Yes I am a “hangers on” ;) and I truly enjoyed this video. It may seem strange, but my favorites are when you talk as you paint-just hearing the sound of the pallet knife and brush strokes not only makes me feel as though I’m almost there, but it gives me an idea of how much pressure you do and don’t use when painting certain areas. I actually learn so much from that and these videos. Just the little tips, you may not even realize you’re giving vastly improves the way I, well try, to paint. I really do appreciate this videos and the beautiful paintings you create. So thank you, so very much for taking the time to give us these lessons. Take care and hope to see another soon!😊
I’ve only watched this video and part one of the same painting. I’m a relatively new painter and I had lost the urge to paint. You’re method is so freeing I’ve started painting again and I have the same excitement I did when I first started. Love your videos and style! Thank you!
I stayed til the end not only on this one, but on every one I have ever watched because you impart so much to my learning process. The tree painting was exquisite and I will try to do this with the oak tree in my front yard. Thank you for sharing your talent.
Stuart that was one of the quickest hours in tutorials I’ve ever experience, brilliant. You touched on pallet, dirty hands, dirty paper towel and took us through, quite effortlessly the calm and careful process of painting and throwing uncertainties out of the window. Thank you, so many times I’ve knit picked at a painting and overworked it. Please keep them coming you are quite easily one of the best tutors on UA-cam👍🏻😁 Stella my friend,
As an artist who was primarily working with charcoal and would focus too much on the fine details I can’t tell you how much your videos have inspired me. I went out to my local art store and purchased some oils and brushes and have begun on my journey of oil painting. This style of art is very freeing and really helps me not constrain myself into a set mentality when approaching a blank canvas. Your commentary is extremely helpful! Thank you for inspiring another artist!
Yes! Stewart! God says that- He said be either hot or cold --- neither be lukewarm- lest I spew you out of my mouth! So, the One Who made these magnificent dramatic skies likes drama too🖌️🎨
I'm curtain many of us are "hangers-on" Stu....lol Due to your over-explaining-while-doing (which makes it interesting & enjoyable) this lesson is my favorite...thank you
I've said/typed before that I don't mind if you get in way while painting, the new camera does give a much better picture, I've also always loved your explanations; (especially when you veer off topic), I personally would much rather your teaching videos never go the way of fast super slick Bells & Whistles, I agree with others comments that the way you show us the 'How to' it does feel as close to a one to one, like we are standing watching and listening whilst you freely throw the paint around with gay abandon... Pure Magic Sir
In reply to your question about your videos - it doesn’t bother me that they are not the most slick. It’s your content and the way you patiently deliver it that’s important to me. Also I’m seeing exactly how you apply the paint in real time - I’m just learning. As you say it’s like being in the studio with you, and it’s all for free, and you are not doing a hard sell - buy my expensive brushes, etc. keep doing what you’re doing , it’s great and so helpful (and entertaining)!🙂
I almost always watch the entire video. I learn so much from you. It is an amazing technique. Talk as much as you want. You have a great sense of humor. And, I do not mind your back at all as you never hide what your doing.
Yes, I'm still here Stuart, along with loads more of your subscribers, I'm sure. I have watched this video before and having watched it for the second time I've found that I've understood you're teaching technique more. Love your work, thank you, you help to make my day.
I don't paint and have no interest or appreciation in art, but I've watched the Joy of Painting for years as a sleep aid, due to the sounds of the brushes and knives and Bob's voice having a calming effect on me. I just found you about a month ago and your voice inspires a similar ethereal feeling. I hope you make hundreds more videos.
Ah, Stuart, you are delightful. And so correct on so many topics - from the joys of browsing the 'Net for arcane info, to the annoyance of finding cat hairs and other debris in one's paintings, to the "oily vs plastic" crowd, to the joys of painting more for pleasure than for profit. I'm DEF-initely an "Oily" too and have yet to meet an "Oily" who happily switched to acrylics, only the other way around. Moreover, I am one on of your many fans who watch every second of the lengthiest videos, and who do not give two hoots about your shoulder blocking the view occasionally or about whether your microphone sounds hissy or pops. AND I have tried your techniques to near instant success, i.e. I was amazed that it looked so easy, because (ta-dahh) it WAS. In short, THANKS for all you do.
I agree with Philip!! Stay the course, you are a very good teacher and an interesting individual. Love the stories from your past. Keep making those messes, they always end up great.
For me your videos are authentic. That is the value for me. You present the information as honestly as you do. It’s great. Love them all and I do rewatch them as well to review particular points. Thank you for your work.
Love being a hanger on, Thank you once again. You mentioned about bringing some of the sky colour down into the water once the painting is dry, can't wait for that.
