- It is a tradition in some families for boys to join the Boy Scouts of America. And now it's becoming a tradition for girls, too. In February, girls were officially allowed to join all activities in the Boy Scouts, now called Scouts BSA to reflect the change. But the girls and boys are in separate troops. VOA's Deborah Block visited two all-girl troops in the Washington area to see how they are liking scouts so far.

Girl Scouts were trash talking BSA for a long time for not being inclusive. And so then BSA changes, becomes inclusive to the hilt and not GS sues.

It's a tough situation. I didn't realize it but there's a lot of politics that comes along with it. For instance, scouting organizations are massive landowners so there is a real risk that the land and property controlled by these organizations could be threatened by Monumental shifts like this. It also doesn't help that the Girl Scouts existed because the Boy Scouts of America didn't allow girls and now that they are allowing girls, all the work that they put in to support girls may be lost. I wonder if the Negro Leagues had a similar frustration when the MLB finally integrated.

If they wanted to join the Boy Scouts so they could do more “adventurous” stuff and “outdoor” things then maybe add or change some activities in the Girl Scouts to accommodate for that instead of joining the Boy Scouts lol

Most people’s backyards arent mountains or lakes ya know, Living in the suburbs of ca you get some grass, air, and maybe a burnt tree or to.
You might argue, just go with your family and go camping.
What if your family cant afford to go on a week long camping trip in the mountains? Both time wise, and money.

Due to the youth protection guidelines set by Scouts BSA, the troops are all female or all-male, there are no co-ed troops. In most cases you do activities with your troops and the female scouts are out their doing the same things that the male scouts are.

Girl scouts was created as a way for girls to prove they can do the same things as boys. As a way for us to say that if boys get to have their own exclusive group then so do we. I've been in girl scouts my entire life, while my brother is in boy scouts. We go on more trips, do more volunteering, and do more outdoors. I think this is rediculous. If you want a group of scouts that has both genders, we have that, it's called 4H.
You ruined the boy scouts
I had a person in my family in scouts and there were more girls that wished they could be in boy scouts, not because of Gender. But because of the message Girl Scouts is today. My sister was in it and it was all politics and nothing useful. Girls want the savy outdoors experience and girl scouts NEVER offers it. Mainly it was sewing, cooking, cleaning and selling cookies. Then when it was a Boy scout and Girl Scout meet and Greet. they found more girls wanted to be doing the stuff the boys were doing. Which was a shell shock to most of the pack leaders for the boys!

Many of the girls in my Scouts BSA troop did Girl Scouts. We have found that they’re two completely different programs that do different things. It’s overall a different experience.
As a female member of scouts BSA I did join Girl Scouts for years but that system of run by parents and not connected to a church so units die plus the BSA teachers many new skills that Girl Scouts do not focus on because Girl Scout is stem based

S B hey Id just like to say as a girl who is in scouts I joined it because my local girl scout troop was with some of the worst people I know there were these really mean girls who I was not friends with who’s parents were the troop leader and also growing up I was raised out in the country with my two brothers who I looked up to a lot. Also with all the people saying that there putting the boys and girls together there not, well yes at camp outs with other troops there are boys there the girls have there own troop/camp site and tents. And I don’t mean to sound like a feminist because honestly i’m not I would just like to say you need to look into stuff more

This video and these interviews were a month after our troop first started. Many of the girls had very little experience but we are now growing as humans and have several Star scouts and even more first-class scouts. There are 3 girls in our troop that are on track to have Eagle by June.

When I was in the BSA, my sister always tagged along because she enjoyed what we did far more than the Girl Scouts. We even called her an "Honorary Boy Scout". It's no surprise to me that girls would want to join the program, and I think they would thrive in such an environment.
The only real concerns I'd have revolve the lawsuits the BSA are currently dealing with regarding abuse, and how easy it is for children of that age to be taken advantage of in such a setting. The BSA is run by some of the best professionals and volunteers you'll ever meet, and they have taken many strides in protecting youth from that sort of thing, but it unfortunately must not be anywhere near enough to prevent it from happening altogether. I just hope that adding young girls into the mix won't exacerbate that.
Same with my brother before I joined troop 248 and was forced to be in this video lol 😂 because believe it or not this was one of our first meetings and I wasn’t cleared to use my bow of flint and steel yet I’m now first class after a year and a half

My 11 year old dropped out, along with many others. Only reason the boy scouts are allowing this is due to being broke, no other reason.

