"Everyone remain here while I go look for a policeman," is comedy gold.
"We're all under arrest."
“I’m looking for a policeman to report a theft.”
“It’s no use Dr. Claw, Gadget’s caught up with us!”
...You know what, I can fully accept that the sentence "GADGET, I HAVE SNORTED A SUITCASE FULL OF COKE" was uttered at several production meetings.
Live action adaptations based on cartoons from the 2000's were a bizarre time.
Live-action adaptations in based on Saturday morning cartoons are indeed strange. Underdog, Yogi Bear, Inspector Gadget, George of the Jungle. You name it.
It really was but I kinda missed it, not gonna lie. Might be nostalgia speaking thou.
@@nicenameyougotthere.5021you didnt miss much really, same slop as disney but way less expensive.
The best ones were the scooby doo movies.
Speed Racer anyone
@WaksWorld05
That was awesome. But then again, I have a huge crush on Christina Ricci...
I love how Inspector Gadget 2 is basically the same plot of Robocop 2, it’s just funny how they line up. I really liked this movie as a kid, since it felt more like the source material
Even the first movie is similar to RoboCop 1 with a cop dying but is brought to life as a robot to protect the crime before he stumbles into the case involving the main villain responsible for turning him into a machine.
Makes me wonder if there was an Inspector Gadget 3, the plot would've been the same as RoboCop 3. 😅
@@brandonspain12345 I couldn't stop laughing watching Murphy's death in that robocop reboot in cinema, because I instantly remembered that it's how the guy in the gadget movie died.
I knew I couldnt be the only one who saw these movies as g-rated robocop.
So, the Inspector Gadget film, that is based on the tv show made in 1983, took a page from the RoboCop film that was made in 1987?
@@WildDancer101yes
I think the wildest thing about the entire Inspector Gadget franchise is that it's sort of a spin off of Lupin III. Way I heard it, DIC wanted to do a Lupin VII series set in the future, and there was going to be a cybernetic Zenigata to chase Lupin's descendent. That show was scrapped, but they kept cyber-Zenigata and made Gadget.
That's awesome. While watching this review my mind kept jumping to castle of cagliostro. Def feels like it has a similar tone to Lupin.
For real??? I knew about Lupin VII, but never heard of this before!
Thats so funny because I specifically found myself seeing the old show clips and thought "y'know this sort of reminds me of Lupin-"
Inspector Gadget works because it strikes the perfect balance of taking itself seriously while also being a wonderfully comedic farce. It's too easy to swing one way or the other when writing. People lean into extremes, making a complete joke that has such little substance there's nothing to care about, or something so deep and serious that there's no room for joy and optimism to fit in. The contrast of confidence and (in)competance in the good inspector make for something genuinely endearing, in both the cartoon and it's star.
Spot on
Not gonna lie, you convinced me. Inspector Gadget 2 actually looks pretty good. At the very least, it serves as a simple, yet textbook example about how having more confidence in an IP's inherent values, instead of wasting time justifying itself, leads to a much stronger and more enjoyable film.
I think it's useful for films like this to exist. Sometimes it's nice to go back to something that has everything laid out simply and effectively to remind you it's possible to make an enjoyable, engaging story at any level for any audience- teaching us to walk before we can run.
also it make me hehe haha
That's always been Hollywood weakness. They just assume people aren't going to accept yellow spandex on Wolverine. When in reality humans just want the work to believe in itself and we will follow.
Just the way French Stewart says “Ma’am” is funnier than the entire performance for the first film.
“MA’AM”
Inspector Gadget 2 and Home Alone 4 are the "wait, why is he played by French Stewart" duology
Yeah I didn't care for French Stewart playing gadget back then, but I didn't pay much attention to the movie. I really should have, though.
when the role calls for a thin white guy who's a little weird looking and the original guy is a bit too famous now, French Stewart is the go to guy
That reminds me that for some reason I always think that Steve Buscemi is in Clockstoppers, but it turns out it's French Stewart 🤨
Because he's massively underrated
@@bewilde_Core memory unlocked
As a child I ALWAYS thought the 2nd was better, even though I had never seen the original show. It always felt so much funnier and sillier than the first (plus the robot Inspector creeped me out and overuse of feet was gross to me). I always asked to rewatch it at my grandparents house. I felt the exact same about it as I did with Scooby Doo 2, and I'm so happy you brought that comparison up. My childhood feels validated now
Fun fact: a good chunk of the first season of the Inspector Gadget cartoon was animated by the anime studio TMS. Sunrise and Toei also has a hand in some episodes as well.
