    Hi guys,
I am aware that in this video I haven't addressed Black Lives Matter - which isn't something I am overlooking at all. I will talk about it in next week's video, but wanted to first write down some thoughts. Watching the news unfold, and the very eloquent conversations that come up online around this has made a few things very clear to me:
    - To stay silent is not ok. We do LIVE on social media, so to try and separate that from 'real life' is not an excuse. It's part of our everyday life, and is the catalyst of change and movements as things have the chance go go viral and be seen my millions.
    - The first step in speaking about this (for me, and many others), needs to accepting how much I HAVE NOT done in the past, due to a position of privilege. This has to be a journey of accepting the place you stand in now, and looking at how to improve it.
    - To encourage a community that can educate each others - I have seen so many people share links/ideas of ways to help, here are a few:

I haven't read the book, but the series of normal people is very powerful. I grew up in rural Ireland and there is a culture of not speaking your mind and hiding emotions. It's an incredible depiction of that.

I just wanted to leave a comment and say that I love your videos. Like honestly Lizzy they bring me so much joy I can’t describe. They feel so comforting and relaxing to me, it’s actually how I strive my videos to be. Your style is effortless and beautiful. I dont know if this is important to write but you are the only youtuber besides booktubers that I watch and to me that says something. Keep up doing what you are doing because its so great. Also Hosseini is just the best! Lots of love.

I could have sworn you read those two Sally Rooney books a couple years ago and included them in your vlog - you and your mom both were reading them either in Italy or before going - ??? I thought I found out about them from you! I get so many ideas for what to wear and read and how to furnish and decorate my condo from you so THANK YOU!! you are my favorite you tube person to watch, for years and years now. :) :) hugs from Los Angeles where there is nonstop honking and sirens out the window currently. I've read Normal People twice and I would say I loved it even more the second time around. The first what stood out to me was the responsibility and politics of love. How we as a generation find ourselves in more amorphous relations without knowing how to navigate them. Then how we feel pressure to find "normal" love or someone who fits societal expectations. The second time around I took my time and appreciated how Rooney created small vignettes of their lives and just how they both exhibit similar traits in terms of communication (Marianne is frank, but comes off curt; Connell reticent and maudlin), yet can't understand the others' style. I can understand why it may have felt Marianne's character wasn't flushed out, but i wonder how it may have disrupted the focal point of their relationship. I felt really close to Marianne as a character as someone who didn't find their self until unversity, but then found a sticky relationship that continued for way too long. It made me nostalgic (not for the shit, but the freedom and fearlessness)! I think you may appreciate the tv series Marianne more than book. i haven't read the other two, but am absolutely interested!

Hi Lizzy, always love your vlogs. I was just thinking that maybe you can give a chance to smaller, indipendent book shops to find some more books to read. I feel like a good reader like you could be looking for something new/different than the more known titles (maybe some black authors..? idk) (i think i made some mistakes with the english oops)

I think its great that you want to join the conversation around black lives matter and have included some links in your description. However, I don’t think it’s right to tag your video using this hashtag when nothing in your video relates to it? Not sure its right to have this video come up with the abundance of others attempting to address the matter.

Sorry sorry sorry! You’re 100% right. No excuse but I’ve never used a # on UA-cam before and I didn’t realise it put something in a certain category in that way. Have taken that out so it just stays in my subscribers boxes. Thank you xx

Lizzy Hadfield please don’t apologise. I think it is ok to tag it. I’ve been disappointed by content creators who are remaining silent on such an important issue. People know how social media works - they would think to check the description box. You clearly state you are discussing it in your next video and share initial thoughts. That might be enough to flag people who maybe don’t know about you but want to hear your views. It’s all down to opinion but I don’t think you misused the hashtag at all. I’m encouraged that you are using your voice and platform to raise and share awareness about such an important matter.

I can recommend that you read Atonement by Ian McEwan if you haven't already, it's brilliant I think you'd really like it! I'm glad you liked The Kite Runner and you should def read A Thousand Splendid Suns but I wouldn't bother with And The Mountains Echoed, also by Khaled Hosseini - this did nothing for me and just didn't compare to the other two

Love the book talks I haven't read Normal people, only seen the show. But once there was like 5 minutes left of the last episode I couldn't watch any more cause I was that pissed off. For the same reason really. (SPOILERS) --->
They throw so much on Marianne, so much trauma, repeated - but it's never resolved. Connell never helps her. But when he goes through the depression she helps him, and makes a big deal out of thanking her. Then the scene with the brother and the abuse, Connell threatens the brother, but what about her? The episode just ends. I know the books apparantly delves more into the bdsm-themes, but in the show I just see it as a way for her to cope since she can't believe someone (except Connell) would actually love and care for her. Any way, I DID like it, l love how they showed the relationship between them, I came to care for both of them a lot. But I had hoped more since it was written by a female author, and Rooney wrote the script as well.

Literally just finished A Fine Balance a couple days ago after coming across it randomly on my parents’ bookshelf! Even though it’s so harrowing, I can’t remember reading a book of that length as quickly as I read A Fine Balance. I’m still thinking about it now, and am struggling to get through my next read because I can feel the lack of richness. I’m missing Ishvar, Om, Maneck and Dina so much. Glad to find another fan!

I've read "And the Mountains Echoed" by Hosseini and just recently started "A Thousand Splendid Suns" I was keeping "The Kite Runner" for last since I've seen the movie. A couple good books by William O Douglas are "Beyond the High Himalayas" and "Strange Lands and Friendly People". They are set in 1949-1951, but they are good background books to Central Asian politics and the people in general. I found "Beyond the High Himalayas" from watching Hithcock's "Rear Window". At the end of the movie, James Stewart is sitting in bed with his broken legs, and they zoom in on the book he reading, so I looked it up, and saw that it was a real book, and ordered it. One of my favorites now.

Finally, someone who has the same opinion of ‘Normal People’ as I do. I hear others rant and rave but I also felt that Marianne’s character was unexplored compared to Connell, which is weird coz it’s a very character driven plot.
I was reading ‘A Secret History’ and got halfway through but I’ve had to take a break. It’s bleak and Donna Tartt has a habit of slowing the pace down too much halfway through her books. I pushed through with ‘The Goldfinch’ and loved that novel, especially with my art history background, but I haven’t found the same flow with ‘A Secret History’. Just something to bear in mind with it! ☺️
