@TheUnknownVideographer but if you don't ever need 20 mins straight, then it wouldn't matter. And the benefits of having a smaller camera would be a better choice. If you do need over 20 mins of constant recording time regularly, then there is the s5ii, or any other camera in that category. Making one of the world's smallest full frame cameras definitely isn't going backwards 20 years. It's just being innovative in a different area.
Wonderful to see a UA-camr embrace a new camera, instead of just writing it off (like almost every other UA-camr) just because it doesn't fit into their narrative of a modern camera.
@@TheUnknownVideographer gopro is a video camera. This is more like a film camera. 1000 feet of vision 35mm at 24fps on Panavision gets you 11 minutes and you have to switchover. All this in a tiny camera and you can use Anamorphic lenses on it seems like progress to me.
Good idea but I agree: This should have been M43. With full-frame lenses, this will have the same problem that the Nikon Zf may have. It will just feel too front heavy without a real grip. Other than that, good that Panasonic does something new 👍
@@achrafmel I'd kill for a GX10 with a full articulating screen and mic jack. Honestly that was the only reason I got rid of my GX85. New screen, new autofocus, and a mic jack would make it the best content camera for crop sensors
With complete inexintence of small lenses in the range, its a pointless camera. On the other hand, small, slow lenses defeat the purpose of going to FF for the higher performance. To have launched it with a manual focus, f8 fixed lens, alongside with a body that finally has pdaf, is comical. Panasonic engineers are losing their minds...
@@titomiguelmarques5512 engineers do what they are told to do. Don’t blame them for that. They did the best what company higher ups wanted. But yeah, it is a good idea but flawed.
I agree that this should have been M43. With Real Time Lut and and the size it could have made me a convert. My thing is, for me no VF and a flip screen is a dealbreaker. So close though. Happy to see them going back to compact cameras.
@@superstringsbro The X-T50 is great. I had a chance to give it a try in person at a Fuji event last week. I like the LUT idea of Panasonic and the fact that being FF and all that but the X-T50 is pretty good. It's actually a hair smaller than the OM-5 even.
@@superstringsbro I have the fuji xt30ii currently and do really enjoy it. Just would rather have the rangefinder style body, and it looks like it'll be a year+ before we get the xpro4/xe5. Would love to have one set of compact lenses to use with various bodies styles like m43 can provide.
@@superstringsbro As a Fuji shooter too, the XT50 is a flawed body too. The XS20 is a better camera on so many levels. I agree with Cory. I am not a content provider and this body is clearly not for me. Give me an EVF and an audio jack and I’d be in. Maybe I’ll get the next iteration. The SP will be at $1200 around Christmas. Every time I look for an appropriate upgrade to my EDC/travel setup, it makes me realize just how good (despite their few compromises) my two GX-8s and GX-9 are. While I love the quality I get out of my FF S1R, when I need to move fast and light, my M43 GX series cameras are still unbeatable. I still maintain that the GX-8 was Panasonic’s crowning achievement. I wish they had continued to refine and upgrade that design.
Sometimes I think about all the Lumix glory in GX8: - weather sealing - oled EVF - touch screen - good enough grip - ibis - 4k oh god, 9 years from now, forgotten perfect tech world until effective marketing managers crippled everything
how is the video stabilization for the GX8/9? i found both of these used for quite cheap and i'm thinking of buying either one as a hybrid shooter to get away from my iPhone.
@@sauzefilms I don't have video skills and expertise here to make right advise. So its just a mindflow and tiny experience: GX9 shots 4k only with 1.25 crop. Next stab is good enough for stills and handheld static video shots, but if you wish to walk and record - you will need gimble. Also GX9 lost mice, while GX8 had it. My guess is if main iphone camera angle fits your needs - use it. I guess m43 sensor with crop for 4k not that far away from main iphone camera sensor size, but last one has all the computational magic and can do slow-mo.
I love the approach taken by Panasonic by (finally) updating their app and allowing the sharing of the LUTs. I really hope they make a M43 version and that OM System take note and go all in, too (I'm a massive fan of the E-P7 and its colour/monochrome profiles. But they're only limited to 8 slots (4 colour, and 4 monochrome), and not easily sharable. I love not having to spend the time editing my photos in post. I'm a dad and just don't have the time to spend on it. In camera profiles/LUT are a boon.
