So glad I came across this channel. 4wd projects for those that do not have a limitless budget. No big sponsors, no crate engine, crate axle 20k mods. Stuff the average wheeler might do.. Big thanks to TSTN for leading me to Dirt Garage!
The 3.4 makes the most sense, but I’ve gotta vote for a 3.0, cheap and rugged as long as you keep up on it. I love my 3.0, I can’t justify the 3.4 price tag tbh, but excited to see either one go in!
Laugh all you want at the 3.0, but when I got my truck the only other option was the 22re. Reliable as it may be, I happen to like driving through the mountains at the speed limit lol.
If you get a new rebuilt 22re or 22r they'll go 200k plus easy. But any used motor the condition is unknown. but a 3.4 is a fantastic motor just as bulletproof as the 22rs but you get more horse and torque.
Absolutely a rebuild 22RE will last forever. Just not something we want to tackle right now. Plus my brother is keen to put something in with more power.
Good content! I am glad you put this up. Seems like bad luck happens with every platform. Timing chain went on my 22re last year and ate through the timing cover a little. It ended up breaking some teeth off of the bottom gear. I hope it didn't mess my bearings up too bad. Fingers crossed lol.
We had a bunch of guys around here also do the cut and paste 22r/re engine crap all the time too and nothing ever lasted more than a few trips and it somehow was the engines fault.. No point in getting angry about an engine with no previous service history when you know yourself that you should have just done it right the first time and just rebuilt something.. its not like these engines are expensive to rebuild compared to anything newer...
The 22r sounds like a rod knock, due to oil starvation. They could have salvaged it by not revving the shit out of it, and replacing the bearings. (And maybe the oil pump??) They never said what the 22re’s problem was. Said it “locked up” ...??
The 22RE was oil starvation. The 22R is still a mystery, drove down highway fine, and then stopped for gas, started knocking on way out of gas station. True the 22R could have been saved, but by this point we already had the new motor for it.
I had one last 20 years with a complete lack of maintenance. At that point the chain went and I just rebuilt it properly. They really are a stout motor and last forever when actually maintained. Just keep an eye on the timing chain.
Man I've been struggling with mine. Had it built because the head cracked at 220k. After 40k more the timing chain guides broke and it ate through the timing cover. Replaced timing cover, chain, metal guides, tensioner, oil pump, water pump, ECT. Ran great for 3k and now it's knocking. Thinking all those aluminum shavings gathered under the number one bearing. Can't win with this thing.
First engine was lack of oil that killed it. But was a trooper while she lived. We noticed blow by on the new motor not long after swapping it 😅 It was not long for the world.
3.4 5vz... but what about the 3rz? I know it doesn't make loads of power but its more than 22re. The 5vz is heavier.... the 3rz is only 60lbs heavier and should get epic mileage in an even lighter vehicle! Well it was light but that bed may weigh a bit. 5VZ swap is very common for good reason but I would love to see a 3rz swap!
I got a rebuilt 22re that I Webber Carbd.. Its Bored out, new pistons rings, everything, its been sitting in storage for a while though, i used it a little, but went to 3vze for more Umph.. Though i checked compression later after engine was pulled on 22re and it was a little weak, turns out I made the Rocker arm valves a little too tight, so it brought compression down slightly, always wondered now, how it would drive and how the power is now that the ebgine compression numbers are 180+ if I recall..
"these things are bulletproof" lol, is what i always heard. barely barely made it to the top of imogene pass before mine gave it up, rebuilt it, but next time its gettin a 3.4 for sure.
They are bulletproof . These guys are just a little bit too inexperienced with mechanics to know that there is something seriously wrong with the ECU the we’re using and are making false claims because they couldn’t figure out what was actually wrong. Wasnt sending enough fuel to and caused it to detonate or the coolant sensors were giving out bad information and causing a lean mixture.
Don't take a chance with used engines, rebuild them. I rebuild my 87 runner about 5 years ago I had put a tons of miles never had any issues. I just got another 87 runner. Going for a 3rz engine swap.
Живу в России,и завидую .Очень хотел найти такую же тойоту,но у нас на всю страну к сожалению их единицы.И владельцы не спешат с ними расставаться.Поэтому купил себе TOYOTA Surf .
that first songs a chill banger

HELL yeah! A 3.0 3VZE!! Best engine Toyota ever made.
It's possible? They are solid motors in my experience!
It blew because the heads are different from 22r-22re different valves
Different heads wouldn't lead to rod bearing failure. Smh internet wannabe mechanics
3.4 is going into that beauty
Maybe? Maybe not..
About to go on a trio to Moab in my 90 with a 22RE, this makes me confident...
It will make it! In general 22RE is a great motor.

