Thank you for this song. My kids and I used to sing this in the car all the time. We still do, one of my most treasured songs and many treasured memories.
My absolutely favorite bluegrass band--an excellent example is why is here! As a guitarist who ported to the mandolin, Chris Thile became my favorite mandolin player early on. Didja know that his family didn't even have a TV in their house--but they had a studio! I have recordings of him from when he was 14 years old.
2:08-2:25 lyrics- Johnny's in the basement, mixin' up the medicine I'm on the pavement, thinkin' about the government The man in a trench coat, badge out, laid off Says he's got a bad cough, wants to get it paid off Look out kid, it's somethin' you did God knows when, but you're doin' it again You better duck down the alleyway, looking for a new friend The man in the coon-skin cap in a pig pen Wants 11 dollar bills - you only got 10
How has this been up over two years and only has almost 2000 views? Fair enough the Chris Thile's jumper could've driven people away, but i'm warming to that as much as his mando playing! Quality music from quality musicians, thank you for sharing it.
The fox went out on a chilly night He prayed for the moon to give him light For he'd many a mile to go that night Before he reached the town-o, town-o, town-o He'd many a mile to go that night, before he reached the town-o He ran 'til he came to the farmer's pen The ducks and the geese were kept therein He said, a couple of you are gonna grease my chin Before I leave this town-o, town-o, town-o Said a couple of you are gonna grease my chin, before I leave this town-o He grabbed the great goose by the neck And he threw a duck across his back And he didn't mind the quack, quack And the legs all dangling down-o, down-o, down-o He didn't mind the quack, quack and the legs all dangling down-o The old grey woman jumped out of bed Out of the window she popped her head Crying John, John, the great goose is gone And the fox is on the town-o, town-o, town-o John, John, the great goose is gone and the fox is on the town-o He ran 'til he came to his nice warm den And there were the little ones, eight, nine, ten Sayin Daddy, Daddy, better go back again For it must be a might fine town-o, town-o, town-o Daddy, Daddy, go back again for it must be mighty fine town-o The fox and his wife, without any strife Cut up the goose with a fork and a knife They never had such a supper in their life And the little ones chewed on the bones-o, bones-o, bones-o They never had such a supper in their life And the little ones chewed on the bones
I think it's pretty difficult to say that someone as relatively young as Chris Thile is the best ever of anything. You mentioned Bill Monroe, and I'd like to add Ricky Skaggs and Sam Bush.
How does age factor into being the best? If he was in a contest with 99 of the worlds greatest players of all time you would hear the words, "holy shit" muttered 99 times before he was done with his performance.
i'm no bluegrass addict but Chris Thile and his bands musicianship leaves me in awe.

Excellent!! The player of the mandolin does an EXCELLENT job! Great talent!
That's Chris Thile, one of the best mandolin players in the world!

Scooby and the gang sure can play! 🤣
Omg…they look just like them!
This is an awesome song, and those people can PLAY! I used to use this song with my elementary music students. They loved it, too.
2:08-2:25 lyrics-
Johnny's in the basement, mixin' up the medicine
I'm on the pavement, thinkin' about the government
The man in a trench coat, badge out, laid off
Says he's got a bad cough, wants to get it paid off
Look out kid, it's somethin' you did
God knows when, but you're doin' it again
You better duck down the alleyway, looking for a new friend
The man in the coon-skin cap in a pig pen
Wants 11 dollar bills - you only got 10
Bob dylan wrote that
Been in love with Sarah Watkins for years!
Impossible not to tap your foot to this fantastic music! :D
This group was always great.
putting that "subterranean homesick blues " bit in there was pretty sharp!
Unbelievably good! I've never heard mando playing like it - and the recorded version is even better.
Wow, this is so good! And nice tribute to Dylan with the verse from Subterranean Homesick Blues.
Right On!!!!

One of my first memories; my grandmother singing this to me about 75 years ago.
This has to be the most talented bluegrass group in history!
*new grass
So amazing, every time I watch this. So coordinate to have seen them live at Merle Fest and request this asking with the hand song.
saw it live yo... and it rocked!
Austin City Limits is where I first fell in love with Nickel Creek.
Holy shit
It still amuses me that this melody fits perfectly with Bilbo's troll song from The Hobbit.
Now that’s how you play the Mandolin!
What a team they what a gift. Nickle Creek was always great.
The fox went out on a chilly night
He prayed for the moon to give him light
For he'd many a mile to go that night
Before he reached the town-o, town-o, town-o
He'd many a mile to go that night, before he reached the town-o
He ran 'til he came to the farmer's pen
The ducks and the geese were kept therein
He said, a couple of you are gonna grease my chin
Before I leave this town-o, town-o, town-o
Said a couple of you are gonna grease my chin, before I leave this town-o
He grabbed the great goose by the neck
And he threw a duck across his back
And he didn't mind the quack, quack
And the legs all dangling down-o, down-o, down-o
He didn't mind the quack, quack and the legs all dangling down-o
The old grey woman jumped out of bed
Out of the window she popped her head
Crying John, John, the great goose is gone
And the fox is on the town-o, town-o, town-o
John, John, the great goose is gone and the fox is on the town-o
He ran 'til he came to his nice warm den
And there were the little ones, eight, nine, ten
Sayin Daddy, Daddy, better go back again
For it must be a might fine town-o, town-o, town-o
Daddy, Daddy, go back again for it must be mighty fine town-o
The fox and his wife, without any strife
Cut up the goose with a fork and a knife
They never had such a supper in their life
And the little ones chewed on the bones-o, bones-o, bones-o
They never had such a supper in their life
And the little ones chewed on the bones
Marvelous !
Superb.
i love this song soooooo much
Flawless performance!
Byron House on the bass
Amazing!
reminds me of rattlin bog folk song the wiggles did lol. that’s what brought me here again
unbelievable
I would ask for a video with the lyrics but they would fly by so fast I would get nothing from sub titles. I listened 3 times. I am still amazed.
I had this on CD, it was fast on there, but this is super speed
I like this song
omg i would love to play with hem!! im soooo obsessed!!
Good Music Group In The 2000's
❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Still amazing ❤️
Приятно видеть русских людей любящих Nickel Creek. Привет из Калифорнии ❤
that's flat-footin music right there!
Nice to hear Subterranean Homesick Blues slipped in.
The Petersens and Ger O'Donnell have a recent version. Their version has great harmonies.
I first heard this song on a Smothers Brothers album.
Impressive.
If you can listen to this & NOT dance in your chair, something wrong.
And the fiddle!
ACL live is proud to present: Quentin Tarantino and the Sweater Kids
@CherryBurstLesPaul i completely agree with this statement!! he is the best in the world!! :)
does anyone know how to do this strumming
Listen to We banjo 3 with sharon shannon version
Drei Männekes und so viel Musik ... Und der Mandolinenspieler ist ja wohl der "Knibbel-Fummel-König". Hut ab!
I play mandolin too
this is a great song my teacher taght it to me
The title of best ever goes to Bill Monroe
@walksnell Your argument is invalid, sir. Chris Thile is one the best, if not the best, mandolinists ever.
umm who the hell is aaron carter? and this was the style of the era. he looks much different now.

Maybe but watch him go nuts on the Bach stuff. I can't let my mandolin hear that or she won't let me play her
He wants eleven dollar bills and you only got ten!!
Yeah, they're good, but when I was their age, I knew Iron Man and Smoke on the Water.,.
