India likely to have binary grading system for higher education: NAAC Director

- India is likely to be among very few countries in the world that are considering to introduce a binary grading system. However, this system will be customised to suit the Indian Higher education sector's needs owing to its complexity and scale, which makes it challenging to meet extremely stringent international accreditation benchmarks.
Prof. Ganesan Kannabiran, Director, National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC), has said that India is likely to introduce a "Provisional Accreditation" or "Accreditation Awaited" status for universities. Citing an example, he said if a higher education institution needs to score 50 marks to get accreditation but it scores close to 47 or 48, then that institution could get "Accreditation Awaited" status.
Secondly, all the institutions seeking accreditation cannot be put in a single basket, therefore, India is going to introduce a maturity based-accreditation system. "It will have levels 1-5, very similar to CMM (Capability Maturity Model) levels, under which an institution needs to fulfill certain requirements to move up a level. Under this new system, institutions like Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, IIT Madras or IIT Bombay, could be considered Level-5 institutions," said the NAAC Director in his address at the recently organised ET Education InspirED Summit in Bengaluru.
