Shortest explanation I can manage for those unfamiliar; Vtubers are simply streamers (or content creators) who use a digital persona instead of a face cam. This could be for a variety of reason including; safety/security (harder to dox you if they don't know who you are to begin with), comfort, marketing, fun, whatever. For this part basically think of any of the storytime youtubers from back in the day who you never saw the face of and instead used an animated "self". Same idea, just real-time. Individualized vtuber models can range anywhere in cost from ~$600usd (for something simple with limited animation) to $20k+ for very particular and highly animated models (see: Ironmouse from Vshojo or the indie vtuber Shylily). Movement and mouth tracking is generally done with a webcam for fairly basic tracking or IR for more detailed tracking of facial expressions (many use a recent-gen iphone to use its facial scanning system as tracking). Hololive is the largest agency of vtubers currently and is one of the "big 3" alongside Nijisanji (who has gotten into a significant amount of hot water over the past year or so) and Vshojo (which is a predominantly north american agency as opposed to the other two which are based in Japan but with English-speaking branches). Hololive currently has 88 active talents across 6 branches and 3 language categories, and debut their talents in "generations" of which there have been 24 to date. The CEO "Yagoo" (the face-person in Holocure Jesse kept yelling "who is that?!?" about) founded Cover Corp (the parent company of Hololive Productions) with the idea of creating "virtual idols" (see; jpop or kpop idols). It is said that every day yagoo's dream dies a little more with how degenerate some of the talents are. The way most "Corpo" (i.e. company-owned IP) vtubers work is a model is developed and a talent is found to fit that model, or the talent is found and works with the model designers and company to put together their model. Many vtubers also do original songs or song covers, reflecting the origin of "virtual idols", though some lean more into this than others (i.e. Mori Calliope who has put out 5 EP's + 3 albums and has a recording contract with Universal, or Hochimachi Suisei who has put out 2 full albums). In Holocure the "enemies" are in fact fan or mascot representations, e.g. Mori Calliope's Deadbeats and Gawr Gura's Chumbuds (aka Shrimps- a play on "simp") in stage 1, and Nekomata Okayu's Onigiri and Inugami Korone's Koronesuki (the weird poorly drawn head things in stage 2. The items, weapons, and abilities in the game are typically lore references or memes within the hololive community, such as the "plug type asacoco", introduced to hololive canon by now-former member Kiryuu Coco (their first english-fluent talent, who ended up doing a lot to bring the idea of vtubing outside of Japan) in a parody commercial for a mood-lifting-drug delivery system that is "so convenient" and just so happens to be a tail plug that looks just like her dragon tail. There is a significant amount of "lore", some of it more canonical than others, which I guess is kind of bound to happen when you have almost 90 people streaming a total of hundreds of hours a week for years. Much of it is more like "inside jokes" or memes than "lore" per se, but are still widely referenced in the community. I apologize for my lack of brevity. There's a lot to go through depending on peoples' knowledge basis in the category.
For more individual specific information: HoloMyth (english gen1): Mori Calliope (aka Calli or Dad) is "the grim reaper's apprentice". She is also a musician/rapper and puts out a significant amount of music, both covers and original. She recently made the actual ending theme for the Suicide Squad Isekai anime. She is generally very kind and fairly sarcastic but easily gets kinda sick of people's shit, and does her best to fight off her natural vulgarities to varying results. She is frequently referred to (and sometimes answers to) "Dad" because of her demeanor. Her fans are the Deadbeats; a skeleton army and also in reference to her music career. (I highly recommend checking out "Off with their heads" and "End of a Life" for two very different examples of her original music) Ninomae Ina'nis (aka Ina) is a "priestess of the Ancient Ones". She's very much chill streams on the 2nd monitor type of vibes, with a soft voice and bad puns. She often does art streams and did some of the original marketing art for her genmates. Her fans are the Takodachi. Semi-amorphous purple blob-octopus-things. "WAH" is a kind of catch-all catchphrase that can mean many things, but is often "we are happy". "The forbidden WAH" is less happy and more... horny. Takanashi Kiara (aka Kiwawa) is a "phoenix" (totally not a chicken). She's tri(?)lingual, originally from Austria (thus, German as the mother-tongue) and