I use my steamdeck in desktop mode 90% of the time. It's a great media/browsing PC.
Also emulation station looks great on a bigger display from atari all the way up to switch games 😝
KDE Plasma?
Had to sell my gaming PC since I'm unemployed and have bills so now the steam deck is my PC and it's amazing what it can do. I'll miss playing Fortnite on PC because I have the series s and I'm reminded how trash games look and how crazy the aa is on console lmao. Jesus it's horrible
Steam deck is probably one of the most important inventions in a decade for pc gamers besides an SSD. It’s amazing how flexible this device is for its price. I owned one since the beginning and as a tech geek I still get butterflies powering it on knowing how much you can do with this little guy. The Gamemode and Desktop OS is nearly perfect and every aspect of it makes sense.
Next interation for Valve to incorporate on SD2 would be:
-Game standby mode like Xbox Series on all games
- Support Ray tracing
-Ability to plug in an external GPU
-Better battery life
-Better sounding speakers (have an additional set of micro subwoofer(s) )
- Have an virtual surround upscaler similar to Windows Sonic for Headphones
ive been using my steam deck as a desktop pc for about 7 months now, and it has completely replaced my windows desktop in some areas. For basic video, web and email, this thing is a delight to use, and after some months I feel like i understand the OS a bit more than Win10. The only gripe is i wish i had more performance for other heavier games such as Uncharted and cyberpunk, but as is im happy with it, i have a portable gaming machine with emulators and steam games and a great home pc when docked.
I'm not a PC gamer but I'm looking for a way to play some games more discreetly during downtimes at work. Would a Steam Deck connected to my 2nd monitor play things like Elder Scrolls Online or Fallout 76 well? Would they run the same as or similar to the way the do one Xbox One/Series S?
5:05 one small detail there: Netflix only stream in 720p to web browsers, as Louis Rossmann pointed in a recent video. But, there are extensions for Ffox and Chrome to force 1080p on Netflix.
If you use the PS5 DualSense you can activate gyro and turn it's sensitivity down to 25% for fine tuning your aim and manipulating the mouse pointer, even in desktop mode. It's very nice!
What is lovely about the Steam Deck and Steam Deck OLED is that its essentially a Linux machine that you can do all sorts of IT stuff. Ultimately it can also be a good business expense for developers who already have a Windows machine and want both a Linux machine and a nice handheld for gaming off-hours. Kudos to Valve!
Honestly was contemplating on the OLED, and you’ve just made me pull the trigger! Thank you.
@@servare2599desktop experience used to be worse because Steam Deck wouldn't wake up from sleep or would lock up if you removed dock/cable.
It is working better now but occasionally will act up with sleep or cable unplugging
SteamDeck is a pretty good console and PC as it's good at being all in one device.
I actually do use my Steam Deck as PC substitute for work when traveling and when I need to work during blackouts. I hook it up to an 14" LapDock (Nexdock Touch) and it becomes an usable semi-portable machine for doing real work (in my case - Linux stuff, some coding and devops). Since my work machines are virtualized, all I have to do is transfer their VM images over to an external SSD and fire up VMware on my Steam Deck. Runs beautifully.
I also very commonly use my deck as a digital companion for browsing the web and watching media. The new OLED screen works really well for media playback. Well, since I'm a Linux geek, I also sometimes do hop on to the terminal to do some light admin work.
Sounds like it’s a full on cyberdeck for you lol
Strongly considering getting one of these for my daughter as a starter gaming pc
2:51 a wild black square appears (before then but it’s most visible when your hand is in front)
I thought this was fun too. It blocked the steam deck logo for a bit but wasn’t that distracting. I’m like yes, protect…whatever it is you got there. Didn’t want a face reveal? Fair, haha
Yesterday I got my new monitor (Dell S2722DZ). It is a "conferencing monitors" so it has a HD webcam, mic, speakers, and an RJ45 port on it. I got it for this for this exact reason. It works great. My setup is SUPER CLEAN!!! Only 1 visible cable from the monitor to the Steam Deck.
I for one LOVE these new USB C monitors because USB 3.2 Gen 2 has so much bandwidth it makes your monitor your I/O center. NO MORE OF MY 6'4" BUTT CRAWLING UNDER A DESK!!!