Absolutely superb composition, puts me in mind of the swamplands “The dead marshes” in The Lord of The Rings... beautiful work Stuart... I hope to one day work as eloquently...
I just started to paint - at 62!!! I am just fascinated. Every (very) little paint is an adventure and that is so fun. Thank you for sharing with of all us!!!
I am an Australian, residing in the Philippines, and I watch ALL your videos from beginning to end. Though I do watercolour, I still get a lot of tips from your oils! Thanks for that!
Hi Stuart, I follow your for many years. It’s the first time I have the chance to see you in action. Magnificent ! Thank you so much. Nave a good evening.
Listening to you chat about art would be a delightful bonus. You’ve no idea how excited I was to see you’d posted another tutorial... & a long one too! My favorite kind. This may seem silly, but as a new artist, who’s only learned painting from UA-cam, your answer & explanation about where the light source could be was extremely helpful to me. I was constantly worrying about it when I painted, whether I’d gotten it right or not. I am & have only painted w/ acrylics, although I love the look of oil paintings. For practical reasons, I couldn’t work with oils, the primary reason being my very limited living space. The most challenging difference, when attempting to work w/ acrylics to achieve the same effects in certain types of oil paintings, it is true that some of the techniques are different mainly bc acrylics dry much faster as you mention. However, that’s not to say achieving the same look/results aren’t possible. Yes, it takes more steps, certain additives, & is more time consuming, but for me, that’s fine, bc my particular focus is on achieving the same end result, if my skill level allows for it. It’s also fine bc I find 🎨 remarkably therapeutic & relaxing, particularly in such stressful times. As such, for me it takes however long it takes, although admittedly bc I’m still so new to the art of painting, it takes me longer anyhow. I know you’re extremely busy, but when you find the time (whenever that may be), after watching & studying several of your tutorials, I attempted two small Tonal Impressionistic landscapes on 8”x10” canvases w/ acrylics, and sent them to you via FB Messenger. I used additives to slow drying time. I also used several of your techniques using paper towels, certain kinds of brushes, etc., which I thoroughly enjoyed. I study what you do intently, & find I’m improving w/ each painting. I also appreciate when you mention different artists you like that have influenced you. I never learned about art growing up, & at university, my focus was all science & research. I’ve looked at some of their work, & feel this widens my limited knowledge base of artists after French Impressionism. Just before I discovered Tonalism & Tonal Impressionism, I stumbled upon/ learned about the original Hudson River School landscape artists, a movement that began mid 19th century in the States. My favorite Hudson School artist is Albert Beirstadt. It was also how I stumbled upon American Tonalism (George Inness), which was a response to the detailed realism of theHudson School artists. And THAT is how I found you Mr Davies 😊. After looking at Tonalist works on Google, I went to UA-cam (I’m in my 50s & am amazed as you by all the fascinating info available to us now at the touch of a screen, in an instant), & searched for Tonalist painting tutorial, & there you were. I’d felt like I’d found my holy grail of art teachers. I found your work gripping, & your teaching methods to be a perfect fit for the way I learn, & I say this having literally watched hundreds of hours of painting tutorials on UA-cam. Ok, that’s my short story for the week, lol. Typically I do not write responses to videos I watch very often. You are my exception. As I’m only 37 minutes into this, I shall cease jabbering now😁.
Agreed!!! Yes please - tell us tales from your art training; what you enjoy about Turner, Const., other artists, and you’re near my age so I KNOW you have some stories from the hippie-artscene days of yore!
Hi, I was going to ask Stuart if he’d ever tried water mixable oils when I read your comment. I too paint in my small house and was concerned with traditional oil paints; I started with water mixable oils a couple of years ago and I love them. You can use mediums with them (but they smell!) or just on their own or with water. You can clean brushes with water too and it will also wash out of clothes if you wash them within a day. Hope this helps. 😊
I guess I’m a hanger on…I stayed to the very end. It’s like opening a jewel box, you don’t know which jewel you will find or how it can be worn or in this case that bit of information you need to fill the gap in understanding, so you can paint what you see in your head. Yes, I need to eat but what I feel is not a need for food but a need for knowledge. Keep on sharing your knowledge and I will keep on watching!!