fluent in both English and (for the most part) Japanese. She is a frequent pusher of various "ships". She is a hell of a dancer and is frequently the catalyst for collaborations. Her fans are the always overworked employees of her fast food restaurant KFP (Kiara Fried Phoenix). Gawr Gura (aka Gooba/Goomba) is a "shark person from Atlantis." She is currently the most-subscribed member of Hololive (not just EN) and gives a lot of... troublemaker little sister vibes? She's not dumb, but some moments make everyone question that (see; her minecraft 2x2 moment, or her "1 to 6" moment alongside Kiara). Her fans are the Chumbuds; semi-anthropomorphic shrimp (sometimes called "shrimps" as in "simp"). Amelia Watson (aka Ame - read ah-may) is "totally not a sherlock holmes parody". She recently semi-graduated (i.e. "semi-retired") from hololive, but was definitely the most "gamer" of HoloMyth; being pretty decent in several FPS games, and a frequent spouter of "your mom" jokes, and generally a bit of a prankster often t Calli's chagrin. She has also been the most tech-literate of Myth, frequently helping the others with their tech issues. Her fans are the "teamates".
Okayu's fanbase are called Onigiryan. Also in my opinion what happen on stream and the memes is the actual lore and what people called "lore" is just the character's backstory.
I would add that Tokino Sora their first talent and A-Chan the lady with the purple hair who runs the shop in this game along with Yagoo are who started hololive. Sora had a dream of becoming an idol and her best friend A-Chan while trying to get equipment found Cover Corp Who had the equipment. So Yagoo decided to give this idol thing a chance. Yagoo is also best girl. He's legitimately a really nice dude who cares about the talents and the people who work for him.
@@oreohunter7798 I got Vampire Survivors first but after playing Holocure I can't really go back. I've played a couple of the survivor type games now and I always get frustrated by the lack of control (DRG: Survivor being another). It actually was a major motivation for my current game project I am working on.
Holocure lotterally ruined the genre for me. I just wish I could give the dev money but I respect the hell out of him for not wanting to be payed for it.
As a takodachi it makes me so happy that Ina is your favorite even without knowing anything about her outside the game, also I love that you made so many 'horny' jokes without even coming across Marine, the "17 years old (2nd season)" horny pirate girl
Kaela is essentially the God Emperor of Mankind before he became GEoM, Just a messianic figure that absolutely destroys every game she plays and will always help others when she can(though only if she feels like it, and she's also prone to bullying others should she thinks it'll be funny 😂)
Jesse: Think of the Yogscast. Then gender-swap their roster. Amp up their gimmicks a little more, to Pro Wrestling tier. Then franchise them a lot. A lot.
Old Yogscast, specifically. Current Yogscast is just IRL Simon/Lewis/Duncan/Sips/Ravs/Rythian/Zylush/Nilesy/the new people/etc, but exaggerated and dumped into the world of the games they play. Old Yogscast they played characters.
Waiting for the inevitable comment explaining every last question asked, but to answer one major one: nearly all the enemies are modeled after the fan mascots of the various talents added in a given update (a few exceptions)
The only Hololive VTubers I've ever seen or had any exposure to are Korone and Gura, unless you count Kizuna Ai (not Hololive, and 'not a person' - the gimmick being that she's supposedly an actual AI). I absolutely love HoloCure. My favorite "Survivors"-like, and that includes Vampire Survivors itself.
And to think, Jesse is getitng into this 2 WEEKS before a major update (0.7) where they are adding 9 more holomembers (hololive 3rd and 4th gens, minus Rushia), the Pekora casino, a fandom fightclub/training/racing thing, more stages, even more gimmicks, more wepaons/colabs and the massively spruced up main hub UI... It's gunna blow his mind when they releases
Shame they didn't add Rushia, ignoring her controversy, a Necromancer character would have been a lot of fun to play as also her character model was adorable and would likely have looked even cuter with this games art style.
I swear that Holocure is the most effective marketing Hololive has... It pulled me in just trying to figure out all the inside jokes and now another :P (In all honesty though it is a REALLY good game, probably my favourite vampire survivors clone out there, and the creators have stated they have no intentions of ever making money off of it in spite of hololive now having a way for indie devs to make money off of hololive fan games) Jump down the Hololore rabbit hole Jesse! You know you want to :P
