Hi Ray, I have a video idea I think would be interesting to cover: garmin coach vs suggested workout (with a set race date) which one adapts better and brings you to the desired outcome? My hypothesis is that Garmin coach relies on older algorithms and doesn't make use of everything the modern HW and SW can provide. Would love to hear your take on this
I haven't used Garmin coach but I've used the suggested workouts with a race scheduled and it's incredibly boring. only got about 4-5 runs it goes through, the sprints are way too easy, just feels like a moderate interval session rather than a sprint. Garmin coach was great because it gave prompts on technique, and some of the coaches gave drills. While DSW only gives you paces, times and number of repeats in different combinations. I'm also curious how people who don't want to run daily use DSW. As a self taught amateur runner, I find it more difficult to make time for strength training with DSW giving me a run every day (excl rest days). I loved the old app. I wish Garmin had sent out a "How To" video. The old app face gave you all the basic data on one screen and allowed you to dig in where you wanted. The new app is a bunch of clusters of absolute sh8, it fails constantly, there is no organized "Face" to it. I HATE it.
When i had a sunnto watch i really loved how easy it was to modify activity screens you see in workouts from the phone app. Trying to set these up in the watch itself i feel is really cumbersome.

What I’d really like from the app is the ability to export the FIT files from my activities without having to go into Safari to get them. All this seems like window dressing and I don’t feel like I’m missing out by not being in the beta!
Technically you can simply plug in your device and grab them there too (Activities folder). If you’re talking from your phone via the GCM app, what’s the use case, out of curiosity?
Ditto. Whenever I want to combine activities into one (long live FIT File Tools), it's annoying I have to go to the GC website on my phone (don't bring my laptop with me on a run). Finishing an activity too early happens more often than one would think.

@@Dcrainmaker I want the FIT files so I can selectively upload to Strava without needing to go via a computer or login via mobile Safari. I appreciate it’s a pretty niche case and unlikely to be a priority for Garmin
@@MattSwain1 Gotchya. It sounds like you're probably trying to limit which activities go to Strava. I actually do the same, but slightly differenetly. I've setup AutoSync to Strava, but then on the Strava side, I've set the default privacy setting to 'Private' for newly uploaded activities. This means everything gets sent to Strava instantly, but nothing shows up for anyone unless I toggle that activity to 'Public'. For those that I don't want, I can simply delete them. Much eaiser!
What really annoys me about Garmin, is that it doesn't take into account non recorded activity. In the fitness age for instance. My non recorded activity is between 200-300 mins vigorous activity (for work) yet if I go to my fitness age it says I do hardly anything.
Isn't fitness age calculated using your vo2 max which is worked from heart rate? My point is... Even if you have not recorded some activities, your heart rate metrics are what counts when it comes to fitness age
It says you can reorder the items on the front page. For the life of me I can't figure out how to do that. Also I am not seeing how this is an improvement. I'd be happy to go back to the app I was used to. Such a big time-waster to do change for the sake of change.
Hey Ray.. I have a Samsung S10 and in Australia.. Just updated my app and it doesn't look like it's available just yet ( or my phone may be a touch too old ).. I'll keep an eye on it.. Thanks again for another killer video.. I've also decided to just have the unpaid Strava app. I'm not paying $99 just to get Kudos and a couple of comments on my running. So with this update, I'm pretty happy with that as I go to GC for all the stats I want.
The biggest problem with the connect is that if you do a ride without a power meter it hardly registers. I've done a 2h+ ride with power on a Saturday then done a tough gravel ride with no power but with a HR monitor for 6h+ on a Sunday and the Saturday ride shows as a harder ride where the Sunday ride looks like it was a waist of time with very little effort showing.