Look, I'm glad that Panasonic has decided to go small for fullframe too, but I'll still hold out for a GX9ii. A tiny PDAF m43 camera, with the added bonus of the generous video features on Lumix cameras, it probably would be /the/ perfect jack-of-all-trades camera to carry everywhere "just in case".
Great video Emily (and fab photos too!). I agree I'd have liked an M43 body, like an updated GM series. But I think availability of sensors might be an issue, and it could end up being more expensive then we'd like. But regardless of the sensor price, the lenses are key, and I agree, we have lots of nice small M43 lenses just crying out for a new small body to pop them on! Good luck with the LUTs!
@@MicroFourNerds Will it be getting some coverage on the channel? It was definitely a bit of a one off. I had one for a while, and it was very impressive for the size. 80% of the GX7 but in a tiny box! I still use my GX7 whenever I take a camera cycling…
Love that I've a bit late in the day found your channel - a breath of fresh air blown into what was becoming my stagnant photography using heavy expensive gear, resulting me me becoming disillusioned and un-mojified. Thank you x
This channel is second to none - giving me FACTS and hints about the camera she presents. Who thinks about the issue that colors can capture the attention of thieves when on location. When have you attended class" last time with a smile on your face all the time? She is just adorable.
LOVED your coverage on this! I AGREE! They took your wish list to heart and there’s been such a desire to see something like this since GM1 and GX85. This is a really cool release! Well done Em!
S9 preordered! Despite lots of online hate for the specs, I saw the joy it brought you (and many others) and so I took a chance! As an M43 user, I'm looking forward to adding some full-frame loveliness (and real-time LUTs) to my shots. 😎
The only video I've watched on this camera (I know I'm late lol) and probably the only one I will. Great overview and points! And I agree, m4/3 would've made more sense to me! but I understand the marketing appeal of full-frame. I guess it is cool to throw this in their lineup for the mount. But m4/3 would be sweet :)
Still my favourite camera-related channel -- explaining everything in a clear way (at least to the way my brain is wired!). [George Holden is my second, because he's got the cutest accent and everything (not crushing on him at all, but I actually looped that collab video so many times]. Anyway, also wishing this was a M43 system, seeing that I just got myself into that system when I bought my first camera (second hand GX1, again thanks to this channel) and started using my dad's old lenses. Part of me is hoping Panasonic is like "here's a prequel..." in a way to get people familiar and hooked with LUTs, and purposefully keeping a few "flaws" in a still marketable camera, then in the future releasing a larger full frame with EVF/weather sealing/hot shoe, etc.; and also a M43 in a similar size to this but also with the missing features. Think how great a way it would be to highlight how M43 can get everything into a smaller package and reboot enthusiasm into that system!
This just makes me think, they really aim to make a comeback in the future, with an eventual S9II with weather sealed body and an EVF. I'm gonna wait for a MFT compact camera now. A GX10 would be a banger if they don't cripple it too much like this tiny S5II, and make a tiny G9II without making it too limited as this one. That would be a banger.
Seems good for beginners or folks not serious photographers which is likely most of us. If you wanted something above that the S5Ii awaits as you noted . Like you I Can’t say I would call it small if you add most FF lenses. Like many wish it was a mft, however still tempting and it may grow on many. Glad you got to join all the Panasonic folks in Japan! From what I’ve seen from their other reviewers and you the video and photos taken on S9 look great!
Most of us when it's $1800? If you say so. But to be constructive here, OM System would be truly foolish not to revive the PEN line-up and sell them for half the price of this at most.
This is the best review of all of the reviews. I think the fun factor is what Lumix was going for. Everyone else is all pissed off about it, but this is great for most people. Way better than an iPhone. Nice job!
Hey there! Apologies for the random question but I watched a review of yours where you mentioned a certain camera brand has an on-board cinema filter/cinematic mode, and you mentioned it being exclusive to that brand. Was it the Panasonic Lumix? I cannot remember which video it was! Thank you!
Nice review, Emily, thanks. No EVF makes it very doubtful I'd get this, but if they brought out a m43 version with an EVF, similar to a GX8/9, then that would be perfect.
