Thank your for this reaction dear coach. You really must hear the next 2 songs. It's a 3 song medley, tenement funster, flick of the wrist, lily of the valley. I love them. The guitars in flick of the wrist are addictive! Rock on!
Roger played guitar before he learnt drums. He plays guitar on his solo albums. He did get his wish for a good guitar because he now has quite the collection. The telecaster that Brian plays on Crazy Little Thing Called Love was originally Roger’s. Brian wanted a period sound and it happened to be lying around the studio at the time. 😀
Amen, Mrs Coach. You nailed it - Queen broke the mould on everything, which is why you never quite know what you're going to get when you listen to a Queen song.
It's a great song, and it's got one of my favourite solos. Roger's even self-covered it when touring as a solo artist, most recently in October 2021. The studio version's interesting because it's got Mr Taylor (then aged 25) doing his own backing vocals (literally all of them), Mr Deacon (then aged 23) on bass and acoustic guitar, Mr May (27) being ill and recovering just in time for his May-estic electric lead work, and Mr Mercury (28) on piano. He didn't mind playing a supporting role as he was always serving the song and he was always encouraging towards his bandmates, respecting their talents as much as they respected his.
This song goes straight into 'Flick of the wrist ' a classic Freddie song, that's well worth checking out.. Keep up the good work guys thanks as always.
One for Coach, Brian's solo "Cyborg" a heavy metal style song written for a computer game "Cyborg". Or Brian's hit song "Driven by you" which was written for a Ford car company advert. Brian ended up writing a longer version for the single.
@@CoachCastTV "Cyborg" is really great and as Coach is a computer gamer: Does he know, that there is an EA Game named "QUEEN - The eYe" ... < old 5 cd-roms game! :)
Thanks for doing my pick!!!… and yes, Roger does play guitar! He writes many, if not most of his own songs on guitar and contributes music besides the lyrics… lotta talent there 😊
Roger, Roger, Roger. He is something else lol. Love this. I read somewhere that there are 5 rhythm guitars in this track. Brian also uses delays. Roger’s kit was set up in the middle of the room to get a more fuller dynamic sound. All vocals and backing vocals are Roger.
Roger started out on the guitar and played guitar in The Cross and his solo work. When John would sing backing vocals most times they had his mic turned way down because he did not like to sing. I can’t remember which track but there is at least one that Roger sings and plays all instruments.
Thank you. Short and sweet, and I would have loved it to be longer..... Roger was always a babe magnet, and it is no secret that for years, he took full advantage of that fact.... 😉 And he started out playing guitar before he turned to the drums.....
Roger's song will drift right into Freddie's "Flick Of The Wrist" that drifts right into Freddie's "Lily Of The Valley". To my mind, it's the oddest medley - but none the less.. "Tenement Funster" is my favorite early Queen song from Roger (& his sparkly PINK Converse sneakers).
This does go right into Flick of the Wrist, which would have been good to react to along with this. But, if you want a more rock and roll song with Roger's vocals do try Fight From the Inside (News of the World album) or Fun It (Jazz album), both songs Coach will approve of. Take care and know you're both doing a fantastic job!!!
John doesn't sing on any studio recordings, kind of does some live but very rarely. Roger plays guitar. Many of his solo songs feature him playing bass, guitar and keyboards. I lived in the same village as him in the 90s and saw him and his family and crew in the local pub. Been to his house a few times including the recording studio there and his barn where his band, The Cross, rehearsed. One evening he came in the local pub and my friend Kerry had one of those little hand held keyboard things and we got Roger to sit with us and he played Radio Ga Ga on it for us
Thanks, Coachies... Roger Taylor and Brian May were the real "rockers" in Queen.. Rog has a very cool voice... appreciate your listen......yep it was going straight into "Flick of the Wrist" - which was probably their earliest "diss" song... hope you get around to it... (p.s. John almost never sang.. but wrote fantastic hits for the band....) appreciate your reactions...
You are almost finishing Roger's catalogue with Queen. Here's what's left, in order I think you'd enjoy the most: 1. Fight from the inside; 2. More of that Jazz; 3. Drowse; 4. Loser in the end; 5. Fun it. There are two others, but are b-side tracks.