@@elliotgowland8695 Gotchya. In re-reading your comment, I suspect you've fallen into one of the 'traps' of how virtually every training device/platform works today. In a nutshell, they reward high-intensity heart rate zone time more than lower-intensity time. So I suspect you're 2hr ride probably had some substantial peaks in it (HR intensity-wise). Whereas I suspect you're gravel ride, while tough, may not have had as many really high peaks. I see a similar problem with long-hiking quite often. I can go out and do a 5KM run right now, and at a brisk pace, do 200-250 units of load. Yet...I can go do a 14hr hike with 10,000ft of elevation, at a steady but pressed pace, and only end up with 150-200 units of load. Obviously, for the longer activity, my legs hurt more during/after, due to muscular fatigue. But virtually all training devices only measure aerobic fatigue. The singular exception, and really only for weight-lifting when you tag exactly which movements you're doing, is Whoop. Beyond that, it's all aerobic fatigue.
@@DcrainmakerThanks for this, it's just annoying that Training Peaks gives a relative TSS for the effort for the long ride but connect is nowhere near that. Garmin normally has me good to train hard the next day but training peaks graph says otherwise.
Coming from Polar where they can’t even process activities not recorded with the watch I’m already very happy with Connect. Not too bothered by the UI really, only thing I would really want is the ability to edit FR or Edge data screens in Connect and push to the device.
appears you can enroll via the website, but might not push through to the device. secondly the beta might only be for specific products (e.g. fenix 7, etc)
I activated the beta and concluded to deactivate it immediately. Now it is rolled out and no more way back. The so-called overview hides important information behind clicks (show all is on the upper right, hard to reach one handed) or horizontal swipes. The old UX having a more compact list to scroll through was way more informative than big tiles with mainly black background and smaller font (not to disturb the blackness I suppose). Summarizing less information and most of it is hidden behind different user interactions. Has anyone started an online petition yet?
Great overview. Thanks for this. Look forward to seeing it flow through to me. I noticed at 8:10 a summary of your HRV in top right....and even you dip into orange occasionally. I find mine dips into the orange (and red when I had covid recently) although generally it's a low green. But I figured your HRV, being a true fitness man, would be consistently solid green. Although I train hard (rowing 3-4 times week), I also have a few bad habits (occasional smoking at parties, drink too regularly) .... what do you think of HRV Status? Is ithelpful, or noise? I even went to the Doc's for an ECG a while back because it was tracking orange too much....but they said my heart was in good shape. Interested in your thoughts.
Correct me if I’m wrong. But HRV is not a measurement of fitness but how eg you are coping with recovery, stress, alcohol or other aspects of life. It’s also highly individual and you cannot compare to others.
I suppose it's too much to hope that one of the coming updates is unified Body Battery using multiple devices... I have both a Vivomove Trend and an Instinct Crossover and with the Trend as my primary device I'd love to be able to slap on my Instinct for a long weekend of outdoor activity without having to deal with missing Body Battery displays and data mismatches...
Have struggled with the revised app for a month or so now. There is simply no way to make it useful. It takes too long to get the most simple information and what little information there is is no presented in such a large format that it is hard to digest. I have basically removed the app from daily use except that you have to run it to sync the watch. Unfortunately this devalues all that great extra info the fenix 7x Ss provided. I would not have upgraded From my five if this update had come out before I bought the new one.
It seems Garmin wants users to keep buying new gear because they certainly aren't adding new functionality to their older models like Fenix 3, 5, etc. This means that s lot of the cards in the new ui are empty of data and thus an extreme annoyance to swipe through, add or remove as you try to figure out what works with my watch and what doesn't. Furthermore, as you mention, now the level of complication is increased due to having to swipe not only up and down, but also left and right. Just keep the old hompage Garmin. Some of us "engineering" types actually want the raw data in it's totality with no aggregation or consolidation into populist trends or composite markers.
This update is horrible!!!!! I Beta tested it and gave my feedback about how bad it is. I have been a Garmin Connect user for 6 years and loved it until April 19, 2024 when they rolled out the new version. Its a mess. Maybe Garmin will roll back to the old version.
Don’t have beta, but noticed last night when I tried to plan a running route that it had changed. It’s awful, kept saying it couldn’t calculate a route, just awful. That bad after 4 attempts I gave up. I used this feature loads as I travel the country, so like to plan new runs/cycles.
