  • Malayalam Movie Industry is perhaps the most well-respected movie industry among the Indian movies Industries. In this talk, Danseuse and Actress, Rima Kallingal challenges the status quo and questions the narrative as it currently exists in one of the largest movie Industry in India. She has been fighting gender-based discrimination since the time she was a child and her fight for equality has led her to co-found along with other actresses in the Malayalam movie industry, the Women in Cinema collective, a rights based group dealing with issues faced by women in the Movie industry. Rima Kallingal is a danseuse, model and Kerala state award winning actress. She began practising dancing when she was three years old & has performed on national and international stages. After being named First Runner-up in the Miss Kerala 2008 contest, she went on to pursue a career in acting. She is popular for her roles in movies like City of God, Indian Rupee, Nidra , 22 Female Kottayam , August Club and Rani Padmini. She is also skilled in various martial arts like Taekwondo, Chao and Kalari. She is currently pursuing her dream project which is a dance academy named ‘Mamangam’ to provide mentorship to aspiring dancers. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

      See, the problem is not in the message but the example... The example is trivial.. There might be multiple reasons why her mother did it... Maybe her brother likes fish more... And it's not like women alone sacrifice... In Average india... Men also sacrifice daily for their mother, father and sister and daughters.. U think it's easy... But her outlook is not compreheneive and lacks the maturity to see it from a 360 degree... Athrem ullu

    'Dislikes' are outnumbering the 'likes' because she is demanding a gender equal society?. Gender bias is real. Fish fry scenes are real. She put it in a humorous way. Nothing to mock and make memes out of it. If only people understood the difference between feminists and 'feminazis'. We need real feminists in our world not hypocrites masquerading as feminists aka feminazis. Well done Rima Kallingal for doing this talk.

      No, people are not against feminism.If someone like Parvathy(social worker) were to say the same words, the video would have more likes than dislikes.People are questioning her about equal pay in Mayanadhi and 22FK plagiarism not to counter her arguments regarding feminism. They are simply questioning her credentials. If she is the most honest person she claims to be, then why the hypocrisy when it comes to something she is directly related to? All she has to do is come out and answer the doubters. Thats how it works, its a mutual exchange

    • @edwinvarghese
      @edwinvarghese 6 років тому +8

      Julian Sam I totally understand your argument. Demanding equal pay in movie industry is absurd. It depends on the artist's market value. After the watching her talk, I felt that, the emphasis was more on the discrimination which women have to face in the general society (from household to work). Many things what she said is true as well, especially the scenarios at home. There are many commenting the fish fry problem were a thing of the past, but the discrimination of various other kinds still exist. I also agree that there better qualified personalities, but the idea remains the same. I support the idea. It's good to see someone from Kerala to come up on a stage like Tedx and deliver a speech like this.
      (PS: I never said people are against feminism. )

      @@ME-yj5xb If that was the case, it would have made news. Bigger issue with 22FK is blatant plagiarism. I cant recall a single moment from the movie you can call original. Almost every movie done by Aashiq Abu has had similar claims of plagiarism, Rani Padmini, Mayanadhi and even his newest movie Virus. For some reason Rima never felt the moral obligation to call out her husband regarding any of these issues

    I always heard about the fish fry incident and that Reema had to face some social media attacks. Now listening to your talk, I have no idea why fish fry became a major talk. Maybe the people who attacked you in social media only understood the word fish fry in your entire talk. Or Maybe they felt attacked. If they felt attacked, it’s a good thing. Because they know that there is a conflict inside themselves. It may be hard for them. But they will change eventually. Because if they didn’t feel uncomfortable, they would not have attacked Reema back.
    Your talk is inspiring. The fact that you credited the other strong women in the industry who stood up for themselves is amazing. A woman like you standing as an example and supporting other women is educational. A gorgeous woman like you talking about the power (feminism), may challenge some people. That is a good result. It created a reflection.
    What I am trying to say is “ I support Reema”.

