  • Well this was chaotic! Equipment failure, a broken down train and a car that might not be quite as good as I'd hoped...
The car in question is a 1996 Toyota Camry XV10 V6 estate, built in Kentucky. They were also built in Japan (saloons) and Australia (sedans and wagons).

Love the Video. Love the car. Love all cars. Excellent Hubnut video with the as-usual very good commentary. This car will soon be sold - the seats will be too hard, the ride too hard, no waft, no soft 'old French car' suspension. Or something! Keep up the excellent work Ian. Best wishes for Christmas.

I once went by train to collect an 850 mini. The ticket office was closed, so bought a 'permit to travel' which cost£1 and sort of proved you had the intention of buying a ticket. Fifty miles later, no ticket collector had appeared, so I left the train and saw no staff on the station as I left for the garage. That's what I call cheap travel!

I'm in Canada, Robert, and the combination of the effects from Covid, and the chip shortage needed for new cars has the dealers scrambling to get something to sell. They're offering big dollar for used cars, bringing the price for used up for everybody. The dealer I used to work for has a very busy service department full of older cars to be repaired.

@@shugthehornyhaggis there may be computers but they are simple and uncomplicated. There are four computers in my 1994 Volvo (ECU, dashboard infocentre, CEM and ABS), all work independently (no interconnect) and if one breaks I can replace it with one from a scrap car by simply swapping the part. Most things are analog and can be fixed by a DIY mechanic.
For my 2011 Volvo, I need a laptop and a special interface and software to diagnose the car. Swapping a failed computer? Forget it, they are programmed with the VIN and need a dealer to reprogram.

@@dlittlester oh yes we have that problem here too. Nevertheless people are willing to pay a lot more for five and six cylinder cars than for those with downsized turbocharged three and four pot engines, with their excessive oil consumption and timing chain issues. I've never regretted buying my 3.0l 6, even when filling the tank, as there's a nice mix of reasonable power from an unstressed engine together with not too horrendous fuel consumption - but then I think sub 20 mpg around town is acceptable. The funny thing is that with the LS1 V8, the giant mid-90s Buick Roadmaster estate returned better consumption figures on the highway than a 6 cylinder Toyota, and the Buick was sporting a 5.7 litre similar to a Corvette engine. My 89 Mercury Grand Marquis saloon with a 5.8 litre, 351 cid, V8 returned a solid 40 miles to the Imperial gallon. It wasn't too bad in the city either.

We have a 1994 Camry V6 LE sedan (US Spec) the biggest continuous issue we have had are having to every replace the valve cover gaskets and we’ve had to replace the power steering pump a couple times. The power steering pump being bad can cause it to overheat because the cooling fan is driven by hydraulic pressure from the power steering pump. It’s sitting at about 182,000 miles (292,900 kms approximately)

The ancient train is a Class 150, built between 1984 and 1987. Based on the HST coach bodyshell, and quite sophisticated in some ways, with their air-cushion suspension. I think the only thing that really dates them is the lack of air-conditioning. But they were designed for commuter work and local stoppers - it's unusual to see one on the Shrewsbury - Telford - Birmingham International run, which is a relatively fast limited stop route. But then, I think Transport for Wales has been allocating trains to routes by pulling numbers out of a hat just recently.

One of the virtues of the importing of used JDM cars in NZ is that it's changed the used car dealer scene. There are still some rogues and thieves, but a lot of places can make money by sourcing good cars at auctions in Japan and selling them here with less trouble than bodging up a dunger. A naive punter like me pays too much, probably, but at least you get a decent car. But whatever the provenance, it's a Toyota: it may need fixing, but it will be fixable and stay fixed, and I'm so glad to see you in a sensible car for daily family use, disguised as exotic by the rear wipers.

A test for gas in the waters clearly coming, but to be honest could just be old rubber hoses on a car not driven anything like as far as you had to get home in a long time. £2k hurts though. I try to limit my purchases to under £300, at £500 I would want something exotic. Last big purchase was a Dodge Caliber - the wife wanted the wine chiller. I had a similar issue on my Rover P6B, didn't get hot but spilled coolant nonetheless. Turned out one of the head gaskets had failed, allowing exhaust gases being pumped into the cooling system which then released a halfpint of coolant through the overflow every now and then.