I was in Girls Scouts when I was 7 years old towards 14 years old. We did the same thing as boys did in scouts. Even my mother was in Girls Scouts when she was younger. Even my sister was one,too. She quit just after a year in Juniors. I was in it for 7 years. I did going hiking, camping, horseback riding, sell cookies,candy, calendars, and even gone to expos for Scouts at this one mall that was near my home. I even learned how to build a fire, using a saw in cutting wood, even to put a tent up, and so on. I was in the scouts from 1977-1985. It was different to be in Brownies. I did wore my uniform when I was 8 years old for a class photo. I think that I was happy to be in Girls Scouts. I did liked the Cub Scouts uniforms when I was little because they have to wear blue uniforms which is my favorite color. When I was in Brownies that I had to wear a brown jumper with slacks or w/o slacks, whit shirt with the logo In stripes going up and down, even a little orange tie that snapped, even brown socks, an option of wearing an orange turtleneck, and of course the brown beanie. In juniors it is green uniform with a red tie that also snapped, and of course a green beret has a hat. When I was in cadets the uniform was the top was in plaid white a green skirt. I think it was 1982 towards 1985 when I was in it. Those years that I think that I was getting tired of it. The only think that kept me going was being with friends in the troop. It sounds liked that I’m a need to be in the Girls Scouts. The last time that I did anything with the scouts that I wasn’t in it when I was 15 years old was a trip for horseback riding. I didn’t want to go at that time. My mother made me go. It was the day that I sold some cookies to the people at a drive thru at this one bank with the troop leader and her daughter. We did a pretty good on making money from the cookies. A guy gave me a dollar for not selling him a box of cookies. That was winter of 1985 when the cookies were $2.00 a box.
This is so messed up, I was a boy scout, and let me tell you, I would not feel comfortable talking with my friends the same way I used to with girls around. Also, the Girl scouts program should have been modified to include optional outdoor training programs, instead of Boy Scouts adapting.
In Scouts BSA, all Scouts follow the youth protection guidelines set which include separating the male and female scout troops as well as at campsites and bathrooms. Girl Scouts and Scouts BSA are very different programs and you get something different from both of them.

Girl Scouts and Scouts BSA are very different programs. They have been using the same material to teach and learn for years upon years. Scouts BSA focuses on teaching leadership using the outdoors as their classroom whereas Girl Scouts places a focus on empowering females.

This has me question what is the Girl Scouts organization doing differently than the Boy Scouts? There are *some* videos on UA-cam of girl troops camping, so I am curious besides learning survival skills and community projects over girl scout cookies what has girls intrigued to be with the Boy Scouts more? Perhaps the two organizations in each state should have stipulated to do community projects and selling items together if they have not, any method to keep the children entertained in both the Scouts program and not feel disinterested.
I've been a girl scout my entire life, and my brother is in boy scouts. We do pretty much nothing different. Besides the big trademark things like girl scout cookies and the boy scout derby.

I joined Boy Scouts or "Senior" Scouts for a reason. I WANT TO EXPERIENCE HARD WORK AND CAMPING far away from our school😭...All my six years joining Girl Scouts here in my country, our org. didn't do anything but to camp indoor🙄, all these Boy Scouts do the hard work so that's why I joined Senior Scouts when I stepped in High School. Didn't regretted it tho, I ranked Pathfinder last year and doing some community services, it was fun not until covid enters.
ps. Boys can join GS here in our school but they only join for extra grades💀💀💀(but some joins bcs they want to)

Why can't each side of scouts just have the same kinds of teachings so the kids can have their core teachings and electives? Then they can have times we're both types of scouts get together to work together like cross-training. Boys aren't allowed in girl scouts so girls shouldn't be allowed in boy scouts; otherwise, it's inequality.

Thou I do wonder why they don't just change the names for "Boy & Girl" scouts organizations to something else. Like "Adventure Scouts" for the teams that take part in more OutDoor & BushCracting. Tasks and "Future Leader Scouts" for the ones that take part in Team Building & Marketing.

Scouts BSA and Girl Scouts are 2 completely different programs. They have different focuses and there is stuff to be gained from both Scouts BSA and Girls Scouts. I feel that Scouts BSA does more outdoorsy stuff.

I understood this is just like a patrol. scout is... look at the bright side, these young ladies want to participate in the scouts because they see their brothers or relatives go camping and come back with smiles. That implies scouts are being watched and they like what they see. Your only interaction is as instructor and guide just as you were when joined. After an outing or two the spirit of scouting will find the troop even more fun.
First positive comment I’ve seen in a while I’m Olivia Hurley in this video and doing a project as historian from the website on reactions to our troop I’m happy to say I’m first class now and many of my fellow scouts are star we have been a troop for around a year and a half thanks for the support of not knocking others down

Those aren't requirements. A flag ceremony isn't encoded in law so it's really just a bunch of local traditionals. You could have the state flag follow the US flag, you could have them each go up their own side, you could have them go up opposite sides then cross in the front, whatever. As long as you're respectful it's all good.

I think girls and boys do better in school and certain social activities when they are separate, I know I went to a mixed secondary school and a lot of the boys were disrespectful, non academic, disruptive and bullying, I would have been happier without them, only a small handful of girls were like this.
I think these girls would be better off in the Girl Guides, and if they made the Girl Guides more adventurous, broader skills, ask the girls what's missing from the organisation etc. There's no harm having an occasional meet up with the Scouts.

I’m a girl in this troop and I have used a knife and a flint rock to survive 3 days in the wild for a merit badge I’m tougher than you think this video is not a display of my skills

The two are very different in what they teach, and no matter what gender, we are all humans. And there are separate troops for the 2 genders, so boys get their space.
