I’ve been playing the oud and have been thinking about getting a Setar or a rewap, but recently I’ve been thinking about the Sanxian, due to its great cross-cultural potential, a point you made. Have fun with it!
Thanks for the comment Zhao, glad to hear you are into these things too! I have been away from my sanxian for a long time due to covid unfortunately. Managed to borrow an oud recently so I still have something to ding on.
Thanks for showing this, I've never heard of this instrument. Kind of wild how obscure it seems to be over there. Looks deceptively like it'd have a sharp learning curve. And it does sound unique, definitely more "bluegrassy." compared to the oud. Aesthetic points for that snakeskin.
Hi, I'd love to learn how to play the sanxian but I can't seem to find any books or good beginner videos for it. Can you recommend something? I found some sanshin (Okinawa version which seems just smaller) books can they be used as an substitute for learning?
The biggest difference is the picking style and that the skin on the sanxian is snake, on shamisen it's cat, dog, or synthetic. Both instruments have different variations from different regions used for different applications, so sometimes their shape, tuning, and style will overlap more or less... naturally they have different musical traditions too
there's a plucking sound that sounds percussive when you pick the strings, sounded very cool during the tibetan dance.
you never cease to amaze me, thanks Nassic

What is the difference between this and the Japanese Shamisen? (Other than box shape and how its typically plucked)
