I just got a jouhikko myself, actually i'm a composer singer-songwriter, and I play mostly keyboards, piano, hammered dulcimer and others, but a friend gifted me a kantele and drew me into finnish music so finally go the decision to grab a jouhikko, only a couple of days with it, so trying to look for instructional material :) ty!
@carnright Bridge is flat, at least on a traditional model. The strings are played together almost always, the oldest type had two strings, one melody and one drone string.
Oh, well, I'm no expert. I always thought that the two string makes had flat bridges, the two strings being the older (as far as I know, again) I've not read that book, if I can find it i'll have to have a look. Cheers and thank you for correcting me.
Awesome! I was inspired to make one which is almost finished. I was wondering, are all three strings ever played all together? The bridge is curved yes?
The strings you have on it are they any particular type? Are they synthetic bow strings or real hair? My tagelharpa when I try to play, I can never get a good boy playing it always sounds ragged and screech like.
I just started playing this amazing instrument myself. But what is the name of the folk melody around 3:10? I've heard it used with different Finnish bands, but I can't figure out what the name of the tune is.

This is awesome. How do you use the left hand. It looks as though you are not touching the strings. Are you bending them with your hand? Thanks!
Teri West You just touch the strings.

Name of this song is "Ralli" ;)
I want that...
do you learn this instrument by notes or by listening?
you can use a chromatic tuner to know what nnote you´re playing
I and some others I have spoken to learned by listening and I don't know where online you would find notes for songs.