Also docked is a great way to play strategy games with mouse and keyboard. And you can play CP 2077 at 30 FPS with decent image quality and higher than low settings. FSR 2.1 at balanced is enough. You can run CP2077 navite 800p at a mix of low and medium settings 40 fps with dips into the 30s due to cpu constraints. In fact the OLED has a bit better 1% lows as the faster memory helps CPU bound scenarios. But I prefer the on the go experience on the deck OLED. That ridiculous OLED HDR display is crazy and makes the game look awesome. It feels like raytracing is enabled. It isn't but those blacks and the play between light and shadow... Awesome.
What about games like Civ 6, Age of Empires or Crusader Kings 3?
@@BleachO the deck plays those games nicely. You don't need to connect into second monitor (though you can).but for the strategy games yeah, makes them play better.
That's what scares me though.. come next year, CP is going to be mid tier settings graphics wise.
Could only mean a SteamDeck2? (or perhap the long waied for Steam Console) .
Nice to see content about the Linux desktop :D
Your videos helps alot
If they had added for external GPU, I would have picked this up, but I'm happy with my LED one and let's see what deck 2 brings
I mostly enjoy the Steam desktop experience, but the one major pain-point for me is getting setup for file-sharing services like G Drive & iCloud.
Once docked there's no difference than the LCD which I love, too early for disparity in Steam devices
there is a slight performance boost due to the change of internals, but its like 5% at most
@@Cyrus_Nagisa yea it's little impact to gameplay, I'll upgrade once version 2 comes along, I was tempted at the upgrade but I don't play it enough to throw another few hundred at it
He says this at the beginning of the video
Steam Deck - 24fps
Rog Ally - 60fps
@@DonaldHendleyBklynvexRecordsvery fair and wise. I upgraded because honestly it is the only place I game anymore due to tine constraints. I was thankful today as I had a 3 hour commute. Managed to play RDR 2 for most of it.
damn the desk setup in the thumbnail is *CLEAN*
To the best of my knowledge steam deck does not have superuser privileges activated, unless done by the user.
This means that you don't really need to use the terminal anyway.
The app packages are also different, they are flatpacks which means that installing and uninstalling works similar to Android apk's
Best Regards
Flatpacks are pretty nice. I also like Appimage and Snaps. They make installing and using apps on Linux easier than Windows.
If you're going couch instead of desk and not planning on using MKB for playing the games and instead for menu navigation (typing and mouse selection) I recommend getting one of those keyboards with a touchpad like the Logitech K400
My main gaming pc is a Manjaro (Arch) Linux based PC so the desktop mode looks basically just like my regular pc desktop. And trust me, once you learn Linux you wont really miss Windows much. So much faster/more stable.
My easy anti cheat games though😭😭
I've tried so many times. But truly working on Linux is harder than gaming. Try editing PDF files. Or connecting Google drive. And many more things. It sucks cause I really love Linux and have made an attempt to change many times.
@@mikehunthunt8269 That's all on the devs though, they could whitelist proton in their anti-cheat software and proton supports running lots of the kernel level DRM now. Lots of games have done it and the ones holding out have anti-Linux views esp Bungie who's ceo is blatantly anti-linux.
Manjaro... stable?
@@RASELMX it can be...... Sometimes lol. Doesn't help that it is a rolling release.
I think I'm using my steamdeck more as a desktop than actually as a handheld. And when I use it as a handheld mostly with AR Glasses. After installing EmuDeck I don't even have a switch anymore
It’s ok for basic operations, game streaming on a big monitor can be a good idea also.
The memory bump on the oled really helped out with forza at 1080p. I remember not that long ago trying that on my lcd and it was basically stuck at 900p and 60 wasnt really an option
🤔 I'm thinking on buying it this month and having as substitute for my PC seams a good idea. I have a desktop, is big and take a lot of space. I have a work/study laptop with Linux. But for gaming is my desktop, having the steam deck is the perfect solution
yea I'm planning on that too, but because I am moving a lot over the next few months so carrying a whole as$ rig is a bit much especially when taking flights. so with a deck I can keep progress in my games and when i need to i can use a similar setup to this to touch up the CV while hunting for jobs and just browsing. Plus I can connect it to a TV and use it like a switch... handy when some tvs in airbnb are not smart so with the help of the deck or switch it can do a little more than play static. The only thing I am worried about is not being able to play the games that steam deck cannot currently support but I am hoping that changes when you enable it to dual boot so you can run windows on the device, The good thing about Linux is that many people have pretty much done everything anyone would want to do on it and have put tutorials up on how to do them too.
