    Always makes my day to see a new video from you pop up! Good job on the race and for getting your WS bib. In the past I suffered from shin splints. I used an old 1 gallon ice cream pail with some sand in it for conditioning. Whenever I was setting at my desk or at home I put the handle over my foot, behind my toes and just did toe lifts... lots and lots of toe lifts. Between that and limiting the amount of road running I did I put them behind me. Best of luck on your training. Don't be a stranger.

    • @afewmominutes
      @afewmominutes Рік тому +1

      Thanks Mike. I have indeed started some strength exercises on shins, the injury was due to my left shin being too weak which is a little odd as this has never come up before. The pail sounds like a good one, you can adjust the weight as needed, I'll give it a go.

    Your videos are awesome and really bring to light what this sport (for us everyday ultra marathoners - if I can say that) is all about. So many of these videos are filled with emotion and larger than life etc. etc. and I'm not saying it's not that but sometimes I feel like saying "Bring it down a notch" which you do perfectly in your videos. This stuff is supposed to be fun and we chose to put in that training and enter these big races so if we can't have some fun with it all what is the point. Keep the videos coming bud!! As someone who's never run more than 3 miles in life, this is mind-boggling to me, pardon my ignorance. What is it like running in the night in the race, completely alone? Isn't it scary? What goes on in your mind?

    • @afewmominutes
      @afewmominutes Рік тому

      Ha, it used to boggle my mind too. Depending on the race, other people are always a few minutes away. The race leader got chased by a moose at this race once (in daylight), everyone else has people in front of them clearing the way. I got surprised about 1:30am with a moose coming from the side crossing the trail, I didn't see it until it stepped right in front of me. That's rare through, no point in worrying about it!

    Hey man, great story and great effort! I am curious about your shin, and swelling because I have experienced exactly the same a week and a half ago, when I did my first 100 mile race! Had shin pains which were especially bad on downhills, and after the race I had significant swelling which is almost gone now, and it's been like 10 days. What type of injury would you describe this as? I was nervous for a stress fracture and got x-rayed but there was none. And how was your recovery from it? I still have pains from certain movements, but it is coming down day by day it seems, but the progress seems to be slowing.

    • @afewmominutes
      @afewmominutes Рік тому

      Sounds the same, I got xrays and ultrasound as I was worried about a stress fracture as well, which came back negative. Swelling was really bad at first, looked like I'd been hit with a baseball bat on the lower shin. Basically really bad shin splint, or compartment syndrome where the muscle swells up bigger than the sheath it's in. Took almost a month for the shin and ankle swelling to go down, but at least 2 months until things were pretty much back to normal. Not fun, but give it time. I've been doing exercises for my shin to make sure it doesn't happen again. Congrats on your 1st 100!
