ROMPIN’ RONNIE HAWKINS, … “IN SESSION” with his band, his son, and his former backup girl singers …

- Another entry from my “favorite things collection”, this is Ronnie Hawkins at his ribald best. IN SESSION was a series produced at CHCH TELEVISION in Hamilton, Ontario back in the late ‘80’s. I happened to be channel surfing and caught most of the good old rock and roll embodied in this too short clip.
Ronnie Hawkins is a Canadian icon today … although he is a native son of Arkansas. He’s also a contemporary of ELVIS (Presley, not Costello), Carl Perkins, Jerry Lee Lewis … and all of those guys who came through Sun Records studios in the good ‘ol days when rock was real.
Somehow, he made his way to the Toronto area, got steady work here and stayed, … eventually marrying a Canadian and putting together bands of (principally) Canadian musicians … who told everyone they were from various parts of the U.S., … because Canadians didn’t believe we had guys who could be as good as they became. David Foster started out with the Hawk, most, if not all of that BAND that backed Bob Dylan ( Robbie Robertson, Levon Helm) were once sidemen in the Hawks, Ronnie’s band.
I learned in this show that Beverly D’Angelo was once a backup singer with Ronnie Hawkins.
The complete story about Ronnie Hawkins’ career and how he started the careers of quite a few Canadians is out there and worth reading about. In the meantime, enjoy .

Ronnie always had AMAZING Musicians playing with him.RIP LEGEND!!
That Bird has flown... R.I.P. Ronnie Hawkins, thanks for all the good times.
Thanks for the comment. I agree. Unfortunately, that's pretty much the end of the trail for this good old rock & southern blues. There are imitators today, ... but they don't have the soul or feel for the music, and we are all the worse off for that.
Thank you Willie Nelson for giving the world one of the best songs ever. “Crazy”
I'll second that, sir. While we're at it, ... let's give Country the respect it deserves, ... for all the country singers, writers and pickers that have contributed so much to the music we have all appreciated over the years.
Now that’s rock n roll
Absolutely! Your taste in music is impeccable.
Stan's rockin that piano! R.I.P. brother
Love this guy. His dedication to his music and anyone else who shared his love of it is an influence that goes beyond being measured. He was always just a regular guy with a great attitude toward anyone he met or anyone he worked with. He will live on in the hearts of anyone who appreciates the roots of the music they play.
I forgot he had Beverly D'Angelo in his band. She's fantastic.
yes Beverly was in his band when they played at the NIckelodeon back in the early 70's
I was looking up The Band and found this. I never knew a thing about Ronnie Hawkins before. That boy can sing and that band can play!
Thanks for all the music, Ronnie and the great musicians that you discovered, mentored and shared with us. RIP, The Hawk.
Beverly's certainly got the Dolly Parton 80s hair...but wow, is this ever great!
Glad you're enjoying this. The fact that it's the music of the day is a BIG factor, too.
jezebel Jones Yuwhen she went outside the wind wouda carried over to another state that fluffy big hair!
When someone loves what they do like Ronnie Hawkins loved it makes them just that much better. The man could bring it, an original. RIP
Absolutely! When you really, really like someone (as you obviously do) make sure you let them know. Have you noticed that all of the good ones are "one of a kind"?
@@paulmoore3712 When your tired of listening to whatever trend you like and if you are constantly changing the dial then something isn't doing the trick. You need to feel the beat and rhythm and if you aren't tapping a foot and feeling uplifted then you need a dose of Ronnie Hawkins and brother it will run up your toes and through your jive nerves and its like I know this feeling. Hell yeah, thats Ronnie Hawkins. He has been around since they rolled over the big rock and made that discovery. Do you think Ronnie and Sam Phillips ever did session? You can hear Sam say, "Man this cat has it going on" . Just turn it up and close the door, I'm busy. That's how I feel about it. Yes, a Great One.
@@wkhenslee BTW, this is my channel. I couldn't agree more. Ronnie, Litttle Richard, JLL, Merle ( Haggard & Travis) Glen Campbell ... and all of mandolin pickers in one of my other uploads are all "one of a kind". ALL of that music makes you HAPPY. FEEL GOOD music that doesn't exist today, in my mind.
Fletchs wife,,, wow what a voice..