I do watch you painting from the beginning to the end. I do love it, you’re wonderful. Don’t stop, please. Thank you for shearing your beautiful talent and rich experience. You don’t come over to me as a grandpa, by the way, I’m over 60 myself so not possible, no category I guess. Your do remind me of my teacher who showed me how to paint when I was young, living in Japan. He was an extremely kind person, he had this subtle way of expressing criticism, humble, too. He was a painter - Makoto Sakai, not a great one, but memorable. He also got me to look at the sea, mountains, made me just to see without much reasoning or “fiddling “. But back from the memory lane, after more than 30 years of living in Japan I just moved back with my cat to Europe. Still don’t have any decent place to live but made it my priority to get oil paints, an easel, etc organized. How is that for crazy? I’m watching your videos and find them overwhelmingly passion inducing, interesting, encouraging and a lot of fun, too. I also admire your for your thoroughness and being true to the things you say, being consequent, it reflects in your art, but you must know that. It’s great. Thank you.
Watched to the end, as always, and as always I was enthralled to the very end. Thank you, Stuart, for your wonderful videos and even more stunning paintings.
Following your response to my previous question (I was one of the 150 a week gang) , I can confirm that with knowledge of Acrylics and a little forethought, your cloud style can be reproduced successfully.....and it looks awesome! Rewinding a little.......ambidextrousness (if that is a real word).....I thought I was the only artist (previously) suffering with this condition. In previous lives I have managed to work out a way to incorporate it into what I was doing........and so when I am painting I stand at the centre of the work and paint the left side and centre with my left hand , the right side with my right hand . I have been doing this for around six months and have fairly good results.........and the "looser" the painting the better the results !!
you just took the scare out of making mistakes painting a sky and clouds , been watching for a while and enjoy your process and freedom in your painting. Going to give this style of painting a try, thank you
Stuart, I have been watching you paint in approx 6 or 7 of your videos, and since I have, I can't stop noticing clouds, and tone. Thanks for the inspiration.
wow graham i am so impressed and ecstatic about your art. I have been watching for several weeks now and I have been trying the skies, the landscapes and tomorrow I will do one with everything that I observed in several of your paintings. I am am enjoying this adventure very much and have learned so much. Again my thanks will keep on watching. It is all so interesting as well as exciting.
Yes I am catching up with this pretty late (July 2021) since the time you published it and want to say that I thoroughly enjoyed it. Yes watched every bit all to the end. Thank you for all the tips and lessons. Go and watch another one now... Cheers
Watched til end ... going to be the new 'watchword'. Very inspirational, thank you. Just started oil painting (at 65) after children clubbed together to buy me paints etc. Have been trying different techniques from 'happy accidents' to the photo-realistic techniques and really can't wait to try your free style. From my window my son says you can watch 4 seasons in a day. So much sky over the Black Isle. Love the real time video and commentary and am so very happy to watch this than some second rate stuff on TV.
Your videos are still very good and informative and I don't think you should worry about it at all and you are right not to worry. I think the most important thing about videos is its comprehensible content and this is present in all your videos. I believe most people will appreciate its content. The sky in the second part of this video with such a combination of colors is absolutely wonderful! And of course I still watch all the videos from start to finish because they are so valuable. You have definitely become my best teacher and I am truly grateful for that!
Your videos are perfect. Don’t worry about being in the way at times. The knowledge you share is exactly what we want to hear so keep talking. Thanks for sharing. By the way, good stitching on the underarm of your jumper!
Yep, watched it til the end! Your videos are never too long! You always make it quite interesting to watch... and I like you sense of humour! Beautiful sky!
Hi Stuart, early days for me after 40 years without painting and find your work truly inspirational. I did stay to then end of the video and enjoy your rambling melodious rhetoric
I am not a professional painter but with the scenery I painted were all comes from my mind just as you said like that. I love watching your videos now I have more inspirations to make more painting like you do. Thank you for sharing your knowledge to us viewers. Am sure you inspired so many people like me. And there's nothing wrong with your videoing.
I really love this one , one of these days I’ll use one of your paintings for my inspiration subject on my channel. God bless you Sir! I’m a huge fan of yours ! I sincerely love your art works
Hi Stuart! How on earth can people complain about your videos? I say, we are not at Warner Bros studios here, we are in your studio and it it is for free. Thank you Stuart, right now I am streaming your videos in the middle of rhe night, while making chrismas presents by hand. Hope to start painting soon again. Hugs and love to your wife.
I watched till the end. I usually use acrylic because I like how quickly they dry. I have just done an oil painting, which was a lot of measuring and detail, so I have come back to your videos to try something more free for my next painting.
Same! I love the smell of oil paints, I love how I can play with color and am able to fix any mistake!!! I do underpaintings in acrylic….but that’s why I’m trying to learn this technique I love the loose and spontaneous feel of your style!!! Thanks for putting it out there ❤️
I watched to the end, but I must admit to hurrying along the video in places. My takeaway from this painting, is the immediate foreground. It is a weak area in my paintings. So I always appreciate the crisp and definite lines of your foregrounds especially in this painting. I know you were demonstrating a sky, but I liked the sky I watched you create yesterday (my yesterday) was more to my liking. I do like your dramatic skies.