Yeah. Ina is awesome. People like her are pretty rare. I mean... getting stuck on Radahn for over 3 hours with "go next" attitude instead of raging like Markiplier is not something everyone can do and that's why she's interesting to watch.
@@alesthra yeah. it's really rare for me to even have non rage moments where i'm losing for hours. *only time i did i think was against that sentinel at the start of the game and i just wanted to challenge myself *i don't play souls like games
@@ervinaspetrauskas1716 souls games are interesting. They look hard at first but...there's always an option to overlevel and cheese bosses. Remember beating father Gascoigne in Bloodborne by trapping him in place where he can't reach me. Elden ring has overpowered spells. Sure it'd frustrating to fight same boss for hours, but with little bit of exploration online, right build, skills or cheese mechanics and boss is beaten. Sure souls games aren't for everyone. People tend to rage, but point is, there's always a way to make your experience easier. Still, what's basically impossible is ..to stay calm like Ina
Wow, this is a clash of worlds i didn't expect. Ancient watcher from co-optional podcast days and currently thoroughly down the Hololive rabbit hole. Welcome Jesse, enjoy the stay!
@@Segmented Wait really?!? That's awesome! I used to watch Jesse, Dodger, and TB back in the day and in the last couple of years I fell into the vtuber rabbit hole. Seeing Jesse enamored with this game was a crossover I was not expecting but am quite chuffed by haha
@@legomacinnisincWould TB be pro vTuber in theory, based on its greater separation of streamer and viewer, reducing parasociality, or anti vTuber, based on the tendency to pander and promote fanboy/fangirlism (and of course All Fanboys Must Die). I think probably weakly pro, on the grounds it allows female streamers a way to stream without being judged on personal appearance only, as the avatar takes that role. Man, I wish we could have had a video essay from him on that, if only he hadn't been taken from us so young.
Hololive lore is a strange beast one part jrpg one part 90s wrestling gimics one part slice of life anime combined with a fandom that sits in chat and forces every random detail to mesh with the lore wether the vtuber wants it or not Also, if I wanted to recommend someone to chat about vtubers and hololive I’d say koefficiant would also be a good resource as he knows when to break the fourth wall and not and the weirdnesses of the community
@@dragb9284 lol chattini keep trying despite her saying no repeatedly much like the twins and the constant mentioning of do not touch the ears do not touch the tail lol
There's all of the vtuber stuff going on and that's fun, but honestly, I'm still impressed that HoloCure feels to me like it just improves on the Vampire Survivors gameplay formula in the right ways without having to deviate too far. I love that every character is distinct with their own unique weapon and with unique skills that don't take up slots. I like the variation in enemy patterns. I like ending on defeating a boss with its own attack patterns at the 20m mark in the default stage mode.
Jesse if you are serious about doing a lore deep dive you should talk to Koefficient or Nagzz21, both are twitch streamers who've sort of carved out that niche.
Just a little sidenote. Hololive had a night dedicated to them at an L.A. Dodgers game this past summer. Hololive is kind of a big deal. The little shark girl, Gura, has over 4M subs on UA-cam.
I kinda love that you fell into this, haha. Honestly, Koe and Naggz are good options, but you did talk to Ironmouse about doing her talk show a time back, you could talk to her too!
I still call them bullet hell for very obvious reasons, you are dodging objects that want to close in on you and hurt you and to stop this you shoot them. Don't be wonderbot and think you are more intellectual than the rest. Bullet hell originate from the space ship shooters that date all the way back to supernintendo and ALL of those had enemy ships/aliens try to crash into you physically with you trying to shoot them down.
Of the things I expected to see from Jesse, this was not one of them. But I'm very happy it happened and I hope he keeps enjoying and uploading Holocure, especially when the update comes out.
jesse and hololive is not something I expect. Imagining a collaboration is too scary. But I think Koefficient (youtuber) might be willing to explain an untrained initiate the lore of hololive
Yes!! This community is fantastic and super welcoming, hope you dive deeper and reach out to have someone on Geekenders! Calliope (the rapping reaper) has been on podcasts before so it's very much possible 😊
The monsters you fight are generally the different forms of Chat that the Holo VTubers give them, either that or the in-jokes that developed over streams. Then the attacks or upgrades are also just more jokes or references developed over the talent's careers, example Korone and her initial grasp of English was just amazing clip fodder which developed X potato and her playthrough of Limbo made the Yubi joke.
