One of the great naval masterpieces watched by my favorite reaction pair. The movie is amazing, but you guys are equally one of the best to watch it with; above so many. This just demonstrated so well how you're both so engaged in these movies and absorb the detail wonderfully. This one is definitely worth a second watch to absorb the detail. Fantastic content! Absolutely worth the subscription and proud to be a premium supporter!

LOL! I served in the surface fleet during the mid 1980's, and yes, we were overseas during the time this movie took place. I hate to say this, but one of our guys in my division ("R" Division) was a habitual liar. it didn't matter what kind of story you told from when you were a civilian, he always had a better story to tell (he thought so). and one day while we were on Westpac, he claimed to have seen a periscope out in the open ocean. we all laughed as we had his number...
years later and this movie came out in 1990. I was already out of service and back home with my own sea-stories... and as I watched at the theater I considered: that may have been the only time that guy actually told the truth!

the movie isn't based off a real story but it is inspired off an event from 1970's in which a soviet ship went rogue trying to get rid of the perceived corruption in the Soviet Union but that was mostly contained within the Baltic Sea and never strayed outside Soviet waters

5:20 - At first they are tracking a whale while he is training the new sonar cadet. However suddenly they hear the Red October passing from the Russian Naval base. Courtney B. Vance (Sonar Officer) has had a lot of supporting roles in movies and TV so you probably have seen or heard him in something.
8:19 - So he killed the Political Officer. In Soviet Russia there was always representatives from the political party watching over everyone to ensure they stayed loyal to the USSR Government and did not use their power to personal gain. In addition the Political party has their own secret police force (The KGB) that watches over people in secret and reports them to the Government. There was also the intelligence service in the military (the GRU) and they also watched over people and reported them to the military leadership. The concept in the Soviet Union was that everyone should always be patriotic and loyal, but to insure this they would place people watching everywhere. They would also pay people to turn in, or provide information on coworkers/neighbors/etc. And they spied on people at every level (in the military, in the government, normal workers, politicians) so that there was always potentially someone watching and waiting to turn you in.
Also Religion and cultural heritage in the USSR was heavily discouraged/banned. They wanted all the people to only be loyal to the country, not have any other codes, concepts, or things that could potentially give them ideas.
In this case Captian Ramius wife was both Religious and a bit of a progressive person. However Ramius was a very important military officer. So it is implied that in order to keep him loyal and inline with the government he believes they arranged for Ramius' wife to have an accident (i.e. they killed her). This finally pushed Ramius to over the edge and he realized that the secret weapons of war the Navy had been working on were not going to be used in defense or be used to protect people, they only could be used to attack. Thus he created a long term plan to find many of the officers he trained over the years and slowly put them all in positions on the crew where they could steal the boat and defect to The United States.
There are only three things Ramius could not control. One, The political officer...he would have no ability to order or select the political officer. Two, the spies. The cook was planted as a spy without his knowledge. Three, the doctor. The doctor he had selected ended up with an appendicitis and was replaced last minute with a new doctor. So most of the movie is the captain trying to figure out and control those three problems (of course the political officer was the easiest one).
10:26 - The Russians. In 1962 Castro's Cuba was allied with the Soviet Union. The Soviet's only had 20 ICBMs and most would likely fail before they could get to the United States (or miss their targets). So the USSR shipped a small number of missiles to Cuba, and from there they could theoretically hit about 80% of the mainland United States. This caused a big scare until John F Kennedy was able to negotiate their removal. The Movie is set in 1984. By that time the Soviet Union had thousands of nuclear ICBMs. The only advantage the United States had is that any launch from inside the USSR would take 7-12 mins to get to the United States. Being able to launch missiles from a submarine in secret near the United States would allow the Soviets to be able to strike the United States so fast there could be no attempt to counter attack. The United States also had similar capabilities, and also maintains nuclear missile submarines in secret locations throughout the world today.
15:43 - The Soviets had a lot of spies throughout the world. They were very effective at placing people in companies, the military, political power, etc. This is mainly because western countries could not close off everything and take away all the freedoms of everyone without evidence. In the USSR they could arrest and send anyone to jail for any reason at all. It was much harder to get people to spy on that government when there were so many people watching and willing to turn-in anyone who seemed suspicious.
18:31 - Ramius wants to defect because of his wife's 'accident'. However the Russian commanders want the United States to think he has gone crazy and want to kill Ramius before he gets to the United States with their new secret submarine. So the Russian government is going to say anything to ensure that the United States treat him as an enemy.
24:19 - Defect is a term used to signify that you are going to change sides or change loyalties to 'the enemy'. It's basically political asylum (requesting the other side protect you from your own government). Usually this is done either to trade secrets for power, money, etc. However in this case Ramius has decided that if he doesn't leak the secret submarine to the United States the Soviet Government will surely attack the United States. So by giving the United States access to the submarine he can keep things in a stalemate, both sides being afraid to attack the other.
26:25 - The sonar software was originally designed to detect underwater earthquakes. So when it encountered this very quiet sound it got confused and identified the submarine as some sort of small earthquake. However Jones figured out that it repeats too consistently to be anything natural, its actually just that the Soviets tuned the sound it makes to confuse the US computers. As they established early on however Jones doesn't just listen to the computer, he likes to listen to the sounds and make his own decisions.
28:23 - So this Book was the first in the Jack Ryan series. But essentially Jack Ryan was both a young genius but also an expert soldier, however during secret operations he broke his back. When he recovered he couldn't do military service anymore so the CIA recruited him to become an agent. However he also went back to school and earned his doctorate, and then transferred to be an analyst writing books on military war tactics. But as the series go on he keeps getting dragged into events where he ends up being one of the top agents as well as eventually taking the place of Admiral Greer as the director of the CIA (he then later goes into politics and becomes president). There are a lot of books in the series that add to the story.
29:37 - The Russians have very precise maps of the caverns at the bottom of the ocean. So they are following deep in these underwater caverns. But Ramius wants to be unpredictable, so instead going through the caves at the way the navy trains them to he is going to go though much faster. That way he will come out the other side much faster than anyone expects. He is also instilling fear into his crew. His nickname at training was the "Villainous Schoolmaster" meaning he pushes his students very hard. So he is demonstrating that even though the crew is trained well, he is still the master of submarines and knows much more than any of them were taught. He calmly handles the situation knowing he knows more than the entire Soviet Naval fleet. He is telling the crew that he knows all of their jobs better than they do, he knows it better than everyone coming after them. He is the only person who will be able to get them through this and they really should stop doubting him and realize how much of an expert he actually is.
35:18 - The captain did not damage the drive. In the end the cook being a secret KGB agent knew the captian's orders were not the correct ones. He was also the one watching when the political officer died, and all the officers were talking in secret in the room. So it's likely that he figured out that the captian and the officers were planning something and decided to ensure the ship could no longer be silent.
36:09 - The Soviets are shooting at him because he stole the submarine. They want to destroy him before he gets to the United States. The captian however knew that they would assume he would go directly for the United States, however instead he took the long way, way up north by greenland.
36:36 - they explain that the jet crashed because they got damaged. They were watching a soviet jet and got too close and the United States jet bumped into the Soviet Jet. The pilot was then returning back with a damaged plane and couldn't keep control through the landing.
37:17 - Remember Ryan almost died in a helicopter crash before. When a submarine is out at sea they only get radio messages when they come up near the surface, so they have no way of knowing exactly where the Dallas is or if they will come up when the helicopter gets there. And the problem is that to get Ryan out that far they have to remove all the safety equipment and just make it a "flying gas can".
42:16 - Aircraft are not grounded and submarines are. The blades of propellers can also generate massive amounts of static electricity. So normally what they would have to do is clip the wire clamps they were holding on the cable to discharge all the electricity built up on the helicopter connecting it via a wire to the boat/ocean. However since ryan was swinging his leg touched one of the people on the submarine and all the electricity went through that man instead. This is a very real thing, in aircraft carriers grounding of planes is extremely important and its one of the first thing done as soon as any aircraft lands. Both the landing hook help transfer energy as well as large grounding wires are attached as soon as the aircraft is safe to approach. An accidental electrical discharge can ignite fuel, injure people, damage the aircraft, or even cause accidents with weapons.

