Hurricane IRMA - Naples, Florida - September 10, 2017

- On the morning of Sunday, September 10, 2017 Hurricane IRMA made landfall in the lower Florida Keys as a category four on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale. The center of the storm crossed Cudjoe Key with maximum sustained winds of 130 mph (115 kt) and a minimum central pressure of 931 mb (27.49 in). After passing the Florida Keys, IRMA made a second landfall in southwest Florida, over Marco Island and Naples, as a category three, with sustained winds of 115 mph (100 kt) and a minimum central pressure of 936 mb (27.64 in).
From September 9th - 10th, storm chasers Michael Laca, Greg Nordstrom, Devin Thomas, Dylan Federico, and Brant Beckman intercepted Hurricane IRMA in Naples, Florida (26.14207 N / 81.79721 W)
Between 3:45 pm and 4:35 pm EDT our location was directly impacted by the hurricane's intense northern eyewall, which was characterized by exceptionally turbulent bursts of violent winds. While the highest normalized surface winds, in our immediate vicinity, were sustained (1 min) around 100 mph (85 kt), peak (3 sec) gusts were likely in the 130-140 mph (115-120 kt) range, coming in frequent, explosive bursts which engulfed everything in blinding whiteouts of wind and rain. A peak gust of 142 mph (123 kt) was reported from a MESONET site at the Naples Municipal Airport, 1.5 miles east of our location, and a gust to 130 mph (115 kt) was reported at the Marco Island Police Department. Post-storm damage surveys have indicated that IRMA's eyewall was likely producing a number of transient mesovortex features, which may have resulted in some of the more extreme wind values, and exceptional turbulence observed.
My location experienced a 40 minute calm (from 4:40 pm to 5:20 pm EDT) during the passage of the hurricane's eye. At 4:53 pm EDT, shortly after the onset of the calm conditions, I recorded a minimum pressure of 938.7 mb (27.72 in). A minimum pressure of 936.9 mb (27.67 in) was reported from a storm spotter on Marco Island. - Наука та технологія
It is amazing how adapted the palm trees are to these storms because everything could be destroyed but the palms still remain and look like nothing happened!
Because palm trees adapted through evolution to these storms, coconuts being a prime example
Sometimes if the winds are too strong, the looks of the palms can be ruined.
The term Palm Tree in itself is kind of a oxymoron too because really they are just a giant type of grass/herb like bamboo and sugar cane. Very fibrous, they absolutely suck when you have to dig near them. Root ball is insanely strong and flexible like the rest of the tree.
@@tacticalmattress I also heard that part of their roots are actually out of the ground. Don’t know if that’s true.
Las palmeras aguantan pero después de un huracán aparecen un poco dañadas
It is amazing to see how palm trees have adapted over the centuries to withstand that much wind without snapping in half
They've always been like that...are you serious

Amazing work, Michael. My mom lives in Naples. She's fine, her house took a beating and we can see why. The wind alone is jaw dropping. Thank you for this documentation. Wow!
Thanks so much!!! I’m glad your mom is OK, and hopefully the repairs can be done quickly!

You and icyclone are my favourite tropical cyclone chasers, because you know how to punch an eyewall! Irma was truly the strongest storm for the Antilles since the great hurricane from 1780. Luckily it weakened. If not this would have been unimaginable! Great footage!
Thank you so much! Punching the eyewall is fun... especially when they punch back, lol. And yes, Irma was truly a storm for the ages... as was Maria. The Antilles really took a beating this year.
I could never stop being amazed by the destructive rage of hurricanes.

This is a beautiful video...thanks for doing this and posting to the world. I shot my own clips in Golden Gate City while at home with the family. Minutes 3-6 bring back memories of our "2nd chance at life" moments in '04 Hurricane Charley's eyewall in downtown Punta Gorda. Charley was much smaller but believe it or not it's eyewall was significantly more intense than Irma in Naples. Thanks again brother....fantastic clip!!
Thanks so much for the comment. Glad you liked the video.
Bro Charley was INSANE in Punta Gorda, I don't think Ian was even as bad there.
There was a gust recorded of 174 mph in Punta Gorda I believe.

What a way to return from a hiatus! Irma was certainly not messing around, and you captured her fury with prestige and professionalism not commonly found in this day and age; wonderful footage!
Thank you so much!!! I'm really happy you enjoyed the clip... and thank you for the awesome comment!
You're absolutely welcome Michael!
I rode out Hurricane Harvey in 2017 and these storms are something else. Many large Royal Palms almost two feet or more round, were snapped in half. I have respect for these powerhouses.
Alot of mine in Irma were either snapped, stripped clean of their bark, or completely defoliated.
All the other trees just couldn't survive.
Neither could that house, moved out due to the damage and the fact that I literally didn't have a roof over my head.
Considering how big Royal Palms get that’s surprising to hear how they snapped unless they were rotten in the centre from a disease etc that was waiting for such winds ti snap them as they are usually very tolerant of these strong winds and allow the branches to rip off easily to protect the bud
@@filledwithvariousknowledge1065 Yeah, usually they uproot.
I doubt those were actually royals.
Royals don't grow from where harvey hit.