@@cryomancer2768 Yeah she was wondering how to make a good catchphrase and jokingly suggested that she demanded the fingers of her viewers and it pretty much stuck from there. The Limbo clip popularized the joke in the form of quick entertainment.
Oh boy, the forbidden wah, that's a reference. Basically, there's a bunch of WAHs. We Are Happy for example. The forbidden WAH is 'we are h***y'. Hence that face.
It's the 4th time an interpretation of the holy catchphrase's 3 letters was divinely inspired by chat. And then the 4th W.A.H. was sealed away by Ina for being NSFW.
The first 5 girls belong to the first generation of Hololive English. I'm going to describe them to you in 3 words: 💛Amelia: "Time Travel Detective" 💙Gura: "Dumb Shark Loli" 💜Ina: "Wholesome Tentacle Priestess" 🖤Calli: "Rapper Grim Reaper" 🧡Kiara: "Aggressively Gay Chicken" Actual Lore: They are basically a group of mythical beings that were being investigated by the time traveler detective Amelia Watson, Gura is a shark girl from the ancient lost civilization of atlantis, Ina is the priestess of the cult of the Ancient One (AO-chan) a creature that could destroy the universe or something, Calli is the grim reaper's apprentice but she is currently on hiatus and no longer harvest souls, lastly we have Kiara who is a phoenix running a fast food restaurant and she flirts with all the other girls, not just these four, all the members of hololive are targets for this hot, thirsty bird. If you want to know anything about a specific girl let me know, I can sum them all up in three words or give the full lore when I am not at work.
Not gonna lie, coming from someone who tries to farm leaderboard top 100 spots, you are doing pretty darn good for being new and not having full upgrades unlocked.
I am so impressed with how united the Hololive community is! Welcome! As I always tell everyone: If you have any questions, you can ask them and the community will explain them to you in the best way possible! There may be easter eggs that are difficult to explain because Hololive has been in the industry for years and one joke can snowball. If you have patience we will try our best and even look for links to current clips if we find them. Everything in the game has references both small and giant. The community loves reactions. If you want to post them, feel free. Good game and if anything we are here to help you on this journey! Good luck (you will need it)😊
Oh no It stars as “i dont know what im seeing but im just here for vibes.” And before you know it, youre neck deep in merch and signed up for japanese courses at the community college
as hilarious as that is to imagine with Jesse i don't think it will happen lol. Look at Maximillian Dood, played the Hololive fighting game when it came out, everyone in the comment sections said you are going to fall into the rabbit hole, and nothing came from it.
"Does Hololive have lore?" Yes. More than four years' worth, multiplied by over 80 individual members -- plus the CEO, A-chan, Nodoka, the various staff members, and all the clippers. Heck, even the _fans_ themselves have contributed directly to the lore via the innumerable comments in chat.
Dodger actually streamed Holocure and said that she already knew the game dev from a previous work with Strippin lol. She was hoping to get Kay on the podcast at some point
Y'know... I used to watch Jesse when he did his Skyrim playthrough many years ago and now I'm seeing him play HoloCure and it's surreal beyond belief (in a good way).
Ninomae Ina'nis intro with a "Wah, Wah, Wah!". It started just as cute sounds she makes but evolved into "We Are Happy, We Are Healthy, We Are Here!" and then the fans asked about a 4th Wah which she called forbidden and eventually became #4thWah the nsfw fanart tag on social media. It means... We Are Horny
If you want deep lore, go talk to Koefficient I'm sure he'd collab with you in an instant. The new update 0.7 is on the 15th I think and I can't wait, the casino is going to suck so much time out of my life.
Unironically I think he would have a good vibe with Calliope Mori, AND she has knowledge of the lore. Id have suggested Ame if she was still around. Edit: Amelia Watson is graduated. That character isn't around anymore. Regardless of how fans feel about it, Doob can't talk about anything related to a past life.
Ame is not graduated, the character still exists and is still part of Hololive for the purposes of collabs. It's just not the streamer's main channel anymore.
Here is some lore for Jesse. Watch the MV called Chimera by Takanashi Kiara, and press 4 to jump to a specific point in the video. I assure you its critical to the plot.

