Game of Thrones Theme (cover) for 23 Low Brass. (11 Bass Trombones, 6 Contrabass Trombones, 6 Tenor Trombones, 6 Tubas, and 3 Cimbassos)
A few New York City low brass players were joking around at a gig a year ago, talking about how much fun it would be fun to record an arrangement of some cool piece of music with an "extra low" low brass section. (Meaning: an extra special amount of bass trombone players, along with a tuba and a few tenor trombones.) An epic piece of music like the Game of Thrones theme would be perfect for this. The idea almost never got off the ground, due to the expected difficulties in putting something like this together. Two weeks ago, with the current Game of Thrones season coming to a close and the deadline approaching to release this track, they realized there was actually a 90 min timeslot on a random Tuesday afternoon when 6 contrabass trombone players were all going to be free at once. It was time to do it. Once you get Six Contra players in one place, you either run away fast- or join in. Seventeen other top orchestral and commercial NYC low brass players joined them, bringing the ensemble to 23 players, and this is the result. Enjoy the sound.

I literally just said to myself ‘oh shit it’s going down’
i love that nasty growl that trombones get when they blast :) so epic
I like the sound of the tuba with it, like a deep blanket wrapping around the room
There is something deep inside any low brass player that hears this and just starts cackling with glee, guaranteed.
That's exactly what I did as soon as I started listening. I didn't stop until well after the third listen-through.
holy goosebumps. I miss playing
You couldn't be more right.
Cackling with glee? More like hard core fangirl SQUEALING!!!
This made me so happy
Low brass is the best brass
Will Leslie low brass is the only important brass
Ok, anyone else love that feeling you get when the low brass section hits that low octave in warm up or whatever and you can feel the vibrations of the sound in your ribs? And it fills up your entire body and its mindblowingly amazing? God I love that.
me too
And that’s why I play bass trombone

game of trombones.

When you play the Game of 'bones you either win or die.
Making people laugh 2 years in the future
Hell yeah!
I'd watch it!
Is it legal to have this many bass trombones in one room??? ✌🏼👍🏼
disneymatt01 shut up jealous Woodwind
No!!
No just bad for your ears(I mean, they are really loud) and your friendship with your Neighbors:)
disneymatt01 and contrabass
I will make it legal.
It's my goal in life to play in a low brass ensemble like this
The sheer power of all those bass bones in one room (to say nothing of the contras) sends shivers down my spine
Same here BASS BONE FOR LIFE
I would enjoy breaking surrounding windows and causing earthquakes in a group like this
put one together and do it!
MedicMuffin it’s a earthquake
that's what she said
The divine flatulence of God is the best way to describe this.