What I want to know is how to pause or reschedule workouts in my training plan. I have been sick the past couple of weeks and have been missing my workouts with no option to reschedule or pause. Please help. Thanks in advance.
Soo no local storage yet... I occasion get it where i have no signal at work and while i can look at things when i get home, i would love the ability to look at least the last weeks data while on lunch under those circumstances.
So I guess no improvements for connections to devices? My Epix gen2 still connects and disconnects all day long running the battery down from 16 days 12 months ago to 4/5 days for the last 5 months.
I wonder when Garmin will implement GOALS into the app! A shame that it's exclusively for the desktop version. Really like how Adidas implemented it into their running app. Super simple and absolutely user-friendly! Garmin should just copy this.
There are goals you can set for your daily steps, floors climbed, activity minutes, calories, hydration, etc. You can also join challenges, solo or group, and compete for Badges. You can plan for events/races etc. What more goal-features do you need?
Yeah, it's still kind of just about functional but without any serious insight outside of "you need more sleep" or "you need to run a bit more" which is blindingly obvious to the wearer.
I dont know... but there are stuff like this... like you might need 9 hours of sleep next night or ... do some exercises to reduce PMS for us girls or eat more omega 3 at luteal tine of your period cycle. You need e.g. 5 hours recovery time till your next workout... pr body battery advice how to create ypur day with having a relaxed day or an active day with sports... the evening report of how your day was.
@@sapo916 yeah... for me garmin got one of the best apps, i dont know oura or whoop m, maybe these are much better, but in relation to samsung, apple and fitbit, it is much better.
So why did they drop the ability to put in custom HR zones in BPM? Now you can only do percentage of Max HR. Not my preferred way to do it. I think many would agree. Especially since even if you put in MHR it tells you the percents for the zones, but not the actual HR range.
I still miss some things. Fe in body battery widget, there is no charts for last weeks - like we can see for sleep score or rest HR. It would be great to have statistic for last 7Ds for best BB value that day. As for trainging readiness - if now in beta we can see updated numbers, great, but it would be great also see the pick numbers for last 7Days. For stats and comparing days.
Hello. Do they add more Gear -functions? Now you can choose only one gear which is automaticly added. With several bikes (MTB, road, gravel) you always have to manually add right bike after activity.
If there is no way to request to be part of the beta and it pop up randomly on people's pjones. How happen you in particular managed to be among the first users ? :P
So true, their app is terrible. I wish garmin would realize they are a software development company who happens to make software for certain hardware devices. Instead they act like they are a hardware company who are forced to make software to support their hardware devices. I know they started as a hardware company, but they need to get with the times here. Maybe this revamp will be a step in the right direction. Now I'll go watch the vid.
@dcrainmaker I noticed that there was a multisport training plan option on your app. Is that an option for the beta program only as I only have running and cycling. Are the multisport plans any good? I've been saying for years garmin needs to implement that option to compete with training peaks
I hope that there's still going to be a collapsed view, as that's what I'm using now.. I have all the data I want to see on one compact screen without any wasted space (on to me irrelevant graphics) around it.
They need to offer multiple map layers for tracks and routes, easy route planner in app, weather overlay and all. It is silly that your watch might have trail maps but your Garmin Connect app does not. Garmin Explore is dumpster fire and does not offer trail map view for your workouts.
I saw “ Multisport” as a training plan option when Ray was scrolling . Does this mean Garmin is finally offering a Duathlon plan or is it only Tri? Anyone know who has the Beta?
Hopefully they fixed double reading HR data when you where a watch while riding when you where a HR Monitor Strap, It takes all data coming in from all activities when it is not on your watch or garmin device and uses ALL Data to use all their measures.. Since that portion of GARMIN Blows!!
How did you get your HUD display to be like that? With the transparent background and the extra stats? I saw that Sauce for Zwift exists but it doesn't seem to look like your screen. Thanks!
Will there be a way to see how adapted to heat or altitude the user is? All I see now is one notification at the end of a bike ride on my 830, but I can't find it in Connect.
