanks so much for explaining this all! There’s a few tips in here I wasn’t aware of!

      @deksta21 4 місяці тому

      @@SimpleLivingwithBiata I'll add to this that I have the same saw and its is a mission to start but i found that starting it like its flooded starts it a lot quicker also no need to choke. You just got to figure how to hold the throttle and pull the cord at the same time. I normally kneel on the body of the saw throttle left and pull right. Its a little awkward at first but it works much better than the regular start procedure. youve probs figured this out already though lol

    Don't let go of throttle when sawing thicker trees, not gasing it is what gets the chainsaw stuck. So if its in a tree don't let go.

    Keep the brake off when starting the saw. It will start so much easier just do not rev it until ready to use or put the brake back on again once started also mix the oil with the petrol before putting in the tank as this gives a better mix with a good oll shake before fuelling.

    Remember to help maintain your soil and protect your valuable land and water resources by chipping your brush and spreading it. Truly saves your soil ecology...saves you $ also (eco )resources, and cleanup time. Those wood chips and roughage will break down and give you absolutely beautiful rich soil for your gardening. You are doing absolutely fabulous work and supermom material!. congrats on a beautiful place to call home. Many Blessings!

      Thank you so much for the suggestions! I appreciate it as I’m trying to do this in the best way possible to protect our wetlands and utilize the amazing biosphere and avoid soil erosion as much as possible! We’re going to try to use the brush instead of just burning it. Not as conventional, and more work, but I think it will be worth it! Ps. We kept all the amazing topsoil from the 300ft driveway and it’s incredible!

    Your chainsaw supplier should know what should work re the new saw they sold you! You are learning about using your chainsaw and should be able to rely on the advice you are getting. It might be better to use another supplier who knows what they are talking about! You should ask for help from those who comment on your UA-cam site, if you need more information. You are trying and that is commendable and will take you a long way, but do not be afraid to ask and weigh up the advice you get. Good luck and don’t be afraid to ask, all of us who did have profited by doing so! Keep safe.😮

    Bonne continuation et bon WE. Amitiés. Christophe.

    A much easier way to start a chainsaw is throw it in the bottom position (full choke) then left hand on the handle standing up crank it using the weight of the saw (drop method) when it trys to start go up to the normal setting (top) and repeat step 1, just make sure the chain break is on so it doesn't spin and good job 👍

    Good video. You are adept with the chainsaw. Your daughter will always be wondering how Mom does that much work while at school. I am looking forward to finding out if the water is flowing across your property or if it is only low-level from beaver brigading. I hope you guys have a strong current to develop while you build your future. The basic necessities seem to be from the get go - the only ones who can do it are yourselves!

    A lot of times a saw will have a hard time pulling fuel from the tank to the carburetor. So you have to pull it 1000 times.
    Timberline chainsaw sharpener, if you don't have one, get one. Saw will cut fantastic.
