It took this video for me to finally realize that Jon Snow is in fact *the* Fire & Ice. How could I have not seen this before?
Definitely, he's the King that was promised.
All he ever wanted was to do the right thing....he just wanted to live and bring peace to Westeros.....he IS the sword in the darkness....he was the shield that guards the realms of men.....the watcher on the wall until the end.....a selfless Dragon who lead his pack like the wolf he was raised to be......he fought....and now he shall rest......n

Really, he just wanted to be accepted as a Stark and live up to Ned's example.
And now his watch has ended.
He was wonderful...and as you say just wanted peace for everyone and never wanted to be a king of anything...he was the only one who felt this way.... everything he did and every choice he made was so hard....I think that's why we love and respect him....and NO he was NOT a bastard EVER!!! Rewatch the series if you missed it......

D&D ruined a perfectly good classic hero. People say his character doesn't belong in GOT because he's not some crafty scheming lord, but why is the main villain in this story a force pure evil that only has one goal which was to destroy all living? if it's never meant to be a old fashioned good vs evil struggle?
