I've probably rewatched this one a couple dozen times. This is the first samurai flick that actually made me cry. But unlike alot of samurai movies I'd watched growing up, it wasn't just a violent tragedy. There was alot of beauty and hope in the end.
Fascinating film. We start by seeing this old and gentle Hajime Saito only to learn through flashbacks that he is essentially a serial killer, yet we like him. In the same way Anton Chigurh chokes as the shopkeeper in "no country for old men" tells him he married into the business. The hound in GoT being a child killer but with too much pride to steal and so on. This code of honor serves as a great philosophical backdrop to what I feel is the crux of the story...the growth experienced by Hajime as he sees that honor is not only cold blooded strength but grace, humility and sacrifice through the examples led by Kanichiro.
One element of this movie I want to bring attention to is it's beautiful score by Joe Hisashi. Primarily known for his work on anime with the great Hayao Miyazaki (the John Williams to Miyazaki's Spielberg), his score perfectly compliments the film.
The "Nanbu" of the protagonist's hometown of this film is now called "Iwate Prefecture", and from there there have been baseball players who represent the Japan such as Shohei Otani and Rōki Sasaki.
@@bushidoblues9302 When I see Otani fighting by two way intensely in Angels of the team which it is only me, and I am small, and is weak, is it seen in the same way as Yoshimura whom it shoves in strong Satsuma, Choshu Allied Forces) with two swords?
I absolutely love this movie. I searched for a bluray release after watching it for the first time but there isn't an English friendly version available. So I just ordered the two disc special edition DVD instead. An instant classic.
One of my favorite films of all time. I bought this with the 2005 DVD release and I've been waiting for a rerelease ever since lol every few years I check back to see if there's a blu-ray or something and there never is.. totally lost in the ether... underknown and underappreciated film. Sad really...
Love this movie, possibly one of my favourite Samurai films. I'm always searching for Samurai movies I haven't seen, especially the more modern ones. Twilight Samurai, Hidden Blade, Love and Honor, Hari-Kiri and Samurai Fiction are also excellent 'modern' movies.
An interesting overlap here with the Rurouni Kenshin series of films is in the character of Hajime Saito. The real life Saito was a captain in the Shinsengunmi as depicted here and he did survive the groups destruction after the Meiji Restoration. Saito did become a cop afterwards as depicted in the Kenshin manga, anime, and love action films. So in a way you could see this film as a prequel to the Kenshin saga or the backstory of one of it's best characters.
@@bushidoblues9302 the character of Okita Soji, the deadly swordsman who dies from tuberculosis, was also mentioned in the Kenshin franchise. It makes sense since the Shinsengunmi were the enemies of Kenshin's clan during the Bakumatsu, that he would have interacted with some of them. The creator of Kenshin said the main character was loosely based on the real life figure Kawakami Gensai. Gensai was one of "Four Hitokiri of the Bakumatsu", four assassins who supported the restoration of the Emperor. Another one of the Hitokiri was Okada Izo who was featured in the movie HITOKIRI (TENCHU) that you just reviewed.
Points about this film 1. This film has more accurate battle clothing than the Last Samurai; where in Katsumoto's side, wears full medieval armor from Sengoku period, But this film, they just wear chainmail under their clothes. I can only see one guy who wear full armor into battle. 2. This film Samurais don't usually use gun, and use swords, but like the beginning of this clip, acknowledged superiority of Guns, and try to fight them with better tactics. 3. This film did really goes into philosophy of what it means to be Samurai, through main character, like Last Samurai. 4. This film battle scene is smaller than the Last Samurai, but still done well enough. Overall I think if this film is better than the last samurai, if it had the budget of the last Samurai, this film would be the best.
The thing is, the nationalists were pro emperor and anti shogunate. The Sonnō jōi faction. Sonnō jōi translates as "Honor the Emperor, banish the barbarians". Their members called themself Shishi. The Mori clan of the Choshu han attacked in 1863 several european ships at the street of Shimonoseki, which caused retaliation and the destruction of the choshu fleet and several of their strongholds through european powers. The pro shogunate faction fought these nationalists and lost during the choshu expedition of 1865.
I'm a new subscriber & really enjoy your content. I don't know if you've seen these but I have a few recommendations. First is a film called Incident At Blood Pass starring Toshiro Mifune as a version of his Yojimbo character. Tarantino's movie Hateful 8 borrowed alot from this film I believe. Next is a series called The Mute Samurai starring Tomisaburo Wakayama from Lone Wolf & Cub. It's 26 episodes. Finally I recommend an anime film called Dagger Of Kamui. All of these are cool samurai story's. If you haven't seen them I hope you check them out. Also as a Meiko Kaji fan , definitely check out Female Prisoner Scorpion and Blind Woman's Curse. Keep up the good work 👍😎
These are all new to me so I'm excited to check them out especially At Blood Pass because I enjoyed the hateful eight. I liked how it took place in an enclosed area.
why on earth would someone make a video about a video but not explain in detail said video? ? I finally got to watch this movie, this shit made me cry. This is The Best Samurai Movie Ever (imo).