I’ve seen on several UA-cam channels the desire for an updatedGX8/9. I share that emotion. It seems Panasonic is more focused on their full frame lineup. Mask On Nurse Marty (Ret)
My first Lumix was an orange DMC-TZ1 and boy I liked this camera. It's the camera I shot the most in my life, even tho I have DSLRs. This S9 looks like a descendant of this camera but WAY better. I think I should give it a go !! 👍
Hey Emily! I know I'm late to this but I wanted to thank you for your review. At least in Australia, as of Boxing Day 2024, this camera is a more compelling offer than what would be, for me, a second S5 II... For starters, it's $800 AU cheaper, and comes with a free pancake lens, as well as the 20-60mm (on my particular offer). So it has about $1100-1400 AU "street value" more. The 20-60 I already have but it really is an underrated lens. 20 is CRAZY WIDE for a kit lens. But the other thing for me is it offers something that can take all my FF L mount lenses without being quite as big. I've always said that there is no significant different between something like this and an S5 II once you add a lens and that's true... but there is still a small difference, especially with something like the Sigma C line of primes. Might as well have the smaller option there for things like the window seat of the plane (I know that's a niche one but sometimes amazing shots come from the windows of planes). And the reason I wouldn't choose, say a G9 II, is that on a big trip, which for me, is ANYWHERE because I'm in Australia, I then have to take a separate system. I went to Sweden earlier in 2024 and for a second camera I was stuck between option A) my G9 mk1 which offered smaller lenses but a different SET of lenses... or my S1 which is obviously a beast but did only need the same lenses I had already. I went with the S1 but I felt it was a bad choice and ended up leaving it at my "base" in the middle of Sweden while I went touring the other parts... and so I didn't actually have my 2nd camera. With the S9, which is now the cheaper option than any other (except ones without phase detect AF), I can now easily carry a 2nd camera on my body while my S5 II is in my bag. The colours are also dope... although with that deal, I was limited to the silver which is fine. I find that people in Sweden would actually take an interest in your camera, and the more interesting it looked, the more likely they were to do that, which was nice (especially since I was there to speak Swedish). Anyway, cheers, Lamont.
You can alter the raw file however you like in editing when shooting with real time lut, but for ease inside the Lumix Lab, the preview shows in the colours you shot in, then you can change it to anything else like a standard LUT file 😊
@@MicroFourNerds good call! I kinda want a minimalist rig! Are there small lenses that AF and fit Ina. Fanny alongside? And internal audio rival pocket? ❤️
Enjoyed your video, my favorite on this new camera thus far. It's so close but falls short for me. Agree with you on wishing it was M4/3rd so to make it small interchangeable lens camera/lens combo. Do wish it was weathersealed. Your images are wonderful too.
I don't think it's highlighted enough becaise of your niche in MFT and lumix/oly... but you're an incredible photographer! I'm always inspired and impressed by your pics, sometimes using the same exact gear I use. Thanks for the vid
Ooo good question! It hasn't been mentioned, and just going through the menu now there isn't any ssd option like there is on the s5ii, so at the moment no unfortunately. I hope that comes with an update though
I came from your earlier video where you were talking about how I don't need new camera if the ones I've got are good enough. Now you're making me want the S9... 🤣
Regarding the missing AF/MF switch I set my S9 to AF+MF On. This allows me to be in AF mode but when I move the focus ring on the lens the camera automatically switches to MF. When using this feature if you have focus peaking turned on it will pop up.
Brilliant video, Emily. I recently got the G9 MK2 and the GX9, so hard pushed to justify a third camera. However, I am wanting to learn more about LUTs and this might be my placed to start. Thanks again for fun and informative content x
As always, you did a great job on this review, Emily I've seen other S9 reviews, and one feature they mentioned was the variable zoom that automatically, and smoothly, crops down, in order to get longer zoom. It's an improvement on the S5 II version that you have to manually select prior to starting recording. Did you use it, and what did you think of it?