Once again, fantastic job of capturing the best of what "Irma" had to offer that fateful day; which was indeed "amazing" as you so eloquently stated (and can be heard near the end of my short video clip). IDK if you'll see this comment, after all this time. But I just wanted to say, my beloved mother-in-law, who passed just a few years ago, lived in Naples. We were so worried about her, during Irma. And seeing this footage, really brings home just how scary it was. We knew she was safe in her neighborhood clubhouse, with all her friends (which was their neighborhood storm plan). But we still worried, of course, and called her several times, from the beginning of the storm, until after it passed. She was always just as cool as a cucumber. Never even seemed the least bit worried. (And she said she lost some foliage, but her home itself-somehow-sustained little damage.) Seeing this video, I have NO IDEA how she couldn't have been! I'd have been terrified! She'd lived in Naples for 30 years or more at that point, though. So I don't know if she was just used to that kind of stuff by then (the same way Midwesterners are used to tornadoes), or if she was just downplaying, because she didn't want us to worry. Maybe it was a little of both. Anyway, thank you for posting this. You reminded me of just what an amazing, strong person my late MIL really was. I miss her.
Worth all those years of waiting.
Great footage, it's impossible to look away!

No music please, just let us have a glimpse at the raw power of the hurricane.
I live mid up state in florida i stay in a mobile trailer during this hurricane and the power keep going off and on and the house is still up to this day
So when a hurricane comes it only really "pounds" an area for just a few minutes and quickly moves on? I'm just asking because it seemed like there was a stretch of time where the winds REALLY picked up but then it died down rather quickly. Was that point where the winds really picked up the actual "hurricane" itself? I'm from TN and am really fascinated by this. The sound of hurricanes is just really scary too. One of the creepiest sounds in nature to me. It's like a really creepy whistle or something.
Each hurricane is unique in many ways, but the primary factors that determine the duration of the "hurricane" are: 1. The size of the hurricane's wind field (i.e. how far out do the hurricane-force winds extend from the center); 2. The speed of the hurricane's forward motion; and 3. The observer's distance from the center of the storm. A hurricane that has a large wind field, with hurricane-force winds extending out a long distance (sometimes more than 50 miles in all directions) can affect a very large area... if the storm is also moving slowly (less than 5 mph), or becomes stationary, locations near the path of the storm's center can experience hurricane force winds for a very long period. In some of the most extreme cases, like Hurricane Betsy in 1965, some portions of the Bahamas were subjected to hurricane-force winds continuously for over 70 hours. In the case of Hurricane Irma, when it made landfall in SW Florida, the hurricane-force winds extended outward a significant distance to the east of the center, about 80 miles, but only about half that distance to the north, and there were hardly any winds of hurricane force to the south of the center. The storm was moving northward at about 12 mph. So, the net result was, at my location in Naples, with the center of the storm passing directly over my location (from south to north), prior to the passage of the calm eye, I experienced hurricane conditions for about two hours... progressively getting worse, and reaching a peak as the hurricane's northern eyewall (the area of strongest winds and heaviest rain that occurs immediately outside the calm center) moved over my area. The eyewall, being a much smaller area within the overall hurricane-force winds, only lasted for about 45 minutes. This was immediately followed by a rapid decrease in wind speed, taking about 10 minutes to get down to almost a complete calm, as the eye moved over. Once the eye passed, strong winds returned from the opposite direction, but never reached hurricane strength again, as the storm's wind field was asymmetric at that point, and the eyewall did not completely encircle the eye. Of course, my video is edited down to take you through the whole experience in only nine minutes... so, while it may seem like it's just a few minutes, in reality the duration of the destructive winds (>50 mph) was about 3-4 hours, with the peak conditions and strongest winds (>100 mph) lasting for about 45 minutes. Overall, that is still fairly quick for a hurricane (mainly due to the lack of hurricane conditions on the back side of this particular storm). On average, in a mature hurricane with a more symmetrical wind field, destructive winds will last from 10-12 hours, with full hurricane conditions lasting from 4-6 hours.
These frightening scenery make me feel the unfathomable anxiety
Even though there were a lot of victims out there that suffered due to this hurricane impact and I am so sorry for that... Watching storm videos makes me sleepy somehow don't know why...🤔

In Pinellas County where I live winds throughout were probably 45 to 85 gusts barely approaching 100. There was no real eyewall by this time. The hurricane weakened too much and it spreads out when that happens so a lot of central florida got very strong winds but not killer winds.

