    Confederation: The Realistic Two-State Solution
More and more, one hears that the two-state solution is no longer a plausible way to resolve the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. But what if the problem has always been the simplified way two states have been envisioned? Can a confederal approach yet redeem the two-state solution?
The Dickey Center will host a rare event: a discussion of confederation among three leading experts-Yossi Beilin, the former Israeli Deputy Foreign Minister and architect of the Oslo Accords; Omar Dajani, who was on the Palestine Liberation Organization's Negotiations Support Unit; and Lara Friedman, President of the Foundation for Middle East Peace.
    Recorded October 24, 2022
Sponsored by The John Sloan Dickey Center for International Understanding, The Tucker Center for a Spiritual and Ethical Life, and made possible by a gift from Marina and Andrew Lewin ’81
Yosef Beilin is an Israeli politician who has served in multiple ministerial and leadership positions in the Israeli government. Including: Minister of Economics and Planning (1995); Minister in the Prime Minister's Office (1995-1996); Minister of Justice (1999-2001); Minister of Religious Affairs (2000-2001).
A significant figure in the 1990s Israeli-Palestinian peace process. Serving as Deputy Foreign Minister, Beilin participated in negotiations that led to the Oslo Accords.
Omar Dajani is recognized as a leading expert on legal aspects of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict. Professor of Law and Co-Director of the McGeorge Global Center for Business and Development, University of the Pacific.
Former member of the office of the United Nations Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process (UNSCO), where he worked on peacebuilding initiatives and played a lead role in marshaling and organizing international efforts to support Palestinian legal and political reforms.
Lara Friedman is the President of the Foundation for Middle East Peace (FMEP) and a non-resident fellow at the U.S./Middle East Project (USMEP). With more than 25 years working in the Middle East foreign policy arena and a former U.S. Foreign Service Officer, serving in Jerusalem, Washington, Tunis and Beirut, Lara is a leading authority on U.S. foreign policy in the Middle East, with particular expertise on Israel/Palestine.

Hamas isn't in the west bank. Why didn't Israel use the west bank as something akin to a pilot project towards Palestinian statehood instead of illegal settlements, destruction of lands and properties, killings, stateless, lack of basic civil and civic rights etc etc?

The suggested Arab Peace Initiative 2002 is a joke because it calls for implementation of U.N. 242, which calls for secure borders, but the Initiative calls for the Right of Return and 49' armistice lines as borders.

Palestinians systematically killed & terrorized by Israeli military: the West is outraged…by Russia in Ukraine. It is not just the selectivity; it is the fact that this selectivity underscores a racial hierarchy of Western empathy that discounts humanity of non-Western people.

the Saudis import multi-millions of foreign workers (who have no citizen rights) every year and they like building big things, how about converting the arid interior of the peninsula into a Botswana like enclave for all the Gazans and West Bankers that need a new 'safe' home? They can take the place of all the southeast Asian workers and develop their culture in peace? Won't cost the Saudis anything extra, so cheap to implement?

About 850,000 Jews were expelled and ethnically cleansed from Arab lands in 1948, too, and they can never get their land and jewelry and olive trees, etc., back. That's life. Jews can not get their houses back in Poland or Germany, either. Tough turkey.

Twenty minutes in and there is no explanation of what is meant by "Confederation." Ultimately, Jordan is Arab Palestine; Israel is Jewish Palestine. This is the answer. Palestinians will have Jordanian citizenship and may remain in Israel as Foreign Residents.

Israel is a Jewish state and recognised by whole free world. You think you are being clever to say all Palestinians Arabs should return back to Israel. There is no right at all. Except maybe a small number if ISREAL agrees as a nominal good will gesture - otherwise Palestinians should not demand a right that no longer exists - go to the 22 Arabs states or Gaza where they built a terrorist state or in WB where the PA pays terrorists to kill Jews

The United States should end military aid to Israel...
    1. Israel can pay for its own military. Israel has a strong economy, an excellent international credit rating, and runs frequent budget surplus. Israel ran an annual surplus of more than a billion dollars six out of the last ten years.
    2. Military aid to Israel is a security risk. Israel is a major supplier of military technology to China. These sales have been instrumental in the modernization of the Chinese military. Israel developed the Lavi fighter from American technology with 1.5 billion in American subsidies. Israel sold the Lavi fighter to China. It is now called the J-10 and is the mainstay of the Chinese Air Force. Israel has also sold China missile guidance systems,, advanced radar systems and targeting systems.
    3. Israel is a diplomatic liability.
    4. Military aid to Israel is illegal under the Leahy Law because of Israel's human rights violations. Any aid to Israel is illegal under the Symington amendment which prohibits aid to nations with nuclear weapons that have not signed the nuclear non-proliferation treaty and do not permit inspections of their nuclear sites,,,
