The University of Oregon comment hits home. Hundreds of our grads (I teach at the UO B-School) want to work there, and probably more than 100 end up there yearly through contract positions and other roles. It's not only about the stock value for employees; as one of the biggest employers in the Portland area, it trickles down to all sorts of things: cars, real estate, and high-end anything. Nike will bounce back, but it will be a challenging ride in Beaverton for a while.
Went to a Nick outlet in 2013 and it was awesome and had tons to choose from...5 yrs later selection dropped in half and prices were up on shoes that were far less quality wise.
I bought a pair of Cortez running shoes at Nike's first store in Eugene, Oregon, in 1972. Also got to watch Steve Prefontaine running, no, springing like a gazelle, through the streets while washing dishes at my apartment's kitchen window. Nike shoe quality was much better back then.
26:41 Nike has been relying too much on the past and they need to think more about the future. Look at all the top selling Nike's over the past years, they are all old reissues / new old drops
question for AMA: The US seems to be running away with all future technologies. Since the knowledge is widely available and assuming that talent is evenly distributed, what does the US do better than everybody else?
Ed’s take on Nikes diminishing brand power is spot on. In the last call it 5-7 years, they have done nothing but rely on past successes. Todays Nike feels no different than Champs. Quality is poor and tons of SKU with zero thought put into them. As someone who WANTS to be a Nike consumer, they’ve legit made it incredibly difficult.
There’s a lot more to it than a brand issue. Poor leadership is more to blame and lack of direction. Internally they have a good amount of issues to address.
First, Champs doesn’t sell their own shoes. They mostly sell Nikes, ironically. Second, Nike still makes a ton of cool stuff, they just aren’t marketed properly. They never made anything innovative and were built off Weiden + Kennedy brilliance. I hope Scott speaks on that aspect because it’s at the forefront of their demise to me.
The board of Njke hired a COO and put him in the CEO's chair. They have to hire a strong brand person from within and put them in the top spot with a good mentorship with a prior Nike CEO that was successful if possible.
You need to take a look at who Nike had on it's Affiliate Roster. When Tiger was having his problems, Nike was, financially, too. Kyrie Irving, Ja Morant, Tom Sachs, and the Olympic Track Uniforms for Women come to mind in that timeframe.
I used to really like Nike Dri-fit gym shorts, but the last pair I got the quality was just absolutely terrible. They are just a lot more options on the market today including ones that are definitely cheaper.