@@SIR1U5 has being 2 months that I got my steam deck. I know that not everyone is the same, but for me is just perfect. I don’t even torn on my pc anymore 😊
Isn’t perfect. But is perfect for me 🥰
This is me whenever I travel. I have a nice usb c powered monitor I hook up to it and I just break out a wireless mouse and keyboard and can kick back in a hotel room and surf to my heart's content, and when I feel like a game, I can just hop back over to game mode and fire up one of the thousands I've collected over time.
Im thinking of getting a SteamDeck and use a LapDock, as a quasi laptop for on the go and studies. Do you have a video on that setup? What do you think?
I play guitar through mine, works great, there's a really good linux amp called guitarix, works better than windows as you can listen to youtube and guitar at the same time through headphones, I actually have youtube, guitar and a metronome all through headphones :)
I'm informed. Thank you for this piece of information, I have things in mind for the future, and guitar is one of them. I have wondered how compatible linux is with to use alongside different hobbies
Looks like I have project to do. Damn I love Linux. Love you too for this comment. I’m more excited than a lion in a field full of slow Giselle’s
Does it work with an interface?
That OLED screen is amazing, I absolutely love the oled version
I gotta be honest, my docked experience with the Deck has been pretty mixed. Certain UI elements don't funtion well with a mouse and VRR causes the screen to go black. A weird bit of input delay is also introduced only once a game launches. Docked mode works, it just doesn't seem to be fully mature yet. And yes, I have the official dock.
Try going into the compositor settings in desktop mode and settings it to "prefer balanced between performance and latency" if it's not already set to that
Myne was totally fine before 3.5. I dont know why the update caused me so many problems. Kinda holding off till an update. I tried straight display port and hdmi high speed cables.
I think i've go the same dock. It was half off when I was on amazon during cyber monday sales
Can I use browser to watch hdr contents by steam deck oled? Because i don’t see hdr option in the UA-cam
On my next trip I was thinking I’ll leave my 17” laptop at home and just pack my steam deck and ipad. Usually just take care of everything on my ipad now but some websites don’t display right (need to pay bills). Hopefully will work fine using the steam deck as a pc. I also saw you can get a capture dongle and use the ipad as a monitor too 😮.
do you have usb flash drives running in desktop mode without docking stations and hubs in steam deck oled?
Thanks for an interesting video. I had a Steam Deck when they first released but sent it back as I realised I woudn't use it enough as a gaming device. Having something I could use as replacement or extra desktop device didn't cross my mind at the time, I may look at one again, thanks!
I have a Steam Deck OLED and a desktop PC. I'm curious though, how well will a KVM switch work with one of these? I'd like to be able to use both my desktop PC and my Steam Deck with the same keyboard, mouse and monitors without having to swap out cables all the time
If I’m planning to only use a device in dock mode to play local multiplayer 4 player steam games, which should I pick between Asus rog ally or a steam deck? It will be docked to a 4k tv. Thank you
On the Deck it be nice to have Steam Deck with 10TB or more for more Games and apps...
Thank you for this video it's really helpful. I also use my deck which I just got two days ago as a PC. I was wondering your opinion on security with regards to doing business online I don't just browse I will be doing financial stuff and what not. So I was wondering if there is some equivalent of Nord or avast or any of those that would protect information while online.
What is that keyboard and mouse model? can't find it in the link that you shared
Awesome! I still wish for nVidia to do something simillar but with DLSS
They will never nvidia is a bad company just like intel. Amd is too but they are the underdog so they are a little icer.
Amazing!
The Steam Deck might do more for bringing desktop Linux onto peoples desks than any other initiative ever did.
Honestly, i've been using my ROG Ally as my desktop pc for a few weeks now as i've been using it more often. Everyday use and light games i can run as normal on my main monitor. I love the direction these handhelds are going and i cant wait to see what we get over the coming years ^^
fsr is not available for desktop mode right, but theres a way to bypass it using the "Gamescope" commands, would you be able to try it?
i love how it connects to the TV and able to play it similar to a switch. if only it had a bit more power.
