- The Norfolk and Western Railway commonly called the N&W, was a US class I railroad, formed by more than 200 railroad mergers between 1838 and 1982. It was headquartered in Roanoke, Virginia, for most of its existence. Its motto was "Precision Transportation"; it had a variety of nicknames, including "King Coal" and "British Railway of America". In 1986, N&W merged with Southern Railway to form today's Norfolk Southern Railway. This film shows a variety of equipment used by the N&W. Some included are the J class 4-8-4 locomotives and M class 5-8-0 locomotives. This film was most likely shot between 1955 and 1957. Transferred from 100 feet of regular 8mm film.
Wow fantastic footage
Great archival footage. Thankless for posting. Notice those open gondolas and all the people getting doused in cinders!
Where did those upstart diesels come from? 🙂
I love the N&W❤ the M Class, J Class & Y Class locomotives are at their best here! ❤❤❤❤❤
I can’t agree more, thanks so much for watching.