So that's why it looked so much like Lupin III in parts.
@@chrisossu2070 These companies also did work for G1 transformers, The Littles, Muppet Babies, the classic DuckTales and Batman The animated series. TMS Entertainment specifically are the animation studio behind the Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker movie

My deduction skills as a detective tell me he has quite possibly never had sex
Never thought I wind up watching a movie review about a direct-to-DVD sequel to Disney's Inspector Gadget.
The most criminal thing about these movies is that they didn't give Matthew Broderick or French Stewart the same haircut as Inspector Gadget
Not the most criminal thing Matthew Broderick has done though (which was kill a man with his car in Ireland in 1987)
There's a lot of criminal things the movie didn't do that wasn't in the show, but this is definitely the biggest. 😅
The amount G2 reminds me of Pixie Paris or Alex Gaudino should be criminal.
And it will be if the buck won't stop somewhere.
It would not have been satisfactory unless it were subtle. He was right that they played it too safe with the Dick Tracy look.
@@sboinkthelegday3892 Definitely awakening something there
FINALLY, someone who appreciates Inspector Gadget 2. You really hit the nail on the proverbial head as to why I like it: It's a film that truly captures the source material while doing something new with it. Also the same reason I love the live-action Rocky and Bullwinkle film from the year 2000.
Look, I know they're not perfect, but they are accurate and transformative. That's all I need.
Live action Rocky and Bullwinkle was a perfect adaptation of what the show was. Witty puns and self aware humor vs a dastardly plot, with with just barely enough animation to qualify as visual entertainment.
I aint gonna lie, the "His goose is cooked? More like, _deep fried and _*_burnt to a crisp!"_* line is still one I use on frightening regularity.
holy shit that dvd is is PROPER stacked. i'd love to have that for so many movies. bless french stewart for acting his squinty alien heart out
Bmask displaying herculean restraint by not spamming the "brown bricks" soundbite more than twice in this video.
Had to sedate myself tbh
@@BMask Inspector Gadget the original cartoon from the 80s actually had a soundtrack LP later CD in 1995 made in Australia which is not an easy find but I have it! And some trivia for you in regards to the cartoon. In the original pilot Gadget had a mustache but it was removed due to him looking too similar to Inspector Clouseau. Also Inspector Gadget was orignally voiced by Gary Owens and Jesse White and yes Frank Welker before finally settling for Don Adams for the series. Also in the original pilot Brain and Gadgets roles were reversed. Meaning Gadget was smart and had more wits and Brain was the one messing things up LOL! This would change after the pilot. Penny was voiced by Mona M. Lanotti and would be replaced by Cree Summer for season 1. 🕵🔍🐕👱♀📕
never in my entire childhood did i ever think somebody would one day make a video essay about my favorite movie
I just knew my specific fixation on this movie over the first would be validated someday.
For real, my autistic brain has repeated that "Stake out, not at the stake out" line numerous times in my life and I carry no shame. XD
Mark Mitchell as the chief?! As an Australian I am having violent flashbacks to some formative TV shows.
HAVE YOU EVER
EVER FELT LIKE THIS?
@@BMask And somehow Round The Twist was only the *second*-weirdest Australian show in the 90s with Mark Mitchell as the recurring villain. Lift-Off was surreal.
Hello Gentlemen how are you today?
I can appreciate Gadget 1 for how relentlessly bizarre the whole thing is, but even as a kid I recognized Gadget 2 as a better film. I certainly remember watching G2 more often, though that may be because it actually aired on cable more.
Still, your criticisms are on point, and it's tragic how little Hollywood learned since Gardet 1.