This song was actually alternately 'Young And Crazy' and 'Teen Dreams', before it became 'Tenement Funster'. But Roger and his purple shoes, it's just priceless 😅 Pink Converse were his trademark and even now at the age 75 you can see Rog in a pair of red shoes... 😍 Roger has gone through hell and back when he was just 16. He drove his group's Reactions van and crashed it into a truck parked wrongly at the side of the road in a deep fog. Rog was ejected through a wind shield but sustained just cuts and bruises but his friend at the passenger seat was badly hurt and just the fact that a bystander called the police prior for the wrongly parked truck saved him from bleeding to death. Nobody blamed Roger but the police found him responsible and it took Rog 7 years to finnaly clear his name. No, it's not been a bed of roses for any of our 4 Queen boys but together they conquered the world! ❤
@@CoachCastTVyes, that was a horrendous ordeal but it ended ok. It didn't diminish Roger's love for fast cars. You should listen to his song "Ride The Wild Wind" from the Innuendo album. Freddie is singing the song but Roger made a demo and it's on YT accompanied by footage of Roger driving a go-cart at Budapest Hungaroring F1 ... Priceless. Roger had several car accidents over the years: Once he parked his Range Rover in a ditch, another time his Ferrari caught fire (and his Aston Martin later as well) when he was driving to the south of France. He also had an accident with his Bentley when during a blizzard the windscreen wiper fell off and Roger decided to wipe the snow of his windscreen with his own hands. 😮😂
Great reaction! One of the many things I love about Queen is that they are so full of surprises. Just when you think you have them all figured out musically, suddenly a song like this comes up and takes a new, sharp turn that completely catches you off guard. I vehemently agree, Queen completely shattered the mold and then some! As others have said, this transitions into "flick of the wrist", which is a diss track precursor to "death on two legs". live at the rainbow is particularly awesome! ua-cam.com/video/bnBOBssfIGk/v-deo.html
James Hetfield said that he was playing the intro of this song when he came up with Nothing Else Matter. I'm Queen fan, for me it is one better Rogers songs in 70s. I love Tenement Funster and I like it even more because it kind of inspired Metallica's great song.
this song has beer recorded togheter with the song 'flick of the wrist'.. they were two songs recordered at the same time as some of their firsts albums just because they had not enough moneys to occupy studios for too long
Hi folks! Just when I was starting to wonder, you come up with an oldie but a goodie. The immortal Sheer Heart Attack album. (I knew my husband was in when he told me he played this album relentlessly in college. Yep, you'll do.) This one def fueled my early interest in Rog and his, let's say, offbeat lyrics. Yes, it goes immediately into "Flick of the Wrist" so that's why it sounds stunted. I'm a little surprised at your reaction to this. (John does not sing. Don't believe the hype.) Your allusion to "illicit substances" is chuckle-worthy, but really, his solo stuff is more in that neighbourhood. (Oh, and the tryptophan thing is a myth, too.) Love you guys!
"Purple shoes" real Queen fans know that Roger's signature shoes are the pink sparkly Converse 😂 Roger has written many songs about his youth, some nostalgicand some more sad, for example These Are The Days Of Our Lives, Sheer Heart Attack, Fight From The Inside, The Loser In The End, Drowse and also some stuff from The Cross and his solo albums. Okay, so this is probably irrelevant and going to ruin the mood, but I still want to mention it; Roger’s Electric Fire album. In my opinion, it's a great album and is heavily underrated. Roger always used his songwriting as a way to express his thoughts and opinions, and in one of the songs, he brings awareness to domestic violence. Roger's a survivor of domestic violence but rarely talks about it, which is understandable, of course (Sadly not every interviewer gets the memo that it's a private subject). He mentioned in an interview that he thinks that it's a subject that is not talked about enough, and I certainly agree. The point is that people often see Roger's songs as unserious (I'm In Love With My Car lol) but many of his songs have a deeper meaning and a reason behind it. Many do not see that. But anyway, thank you for this reaction, great as always :D
Thank you for sharing that. That's really sad that he had to go through that, and it's good to see he was able to channel that experience into art that may bring more awareness to such a serious topic. We appreciate this knowledge.
@theresarandall7448 exactly. They always see him as the loud, outgoing partyanimal, but Roger's work is more than just a song about a car. Take Drowse, for example; the poetic lyrics have such a deep meaning, although many people overlook it.
Rog had a complicated (abusive?) father but his father bought him a first drum kitt. Rogers parents divorced when he was little and his mother was very supportive when young Roger began to show signs of his love for music. She was also "responsible" to support Smile/Queen booking gigs for the boys to play in Cornwall. From when Rog became famous with Queen, he has been involved with a number of domestic abuse and child abuse prevention charities.
Queen's "Tenement Funster" is a lively and fun song that explores themes of individuality, escapism and the hardships of youth and poverty. The song's lyrics describe the experiences of a rebellious and fantasy protagonist who uses music and fast cars to free himself from the restrictions of his surroundings.
Just to address the John Deacon “voice”. Even though in music videos like You’re My Best Friend it appears John is singing, he actually does not. The only time you may hear his vocals is in the live show providing back up, but even though he is a talented bass player and song writer unfortunately singing was not one 😂 There is a UA-cam clip where you can hear John joining in with Radio Gaga