      @@sunnysandhyamalanthra169 she's nearing 20 now. It's a fight for her everyday, but she's able to study for her degree, by working herself and with the help of various scholarships. I had tried contacting social resources, but all of them have the misogyny deep rooted. They believe that she shouldn't be studying,if her parents are against it. The seat that she got in her college was through merit and the scholarships can usually cover the academic fees. Hostel fees and other expenses are met by her part time job. The pressure to be married and the humiliation is so high, that she is an anxious mess after every family event. None of her family or her extended family has girls as old as 19 stay a spinster and they keep taunting her. Atleast, her education is going on and she excels in it.

In that way it is necessary that equality should begin from the kitchen. I have female friends who really want to join army and are ready to die for India and us Indians. I hope they'll get a chance to go for wars like men. And it's not about a particular job. We need to educate the society to provide equal opportunities for all. As we all look up at film stars rather than soldiers, we mostly sees the change or empowerment they are trying to bring in their industry. From this video the thing you should understand is that the gender inequality could be seen even in dividing a fish fry. Then just think about the inequality women are facing at their workplace. There being worse cases shouldn't be a reason for us to lay back. As a supposedly highly educated society, we are lagging behind in terms of protecting basic human rights. For 100% literacy, we lack ethics and logic to consider criticism. Sometimes, we are too damn stubborn for our own good.

    • @asm4589
      @asm4589 6 років тому +10

      Sasha, I guess the people in Kerala are intelligent enough not to give away the privileges of being treated special. Their stubbornness seems to be a careful strategy. Several men get what they want - tasty dishes, clean clothes, child care, old age care and what not, free of cost. Why would they give away the privilege? Similarly several women enjoy the luxury of being taken care, financially, lest they have to face the tough job market. Yes, it comes with a cost of slavery for women, yet atleast a good number of them secretly enjoy getting married at a young age and settle without facing the real challenges of outside world. The sufferers are those who sincerely wish to live and work shoulder to shoulder. Our education is not training us to reason logically. People don't pursue happiness; rather they settle for convenience.

    Gender discrimination is taking place in most households in kerala, right from doing the dishes, eating privileges, doing the laundry and the list goes on and on. The sad fact is that most women, like her mother are not able to recognize the discrimination and just think it's normal. The mother and father in the family may be working, and the father comes back from work and take rest, while the mother cooks for the family and do other random chores in the household. This happens in at least 70 percent of the houses in kerala. And everyone consider this as normal🤷‍♀️.

      It's most probably because the father earns more and it's because of the father's income the family is sustained. The mother, in most households, works for an auxiliary income and predominantly for her and the children's petty expenses. There are studies which invariably prove that fathers who are heads of their families spend lion's share of their income for their wives and children whereas mothers who are heads of their families spend way more on themselves than for their family.
      In other words, the mothers' job is most probably disposable whereas the same isn't the case for the fathers.

    Yes men always had and is having upper voice over women in everyhouse. And girls are taught from childhood to behave in that way. Most of the internet trolls here abusing rima have this idea deeply embedded into core of their mind as if its their right and are simply unwilling to accept the fact. I believe idea of feminism means moving towards that hypothetical family where man and woman washes and iron their own clothes, both of them earn for family, has equal role in kitchen and equal power in decision making with regard to family. Well said RIMA

    Yes, It really starts from the households. For me the life changed after my marriage. As a person who wish to drive, my in laws (and even husband who is abroad) don't allow me to drive the car nor make me to sit in front seat. How many of you have noticed that the front seats are reserved for the males (if there are) and female can only sit there if there is no male travellers?

    Now thats a women who doesn't understand how business in film industry work....
    Lets take a new gen star in Kerala like Antony Pepe who has stared in 7-8 movies and Lets take Reema compared to Antony she has done more than 25 movies ....
    Now I am planning on producing 2 movies with these 2 stars as lead roles Pepe in 1 movie and Reema in another.....
    Stories of both movies are brilliant so who will bring me more money..... Reema or Pepe 100 percent it would be Pepe why because he has more fan base and he would be able to pull in more crowd......Star value of an actor and an actress are very important...
    Lets take Nayantara if I cast Nayantara Obviously she will be paid more why because she can bring me more money with her fan base......

    Thank you Rima Kallingal! We all must reflect how women are treated in the society as the future world hinges on that basis. The key to progressive society is beyond the barriers of sexism, casetism, ageism and stereotypical roles/professions meted out for women that denies progress, prosperity and freedom of women.