When the music from the sequel finally played you punched my nostalgia right in its nostalgia.
I also grew up with the original cartoon and after seeing the first movie I was like: "Why did they cast Matthew Broderick? Wouldn't the guy from 3rd Rock from the Sun be a much better fit? And why did they show us who Dr. Claw was?" When I found out that there was a sequel I was delighted that had indeed cast French Stewart for the role. All these years I thought I was the only one who appreciated the sequel more than the original movie, mostly because the sequel is so unknown over here...
"WHO PUT THAT THERE?!" is a thing I still quote despite losing my VHS copy like 15 yrs ago.
mine is "More like _deep fried and _*_burnt to a crisp!"_*
I have never seen a UA-cam channel with a more bizarre mix of entertainment analysis than yours.
I love it and it's awesome.
Thank you for rewriting my inner thoughts for the next week and a half to be 'Brown bricks, in mine crap"
I'm partly convinced that IG2 started as a Gadgetinis movie before they realized it couldn't be achieved on a DTV budget due to things like Quimby's personality (he reminds me of Nozzaire) and G2 being a fully robotic successor to Gadget that doesn't need voice commands
Gadget's more based on Inspector Zenigata than anything since the series was a retooled Lupin the 3rd spin off.
It's in the mix, but one look at moustache gadget- from a french studio no less- let's you know it's Clouseau above all
Never seen the first Inspector Gadget. Apparently for good reason.
But Inspector Gadget 2? Now that one I used to watch on repeat.
Fun fact: Inspector Gadget was originally to be a Lupin III spin off taking place in the future, where IG was a cyborg Inspector Zenigata.
I think "Police Squad" captured all the hard-boiled goofball energy they needed to put into this series.
It’s Robocop…for kids!!!
I will admit that I liked Inspector Gadget 2 more than the first movie. Despite being a direct-to-video Disney film (Yeah, I was equally surprised), the sequel explained why Inspector Gadget kept making mistakes. He was the first version, with lots of defects that messed up his programming so that he would almost always get the wrong gadget whenever he needed something to fight crime.
It’s crazy how nobody has mentioned how the second inspector gadget movie feels like an Ernest movie, down to the impression, style of comedy, etc. I wouldn’t be surprised if the sequel was made with Jim Varney in mind
Varney's come up a few times in the comments and as an Ernest fan myself, I'm surprised I didn't think to comment on it. Maybe I should save that for a possible discussion of the great man himself.
@@BMask Honestly since I hadn't thought about it for a second I was just thinking "Wait, was Ernest played by someone named French Stewart?". And it took until this comment to remind me that that's NOT Jim Varney.
I loved the Original cartoon lol. But I always wondered why Dr. Klaww never just nuked Gadgets house lol considering he seems to be able to afford a vehicle that could be a car, undersea vehicle and fighter jet. The fact he would sometimes pan his video camera over his house lol.
A 30-minute video about an Inspector Gadget sequel!? EXACTLY the kind of high-quality niche work I expect from you, God be with you, B-Mask!
Fun fact, Dr. Claw is what Soundwave sounds like without the voice modulator.
Gadget and the Gadgetinis is a comfort show for me. It's nice to see it mentioned at all. I'm pretty sure most people don't even know it exists
I think the most frustrating part about it how good this film is that they actually made the BEST modern version of the inspector gadget theme song… but not only did they not use it for the film, but they split it up into 2 parts. One part of it was used for the teaser trailer they made for the film, and the second was for only the dvd menu itself. People have managed to create fanmade full versions of the song by stitching the audio clips together but the songs ending isn’t fully done… so it’s a huge shame that objectively the best version of the inspector gadget theme song will never be fully complete.😭
This was one of the DVDs that was on the TV once a week as a kid growing up, but I never watched the first movie until I realized I needed to know if the childhood memory was reliable. Watched 1 and 2 with a good friend back-to-back. The first one is honest-to-god torture, and the second is just as good now as it was back then. A real joy. I'm thrilled it's getting talked about here.
The first film always felt like it was trying to be a kid friendly parody of Robocop more than trying to either do it's own thing nor recreate the vibe of the original show.