Deveria existir abrigos subterrâneos para as pessoas para suportar tamanha a força dos ventos... impressionante!!!
Verdade da até um negocio só de ver meu Deus do ceu
In wpb I couldn't see anything and there was no AC I could barely breath.
Thanks. 😎✌✌
I wish I can listen to this for 9 hours during sleep minus the human's sounds.
E MESMO ASSIM😒O HOMEM PENSA QUE TEM PODER DE ALGUMA coisa😀DEUS SIM E PODEROSO👌
Its Crazy how there is complete no damage to one house, and then the house next door could be completely gone, checker board effect!!
Is there a Hurricane Alex (2010) Chase Video in your Chase History Website
This hurricane took so long to go away
At 1:58 that was my head hitting a light pole.....oh that is going to leave a Mark!
What day will hurricane scrambles come?
Excellent video and information. The storm was a bit worse in Golden Gate which is a few miles further East of you and the Airport. At the storm's worst point (in the front eyewall) I got pretty scared when I heard a persistent loud, low frequency growling with chattering sounds that lasted a minute or two before the eye came overhead. I thought the sounds were from a mini-tornado. They may have been the "mesovortex features" that accompanied the extreme turbulence mentioned above in the video description. I'm originally from NYC and never been in or near a tornado but those sounds I heard fit the description of a big heavy freight train passing nearby. They came from the direction of the wind and rain at the worst point of the eyewall when it was darkest outside.
The storm broke up AFTER the eye passed over Golden Gate. The back wall was nothing to speak of here. People expected storm surge damage off the Gulf (near Tamiami Trail) where this video was taken. That's where all the pros reported from but there was little to no "storm surge". Most flooding and tree damage occurred a few miles inland where Golden Gate is situated. We may have gotten a Cat 4 IRMA in this area - still to be determined. About a week earlier 20" of heavy rain flooded the Golden Gate area. IRMA dropped heavy rain on the already saturated land causing new flooding which lasted for over a week in some places of Golden Gate.
Power went out around 1:45 PM, 3-4 hours before the storm hit. The worst part was ~5 PM and it was over ~5:30 PM. Areas of Golden Gate were flooded. Logan flooded and was closed at the intersection of Vanderbilt; Logan was also closed briefly at Pine Ridge Rd. The side streets off Logan South of Pine Ridge Rd were flooded and impassible except for raised vehicles for 2 days. Power wasn't restored in Golden Gate until 7-10+ days after the storm. The further West from TTN and I-75, the longer the power was out. 7 days after IRMA FPL trucks were seen slowly working their way South towards GG Pkwy from Pine Ridge Rd on Logan into each intersecting street going E to W on each street ending at I-75. They repaired broken power lines, poles and transformers a mile in each direction as they went. Residents watched as the trucks neared their streets knowing power was coming in a day or two.
It's now November 8 and we are still recovering from IRMA. Tree debris was removed (a second time) from curbside 2 days ago (11/6). More debris remains curbside along my side street. The hurricane is long gone but the inconvenience and exhaustion from its unexpected consequences lingers. IRMA was a bad but exciting experience I prefer not to repeat. Riding out the storm at home still beats being stuck in stalled evacuation traffic for 12 hours and longer.
Thank you so much for watching, and for the detailed description of your experience in the storm! I hope the recovery in your area gets better, and that everything will be back to normal soon.
Yup sounds like what I had to deal with.
Storm was definitely worse east of I75.
Except we only briefly clipped the eye and got stuck in that eyewall for hours...
Kinda in the vicinity of eastern GGE and Picayune Strand, not much out there.
Extreme wind damage after though, house had significant wind damage that I think was caused from a mesovortex.
Took them until around halloween to get power back on.
Where I am in Golden Gate City now took between 2-3 weeks.
*let's all take a moment of silence for the trees and birds...REEEEEEEEEEEEEE*
thank you for that moment of silence with me
The ducks in our apartment were actually having fun. We watched them go in the pond on one side, then drift across the pond, then do it again.
That winds is extremely strong if that was a tornado that's gonna be ef 1 or ef 2 even ef 3
Yes, while the wind you're seeing in this video is purely from the eyewall of the hurricane, the strength is in the EF2 range. It's also possible that some of the more extreme gusts may have been augmented by transient eyewall mesovorticies, which are smaller vorticies embedded along and/or within the eyewall.
At its peak strength it was like a big strong ef 4 tornado
Did you go to Puerto Rico to document Hurricane María or no?
Diomedito María Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to chase Maria.
How lovely and adorable. Wanted to drive through the eyewall.
Ripped my roof off.
Never drive in this.
