TWO* of Charles Leon’s sons died in WW1. So two of Napoleon’s direct grandchildren were killed fighting for France in the First World War. We got this information from his daughter who said that one of HER sons died in WW1 as well. So that’s two direct grandsons and 1 great grandson of Napoleon’s claimed by the Great War.

Napoleon's oldest brother Joseph, the former King of Naples and Spain, headed to the United States and built a very impressive mansion called Point Breeze which overlooked the Delaware River in Bordentown, NJ. There were descendents living in and around the area until 1967. I found this amazing as I live 25 mins away and used to work there. Great General is certainly questionable. In some regards, yes. In others, not so much.
His failed Alexandria campaign, for example, was not one of his brighter moments and in most regards was purely a matter of personal achievement rather than strategic.
His actions throughout Europe, however, caused untold amounts of human misery through unnecessary death, disease and SA. While brilliant in some regards, the man would be tried today as a War Criminal.

What humiliation are you talking about? Should the victorious Germans in 1871, in a war declared by the French, ask their vanquished enemies for permission to use the ancient palace of the former kings of the Bourbon dynasty? A dynasty, by the way, that the French people had tried to eradicate eighty years earlier.

@@thkempe The Prussians incited the war on purpose because Bismarck needed a war. The Ems Dispatch was edited to create a furor. It was hardly the French trying to destroy Prussia. The irony is that Napoleon III didn't want the war. He was a very sick man at that point. And perhaps it is a pity that Prussia won and unified Germany under their militaristic ethos. A United Germany would have been better off under the Wittelsbachs or even the Hapsburgs. The Empire might have lasted longer.

Makes me wonder if Napoleon III knew that Walewski was his cousin. Seems like an incredible coincidence, and "my uncle's old girlfriend's son" doesn't seem like a connection that would open doors to government positions.

I would just say that as an early youth having read so many biographies of Napoleon and happening to have many of his physical habits and characteristics, I did strenuous research on any other descendants of Napoleon Bonaparte admiring but seeing a dead end in the fate of the illustrious, tragically noble Prince of Rome. Though I found family lines and such; at the time I was unable to find anything. I really appreciate this information. Thank you. That's all.

Wow this video came at the right time because I was just watching a documentary on Napoleon the other day and I didn't know he had any outside kids until they mentioned it, and my first thought was wow I wonder happened to those kids now I know thanks for the video.

Just in case you don't know, count Walewski had a daughter that died at a very young age, I think four years old, while serving at Buenos Aires, and she's buried at Cementerio de la Recoleta.

Fun fact : Alexandre Walewski had only one son (despite being married twice) and this son was also illegitimate since Alexandre had him with his mistress, the actress Rachel Félix (the son was legitimated by Alexandre).
Rachel also had a child with Arthur Bertrand, son of the Grand Marshal Bertrand. Arthur was born in Saint-Helena during Napoléon's exile...
André Walewski, Napoléon's great grandson, founded the taxis company G7 which still exists.
It was his taxis which were used in 1914 to transport the French reinforcement who stopped the German offensive at the first battle of the Marne.
After that, André enlisted as an officer, was wounded and won several decorations.

Thanks for this. Had no idea G7 was created by a Walewski and descendent of Napoleon. Use them fairly frequently. Very cool.