Hello and thanks for the video! Why 0.00km on the Indoor training? Also what approach do You use for activities from applications like this, Zwift, FulGaz etc. Direct from the app or manual upload? Asking because it is annoying that Zwift activities are not counted into monthly challenges for example.. Thanks and keep it up!
Wish connect would consider workouts that aren’t on done with my 265 watch. Connect says I’m fresh, when I’m totally spent, even when I upload the data.
Assuming it's a Garmin device, it should definitely be taking that into account. Double-check that your 'Preferred Training Device' says 265 (which, I know sounds obvious, but then it'll pull in those other files).

I loved the old app. I wish Garmin had sent out a "How To" video. The old app face gave you all the basic data on one screen and allowed you to dig in where you wanted. The new app is a bunch of clusters of absolute sh8, it fails constantly, there is no organized "Face" to it. I HATE it.
Are "yesterdays" and "last 7 days" stats still on the home screen? I really like being able to see those stats on the current version
No, they're gone. :(
@@Dcrainmakerohh, that's bad..
When i had a sunnto watch i really loved how easy it was to modify activity screens you see in workouts from the phone app. Trying to set these up in the watch itself i feel is really cumbersome.
Tried the beta version for all of 10 minutes and went back to the original
How did you go back? Wanted to use ECG but it’s not working on the beta.
@@andreaspape8987 go into Settings. Go into Beta program at the top and deselect it and it goes back to the original
@@andreaspape8987 Go to "More" and then Settings in Connect. Go to Beta Program and deselect Join the Beta and it should switch back to the current version
Now it is out of beta (it shouldn't be), and considering the way its gone down (should be Titanic connect), are you going to do a follow up video
It's more of a dumpster fire than the old one. My app updated. Is there any way to go back to the old version?
I prefered the old version on my phone and even more on my laptop.
Enjoying Coros’ products right now. Switched to Pace 3. Love it.
Sheeesh, goes to show how much better Coros app is!
Quite frankly, the UI before was way better and gave you a much better overview of things than what we have now. I seriously hate it...
@@Matheologiahow? in my case it's rather the other way round
@@_Rafiki. no, fitness age takes other things into account as well such as vigorous exercise time, weight (bmi) etc
As more and more Garmin watches support power based running natively, hope they can enable power based Daily Suggested Workouts too
It says you can reorder the items on the front page. For the life of me I can't figure out how to do that. Also I am not seeing how this is an improvement. I'd be happy to go back to the app I was used to. Such a big time-waster to do change for the sake of change.
Thanks
No new features, just a different theme for the home page.
100%
The biggest problem with the connect is that if you do a ride without a power meter it hardly registers. I've done a 2h+ ride with power on a Saturday then done a tough gravel ride with no power but with a HR monitor for 6h+ on a Sunday and the Saturday ride shows as a harder ride where the Sunday ride looks like it was a waist of time with very little effort showing.
Which device? That's actually not a Garmin Connect thing - but rather, a per-device thing.
@@Dcrainmaker I use the 1030 plus, I have friends that have the same issue that use a different Garmin device.
My orange is because the last few weeks we had friends over for the holidays...and...umm...very much depleted our alchohol reserves.
2:09 What kind of virtual cycling platform did you use? I thought it would be Zwift, but it looks slightly different.
This was testing Indievelo.
I'm glad I'm in the 12.3% who are subscribed.
Is Garmin planning to add time in heart rate zones accumulated over time? I would like to se time above my threshold over weeks, month and years.
I just wanna open the app and see the race predictions. Also if I could view my suggested workouts in app and not just on the watch. Thank you!
Finally!! Still can not understand why missing simple things though like you can't see Goals & progress on app, only desktop?!?
What I want to know is how to pause or reschedule workouts in my training plan. I have been sick the past couple of weeks and have been missing my workouts with no option to reschedule or pause. Please help. Thanks in advance.
Soo no local storage yet... I occasion get it where i have no signal at work and while i can look at things when i get home, i would love the ability to look at least the last weeks data while on lunch under those circumstances.