I decided to go with the S5 II because it made more sense for my needs, but the form factor of this looks great. S9 II with optional EVF, hot shoe and mechanical shutter would be an instant buy. The lack of EVF is sadly a deal breaker for me because I live in Spain, so that's a lot of f/16 weather and any screen becomes utterly useless. Let me wholeheartedly agree with the last minute of this video: Real Time LUT is so good! I'm still tweaking my presets to match gamma, but the only slider I need is Exposure and Highlights on the jpegs! I literally needed the Raw files once in 14 days of shooting daily and that's only because the gamma is still all wrong in my LUT which throws off the light meter. PS: I just watched your entire tiny camera / everyday carry playlist and it was wonderful. I love your content!
This looks like a VERY compelling camera for, probably, most people out there just interested a good solid, fun camera (myself included, especially for days off from shooting for my job). I am in the Sony (and limited, Fuji) system and I do hope that at some point Sony get something like an a7cs. I'm not convinced of the ZV bodies. Thanks for this very informative and fun video! -Dave
It great to see your hard work paying off in that you're one of the first reviewers. What's the ergonomics like without the 3rd party grip? Where would you consider this fits on the entry level, enthusiast or pro level scale of cameras?
Without the grip, it's a little slippier but the thumb grip on the back is well placed. I occasially found my palm leaning into the dial wheel at the back when I used heavier lenses, but for the 1.8 primes for example it's very will balanced without a grip
I think this is firmly an enthusiast camera, but can see it for all three. A beginner would have an easy to use powerhouse, and a pro would be able to male magic with it due to the detail in the raw files, and the excellent video features. But mostly for the enthusiast who wants a smaller, feature rich camera to take out with them day to day!
Great video Emily. I just received my S9 in Green. That Brightin Star 28mm you have mounted on the S9, is an M mount to L mount adapter required or does it come in an L mount configuration. Keep up the great content.
Thanks! Yes it's an M mount, but the adapter rings are super low profile and barely noticeable. It is a great lens, but just be warned, while it is tiny it is solid brass so a little bit heavier than you might expect 😂
I so badly wanted to love this, its stylish, easy to use, great for your socials and I'm already invested in to the L mount sytem so it seemed to make great sense. The lack of weather sealing and no evf...just lets it down for me. So close to everything I hope for in a camera. Full frame range finder, weather sealed, ease of use with a slant toward socials. 🤞🤞 One day maybe.
Regarding the absence of an AF switch and a drive mode is actually beneficial. It means that you can store both of these in your custom settings, something you can't do on camera where there is a physical switch or a dial. So to quickly switch to MF, you could simply store that in a custom mode and you're good to go!
Great review!. Totally agree with you, I am after a MFT, small, compact with IBIS as I have a lot of mft lenses. I dodged buying the S5 as I have legacy canon and brought the R6ii - BUT it's not a fun camera (it's too heavy) to take round, great for shots but not for my everyday on the run use, viz grand kids, general travel and outings. I take the Oly 5 miii out and use that as my throw in the bag go anywhere cam, but I want a panny, as you said that's like the GM1 or my GX850 that has IBIS, LUT's and up to date specs.
Just started watching, but for stills: how to deal with moving onjects when no mechanical shutter and a slow readout sensor? The banding can sort of be dealt with but movement is probably more difficult
I don't think this camera is ever going to be anyone's first choice for like birds in flight or anything, but for day to day stuff... cars, people, whatever, it's absolutely fine. I mean it's the same sensor as the s5ii and people shoot action and sports with that camera all the time using electronic only burst modes. Basically, unless you're whizzing the camera around trying to intentionally showcase rolling shutter, you won't often see it. in the real world it hasn't been an issue.
@@MicroFourNerds thanks! just for family shots, but that means often close by and quickly moving subjects. I had bad experiences with Fuji ES, but that was without IBIS. Thanks for the idea on S5ii, I can try out my Lumix S1 in ES mode for a while to see if I can make it work! Now that l-mount has some gray zone policy for third party lenses, we might get fun cheap pancakes from the viltrox/ttartisan/7artisans etc brands to go along with the S9.
I was initially excited for this camera announcement but then I saw there wasn’t an EVF… the lack of weather sealing made my mind up. The concept of a full frame compact camera is great but not if it doesn’t have an EVF or weather sealing.

