There is a fantastic read called "Buried Treasure" by Rabbi Daniel Lapin and one of the concepts it outlines how there is a belief that the reason Jews were chosen as God's people is due to the beauty and truth in how the Hebrew language is constructed. Every letter has meaning behind it, a number that corresponds to it, and symbolism is buried in symbolism, geometry and geography throughout the construction of the language... it is truly elegant and incredible.
The Phoenician and English language has the same characteristic about the letters having a number value although English certainly doesn’t have all the characteristics of Hebrew or is even used in that way.
As a retired college educator, I have to say this is what is wrong with “higher ed” today. The social sciences have devolved into “feelings” and “tell us about your truth” crap. So disappointing.
It is actually inaccurate that it is different prayers in a Mezuzah; if there are different prayers it is not a Mezuzah (the box is not the Mezuzah, in fact it does not even require a box to be a mezuzah), in a Mezuzah is the Shema Yisrael (Hear o’ Israel) prayer.
It's also interesting that rituals and traditions change. The bat mitzvah was invented just over 100 years ago (1922) and it has become a standard part of the culture and religion for many Jewish people.
I think you're talking about the Bat Mitzvah "party," the Bat Mitzvah just like the Bar Mizvah (also not the party...) has been part of the Jewish experience since time immemorial
Bar/Bat Mitzvah does not mean "becoming a man/ woman" although it is a rite of passage that can convey this meaning. However, it actually means becoming a "son of/ daughter of the Law/Torah" and it is the age wherein you become accountable to the various mitzvot (613 laws) that apply to your sex and your community standing (for example, many don't apply to ANYONE anymore because there are no Kings or Priests).
If you are "teaching" in a classroom setting, it would be best to provide accurate information to the students. A rabbi from the community would have been happy to speak to your class. This was wrong!
I have to agree that having a Rabbi or Jewish educator would have been more instructive to you class. Your class on prisons had an ex-convict as an expert speaker. A few quick corrections which shows how far off you students were. A Mezuzah ALWAYS has the same scroll 8nside it. In fact the scrolls are all identical, hand inscribed by a specially trained scribe. There are 2 biblical quotes on the scroll Deuteronomy VI, 4‑9 and Deuteronomy XI, 13-21. Both command that "these Words" be inscribed on "the doorposts of your house, and upon your gates". There is no "historical" precedent for Bat Mitzvah being age 12 with menstruation, since the first Bat Mitzvah 8n the world was performed in 1922 by Rabbi Mordecai Kaplan, the founder of Reconstuctionist Judaism, which views Judaism as a culture. (he only had daughters) A discussion of American Judaism should include the divisions or denominations. One last thing Reform Jews call their house of worship a Temple. Conservatives call it a Jewish Center (usually), while most Orthodox congregations use the term "congregation" in their names. Synagogue was the Greek term for a house of assembly for prayer used by Jews, so is really more of a generic term PS: love your videos
Both plus more. Judaism started as a nation like the Assyrians, teotihuacans or other ancient nations that had a unique religon and culture. Jews have hung on to these ancient ways longer than most, this is why Judaism is hard for modern people to understand.
i love this discussion, knowing more about Jewish people.

A really great book to learn about Judaism is called "To Life" by Harold Kushner.
Great class

How is this "wrong?" Most jews aren't rabbis. This is the experience of regular people and is still valid.
@@TheSerioshka91 I gave the information that was wrong in another comment!

Is Judaism a culture or a religion?

Yes
All three should not have been chosen to represent the Jewish Faith.