😂😂😂
ahahahahaha. dude i almost peed!!
LMFAO
This is badass. Thanks for the eargasm.
You're welcome.
Dawn Haggerty Amen to that!
fun fact: playing low brass leads to hair loss
Some sacrifices must be made
@christopher bill
It does not 😱
It just means that men who play low brass dont need the extra hair to be manly, and their body realizes this fact.
💀💀💀
I can't even fathom my lips vibrating that slowly
I play baritone and when the notes are that low you hardly vibrate them at all you just blow air through closed lips
As someone who plays trombone I can gladly say you loosen your lips not vibrate slower. The tighter your lips are or the more closed they are the higher the noise. I can play almost every octave, except the highest. On brass there is a infinite amount but there is a point it takes god himself to get higher or lower.
I play the tuba and most of the notes on euph and trombone seem pretty high to me.
@@theosmith2214 you should watch the "tuba solo" from mnozil brass
I have split my lip while playing loud and low on a bass trombone. I think if I ever played contra, my water key would actually be a blood key.
just wondering how 'misty mountain' from 'the hobbit' would sound with them...
tobias schultheiss yes lawd
104 people cannot hear below 100 Hz.
what?
Now 106 and counting.
Andrew Futrell
correction 106 XD
No Sir, people cannot usually hear below 16Hz! Maybe you should learn something and then write your opinions:) Let's count a1=440Hz(Chamber A), a=220Hz, A=110Hz, a-contra=55Hz, a-subcontra=?? :-D
100 Hz > 16 Hz. Yes I did not provide the minimum frequency to the human ear, but I expected people to imply there is a bottom to that range. I normally do not provide specifics because that comes down to the individual level. :)
when they pulled out those contrabass trombones i had a brassgasam
Let trumpet players quake in their boots as they hear this
Cole Drinkwater we all quake
Fear us you fools
I'm not wearing boots bitch
but I can play trumpet and tuba
Jokes on you, the only thing quality in that trombone
that was the most epic shit I ever took
(sorry there were too many relatively sophisticated/civil comments and I felt the need to butt in)
True
+Chinesepizzagames Did you say _butt_ in? Was that pun intended?
+Brainsicles no shit
ZeroWolf What a crappy pun
No worries.
Just toilet your mealings get cramped in.
Bass Trombones getting to play Contra Bass Trombones only in our dreams
Honestly I wish I could play a contra bass trombone
Low brass players don't need no steenking conductor!!
Right on, my brother!
I'd like to propose the tuba section seceding from the rest of the low brass section as an independent section
They all wear headphones. Click-tape?
yeah we usually have to keep everyone else in time, we've gotten good at keeping it ourselves
Opposite day?
As a trombonist and recording engineer myself.... I can't get over how awesome this is! Stoked for the behind the scenes video!
Those pedal C's omg
Most vids containing "Epic" disappoint me.
But this one delivers!
0:38 gotta love how they picked up those contrabasses man! they looked so in the zone
I just realized how crappy my earphones are at reproducing bass
Buy some beyerdynamics dt 990 pro: great for classic got em too
This is the definition of heavy metal.
that moment you realize that you've never watched an actual episode.
I said that.. up until last week.. on series 4 now... OMG
You aren't missing that much. The original Lord of The Rings movie trilogy (Peter Jackson) is a much better work of art, with good messages about life (Integrity, courage, true friendship and meaningful relationships, which are not overcome by greed and decadence... Doesn't mean you can't bear your teeth and not be a piece of 💩, when the situation comes around. Don't be influenced by a dark and cynical point of view (Not to mention, wrong.), pushed mostly by university weirdos, Hollywood, corporate jerk-offs and the majority of what you find on the Internet these days, including social media. More like Lame of Thrones?
I had never even heard of a cimbasso before and now I've seen three of them.
that was our plan.
Trumpet Player: I'm really good at playing Game of Thrones..😌
Trombone Player: Hold my beer.
Hahahaha😂
Nah hold my slide oil
@@chemo2908 slide oil sound so weird, tuba players have valve oil and slide grease lol
That swap over from bass to contrabass is probably the most intimidating thing I've ever seen o.o
As a Trombone player and lover of Film Music, this makes me extremely happy.
That was epic.
At this point, with this many brass instruments, the sound is so fat or chunky, you may as well be playing an analog synthesizer sawtooth. That's incredible. What a great sound.
Holy mother of Contrabass trombone land that sounded good!!
What a fantastic group of trombonists all gathered in one place!
Would love to hear more!
Awesome to see one of my old beginning band students, Max Seigel, in the video...
sees the contrabass trombones and cries from how beautiful they sound.
Gives me goosebumps every time I listen to this beautiful cover.
Well this is ever so slightly epic
First glance: huh this is good
Spies row of contrabasses: OH GOD YES!! HOLY Shyt!! My dreams have come true!
Game of Bones
ikr
Just absurd...absurdly awesome!
Those bass trombones are so awesome.
I listen to this every day wishing I could be as good as these men
Just amazing. That is the reason why I've started to play contrabass!
This makes me proud to be a trombone player😌
This gives me chills
Sends shivers down my spine.
this is amazing, I've watched it like 30 times and it still can't get any better
The deep trumpets and trombones make for aggressive "dark" imperial music. Like a lumbering dinosaur, an evil army encroaching or a vast empire conquering. It is the sound of predation. "When they come... people are going to die."
There are no trumpets here
these guys are awesome. I am a huge fan of the show, but to hear them play by themselves is amazing. Keep up the good work!!!
Music is truly something else
2 flute players watched this video
What were they doing here? Hope they recover soon.
BoveAudio lol i play a contrabass clarinet and a bass because there were no trombones left
they probably realized that they were playing an inferior instrument. lol
+TheBrassHole.com Sorry to break your bubble. But I double on flute and trombone. I'm not recovering from anything, but enjoying awesome music. ;)
well, we've found one, now where's the other?
I was waiting to see someone pass out.
Wow. Those sub-pedal Double Bass Trombones knock me out. I'll bet Richard Strauss and Gustav Mahler are salivating at this musicianship.
Win Hinkle, they would be if they were still alive.
Adam Brink lmfao got me dying