Let me say the S9 looks great, for a casual photographer and light video user it seems perfect. The lack of weather sealing means I, personally, would just stick to my og S5 (that I bought nee when it came out) which is still capable and dirt cheap even new. So to sum up - I would definitely buy the S9: - if I didn’t have the S5 - if I didn’t have the ZV-E1 which is similar, but much, much more video oriented - if I didn’t have three GX80/GX85 which are in my opinion peak m4/3 FUN and also heavy inspiration for the S9, with a ton of fun, small, even professional lens options AND a viewfinder. And I hope people would not take this the wrong way and the GX80 used prices won’t skyrocket as they did with the GM series
Excellent review Emily! I'm super curious on how I can fit the S9 into my current Lumix workflow for personal and even some client use cases. Much love from Tennessee!
Love your enthusiasm for small, fun, every day cameras and have watched a lot of your series on Micro 4/3. I've bought and sold that system several times over, always missing its size and fun factor when I've not owned one. Tool the plunge on a Pen-F last year and a Fuji X-E4 this year in that spirit of having great little cameras with bags of creativity built right in. I have a young son now and don't have the time or inclination to sit editing tons of raw photos. I love how fast you can just share these to friends and family on their phone apps, and how easy these cameras are to throw in a nappy bag!! Yeap.. my everyday carry looks different than it did a few years ago! Keep up the great work and keep enjoying the tools that bring a smile! Half the fun is finding what jives with us creatively isn't it!
Glad you are satisfied with your choice of the PenF and XE4. The Pan F is a cult camera and there is a premium for that body. The GX8 is every bit as good as the Pen F, in my opinion without the premium. I didn’t like the XE4 because it was simplified. My choice would have been the XE3. I’m satisfied with my XE1 though. Hi Emily. I would be sold but no mechanical shutter AND the one thing I absolutely need is a viewfinder due to my vision, especially outdoors. Will there be an external viewfinder available?
Lovely review, thanks Emily! This ongoing full frame obsession crippled an otherwise awesome product. A GX9 II would be a more sensible option for the same photographic goals. The compact size and ergonomics of the GX9 with the G9 II's internals. I'm sure Panasonic's product folks are no idiots, and I experience it in the my own photographer community that a FF sensor is pretty much a must these days, but I see no reason why would anyone buy this over the Sony A7C, which has an EVF and a good enough set of compact FF lenses for the same price. The real-time LUT is very nice, but not enough to sell this camera in my opinion. And given the unique compact primes of m4/3 it still seems a missed opportunitynot to release an updated GX9... With an f/1.8 lens you can get away with ISO800 with limited light and ISO3200 worst case. FF will pull away from ISO6400 and onwards, but you have zero need for that in a travel / EDC camera paired with fast primes. Sports, nature, sure, but vlogging / street / travel photography? Just give me a break from this unreasonable FF fixation please...
Excellent video. I am not in the market for the Lumix S9 myself, having bought an X-T5, two Nikon Zfs and a Fuji X100VI this year, but I love staying up to date with the market and your video is really informative and your enthusiasm is catching. Loved it.
Very interesting, I love what this suggests about the future of camera technology. There's a lot to like about this model, but as a long term M43 user (GF1 -> GX7 -> GX8) it's not quite right for me. I totally agree with you about small lenses, so to move on from the GX7/8 to this (and great out of camera colours would persuade me to buy one) I'd need those electronics in an M43 body. Preferably a body with a flat top and the GX8's viewfinder in the top corner (it's a lot more "packable" than the ones with a central bump). But 👍 to Panasonic for some top notch work on the electronics!
I didn't have any problems when out and about in direct sunlight in terms of composing. Where I DID have issues is when using the new F8 lens. Despite it being f8, one day half my photos were out of focus because the focus throw is so short and I couldn't check via the evf. Seemed perfectly fine on screen. Even set off the focus peaking. That was the only day I missed the evf
Hi Emily, great video - thank you. I really get your comment that this camera should have been M43. Why did Panasonic stop the GX line? The two in this video are the Lumix 26mm f8 pancake prime which is coming out alongside the s9, and also the Brightin Star brass lens, which is 26mm f2.8 😊
In my opinion it's the winner for creators. Just waiting for the app to be available for iOS as well and Lumix has really won. In camera real time luts are amazing feature indeed.
