    Great review of the machine, Sean! I loved your creative approach to fixing and refixing the purge tower. For me, my purge towers seem to fall over as well, but, I've yet to be even half as creative as you :)

      A lot a research went into it and it's more plug-and-play than many other printers. Also, they need to make profit.

      I agree. I fully understand that a higher quality printer tends to give a better print quality and higher usability. However, is it worth 4.5X my( $2000) most expensive machine that produces great prints?

    Made this comment in the last ultimaker review, but who is this video geared to? I'd suspect 90% of your viewers are not willing to pay 3k for a 3D printer. That being said, looks like a badass printer and well done on the Zorg. If you're looking to spread the word about 3d printing, get a normal reprap printer, and go through the assembly and tuning.

      3K today, off the shelf tech for under $500 within a few years. It's like anything else - I watch car shows even though I don't have a license and have no intention of buying a car... but I can see myself in a Tesla in 5-10 years. I'm not in the market for a $1000+ Surface Pro, but I recently got a used SP2 for $250. This video is really interesting stuff for anyone with any interest in 3D printing, and that's a good thing.

      Phil659 I have an i3 at home but my boss wants me to pick out a printer for prototyping at work for under $4k. This printer is what I'm going to suggest because of the features and also ease of use as we don't have a lot of time to tinker with a cheaper printer. I think we are the target market for the printer and partially for this video.

    • @RobindenHertog
      @RobindenHertog 7 років тому

      I would assume that estimate is for a UM2? add 15-25 watts for the 2nd hotend.
      also the power supply is 210 Watts and it maxes that out when heating up the
      buildplate when it's cold.
      when it is on temperature though it doesn't use that much.

    • @AtomsLab
      @AtomsLab 7 років тому

      That was the wattage I found on some UM2 forums for printing PLA at 200C with a single hotend active, using a build plate at 60C.

    • @RobindenHertog
      @RobindenHertog 7 років тому

      A. Smith that's what I thought, the UM3 uses a but more during a multi material print, but not that much more. I just thought it is worth noting it does use the full power available sometimes and a bit more nominally than the UM2 for sure (extra hotend + more electronics(+ extra cpu)). should we measure this?

    cool to see this review!
    The print cores should actually come calibrated out of the factory though (at least the AA that is in the printhead with the BB core that is in the little accessory box), so that is odd that they weren't and a firmware upgrade shouldn't delete that data.
    BTW shame on you for unplugging hot (orange/red pulsing) print cores.
    that is exactly what that colour was meant to prevent :(

    Dual extruders, true revolution. 😄 For $3500 for such a small machine. I have been using my dual extruders flawlessly on my Flashforge Creator pro for a little over 3 years now and for a little under $900. I’d pass on this unfairly priced thing. I better wait for 3Dpassion to come out with their big premium machine. They promise $2500 price range and there will be SO MUCH more value for money.

      Yeah, I hate it. We don't manufacture a big percentage of a printer components, almost everything has to be imported, so even if a Brazilian company would try to make its own printer, it would still be very expensive.
      We have this problem with everything here. Lots of taxes, and we get no return from public services.

    it would be great if tested could try and test some of the cheaper reprap i3 style clones coming out of China right now. ultimaker are great but when you can pickup a kit for $150 and get started at home, ultimately these $1000 + machines are going to die off. I have great respect for those companies, but 3d printing is finally becoming affordable to every day Jo's now just as it should have been. RerRap is coming into its own and these big companies aren't beating China in the race to the bottom on price

    • @hankhill8973

    • @subodai85
      @subodai85 7 років тому

      Hank Hill well you don't have all the repraps. the anet a8 is a great starting point and you get a lot of printer for your money. it's self upgradable and is a far better learning exercise than any ultimaker. for a 7th of the price it's a better way to get people into the hobby. the entry level bar is finally at a level where it's feasible for real people to try. ultimakers have their place but the sub $200 dollar market is picking up the pace... and the print quality isn't as bad as people seem to think and is easily upgradable or fixable with a little reading around the communities that are springing up around them.

    • @hankhill8973
      @hankhill8973 7 років тому

      subodai85 you can buy a beginners printer for cheap but if you want a truly good machine, you have to spend some money. you dont get all the features of an ultimaker with any reprap and you surely cant buy a more polished product

    Reminds me of Dot matrix printers. When Bi Directional printing was a big deal. Come on let's stop with the step by step upgrades and get to Laser 3D printing. Ok Why can't you connect directly to the printer? It's not an expensive option.

    • @RobindenHertog
      @RobindenHertog 7 років тому

      There is the equivalent of a small computer inside the printer so you don't need to attatch yours and those printers you used over USB were not being monitored over USB but sending gcode and controlling the printer which is now done from the printer itself allowing you to take your laptop away when the print still continues.
      While monitoring print progress can be done in a bunch of ways over the network you can still see on the screen how far the print is, and print time estimates are fairly accurate if you slice with Cura.
      We have laser 3d printing it's called selective laser sintering (AKA SLS) and it's cool if limited to one material, still hugely expensive and a mess of powder.
      similar limitations aptly to SLA, imho but if you want high resolution SLA is still the way to go.

      Yes I understand that the printer has a small computer installed inside the printer. Just about everything has a small computer inside of it. Hell the Mars rover has a computer inside of it. BUT it needs someway to interface with it so that you can reprogram it.

    It's impressive, but honestly still nowhere near the quality of a traditionally manufactured product. Resolutions have to get much better, and also we need to be able to print in stuff other than plastic at home, like aluminum or something.

    Kind of a tool for recommending this printer at all. Dual extruders, dissolvable supports, purge towers, capacitive leveling is not an ultimaker exclusive. These options are present in much cheaper printers. The Ultimaker is not capable of printing higher resolutions or at higher quality's then other FDM printers. This printer is overpriced, and you would be a fool to buy one.

    lmao You totally gotta get him to say "ultimate"..
    Cause the way he says the name of the printer, "ull-TEE-maker". It's hilariously weird sounding..

    i have an Ultimaker at my school and i have been designated to keep it running, IT IS BUGGY AS ALL HELL, and it breaks ALL the time, it is fun to use and print things but if you leave it alone it tends to start printing a western tumble weed and physically break itself by bending and breaking peaces like detection triggers. if you aren't willing to spend all of your time fixing it and watching over it DO NOT BUY ONE. And it cannot in any way print flat horizontal faces. Also the option to automatically support your object just encases your print in a brick that you cannot open(i guess it is supported though).

      Are you handling the Ultimaker original or the Ultimaker 3 in this video? That distinction really matters when you're giving advice about the product.

    if you forget about the dual heads on the one advertised here, the rigidity, less maintenance and compact size
    my $200 anet a8 prints better, faster and better quality then my ultimaker 2
    With the ultimaker I have issues with material removal, feeding, had to mod the bed to use 4 level screws to finally get a level bed
    Except for the barely larger bed size then my anet its not thousands of dollars better
    But they are very nice if you need to move them around and setup in various places as they are super rigid and the enclosure/lights are nice