No longer getting training effect or workout benefit data from rides uploaded through zwift since the update
So I guess no improvements for connections to devices? My Epix gen2 still connects and disconnects all day long running the battery down from 16 days 12 months ago to 4/5 days for the last 5 months.
So they just twiddled with the same UI/backend stats they've always had, while it's still inexcusably difficult to configure my devices from the app.
Still not possible to add lap marks to a completed workout? 3rd parties had that 10+ years ago.
@@Maxwaehrens Just look at the goals menu within the Adidas Running app. Then you'll know what I "need" more.
Garmin definitely needs to study other apps and offer something competitive. It’s 2024, put some effort into your app
After using apps like apple health I miss garmin connect
@@sapo916 yeah... for me garmin got one of the best apps, i dont know oura or whoop m, maybe these are much better, but in relation to samsung, apple and fitbit, it is much better.
Yeh like you want more stuff for peanuts don’t you? Go get whoop and their scammy subrsciption bs. You can’t even see time on whoop.
So why did they drop the ability to put in custom HR zones in BPM? Now you can only do percentage of Max HR. Not my preferred way to do it. I think many would agree. Especially since even if you put in MHR it tells you the percents for the zones, but not the actual HR range.
Did they restore the export capabilities that they removed in September? For example, you can no longer export the daily summary..
whats the indoor training app used at 2:10 ?? it looks like RGT
It’s IndieVelo
Still not a possibility to edit an activity before sync...
Hilarious because you’re not the only one “Overreaching”. Kids, no sleep, and high training load - Let’s go!! 😂
Hi Ray, great video as always. What's the Zwift overlay you are using, seen at 2:09?
It is IndieVelo
Yup, correct!
Ok... dont see anywhere the Beta program option. maybe there is firmware update?
I've noticed that since I switched to the Epix Pro (2d version) I get live training status in the app.
So…. Wholesale changes to arrive pretty much back where they started.
@dcrainmaker I noticed that there was a multisport training plan option on your app. Is that an option for the beta program only as I only have running and cycling. Are the multisport plans any good? I've been saying for years garmin needs to implement that option to compete with training peaks
Within the section where you can select Training Plans etc, there's nothing for the Daily Suggested Workouts for the next week which is a shame.
I hope that there's still going to be a collapsed view, as that's what I'm using now.. I have all the data I want to see on one compact screen without any wasted space (on to me irrelevant graphics) around it.
Thx for the video. Can I also have the new update with the old design so the single cards like it is now🤔🙂
They need to offer multiple map layers for tracks and routes, easy route planner in app, weather overlay and all. It is silly that your watch might have trail maps but your Garmin Connect app does not. Garmin Explore is dumpster fire and does not offer trail map view for your workouts.
Could You ask them to put a Weekly goal tab in the app itself. Great Video
The old app worked fine on my old iPhone 8. This “update” seems slow. 😢
Garmin starts following Fitbit on running the app?
I saw “ Multisport” as a training plan option when Ray was scrolling . Does this mean Garmin is finally offering a Duathlon plan or is it only Tri? Anyone know who has the Beta?
I'm also interested in this, it would be great if someone could provide more information on that :)
Signed up for Beta a week ago so I could answer. I’ve not gotten the invite yet 😢😅
Thanks!
Do you have the option to add respiratory rate to homescreen. Iv'e been added to the beta but can't seem to find it on iPhone.
Nooooo! The beta went GA today. So terrible. So many unhappy users. Hopefully DC does an update and rips them! haha
What do you need to do to get the new update app , if you have the old one on your apple phone?
I was hoping for widgets to be introduced for iPhone Home Screen. Still not there?
Wish connect would consider workouts that aren’t on done with my 265 watch. Connect says I’m fresh, when I’m totally spent, even when I upload the data.
Assuming it's a Garmin device, it should definitely be taking that into account. Double-check that your 'Preferred Training Device' says 265 (which, I know sounds obvious, but then it'll pull in those other files).