A camera with editable LUTs sounds fab. I run around the mountains here regularly and was actually considering hoofing a gfx50/Sigma fp, but with a quick way of processing images/video sounds appealing.
Was excited when i saw this at first, ofc thinking of the GM1 but looking further into it... it's a weird combination of Features/trade-offs. Too much of an inbetween camera. You could get an A7C or a GM1, heck, maybe both if you're going for used and be probably better off.
Have the gx800 but I´m missing the evf. Would have loved this one, but still no evf!? Would love to give them feed back. Still love my gx800. I have been a news photographer. Please I want a rangefinder style m/43 camera or fulframe.
Maybe there will be a gx9 successor based on this body, a la the g9 ii and the S5 ii?? If there are say 3 or 4 f2.8 compact primes for this camera it’ll make more sense as a camera line.
The Panasonic GM1 is one of my favorite cameras. This is like a full frame GM1. Once there are more lenses available I could see myself purchasing a S9.
@@MicroFourNerds Thanks for the reply. I hope Panasonic will add live composite in a firmware update later. Seems like this would be good for this camera it.
I like the Brightin Star 28mm f2.8. It's manual focus and M mount but super small even with an adapter. I've also got a little silver TTArtisans 50mm f2
The x100v build really is above and beyond, it's made of solid metal basically with a magnesium alloy body and aluminium top. The dials are also metal and very tactile. I think the x100v is definitely in a different league when it comes to build quality, but it out-performs pretty much every camera on the market in that department tbh! The Lumix S9 is very well built, with plastic style dials and buttons. It feels very similar to the S5ii in terms of build quality. Definitely robust, and extremely light, but not flimsy.

well ive jumped in with this camera because it was only £900 with kit lens direct from Panasonic last week . No brainer ! Look forward to discovering what I can get out of it. Also purchased the LUTs pack to maximise my experience . Thanks !
The Nikon ZF looks like a much better option if looking for a “compact” ff with great video specs (although not nearly as compact). Different dials, and no LUT, but for all the missing hardware in the s9, I’d take the ZF any day for almost the same cost
Used to feel the same way. Then I shot the Ricoh GR exclusively for a year, now I rarely use the EVF on my Canon. The LCD is like my frameline and I can still see everything around it easily. I live in Mexico too and sunny days has never been a real issue.

20 minute recording limit at 1080p. That's not "modern".
Even GoPro's with everything crammed into a tiny package can do at least twice that at 4K/60
Alright Lumix, you can come out now. This camera is trash, the sales will back my opinion.
I appreciate you actually saying you wished it was m43...definitely would sell more since the smaller lenses and more than likely cheaper too
Good idea but I agree: This should have been M43. With full-frame lenses, this will have the same problem that the Nikon Zf may have. It will just feel too front heavy without a real grip. Other than that, good that Panasonic does something new 👍
An M43 version of this does exist, it's the gx9. although an update for that camera needs to happen to get it up to date with the latest features

Wonderful video Emily! I always enjoy what you create!!
I agree that this should have been M43. With Real Time Lut and and the size it could have made me a convert. My thing is, for me no VF and a flip screen is a dealbreaker. So close though. Happy to see them going back to compact cameras.
Get the xt50. That has both
How about apsc?
@@superstringsbro The X-T50 is great. I had a chance to give it a try in person at a Fuji event last week. I like the LUT idea of Panasonic and the fact that being FF and all that but the X-T50 is pretty good. It's actually a hair smaller than the OM-5 even.
@@superstringsbro I have the fuji xt30ii currently and do really enjoy it. Just would rather have the rangefinder style body, and it looks like it'll be a year+ before we get the xpro4/xe5. Was hoping new m43 bodies with the latest tech from the S5ii would make it to the full range of lumix bodies.
In my opinion, this is a bungled effort. Hope I’m wrong for Panasonic’s sake.