Sean Connery, the actor playing the Russian submarine commander, was originally offered the role of Gandalf in "The Lord of the Rings" movies. He read the book and the script but just didn't "get it", so he turned it down. The Typhoon (Project 941) is a real Soviet/ Russian ballistic missile submarine (SSBN). It just doesn't have a caterpillar drive. No one can get them working and they use too much electricity and make too much noise. Not that they're necessary. The latest ballistic missile submarines are actually quieter than the ocean around them. The typhoon class has 20 SS-N-20 Ballistic missiles capable of being fired from a distance of over 5,000 miles (8000km) with each missile, theoretically capable of having 10 independent reentry vehicles. In other words, in theory, but not in practice, it can launch 20. Missiles up to 200 warheads, each having a 200 kiloton nuclear bomb. Oh, and in the real world, they could hit the northern Continental United States including Washington, DC without leaving their ports.
The purpose of these are to provide a secondary strike capability. Basically, the idea is that even if an enemy were to destroy all of the nuclear bombers on the ground and ballistic missiles on land, a country would still be able to destroy its adversary.
United States, Russia, China, the United Kingdom, France, India, and potentially North Korea all have ballistic missile submarines of varying qualities. Pakistan and Israel have conventional submarines, which carry nuclear-tipped cruise missiles.

