    Bing in the. thirties had the best voice I have ever listened to. He was the best, in my opinion.

    Kitty Carlisle was a Juliard trained opera singer, but was very nervous about singing with Bing.Uncle Bing was the first to record this song, before Jack Benny adopted it.

    Some years ago I unknowingly purchased the entire 78rpm record collection that was owned by the famous actress Marilyn Maxwell. Funny how you can tell a lot about the music people listen to. In the box was a 78 still in the sleeve with a tied ribbon in the center hole. The record was purchased new in a record store in London, but never opened and played. It was still brand new. Excitedly, I carefully untied the ribbon and played it for the first time in my restored 1936 Wurlitzer. Magic!! WOW!

    Thanks for posting this scene! This must be the earliest recording I've ever seen or heard of Bing singing - he's still in an earlier era. This is a great song. I had occasion to sing it with my band Fresh Air at a party in Washington DC with a 1920s theme this past weekend. My new favorite song. We lifted Al Bowlly's recording for our arrangement. He treats it very nicely - worth checking out. Best wishes.

    During this period--Bing could sing the phone book--and it would STILL be dreamy and technically perfect! Song STILL reminds me of Jack Benny tho--just as song, :Love Nest-reminds me of George Burns! lol! Hope I'm not giving away my age! haha!

    I would love to see the whole movie: She Loves Me Not 1934 - Bing Crosby, Miriam Hopkins, Kitty Carlisle, Edward J. Nugent, Henry Stephenson, Lynne Overman

    I know, right?! Just like the song "Love Nest" reminds me of George and Gracie"--no matter where I hear it! Funny, George Burns said he hated that song--not the song itself, which he said was fine--but he was just sick of hearing it after so many years. :D

    This slow, melodramatic song would have been forgotten if it weren't for Benny's comic adaptation.

    • @MrJimmymac48
      @MrJimmymac48 6 років тому

      I doubt it would have been 'forgotten'! The story goes that Bing had decided to adopt it as his new theme song, but when his buddy 'Jack' took it and made some audacious fun with it they discarded the theme idea. I think if Bing had used it as a theme song it would have been GREATLY remembered!

    Can't get over how Crosby introduced Love in Bloom, only for his contemporary, Jack Benny, to claim it as his own, unless the two decided to let Benny use it as his theme. Not sure what happened, but the rest is history.

    • @OldTelivisionRocks
      @OldTelivisionRocks 7 років тому +1

      Celluloidwatcher well I CANT find it but I know there was a joke that Bing heard Someone singing it and Bing says something to the effect of who is singing my song and Jack replies something like it may be your song but I made it! They were friends so no harm.... but this is how it became his theme jackbenny.org/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=1240

      Christopher Hall that’s not what I meant.....it was a joke. And Benny also appears to hate it according to George Burns’ bio. But there was a radio program -where Bing suddenly heard the song and asks who is playing *his* song , terribly. “Hey bub have you played this number before?” Jack turns “played it? I made it” “I should have known, Jack Benny” Jack’s theme song. JOKE. Not stating anything about Bings opinion toward the song. Answering the original question about how they both came to claim the songs...

  • @scottkuzminski8114

    Too bad Jack Benny "ripped this off" for himself. After it became solely associated with Jack, seemed like it was lost from the "Great American Songbook". It almost sounds like an Opera aria, especially when Kitty sings it.
    ..BTW, don't you love it when Bing rolls his eyes when waxing romantic? So 1920's!

    • @tomg8638
      @tomg8638 7 років тому +3

      Wonderful song, I agree. But I can't help thinking that Jack Benny kept this song alive long after most songs of the period had faded. Be happy it survived. George Burns & Gracie Allan used "Love Nest" as their theme song on radio and TV. It didn't do any harm, in either case.

      Sorry, but if it weren't for Jack Benny and the occasional Warner Bros cartoon, this song would have gone the way of the dodo well before the Andrews Sisters burst on the stage. Jack Benny's endearing character kept the song not only alive, but on the radio and television on a regular basis until at least 1974, when Mr. Benny passed away. Even now, for those of us who know of or remember Jack Benny, just hearing the first few bars is enough to make us smile.