Dude if they put a 3.slow in it I’m gonna unsubscribe.
Would be insane to swap in a 3.0. 3.4 allllllllday

@@DirtGarage No problem with that.

5vz! 5vz! 5vz! Chant! Chant! Chant! 5vz! 5vz! 5vz!.... plus a supercharger would be nice!
5VZ, 5VZ!
@@DirtGarage Supercharger?
That’s such a horrible sound! That’s the equivalent to gear as a smell! I hate the smell of gear oil and I hate knocking motors!
3.0L 1kz 😏😏
I wish!
Dirt Garage over here in Aus you can get a complete drop in box and motor and computer for less than 1000 bucks Aussie, should move here 😏😏
5vz swap for sure, but check the oil this time.
Oil was only responsible for the first 22RE! Haha
Sounds like rod knock on the 22R.
Hi, v 6 !!!
Yes!
1UZ! They make kits to adapt that to an R150. Go big! 1UZ!
That would be epic! I want to build something with 1UZ so bad.
I did a 2uz. Gas pig but really fun.
We had a bunch of guys around here also do the cut and paste 22r/re engine crap all the time too and nothing ever lasted more than a few trips and it somehow was the engines fault..

We are not upset about this one bit. We knew the risks of putting in a used motor.
I sold my last 22RE with 288,000 miles on it. Really curious what popped those two.

I'm going with the 4.3 Vortec swap. Same HP as 3.4 but....250lbs /ft torque @ 2800 rpm. The 3.4 is only 210-220lbs/ft @3600 rpm.
You sacrifice toyota reliability for about 30ft lbs. Not worth it
@Carter Mealey I actually went with a 5.3l LS. I wa thinking the same as you.
Kubota v2203 please

My old 91 with a 22RE lasted the whole time I owned it with minimal maintenance. They are stout, we just had bad luck.
LS swap the world!!
Mo-Powa!

What caused the failure?
A knock??? Or a pound
Too much tire and gear. If you take under powered engine and force it to do more work than intended, it will burn up or break.

3RZ is a fantastic option, great upgrade from the 22RE. Not the route we are taking though!
@@DirtGarage Dang! I was hoping you would so we could see the nitty gritty on how to get it to go! Still 5vz will be GREAT and good info!
3.4 swap 🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏 I’m over 22r/ res as well
Should of realized that the wiring is for the efi is what is blowing up engines. Not getting enough fuel

fuel pressure regulator vacuum line. which of the 3 metal lines behind the egr does it go to?
Don't take a chance with used engines, rebuild them. I rebuild my 87 runner about 5 years ago I had put a tons of miles never had any issues. I just got another 87 runner. Going for a 3rz engine swap.
3RZ is a great motor, perfect upgrade from 22RE. Not the path we are following though.
OM617 I don't know
Good guess!
Is that a 61 Impala?
5vz time! R150f! Slap a supercharger on and add fuel
God that sounds like ass...
3.4 :)
Maybe?
Stick a Toyota diesel at it and change the gearing so it s not working it's arse off
That would be awesome!
3.4
I want to do an axle swap on 91 toyota pickup. Got any leads on Toyota solid front axle and gear driven transfer cases? I am near Cranny
Message me on Instagram, I might be able to help.
Slap another 22re in it and run it for another 200k miles😎
Or another week. Who knows
Maybe just put a better re in it and not a old used one. Super easy to rebuild and cheap
I have a spare one for sale 😝

needs a 3.4 swap
I’d 350 swap it

1UZ would be epic. Been craving a 1UZ swap build up.
Should put in a 3.0td. Diesel all the way 🚛 💨