Never thought that 👍👏👏👏❤
The Hawk....Immortal
No arguments here ,brother.
How good is that? I remember seeing Beverly in the movie Hair. Love Ronnie. RIP
ERIC KLAPPTSCHON Wonder how she got her "big hair"? What did she do
Ronnie Hawkins always could Rock. Mentored Robbie Robertson if I remember correctly. From there we get the Band. Please correct me if I am wrong. Ronnie is one of the Greats.
Yup. He came up from Arkansas with his Hawks (which included Levon Helm) to play the Southern Ontario bar and club circuit. As members of the Hawks got homesick and returned to Arkansas (except Levon), Hawkins recruited Ontario musicians that impressed him along the way. From Toronto he got Robertson, from Simcoe he got Rick Danko, from Stratford he got Richard Helm, and from London, Ontario he got Garth Hudson. Ronnie IS the Godfather rock n roll.
Yes...I saw Robbie audition around the late 50’s .. he is from Scarborough, (Toronto). We Used to hang out at the Coq d’ OR when Ronnie and the original band, the Hawks, backed him. Levon Helm was the drummer...and a sweet kid, grin.
Wow his son can sing
Denis right on my friend
@@noellarash367 I was thinking the same thing. I wonder if he ever did much in music?? He sounds Great!!
Imagine having Beverly D'Angelo as a backup singer, that's pretty Boss!
Who could forget Beverly s Patsy Cline in "Coal Miner's Daughter?" The other lady is also awesome, but every single member of this band is sterling! Stan Szelest was one of the piano dudes before Richard and Garth came on board, I think I remember reading in either Levon's or Robbie's book -- or maybe both. Cain't rightly remember, guess I'm gittin' old!
Im old but I remember tho I always forget what I remember
And Levon played Sissy’s dad.
@@sfbayareagirl dsmn straight!
Jeez - Ronnie is 82, Beverly is 65 and I'm just old.
Aren't we all ... keep on rockin' though, ... and breathing in a vertical position, because the alternative is one looooong bore.
Beverly D’Angelo was a close friend of the Zappa family. She hung out with Frank and Gail quite a bit in the '80s and up until Frank died.
Wow, really?? I had no idea!! And I “just met a woman named Dynamo-Hum”. Then again, I had no idea that Beverly was once one of The Hawk’s back-up singers, neither!!
Beverly was always hot. And a fine singer , eh sparky.
❤l love my MEMORIES of Ronnie Hawkins when l was in Hamilton....l worked for Harold Kudlets Talent Agency after school writing up the Contracts for their Performances. I was too young to go to Bars. RONNIE HAWKINS...MAY HE R.I.P. looked like Santa to me when he played guitar for me at the office(l worked there after school)I Loved Him❤&LEVON HELM from THE BAND was there too..MANY MEMORIES💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕🙏🙏
Awesome 👍
I agree, ... without equivocation. I used to do this back in the 60's when I was singing ... because my rhythm guitar player, Bill Longly, put me onto the song ... but I never did it like this. Suprisingly, ... Chuck Berry wrote it, but, to my mind... this is the BEST version of the song. EVER.
Many, Many Memories.
That blonde is my little honey actress Beverly D'Angelo
Beverly has got alot o hair
beverley used to sing back up vocals for other bands in the 70s and also used to perform in clubs in toronto. she was a singer on a friends album from the 70s called DIAMONDBACK 1974 , then she went to hollywood to film the vacation series of movies with chevy chase , and her movie career was launched. beverly also played a club called graceland at birchmount and lawrence in scarborough , where another friend played guitar and was the band leader . ronnie played everywhere around toronto , as he lived in the kawarthas on stoney lake in ontario in the 70s .
the king !!!
Wow, i never knew Beverly D'Angelo could sing! Man can she sing her little heart out! 🎸 🇨🇦
Wow that's good music
Absolutely! This was an era of music we'll never experience again. I cannot think of anything/anybody that's tuned into the soul of this music today, ... they try , but it just don't fly. Even country (music) has been bastardised into an unrecognizable mess of forgettable artists who simply don't measure up. And country music is/was the foundation of this "good ol' rock and roll"... that makes ya feel good when you hear it. Hawkins and his contemporaries were unique and unforgettable.
Ronnie is the Boss FOREVER.