Hey man, I’m kinda torn between building a PC or just buying a Steam Deck right now, could you please expand a little on the power thing? I’m a college student and I already have a 2020 MacBook Air, so I most likely won’t be doing any work on the Deck and it’ll be solely for gaming/leisure in general. I don’t care much for the newest AAA games, mostly way older titles (like, late 80s through 2010s) and indies. Do you recommend I buy the Steam Deck or save up more for a more powerful PC?
@@eternalfaeri1415 if you are not concerned about portability, I would suggest getting a PC. But if you want to play your games anywhere and anytime, then steam deck is a good choice. It really just depends on your preference.
One thing I haven’t figured out is how to print! Can create a VM in boxes as a workaround, but if I want to print in desktop for SteamOS, no good.
Great video and very informative but I could not get over how someone named a piece of software Gimp LMAO!!😂😂
When mh wild is capable to play it on steamdeck oled i will consider buying
Woow i can use my poor eyes to look at this awesome tech
Yep, that’s why after I bought my OLED model, I decided tokeep my LED model in docked mode all the time
Wow never been this early for a video
Would a monitor be way better for gaming and overall performance compared to docking to a TV? I have a pretty cheap basic UHD Samsung TV and I notice gaming on the steam deck itself is waaay better but of course I wanna play on a bigger screen sometimes
I’m new to the PC world and the whole spec/resolution/fps kinda stuff but I think a monitor would probably be better in general than a TV even if the TV is a super high end model.
I haven’t had any luck getting higher than 1080p on Netflix. 4k UA-cam works no issue but can’t get streaming services higher.
I saw that you own Far Cry 1. can you please tell me if you can run it at 1080p30 on max (absolute highest) settings? if that's not too intensive what about 1440p30? thank you.
I play cyberpunk 2077 at 1080p steam deck preset, with fsr performance that gives me 30fps, I like to push docked steam deck gaming to the limit
How do you do a Triple Monitor set up? I tried before but it didn't work out
Hey eta, can you try an os calls windeckos, its steamdeck ui on windows
This is my main case use for the steam deck. I got the 64 GB LCD version and I can run halo infinite Apex legends rocket league all above 90 frames per second a 1080P
It’s actually kind of insane . I only take it off the dock to bring it to work where I play on lunch rarely or when my girl is watching TV and wants me to sit on the couch with her lol then it’s dead cells time.
My man what is ur graphics settings for halo infinite?
Wow apex legends above 90fps a 1080p!! How??
Wow! That's crazy.
desktop mode has no HDR yet, only game mode has HDR currently and on the LCD Deck is this only working on a external display due to the LCD screen being SDR
Awesome if you like looking up Linux wiki articles which you have to follow to do anything general purpose
Amazing video! I would like to point out something. I haven't had a steamdeck yet, but I see that the simplicity of using linux you mentioned that valve did a great job. However most of the points you mentioned are due to the KDE desktop environment and not valve. I think it is actually a good thing valve chosen KDE! Most people will find it close to the windows experience and its has so much features baked in.
I'll be honest, I prefer Ubuntu's Gnome DE over KDE but I do like KDE Plasma DE too. It's just I'm sooooo used to Gnome interface + it looks sexy. I think Gnome might be more user friendly because of the layouts. Just an opinion. Also, I hope Valve lets us pick our DE for desktop mode when they release the official Steam OS3 Desktop version outside of deck hardware.
Can I play all games in desktop mode on 49 inch monitor? Also can I play epic games on this console?
If I put the sdcard from the drone to the steam deck, can I play 4k h265 10 bit video with 150mbps bitrate with some tool?
Remember when connecting using a dock have the monitor off then turn on the monitor after you are connected
We could do this with the og steam deck my guy
What Logitech keyboard model is that? I've never seen that version.
As soon as Steam Link can connect a Quest 2 headset to the Steam Deck in SteamOS mode, there'll be no reason for me to keep a Windows install around. The fact it can do VR at all is astonishing b ut the catch is you must wire the Steam Deck to a router in order for it to be reliable. I run into too many issues doing everything wirelessly and I put up with that on other hardware, but the STeam Deck just loses connection too much.
Gosh all these handhelds. I think, for me, the Legion Go is my choice only for the flexibility of adding an eGPU. I already own the two consoles plus a MacBook and iPad Pro so this would be more for PC gaming on my 1440 ultrawide. Who knows, maybe I would drop one or two of the consoles in the process. Call it, an introductory experiment. 😉
You mention freesync during the video. Are you sure this docking station is compatible? I ask because most of the docking stations sold on Amazon are not. As an example, even the “top of the line” Jsaux HB1201 RGB docking station is not compatible with Freesync / VRR.