You gotta remember that when Gadget 1 came out, most of us were unaware of the original cartoon and simply became attached to Broderick's rendition of the character, so it makes sense why the second film wasn't received as well due to how different it was to the first one.
I think this is a very centralised sense of revisionism. When the first movie came out, it was ripped apart by critics and written off by quite a lot of older kids who'd grown up on the cartoon. The second was badly received not in any way, shape or form by an audience who wanted something more like the original movie- the changes got their praise, it was just seen as another crappy cash grab on home video. As stated, I feel it at least makes an attempt to be a little more than that- enough to elevate it from just a cash grab to a statement from someone who wanted to prove the original show's content was worth putting out there properly- but it was in no way hampered by anyone's 'devotion' to a movie that landed like a thud in 1999.
Please enjoy the og movie if you do, sure, but don't try to gaslight me into thinking that first film built a massive majority of fans that caused G2's hampered reception. Hundreds of comments here stating the opposite, and letterboxd/RT score and IDMB scores don't remember the first film that way, either.
@@BMaskah, just like Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory.
Despite that movie only taking bare footnotes from the original book, its held in higher regard by its own fans (and by the entertainment genre as a whole with multiple parodies and specials based on that film) compared to the 2005 film with Johnny Depp which is more accurate to the book and was more favored by critics but audiences didn't like it as much because the 70's film is that ingrained in their minds.
French Stewart is an underrated performer. I saw him in this play called "Watson". He played a hilarious Sherlock Holmes.
Very lucky!! I remember seeing ads for it online many years back, wish I'd seen it myself!

1. agreed. I like what they did with the Casper character, rather than the one-note gag of the cartoons.
2. I don't know anyone who even saw it.
You can do something cool and interesting with Casper without being a very confused take on exploring the characters psyche within the most static narrative thrust possible. That 'one-note gag' produced a character people responded to and endured long enough to even be considered worthy of a film, and with good reason.
love a funny doodoo moment
I forgot almost all about this movie until the very last frame with the "You're going to have to grease my paw" bit, made me lose it.

I'd say the first and second film have their merits for sure.
The funniest part personally is that most of the second movie were filmed near where I live in Australia haha
So it was quite an experience pointing out every 20 minutes "Hey, I know there this is!" and also the usage of some Aussie stars too.
These films are such a fever dream to me, but I'll give them props for being my introduction to the franchise.

My pleasure- this for all of us who felt the same!
I remember watching this film randomly on holiday when I was pretty young. The bubblegum truck scene at the end stuck with me for years.
After Doug did his NC review of the first it reignited my curiosity about this movie. I remember re-watching it and feeling it was much more faithful to the original show, plus a fun movie in general!
I was just thinking about this film today!
Your uploads are always a treat to see in my notifs. Can't wait to sit down and watch this during dinner!
Fun fact: Sigrid Thornton, the actress who played the mayor in the sequel, did actually go on to play Judy Garland in the miniseries Peter Allen: Not The Boy Next Door. Wouldn't be surprised if the producers saw IG2 and thought "That's our Judy!"
Absolutely love that this happened- and perfectly understandable why, too!
This was a wonderful revisit on a title I have not thought of in a long time. I dressed up as inspector gadget 5 years running as a kid, in a big overcoat stuffed with all of the "tools" I had in my house (brooms, screwdrivers, silly spray, etc). He is my hero in an odd way. It is what pushed me into electrical engineering, and why I continue to work in tech. Gonna re-watch this one tonight.
I think this channel is so consistently entertaining as it covers such a variety of topics for the same reason this movie worked- love for the material.
The passion cannot be faked and it is infectious. You’re a gem, B-Mask
I really love your videos, always excited when a new one comes out. Such a great sense of humor mixed with perfect references mixed with good insight.
As a kid, I picked up Inspector Gadget 1 from Blockbuster after enjoying the cartoons I'd catch every now and again on TV before school. Even as a kid, I didn't fully like the weird turn it took, the odd jokes...