Those Class 150 trains were the first modern trains I travelled on - that is, the first trains which weren't steam and actual living museum pieces. They were built in the mid-80s, so not quite museum vintage yet, and still quite a few in operation.
    Good luck with coolant.

Unlike old clunker cars, old clunker trains in the UK still have lease payments to private finance companies , despite the tax payer having already outright purchased them many years before privatisation.

Keeping the fingers crossed for you, that the little green creek appearing from under the engine does not lead to a severe "Oh Bother!" moment......or OBM if you prefer. I'd like to see this one work well for you - those twin rear wipers need to stay in your life for a while and put that spring back in your step after so many knocks from the fleet in the last few months. Let's hope it's washer fluid or moisture from the air conditioning or something similarly innocuous or minor. All the best.

I really hope this one is full of pleasant surprises. A coolant leak, as you know, can be anything on the cooling system. Head gasket failures are rare unless there's been significant overheating.
K-seal is a good longer term stop gap if it is a head gasket and it's only coolant leaking.

    • @lukem9962

I despise kseal I'd only use it on a car I'd scrap at the end I brought a lada niva full of it because the radiator was crusty it took ages to clear it out

Owned one when my kids were young. Also a V6 but white. If you have the rear facing third row, that can be very useful on a long trip (ask me how I know!). Died after 120,000 miles with a bad transmission which wasn't worth fixing. Good luck!

  • @-triumphgt667
    @-triumphgt667 2 роки тому +1

Have had two of these - both the V6 GX model with leather seats - both did well over 150,000 miles - first one suffered from a rusty fuel tank which was going to cost more than the value of the car and the second eventually had problems with the brakes - simple fix possible but parts just too expensive. Fantastic cars - fast and comfortable and very spacious. The garage that serviced it always said it was hewn from solid and the best made cars that they could think of. The first one I bought from new - got a huge discount as they just couldn't sell them - same price as a Mercedes E class. The second we travelled 200 miles to get because we just wanted another one! Hate to say this, but had a spare radiator for this till recently - only got rid of it a year or so ago as seemed very unlikely I would ever need it!

The old question of whether build quality vs maintenance history is most important in buying a used car.
For older cars I believe top notch maintenance is preferable to build quality.
Would you rather have a perfectly maintained FIAT or a semi abused Toyota?

    • @ebutuoyYT
      @ebutuoyYT 2 роки тому +1

@Uncle Gilbert That would be ideal, however that combination would push up the price of the car, compared to a car with a less perfect reputation. Also, those unicorn vehicles are hard to find, many people focus on brand, and ignore better maintained cars with the wrong badge.

Hi Ian, maybe it´s time to get yourself a wood gasifier operated car. My grandfather had this in 1950. And it had some popularity in the mid 1970ies as well.
1 Liter of fuel is almost 2 Euro here in Germany with prices going up. All kinds of energy went up double and more in the last months. You can´t even load a Tesla with a fast charging socket since there is no electrity system to provide fast charging...
We need to back up a couple of decades to rediscover what did work for our ancestors...

Hey man if you need any help with anything on the wagon a good page to join on FB would be 3rd / 4th gen camry krew. I also posted this wagon when it was for sale on the group. It was quite a hit for us US folks. Didnt expect anyone to buy it and make a video on it. Such a clean station wagon for the price. And incredible low miles!. ( which doesn't always mean reliable) unfortunately only because it was either not taken care of or taken care of when someone previously owned it. Although i dont think youll be having many problems with it. These wagons are truly tanks. And the v6s engines as well. I myself here in California have had a 1994 Toyota camry wagon v6 le 7 seater. Just sold to a buddy of mine but also just bought a 1995 Toyota camry wagon le v6 in grey last month with 85k miles. My 94 is on my youtube channel here. Although haven't recorded one of my 95 yet!. Dual wipers for the win!.

Turned the heater up in mid-December is not a sign of anything. However, the car dealer turning up in a striped jumper, black eye mask and carrying a bag marked 'Swag', probably was a sign of something. As was the rear view mirror shot when Hubnut drove off in it of the dealer crying with laughter, shoulders violently shaking and him doing one of those 'shaking his wrist with a half-opened fist' signals.