Do you by chance have a list of the settings you use for Forza Horizon 5 to get it to hold near 60? Mine seems to be more or less around 45 :(
Same
any ideas if it runs WOW retail and classic well in desktop
"how many tabs do you have open right now?"
Sir, I feel attacked.
*at least 7*
Since when can Firefox play HDR UA-cam videos? Anyway, it's cool VRR works with external screen.
I've had several problems with the Deck not waking from sleep, or the UI becoming unresponsive in desktop mode, that I've never had with the LCD model.
I think it was the 3.5 update. Myne was totally fine and now its all janked
I am happy with my Onexplayer 2 & 1. Steam Deck is just far more away features, that could not be found.
So you go through the point of enabling the screen on the steam deck, but then black it out so we can't see it. Why? Im confused.
would you guys consider the Steam deck OLED (in dock mode) better than the PS5? took a long break from gaming and not really sure what to purchase
No way
yes mom I need it for powerpoints and homework
Is that monitor OLED for parity? ;-)
I would absolutely use it as a desktop PC if it Linux had a decent RDP app. Such a shame the current ones are so unreliable
@michaellee316 what is a "RDP" app?
I'd try "no machine"
Connectwise or TeamViewer are not enough?
@@josefknechtable unfortunately not. Work allows RDP connections only

Does either Forza horizon still crash after 15-30 minutes on the Deck?
Can I use my gamepass subscription on it?
Can you use nexus mods on the steam deck oled?
Keep in mind, Rog Ally can do this too
Why is there a black box overlay over the steam decks screen?
4:10 Firefox support hardware video acceleration on Linux and Chrome does not, that's why
Did you ever try using a handheld like the Steamdeck for coding by any chance?
I did for a few months. It’s doable depending on the language. JavaScript/ts/Java was easy to set up, but rust was not.
Holding off to see if it gets Windows support. There are a bunch of games that are Windows only that need it for the stupid anti-cheat systems added into some games.
you can do this with the regular version of the steamdeck as well lol
How does CS or TF2 work on this machine with monitor? Has anyone tried it? 60fps locked?
Seeing comments mentioning theres no diff between oled and og for docking.
Is this something he says later word for word in the video or is this just yall commenting?
If he doesnt make the statement that the og cant but this one can like the comments are saying.
Perhaps you might just be misconstruing the title.
Just seems a bit off a guy pumping out videos constantly on stuff he loves (aka mini pc form factors) would make an oversight like that.
We all make mistakes doe. So.
Just wanted to also say. The title makes sense for people who have never heard of the steam deck OG.
while we might be in the tech space.
As MKBHD once said. We are unfortunately in the minority here so the title wording isnt necessarily a bad thing.
@@MenaceInc now your perspective makes a little more sense than the others I was reading. I will say doe considering they did 1) did not raise the prices and 2)if they find that video they will be met with the oled optioms too on the steam page now if they decide to purchase one.
As long as there wasn't a .
How...you say... sponsor feeling
"Oh this oled now does x10000 more fps etc etc" crap. Scripted in.. this video at least shows the originals features weren't tempered with.
Something could been changed under the hood.
From something like the # of displays supported or resolution that someone is gonna find out eventually. So vids like these are gonna be nice for that kinda info.
As long as ofc.
They don't contain the things I was reading like
"Now you can dock unlike last gen"
Or similar statements.
Have a great rest of your day doe. :)
And thanks for sharing a logical perspective.
"NothinG Gonna Stop us from connectinG to an external displaY"...that's a dare devil's move 😎
how about battery
i think i buy Handheld PC for the future, cause i think the future use handheld like this
Steam deck could process PCVR, something like half life alyx?
Had no idea the Steam Deck could do useful stuff! Neat!
Cool. Steam Deck so versatile. Gonna hold off upgrading to the OLED since current SD is so good.
There is no computational difference just a 90hrz oled that runs cooler.. there is absolutely no need for a oled if you have a LCD model there the exact same in functionality.
Can u do it with rog ally
All games I bought on steam are in the home screen of the desktop mode. If I erase them from there, will they disapear from Steam library?
No