All the dudes you are killing, is basically each fanbase personified. Stage 1: Shrimps - Vtuber gawr gura, think the fanname took more hold after she made a joke "Simp? do you mean shrimp?" iirc, before that her fans were called chumbuds. (Most fan base names started of as some form of pun) Skeletons - Calliope Mori, she is a reaper, her fans are called "Deadbeats" cus she is also a musician (rapper) so, another pun. and are drawn as skeletons. The small "ghost things" - Are The fanbase of Ninomae Inanis (More known simply as "Ina") and their fanbase is called takodachis (A pun based on the japanese word for octopus (Tako) and friend (tomodachi)) so yes, while they look like ghosts they are more chibi octopus. There is obv a ton more, but ive written more than needs to be said. Edit: im only at the start of the video, so maybe some of the stuff is answered in the video itself.
"Pick Dooby." "The retired one." Damn some of your chat just be throwin' out names expecting you to know everything. I think you can maybe do a stream of HoloCure with Koefficient and you guys can chat. He can probably answer most of your questions without being confusing. This makes me wanna jump into HoloCure again, honestly. Might not be able to wait for the update at all.
Hololive DOES have lore. It's a mix of official lore for the vtubers to play into when they debut, and fan made lore and inside jokes of the community that each hololive vtuber builds over time. Hololive the company has such a fan following that even Hololive staff and the CEO have fan lore and inside jokes and are considered just as important and loved part of the community as the individual vtuber talents. Holocure is absolutely PACKED with fandom lore and inside jokes mixed in seamlessly with the more official character lore. Ninomae Ina'nis (or Ina) is a priestess of the Ancient Ones. She was an ordinary human that stumbled across the Tome of the Ancient Ones. (Summoning Ancient Eldritch horrors for dummies) and gained eldritch void and tentical powers. Her Fandom are called "Tako's" meaning octopus, referencing the tentacles. Ina is an artist (amazing artist!) That did commissions before joining Hololive. She has a background in, let's say risqué anime drawings and her fandom (Takos) are known to be mischievous pervs who share a lot of NSFW art in her art tag. WAH is a catchphrase (or sound) that Ina and her fans use a lot that stands for "We Are Here" There are four different "WAH's" We Are Here We Are Happy We Are Hungry And the "Forbiden 4th WAH" We Are Horny Ina's goals are World Dom-INA-tion And furthering appreciation for the comedic genius that is puns that cross language barriers.
Ina's fans are called Takodachis individually actually which is a portmanteau of Tako(Octopus) and Tomodachi(friend) while as a group they're part of the Tentacult(She's very Punny)
It’s hilarious to hear Jesse talk about vtuber concepts and asking if that’s what a character can be. The answer is yes, vtubing has developed into a weird mix of live-streaming, pro-wrestling and anime with each vtuber basically choosing how much of each aspect they want to include into the whole presentation.
I remember around 2018 I saw the vtuber boom starting up and I thought I'd never get into them, then the pandemic happened and I discovered HoloLive and never looked back ;)
I'm glad that this game is getting more eyes on it not just from hololive or vtuber fans because apart from being a vtuber centered game its really REALLY well made! Also I'm just glad hololive is spreading even more!
Can't wait for Lil' JC to hit the HoloEN girls with the BAM 😎 Also, the easiest way to explain Vtubers is Jesse is pro wrestling. It's early 2001. Hololive is WWF. Nijisanji is WCW. Vshojo is ECW. The whole thing is about kayfabe brother.