Isn't it epic?! The GX8 has been my main EDC for about 6 months now. Weather sealed, evf... kinda pretty for a lumix camera. SO under rated
Sometimes I think about all the Lumix glory in GX8:
- weather sealing
- oled EVF
- touch screen
- good enough grip
- ibis
- 4k
oh god, 9 years from now, forgotten perfect tech world until effective marketing managers crippled everything
How is the wifi via nfc in the GX-8? I'm thinking about picking one up.
how is the video stabilization for the GX8/9? i found both of these used for quite cheap and i'm thinking of buying either one as a hybrid shooter to get away from my iPhone.
I 100% agree. So many tiny lenses already on the market!
Same here, after trying different systems I realized that the form factor of lenses is more important to me than the cameras.
The S9 is a strong statement that the GX9 II (or any compact photo-oriented rangefinder-style camera) is not likely in the future.
Yeah I was disappointed when I saw this was full frame not m43 :')
@@rumrill5020eather this or its going to be in the exact body, g9ii sensor, ibis, pdaf, but no evf
Thanks Gordon! Yes... and I also have to assume my little corner of the Internet is rather biased in favour of m43 too 😂

Panasonic should be thanking you. You have shown the best photos I’ve seen in the numerous S9 reviews I’ve watched.
they did
also Panasonic uses stock images to promote this camera
S9 preordered! Despite lots of online hate for the specs, I saw the joy it brought you (and many others) and so I took a chance! As an M43 user, I'm looking forward to adding some full-frame loveliness (and real-time LUTs) to my shots. 😎
I so very much love your content Emily. You are by far the most gorgeous being on UA-cam. Keep up the great content, you’re awesome.
Sorry if i missed it, but which lens was that for the vlog portion?
Good question - it was on my friend Josh Cameron's S9. I think it might have just been the standard Lumix stock lens !
And for when I was talking to camera and walking it was also the standard stock lens 😊
Thank you!
omgosh yes! was so excited to see your take and the opacity roll off is MAJOR!!!!
It is so handy!! Half my LUT setup is "preset 60" "preset 80" etc then I can choose the strength as I shoot. It's a camera nerds dream 🙈

May I ask, does the color effect of LUTs, also applies into the raw files?
You can alter the raw file however you like in editing when shooting with real time lut, but for ease inside the Lumix Lab, the preview shows in the colours you shot in, then you can change it to anything else like a standard LUT file 😊

As always, you did a great job on this review, Emily
I've seen other S9 reviews, and one feature they mentioned was the variable zoom that automatically, and smoothly, crops down, in order to get longer zoom. It's an improvement on the S5 II version that you have to manually select prior to starting recording.
Did you use it, and what did you think of it?
Ya know... it is superb! I used it today when I was up at Shibuya Sky when I was super high up (my latest post in Insta) and it's so handy!!

You convinced me to pick up this camera instead of the S5Mk2! One question: what are the small lenses coming up?
I take the Oly 5 miii out and use that as my throw in the bag go anywhere cam, but I want a panny, as you said that's like the GM1 or my GX850 that has IBIS, LUT's and up to date specs.
can you add grain too?
You can!

Beautiful shots. Haven't owned or used a real camera for 10+ years. Getting the itch again seeing what this camera shoots.
Let me say the S9 looks great, for a casual photographer and light video user it seems perfect.
The lack of weather sealing means I, personally, would just stick to my og S5 (that I bought nee when it came out) which is still capable and dirt cheap even new.
So to sum up - I would definitely buy the S9:
- if I didn’t have the S5
- if I didn’t have the ZV-E1 which is similar, but much, much more video oriented
- if I didn’t have three GX80/GX85 which are in my opinion peak m4/3 FUN and also heavy inspiration for the S9, with a ton of fun, small, even professional lens options AND a viewfinder. And I hope people would not take this the wrong way and the GX80 used prices won’t skyrocket as they did with the GM series
After watching your GM1 video this thing seems absolutely massive 😂

I am hoping they'll make an accessory. But without the hotshoe it would need to be Bluetooth i guess? I am also crossing my fingers on that front
Sadly, I’ll need to hold off then. That and the electronic shutter. Thanks for responding!
Not me I am getting one. I cant take my 1dx mk3 as an everyday camera but this definitely fits the bill.
Please shate if there is any recommended pancake lens. Plesse share if there will be external recording limits.

so my S5 one can use the lab app?
