    Sprint was largely responsible for killing the Radio Shack store in my town. Our RS was a corporate store, and when Sprint bought them out they made them pull all of the RS product and display nothing but Sprint products. The manager that had been there for around thirty years said customers stopped coming in when that happened. It was too late when RS products returned to the shelves and the store closed. I always enjoyed going and it was nice being able to get electronic parts locally. I loved seeing the vintage electronics and catalogs. When I first saw the name on the door, I thought it was going to be an old Curtis Mathes TV place! Very nice video, enjoyed seeing everything! 📺📻💚

    • @TheRetromantic81
      @TheRetromantic81  3 роки тому +1

      That really is a shame about the Sprint taking RS products away...I am guessing that happened in a lot of places. I was somewhat referring to that when I mentioned people thinking Radio Shack became a cell phone only place. I'm glad you enjoyed seeing the retro tech display...I was really excited about that. In fact I have an idea for a future video that has to do with those older Radio Shack items! Oh and I got results for that TV place you mentioned when I Google this one, lol. I hadn't heard of it before. Thanks as always for watching and commenting. Glad you enjoyed it! 💚😎📻🎙📡📼

    I worked at a RadioShack outlet store that was corporate owned but it was inside a RadioShack distribution Warehouse. We sell all the box damaged products from stores that had fires, or sprinkler issues, or boxes damaged in the warehouse. Just skids and skids of everything RadioShack at a cheap price. From 2000 to 2006. I think there were only 3 outlet stores in the whole country.

    I had a computer in the 80s because my family was quite wealthy. I had an IBM PS/2 Model 30 8088. Still have the Model M keyboard from it to this day. The whole system was over $10k if you believe it. You should see the manuals it came with! That's back in the day when you'd learn how to use a computer from scratch just by the extensive documentation it came with. Look how far we've backslid.

      @User0000000000000004 2 роки тому

      Just FYI, I intended that first bit to be in jest, as I don't come from a wealthy family, but I can see it comes across a bit dickish. So if you read that and thought "wow. what a prick." just know that I come from a typical white american middle class family. I mean, if I were from a rich family, I'd OBVIOUSLY have purchased the IBM PS/2 Model 80, right? MSRP of the Model 80 in 1987 was $8,495 before you even talk about display or printer. I think those Model 80 towers were the most beautiful thing ever made back in the day. I'd love to get my hands on one and turn it into a restomod. I used to know a place that had a warehouse full of IBM computers, pallets of them! But the hoarder dude what owned the place got too old or sick or something and the whole lot was sold at auction. So sad.
      To sum up, not a prick, not rich, just a normal dude what makes bad jokes.

      1985! Lol, no actually there are still about 500 non-corporate owned ones in operation in the US. Radio Shack also has a big online presence now too. And obviously they are keeping up with the times and tech! I loved how this one had a retro display though...so cool.

    A step back in time for sure. Sad when the stores you grew up with fade away. I worked for Sky City Store in Hickory, N.C. for over 10 years. It was like the 1st mall there. I was very sad when it finally went out of business due to newer, bigger malls.

      Oh my gosh! There used to be a Sky City here in Franklin too! It was before I lived here so I never went but I find old toys and other items in thrift stores sometimes with Sky City price stickers still on them. I looked up the store once too, to see what it was. So no more Sky Cities, but we do have a Roses nearby that has been open since the 70's! I made a video on it which will be out at some point. Thanks for watching and commenting! 😎

      @@TheRetromantic81 I was actually a District Manager for Carter-Overton who leased out a big part of the store like cosmetics, school, candies, health & Beauty, paper products, novelty items, and summer goods like flip-flops, sunglasses, tanning lotions, Etc.) and traveled to most all the store including Franklin! But Hickory was my base store. I loved that job!

    You need to make it a Radio Shack not a phone Shack

    • @TheRetromantic81
      @TheRetromantic81  2 роки тому

      This particular Radio Shack only has 1 small area focused on phones. It has all the things the old ones did like small parts and components and lots of electronics. That's why I filmed it. 🙂

    What a sad, sad, pathetic, meaningless, depressing, disappointing, obsolete, barren, bland, crusty, irrelevant, useless, hopeless, worthless, aborted version of a once great retail brand. The store as I knew it died in the early 90s when they started selling trinkets like RC cars, which were some of the crappiest RC cars ever sold. They could have been huge and survived intact with the right leadership but someone must have done some stupid things to destroy them like this. 😢

    • @TheRetromantic81

      I remember the RC cars of that time period, lol...I got one for Christmas. I was so disappointed as my car traveled at a snail's pace. 😆 I'm with you that the brand is not the same as it once was. I'm glad these guys are here though--in my town, keeping the memory alive and the sales going as best they can. They do a really good job.

      Ok bones...I'm letting ya know right now. If you were able to make it 3 minutes into the video you'd have seen for yourself that they do. I'm not interested in filming a phone store, I filmed this location because they carry those things like the old Radio Shack stores did. 😆👍

      @@bones007able Agree in general...which is why I wanted to showcase this one. The owner has been there over 40 years and has tried to maintain a lot of the old ways such as keeping the small parts drawers. He also keeps retro Radio Shack technology on display and old catalogs too. Anyway, I appreciate you commenting, just standing up for this particular one--it was neat to see.