Shortest explanation I can manage for those unfamiliar;
Vtubers are simply streamers (or content creators) who use a digital persona instead of a face cam.
For more individual specific information:
HoloMyth (english gen1):
Mori Calliope (aka Calli or Dad) is "the grim reaper's apprentice". (I highly recommend checking out "Off with their heads" and "End of a Life" for two very different examples of her original music)
Ninomae Ina'nis (aka Ina) is a "priestess of the Ancient Ones".
Her fans are the "teamates".
this is a great summary.

People are begging to pay Kay, but he refuses, the utter bastard..
I was actually disappointed when I bought vampire survivors after playing Holocure, I was hoping for more control of the character besides movement.
@@oreohunter7798 I got Vampire Survivors first but after playing Holocure I can't really go back. Holocure lotterally ruined the genre for me. I just wish I could give the dev money but I respect the hell out of him for not wanting to be payed for it.
It's called bullet heaven, but okay.

I swear that Holocure is the most effective marketing Hololive has... It pulled me in just trying to figure out all the inside jokes and now another :P (In all honesty though it is a REALLY good game, probably my favourite vampire survivors clone out there, and the creators have stated they have no intentions of ever making money off of it in spite of hololive now having a way for indie devs to make money off of hololive fan games)

Koe or Nagzz are the best options
There's all of the vtuber stuff going on and that's fun, but honestly, I'm still impressed that HoloCure feels to me like it just improves on the Vampire Survivors gameplay formula in the right ways without having to deviate too far. I love that every character is distinct with their own unique weapon and with unique skills that don't take up slots. I like the variation in enemy patterns. I like ending on defeating a boss with its own attack patterns at the 20m mark in the default stage mode.
Yeah its such an accomplishment
Jesse if you are serious about doing a lore deep dive you should talk to Koefficient or Nagzz21, both are twitch streamers who've sort of carved out that niche.
Their also funny creators on their own merits, especially Nagzz, Koe is more pigeonholed into Fighting games but luckily he's expanding.
Just a little sidenote. Hololive had a night dedicated to them at an L.A. Dodgers game this past summer. Hololive is kind of a big deal. The little shark girl, Gura, has over 4M subs on UA-cam.
I'd be shocked (and slightly disappointed) if no one in the chat described Yagoo as "the Yoshi-P of hololive"
I kinda love that you fell into this, haha. Honestly, Koe and Naggz are good options, but you did talk to Ironmouse about doing her talk show a time back, you could talk to her too!
Mousey is a big Holo fan, very wholesome
I am so on board for Jesse discovering vtuber content. I unironically think he would love them if he gave them a chance.
I genuinely think that HoloCure is the best bullet heaven game. The specials and how different everyone plays is great.

Oh this sweet innocent boy just throwing open Pandora's box like it's nobody's business.
Nah the yubi joke was from the scuffed debut stream that became a splatoon let's play with gamers.

💜Ina: "Wholesome Tentacle Priestess"

🧡Kiara: "Aggressively Gay Chicken"

They are basically a group of mythical beings that were being investigated by the time traveler detective Amelia Watson, Gura is a shark girl from the ancient lost civilization of atlantis, Ina is the priestess of the cult of the Ancient One (AO-chan) a creature that could destroy the universe or something, Calli is the grim reaper's apprentice but she is currently on hiatus and no longer harvest souls, lastly we have Kiara who is a phoenix running a fast food restaurant and she flirts with all the other girls, not just these four, all the members of hololive are targets for this hot, thirsty bird.

Yes. More than four years' worth, multiplied by over 80 individual members -- plus the CEO, A-chan, Nodoka, the various staff members, and all the clippers.

WAH is a catchphrase (or sound) that Ina and her fans use a lot that stands for "We Are Here"
There are four different "WAH's"
We Are Here
We Are Happy
We Are Hungry
And the "Forbiden 4th WAH"
We Are Horny
Ina's goals are World Dom-INA-tion
And furthering appreciation for the comedic genius that is puns that cross language barriers.
ALSO we didn't even get into music!
Talents have original songs (sometimes with MV's) that explore their character lore further.