Is it bright enough to see the LCD panel during daylight?
I didn't have any problems when out and about in direct sunlight in terms of composing. Where I DID have issues is when using the new F8 lens. Despite it being f8, one day half my photos were out of focus because the focus throw is so short and I couldn't check via the evf. Seemed perfectly fine on screen. Even set off the focus peaking. That was the only day I missed the evf

How many focus points 👉 tell
Have the gx800 but I´m missing the evf. Would have loved this one, but still no evf!? Would love to give them feed back. Still love my gx800. I have been a news photographer. Please I want a rangefinder style m/43 camera or fulframe.
Maybe there will be a gx9 successor based on this body, a la the g9 ii and the S5 ii??
If there are say 3 or 4 f2.8 compact primes for this camera it’ll make more sense as a camera line.
Yes, you predicted correct and yes I what that as a m43. Also, you are so very good at this in every way, keep it up.
I absolutely love that they did the RGB colorways. I would love one of these if I was involved with L mount. Definitely cool.
Hi do you know when the LUMIX Labs app will be available?
I imagine it'll be available alongside the s9 release, which I think is at least a month or two off yet, though you can pre-order
@@MicroFourNerdsAh yes good point. I’m not getting the S9 but I’m looking forward to using iLumix Labs with my S5ii 👍. Thanks!
So this camera or Fuji xh2?
I wonder whether you can use Leica M lenses with an adopter on it!
You can! That little brass Brightin Star lens is M mount 😊
The Panasonic GM1 is one of my favorite cameras. This is like a full frame GM1. Once there are more lenses available I could see myself purchasing a S9.
Does it have live comp mode or handheld high res mode? What about pre shutter burst mode?
No live composite. Yes hand held high resolution. Yes pre burst mode (30 fps)
@@MicroFourNerds Thanks for the reply. I hope Panasonic will add live composite in a firmware update later. Seems like this would be good for this camera it.
@@selimsaim me too! It would be a great fit, and it follows the "already edited and ready to share" sort of style of this camera
What lens were you using. The non LUMIX one?
What was that tiny little pancake lens I kept seeing and does it work for MFT?
Just full frame unfortunately. The pancake lenses on m43 are SO much better 😊
@@MicroFourNerds which lens was it at 4:30? Maybe one day I’ll have a full frame
@@seetheclay that was the lumix 35mm f1.8 - my fave of the set of primes!
What lens did you use for the photos and for recording the video? The footage is absolutely stunning!
What lenses is there for Lumix S9.... you seem to have some very small lenses on it...... but cant see what kind of lens and what brand it is
I like the Brightin Star 28mm f2.8. It's manual focus and M mount but super small even with an adapter. I've also got a little silver TTArtisans 50mm f2
The pics look amazing! This is a great camera. Finally the Japanese camera companies are starting to realize what we want.
May I know that could we use adopter and M43 lens for this camera?
Unfortunately no, there's no way to adapt m43 to L mount (or vice versa)
@@MicroFourNerds sorry to hear that and many thanks for your quick response! Let's keep shooting and make more videos!
This camera is seriously appealing. Could you confirm whether the build is anywhere near Fujifilm (x100) build quality. Thanks!
Excellent Video Emily, with some lovely & very colourful images, Thks. Initially I was thinking, poss camera for me, but then no viewfinder and also too few buttons .. But it certainly worked for you !
well ive jumped in with this camera because it was only £900 with kit lens direct from Panasonic last week .
I have to have an evf, no really I do! I do love the blue version though 😍
totally. no evf, no go. i hit the point in the video where called out no evf and sadly stopped watching. cool cam for a lot of other people tho :)
Used to feel the same way. Then I shot the Ricoh GR exclusively for a year, now I rarely use the EVF on my Canon. The LCD is like my frameline and I can still see everything around it easily.
I live in Mexico too and sunny days has never been a real issue.
@@-grey sun is rarely a problem in the UK, my old eyesight is. With an evf I can adjust the diopter to my needs, without one I would need reading glasses to see the screen/settings, but then have to take them off to see the scene 🧐
Yes an m4/3rds version would be superb . When its available in the UK soon I hope to try one out to discover if it suits my needs and how I capture photos.