Imagine my surprise a few years later to find a sequel when going through Blockbuster. And I really enjoyed it! I liked the tons of extras on the DVD, and watched it every day till we returned it. I have not seen nor thought about that movie since.
Excellent video, really like your thoughts on the two.
I watched this movie on repeat as a kid. I never watched the original cartoon, i never even saw the first live action film. But this film was in the bargain bin and became a go-to film. I thought i was the only one who even knew existed. Great analysis!

The end credits song still gets stuck in my head too.
All of your videos are so fun and enthusiastic. Love positive criticism and your channel is one of the best on UA-cam for it!
The Inspector Gadget theme is so iconic and i never get tired of hearing it
Wonderful review. As someone who watched the cartoon growing up but never looked at the movies, I didn't even know there was a second one, let alone a good adaptation. Also appreciate the surprise Hudsucker Proxy drop!
This movie has such a cheesy charm that it's not ironically one of my favorites.
And YES! I also thought that this Claw scene (09:37) had Raimi's vibes.
Personally, I actually like the first Inspector Gadget movie. Yes, it definitely wasn't a good adaptation of the Inspector Gadget cartoon, and the second movie was definitely better, but I still like watching it.
Speaking of Disney's version of Inspector Gadget, I would love to see Disney's version of Gadget and the other characters come back in modern media in some way. Like maybe for an "As Told by Disney Emojis" short or an appearance in modern Disney games, like Disney Emoji Blitz or Disney Heroes: Battle Mode. Disney has the rights to those versions of the characters, so why not?
I had a feeling you were gonna bring up some of Doug's reviews on Inspector Gadget and im glad. I love those reviews.
17:45-I think that Dr. Claw is some woman named Regina Claw whose been trying to kill Inspector Gadget because she’s secretly in love with him.
Saw this video title and thought "oh yeah there was 2 of those....what was the first one about again?"
Couldnt have told you a thing about it until I started watching your video
The amount of repressed memories of this film that this video unlocked for me is... staggering. I had forgotten just how much I had watched this film when I was a wee shit. Genuinely unironically good. Then again, this is also coming from someone who enjoyed the _The Cat in The Hat_ live action film starring Mike Myers, ("You're... fiiiirrrreeeedddddd-da!") so what do I know?
Also I laughed really hard at the Scooby 2 fart bit you included and I don't know what that says about me.

Oh, you never fail to release a beautiful video on a subject I'm weirdly interested in, while also including heartbreaking examples of things done poorly. (I love Rogue One and the Casper movie. 😢)
8:20 That’s a pretty cool fan made poster. Too bad there isn’t a real Megamind 2 to satisfy my thirst.
I remember not caring for either of the films as a child, but the one thing I do remember enjoying was the joke in the second film where the Inspector goes undercover at the bar and, in order to convince them he's a tough guy who fits in there, orders a glass of milk-chocolate milk. That got me and still makes me smile years later, admittedly.
I'm so glad you created this because I've always loved part 2 since it's way more like the cartoon.
Inspector gadget 2 is more like the show then the terrible movie
And still horrible
Oh man talk about a blast from the past. I’ve always had a soft spot for the Gadget movies, the first because it’s actually filmed in downtown Pittsburgh and every time I got to eat near there I say “Hey, that’s where Claw’s hideout is!”(and also because it still has to this day the best Happy Meal toy). The second I had on DVD and would watch it constantly due to all the special features and games on it.

Man. Inspector Gadget (the Netflix cartoon show) was my first fandom. It's what introduced me to the internet. Truly a wonderous thing, and it will always have a special place in my heart.
Bloody kids
Haven't thought about this film in years, but I did watch it several times as a kid-may have even watched those special features. I remember my mother liking this one significantly more than the first because this film was close to the cartoons and she watched those when she was younger. I've had that floating in the back of my head since that moment, but buried super deeply and just kinda assumed that no one else was of that opinion.
Now I'm tempted to rewatch it. The bar scene where he orders milk (then chocolate milk) has lived in my head since this movie more that the movie itself has-I always think of it whenever someone orders something at a tough guy bar. Good video.