In fact, most Russian babies throughout the history of the Soviet Union were still baptized as Christians. (I've heard this from an actual Russian I know.) There’s actually a really Old Navy movie called #Frogmen . It’s around an underwater demolition team, which was the precursor for the Navy SEALs. I also enjoy the movie #TheEnemyBelow , which is about a US destroyer captain and a Nazi submarine captain hunting one another. I’d highly recommend that you guys react to both of those movies.

There's a great episode of Star Trek: The Original Series (there are many!) but the one called "Balance of Terror" is fantastic. Submarine warfare in space.

In case it’s not been said before…this is LOOSELY based on a true story. The real story involved a ship, not a sub. In 1975 the Soviet destroyer Storozhevoy (translated Sentry) had a mutiny onboard. Those among the crew that mutinied wanted to overthrow Leonid Brezhnev and the government of the ussr. Their plan was to go to the city of Leningrad and “restart” the soviet revolution, as they believed that the current government had strayed from the original purpose behind the original revolution. The leader was Valery Sablin, he was a young political officer. He seized control of the ship by convincing around half the officers and all of the sailors to help him launch a new russian revolution. This failed miserably, those that were involved were killed, punished harshly, and the most clueless of them were just beaten, tortured, demoted, and ran out of the military to become very looked down upon by the russians. Knowledge of this was suppressed in the ussr for years and eventually made it into the intelligence of our military. We, the USA, were NOT involved at all.
Then a young writer named Tom Clancy, who wanted to be in the military but was denied due to being near sighted, used a bunch of declassified and public information to learn about the original story. He then used his knowledge of naval warfare, also from the same sources and talking to individuals that had served, to create the story and make it VERY accurate! So accurate, he got a, uh, let’s say a “visit” from various government agencies to find out where he learned all these “secrets”. They were shocked to learn that they had let all the information out themselves, all be it across a lot of different sources and just little pieces here and there. Clancy pieced these together to form his vast knowledge about the military, and rolled that into a very successful writing career. His stories were almost all about military intrigue. I can honestly say I have never read a bad book by him. They all are very technical and twist around and around. The book version of “the Hunt for Red October” is so much more than the movie version, which itself is great. This is by far the best movie based on his books in my opinion.

You guys should totally react to the other Tom Clancy movies. Several center around the character Jack Ryan. #ActOfValor is a more recent movie based on a Tom Clancy script, which stars active duty Navy SEALs. Or rather, they were active duty at the time of the filming. Another submarine movie that you might want to look at is “K19 The Widow Maker.”

No, this not a true story but it is based on an incident in the Baltic Sea between Sweden and the USSR. The actual conflict much calmer than this tale. Still, this is one of a series of Cold War movies like War Games, 13 Days, Dr. Strangelove and Atomic Blonde that put the Cold War into perspective. Nice one.

Jack Ryan is one of the all time top repeating characters in a series of books - I do happen to think this incarnation of him is probably the "weakest" though, as a fan of the works of Tom Clancy. It definitely isn't a true story though a lot of things 'like' this happened during the Cold War for sure.
In submarine warfare movies, even though I'm a fan of Clancy's works I personally prefer Crimson Tide.

If you liked Sean Connery in this, you would probably love him in "The Wind and the Lion", where he plays a Muslim warrior, named "Raizuli the Magnificent, Lord of the Riff, and Defender of the Faithful". though similar in many ways, I think it's a better and more entertaining movie than "Lawrence of Arabia". I would be interested to hear what you think.

Another recommendation, though probably one that would fit better on your other channel, is to react to the content from the UA-cam channels #Oversimplified #TheArmchairHistorian and #SimpleHistory . That first channel just released part three of their second Punic war series. And they also have some great videos about the American Revolution and the American Civil War. They also made a great video about prohibition, when the US tried to ban liquor, and the pig war, when the US and Britain nearly went to war over the shooting of a pig.

A 688 Los Angeles class has a way better sonar than an Alfa class. But the Alfa can dive way deeper (titanium aloys hull), and can easly run up to 45 or 50 knots with it's plutonium-lead cooled reactors. So it's one of the hardest at the time to smoke unless you really. Really. Know what you're doing.

These are a really good series of movies, the tv show is pretty decent too. I hope you watch the other movies. Someone different plays the character Jack Ryan, one of my favorite actors, Harrison Ford. He was Han Solo in Star Wars and was Indiana Jones. I can’t remember if you’ve watched the third Indiana Jones movie or not, but the Russian captain in this, played by Sean Connery, plays Indie’s dad in the third one. A must see… Another fun fact, Sean Connery was the original James Bond in the 60s. He does have an epic voice. And finally, since you’ve been watching movies with the actor Matt Damon (The Martian, Interstellar…) And if you like these types of stories, you might like the Jason Bourne movies. I think The Bourne Identity is the first, and I can’t remember if you’ve watched any of those yet. My best friend’s husband was in the Navy, and was stationed on a submarine for a bit. He also loved these movies and books, they named their son Jack Ryan, after the main character 😉