If I can quote from a Lynrd Skynrd song, "You Got That Right"!
@@paulmoore3712 Beautiful.
" Rack Time " then " Motel Time " I was there !
R.I.P Ronnie Boy!,,,,,, Have fun with your Rockabilly Buddies in Heaven!
Incrível, bom demais, demais. maneco - Porto Alegre - RS - Brasil.
Obrigado
Merle Travis on 1st video I watched on your channel and now Beverly deangelo singing on second video on your channel. New favorite channel!
I can only say that there's no accounting for good taste! I have more material, ... similar in content quality, ... the biggest factor is TIME ... on many levels. I am glad you and others enjoy.
Wow was Beverly D'Angelo.. awesome
Does his son have his own band?
I have no idea. He certainly had the chops in this video ... and that was years ago. Sooo, the odds are pretty good that he has. I can only hope that he is into the same type of music as his father ( old rock) ... because the majority of "music" today isn't worthy of the name.
Rompin Ronnie let's er RIP!!!
Bello molto bello🎉
Gratzi.
Good pipes
Great to see, thank you. Does anyone know who the band is on this one?
God bless you Ronnie and I know your with Jesus now...Freddy Herrmann
Um, it's Dylan, not Dillon when one refers to Bob.
Thank you.I'm a stickler for accuracy by nature. Some might say "nitpicking" but it isn't. I'll fix it when I get the time ...which is at a premium these days.
Who’s the lead guitarist and drummer?
Beverly D'Angelo was a real hottie back in the day. I never knew she could sing as well as act.
The BEST interview with an entertainment personality you'll ever hear. No phony, cleaned up BS. Laughs a'plenty, GUARANTEED.

8:18 this is Beverly DeAngelo
Is that Beverly D’Angelo?!!
YES.
B J Cook and Beverly D' Angelo
The actress from National Lampoon vacation??
Yes, ... and "Coal Miner's Daughter", ... where she played the part of Loretta Lynn's good friend, Patsy Kline.
Got this in a personal message from a long time friend with
these comments:
Beverly
D'Angelo doing a nice job on Crazy. His
(Hawkins’) famous line to her was "Stick with me baby and I'll have you
fartin' through silk". Famous line
to Robbie Robertson, "Well son, you won't make much money, but you'll get
more pussy than Frank Sinatra". Andy
M. and I spent an interesting afternoon with him and Robbie, drinking at the
Coq D'or on Yonge Street, back in the day.
I bet Bev wes a sweet piece of kitty back in the day
Beverley D'Angelo was his GF at the time, before staring in lots of movies.
Who's on drums?
UA-cam has me BLOCKED !!!!!!!!!!!!! Time for a new UA-cam
Is that Jerry Lee on piano?
Not JLL. A boy out of Buffalo NY...Stan Szelest. Did some work with The Band too. One of the best.
I was Always HOT for Beverly D'Angelo, a Very Beautiful Babe with Gorgeous Eye's and she could Sing Too. I'd Definitely bring her to Multiple High Note's as often I had the chance to for sure!!
Who is that tickling them ivories?
A boy out of Buffalo NY...Stan Szelest. Did some work with The Band too. One of the best.
@@tonymagoo1 thnx. Good player indeed. Just across the lake .
@@tonymagoo1 There’s a vid on UA-cam of Stan playing “Whole Lotta Shakin”. Unreal. I’ve watched rock and roll for 45 years, and I honestly believe that Stan outplayed the Killer.
@@robertbruce8492 Maybe if you compared Szelest's best performance to one of Lewis's worst, but overall nobody could outplay the Killer. To use his own words,Jerry Lee Lewis was a Rock n Roll Country and Western,Blues playing Mother.....
Stan Szelest was a piano god. I was fortunate enough to play pedal steel beside him at the Club Utica in Buffalo, NY with the Jimmy Kay Band in the mid to late 70s. He drove the rhythm of band with his left hand. He was kind. He smoked too much and died too early.
Never heard of ronnie hawkins, now I know why.
No need to apologize for your having led a sheltered life, Ron ... consider this your epiphany into the real music experience.
RON SCHILD Ronnie did a good job on the song Mary-Lou in 1958. !
@@chairlesnicol672 well, he should consider this is the only song he knows.
