  • This is a quick video on how to do a muffler modification to an Echo CS-400 Chainsaw.
    This in conjunction with the carb adjustment mod allows a big increase in overall performance.
    Make sure you have done the carburetor mod prior to doing the exhaust mod. If you have not yet done the carb mod, I have a step by step "how to" video in my uploads.
    Please note, modifications to pretty much any engine or emissions regulated device on pretty much anything in American will most likely void or affect your warranty. If you are worried about warranty coverage, you can always buy another exhaust off eBay (running about 18$) and mod that, allowing you to swap back and forth.
    Cheers

    Great Vids! I did both mods on my cs400 runs like awesome, however when I put the cover back on the throttle is way too high and no amount of throttling down the L&H screws works...took the cover back off and tuned the carb screws and it runs awesome. WTF? you ever had this happen? I I noticed that if I push down on the throttle assembly with the cover off it revs the engine. I think the cover is doing this...idk what's going on...saw was fine prior and like I said it sounds and runs BETTER post mods. But I would like to put the cover back on...
    any help?

      Thats weird and no, I have not had that happen. And I don't mean to question your work... but when I turn my screws in I can turn them in enough to completely kill the engine or likewise out enough to flood it. No cover should affect the throttle. Are you sure something is not snagging that throttle cable when you tighten the cover down?

    Thought I would post a quick update to the muffler and carb mod here.I have now been running this saw modded for over 3 years, It has cleared 2 wooded properties and dozens and dozens of trees at a time when clearing.I have not had to make one replacement on this (excluding for chains gas and oil) I am literally running the same stock bar without issues. I have both my home sites cleared now, and only use it for casual cutting now (a couple trees a season) but this thing is still running like a top. Very happy with it and definitely recommend it for the price and size. A couple things, I maintain fluids, I uses wedges so I never pinch bars when cutting, I clean it before putting it away .. and I stay the hell away from dirt. As far as usage, I usually get around 3 sharpening out of each chain, and it has been through about 7 or 8 of them. Again, this thing has long outlasted what I was expecting for a home owner type saw.

      CinKo Del what chains do you like to use for your Echo? I’ve been running Oregon S62, but they dull out so quick. Any ideas?

      Honestly thats the same chains im running.... and yes they do go quick. But home depot sells them for a good price in a two pack so I haven't really I haven't really ever look for another option. If you find something better report back and let me know

    Just seeing these mods. I have to check out the carb mod. I just bought a brand new cs400 from Home Depot. I have been using a husky 240 that got bashed against a brick wall 10 times last night. Done with that pos. Just picked up the cs400 and to tell you the truth not impressed with it at all compared to the 240. Just didn’t seem like it had any balls against a 12in tree I have been cutting rounds out of. Not sure if it’s the break in period but it get getting stuck in the wood. My 240 didn’t even get stuck. Going to check out your mods now. Thanks for the vids

    Always best to leave screen in the small engine mufflers due to small sparks that can ignite dry grass. Certain conditions this can happen.
    I would leave some of the cat inside too for some backpressure as it is needed for low-end power but make sure to not leave chips or loose material inside muffler.
    This can get sucked into the cylinder and scar walls shortening life. Thanks

    What you're referring to as baffling is actually catalytic converter. As long as you put the spark arrester back on it should still be forest legal.

    I have this saw’s little brother, the CS370. I pulled the limiter caps off the carb last year to richen it up a little. But I still have to drill the cat out of the muffler. It’s a pretty good little saw as it is, but I know there’s more in there waiting to be unleashed.

      Its really is a great saw, and you will be glad once you do drill that cat out, its immediately noticeable, and Thanks for watching!

    I was told to completely remove all the baffling/catalytic converter inside which I did and it does run better and its definitely louder. But after removing all the baffling inside, Im wondering what the muffler even does now as its just basically free access for the exhaust...why wouldn't I just remove the muffler all together so the motor has zero restriction for the exhaust?

    • @CinKoDel
      @CinKoDel  7 років тому +3

      Even though the muffler is empty, I would still keep it on as it directs the heat from the exhaust and also keeps stuff (wood chips, dirt, etc) from getting into the exahust port.
      With it empty there is almost no restriction anyways... which you can test by running the saw with it removed, and then again with it on (and empty) just make sure you widen out the exit a bit more as i did and you should be good.
      Take care!

    Does this void the warranty?

    • @CinKoDel
      @CinKoDel  6 років тому +4

      It may, however you can always purchase an extra muffler off ebay and swap it if need be, they are only a few bucks. May not be the most ethical way... that's up to you though.

    • @buddymorrissey
      @buddymorrissey 5 років тому +2

      I wouldn't worry about the ethics on this one, @@CinKoDel. I'm looking at this saw to do some cleanup this winter of junk trees on my property. There are many negative reviews relating to engine seizures and scored cylinders/pistons that Echo blames on users. They flat out won't honor warranty, and it sure sounds like it's due to lean running- probably government-required. Once again the little guy trapped between the manufacturer and Leviathan. Your exhaust/carb mods would, I suspect be an overall win.

    Is this muffler mod necessary for this chainsaw ?

    • @CinKoDel
      @CinKoDel  8 років тому +3

      Well if you want the most out of your chainsaw then yes. However if you are just using your chainsaw for the typical usage and loading this size chainsaw is designed for then, no.Likewise,If you are you the type of guy that removes the cat off your sports cars, and takes it from the headers straight out..then yes this is necessary.IF you keep your cars stock and happy that way, then no this is not necessary

      No, hack job. More noise is about it.

    • @CinKoDel
      @CinKoDel  4 роки тому +7

      Hack job? Possibly.
      More noise? Yes.
      But does it in fact add more power to the Chain? Yes... and its a very noticable improvement.

    You really don't have to put both feet on that little saw to start it. it starts right up with just a slight pull.

    • @CinKoDel
      @CinKoDel  8 років тому +12

      +B Hamby Correct, but I was holding a camera in my hand. So if I didn't put my feet on it would have pulled it up into me, since I don't want a running chainsaw in my side... I put my feet on it.

  • @rifflicks
    @rifflicks 5 років тому

    Why....are you yanking the starter pull cord so hard? ....It has an I30 starter.....you can pull the cord as slow as you can and it will still start.

    You can break out the catalyst but its virtually impossible to drill. Hammer it out with a old chisel and blow out the pieces.

    • @CinKoDel
      @CinKoDel  7 років тому +2

      Titanium drill bits and any power drill should through smooth and easy.... though hammer and chisel maybe more rewarding... as smashing through stuff you dont want usually is...=)

      @buddymorrissey 5 років тому

      @Cyclone Bravo -Agreed. I'm not sure of the part cost, but I'd buy a service part and mod that first. EDIT: I just checked eBay- at $50 for a muffler on a $300 saw, maybe I'll just open the OEM one first.

    The chain is to tight.

    • @CinKoDel
      @CinKoDel  7 років тому +6

      Everyone has there own preferences I am sure, but no it is not to tight by any general means. The chain has slack in it, but not enough it will come out of the guides. I keep my chains with about a 1/4" to 3/8" gap when pulled for slack. the leaves enough slack that it is not complete taunt in the guides, but not to much that it will come out when running. If you like more slack that's fine, but that is your preference.