Ahhh this is so beautiful
Awesome. Just plain awesome 👏
So I guess you'd call this "ContraBand"? ..... Awesome!
If you listen closely enough you can hear all of the massive intakes of breath.
All of you did a fantastic job!
This is so sick
WOOF! This is so freakin' deep, makes me wonder if the overtones get past one kilohertz! [Yeah, I'm an audio nerd, but an audio nerd WHO LOVES GOOD MUSIC!]
This is why I went into tuba
I've never seen so many contrabasses before holy
Absolutely brilliant!
Would loose myself If I had the opportunity to see live!!!
Well done!
My bones are shaking.
This should have been used in the intro of every episode
Sounds great!
Hey Andy, Jay Michalak from old NU days! This was a real treat - my students found this while geeking out! Thanks man! All the best to you!
Hi Jay! Glad your students have such excellent taste in music!
At 1:09 the mega low tuba represents my stomach after Mexican food
The best sound ever.
Low woodwinds are considered low brass in band at my school like i play bass clarinet so me and the only other bass clarinet just do what lows brass does but this sounds great LOWS FOREVER!
The first person to correctly identify the episode/scene the second half of this track is pulled from will receive a digital download of the track at full resolution (before the track is made available).
Sounded like a white walker scene.
It's the last scene of the second season (in episode 10), when the White Walkers are on their way to attack the Fist of the First men. On the soundtrack recording it's entitled "Three Blasts."
kirbybriane S2E10 "Three Blasts" has much of the same melodic material, but is not the correct answer. It is very similar, but does have a slightly different structure. "Three Blasts" is an awesome tune for sure.
Markus Setså Borge Correct. (Msg sent via UA-cam messaging.)
BoveAudio Are you positive it's not Three Blasts? Upon listening to both, this cover sounds MUCH more similar to Three Blasts than Oathkeeper.
I can only imagine that all the dislikes were left by non ow brass members
Gabe Henson Triggered trumpet players
woodwinds :P hihi
No, they’re left by triggered euphoniums
Right
What is that instrument on 1:35
High brass may have the melody, but the low brass is the POWERHOUSE behind the entire band's sound.
this is one of my favourite things ever
No euphoniums? NO EUPHONIUMS?!?!?!?!?!?
long live the trombone! ;)
THE TROMBONE RULES ALL
I'm with you on this one. Though I suspect our more mellow, sophisticated euph sound would be out of place in an intentionally brash, guttural interpretation such as this ;)
trombone is love trombone is life!
In orchestral stuff there not really low brass, or even in orchestras.......
There are some really nice moments in the score from each of the seasons. This is basically the main title theme and some other thing which, I'm guessing, is based on the white walkers' march on the Fist of the First Men from the end of Season 2.
If this were to include some of the other music like Rains (Reynes?) of Castamere and some of the Daenerys Targaryen stuff it would be a bit more interesting.
The "other thing" is lifted directly from an episode. Yes, it involves whitewalkers, but it's not from the last eposode of Season 2. Everyone had a ton of fun recording, and if we get enough views, I can see the guys getting together to record some more tunes for next year.
sublime & sublime
this is the best cover ever
Very Good! Show.
Could have more songs. A full cd!
Hugs from Brazil.
Fantastic, though to be honest, I couldn't help longing for some horns, wagner tubas, maybe even some ophicleides in the mix.
We may do that next time. Stay tuned.
Horns aren't low brass. Although that could be cool.
I think the trombone was fine. What I would have liked was some percussion, like a Tam Tam hit at the end or a bass drum to play hits with the contrabass bones. Maybe squeeze in a Timpani, but that might be a little too much clutter.
So thunderous and commanding
I cried tears of joy and happiness as I listened to this. I have a feeling this will be the closest thing to heavens sounds that I will ever hear on earth.

Awesome, thank you!
So what ended up being the correct name of the piece in the second half of the score?
Is from the end credits of one the season 4 episodes. We answered the exact spot on one of these comment threads.
Sheet music please?! lol (Not expecting anything, though it would be cool to see!)
tubajoe on instagram has a great shot of the score. (Nice low notes.) I'll ask about releasing parts.
BoveAudio Did you ever hear anything about releasing the sheets?
Simply epic
*Gasp* CONTRABASS TROMBONES! AND A LOT OF THEM! BASS TROMBONES! AND MORE THAN I'VE EVER SEEN IN ONE PLACE!
Dat Bass
I play the deepest instrument , clarinet
lol
hey, you can get a contrabass clarinet
Beautiful music to my ears
Simply amazing
The Lannisters send their regards.
THATS MY TEACHER!!!
hi
Deandre Desir really
Amazing!
As a Trombone player myself, all I can say is WOW... I did not even think this possible thanks for making this, and always KICK BRASS
As usual, leave the tuba players last in the credits.