Thank you so much for your videos. I love your technique and am excited to try it. I have purchased a sheet of plywood and have been sanding my little heart out. So away I go.
I’ve just come back to oil painting after a 25 hiatus getting through a career that demanded much of my time. I’ve forgotten so much and my sense of color is seriously lacking. I’m working on a landscape with an Icelandic church and your demonstration of this sky is just what I need to see. Thank you immensely.
Through your videos I am learning how to PAINT with paint, instead of draw with paint, (ie. trying to make paint behave like pencils.) Didn’t realize I’d been doing that til I started watching your channel. Now I’m seeing paint with new eyes. 🙏🏼🌹You’re a great teacher, thanks.
Well Stuart! I've only just found your channel. At first I was put off a little for a couple of reasons. I'm an acrylic painter, and your style was just so different than anything I'm used to I wondered if I should bother. But after watching a few more, realized I well and truly love your style. I obtained a set of oil paint purely by accident some time ago thinking it was a set of acrylics. The set was only $5 but missing several colors, hence the cheap price. I've replaced the missing colors, also cheap since Oil is not my main media. So I'm going to try to attempt SOMETHING with the oils I have and I may as well use your technique which I happen to think produces stunning results! My painting style tends to produce more detailed realism than the "loose" style that you use. I would love to learn how to do that. Thank you for sharing your wonderful tutorials. Cheers Stuart! If you will permit, let me give you suggestion which you may or not take to. Kitchen Paper. There is another material called shop towels. Used mostly in auto mechanic shops, it is similar, but if you over use a piece it will NOT leave any crumbling paper on your painting. They are blue and are also found often at window cleaning stations at gas pumps. I always grab a few extras whenever I clean my windshield. Anyway, thanks again for sharing your knowledge. Cheers! (I've put your book in my Amazon shopping cart)
Hi Stuart, just to let you know I watched this video and enjoyed every bit of it. As a follower of your tutorials I have also visited most of your UA-cam programmes because I love landscape painting too and I find your tutorials very informative. And as you know already, I attempted to have a go at doing a similar scene last year using your methodical approach. I have also participated in adding some comments too in the past. I hope you will continue to demonstrate your skill and look forward to more of the same from you.
A very beautiful painting. One thing I'm not happy with is Sunshine going through the trees early in the morning. The sunshine going threw the mist and the trees is a beautiful site I have not been happy with in my painting. Others have complimented me but I'm missing something. Oh and I not only watch your videos to the end, I watch them several times to the end. Thank you.
I'm a recent newcomer to your videos and I love them. I enjoy watching you paint and the explanations, directions and humour. It doesn't matter to me whether your arm gets in the way or you've got glare on the painting. It's what you do that counts. I've been painting for a while but I've really learned a few things from you (practical and artistic) for which I am grateful. Please keep making more videos. Cheers, Jake
I am one of the ones that watched the whole video in one go. And i really like to see you in the shot from time to time. And that the video issn't too smooth and slick. I like it the way it is. And you should not excuse yourself for being in the way so you can have your mind with the painting and with what you are talking about. I have learn something today by watching you paint :D
i watched till the end! glad i did, you're comments r funny, and i like the attitude you have about not letting mistakes get to you because there is always a fix!!Thank you!
I enjoy very much love the colours choice all inspiration and imagination wonder full I wish one day I will be able to cope your style thank very much for teaching your style of painting .

Listening to the brushstroke sounds to determine the pressure he’s using is a brilliant point. Hadn’t even occurred to me.

I may not watch the entire video in one go but I will watch the entire video eventually - all of them! Thank you for enlightening and entertaining me.
I watched to the end and loved every moment!
Adrienne.. I am compelled to watch to the end, every video, even when viewing more than once.
Yes, I'm still here Stuart, along with loads more of your subscribers, I'm sure. I have watched this video before and having watched it for the second time I've found that I've understood you're teaching technique more. Love your work, thank you, you help to make my day.

I watched both Part 1 & 2. I'm not only learning so much but also entertained by Stuart's offbeat and amusing commentary. Thank you, Stuart!
I love the transformation from the begining

Saw this to the end. Thank you. Have a good night.
I have made Stuart my Saturday morning coffee ritual. I have taken up painting again thanks to you Stuart. Gotten two done and three more started.
Have watched to the end two or three times. Fantastic!

"Trust me. I am an artist". You are very educational, and also quite funny.
Love the painting, especially the sky.
He was a painter -
Makoto Sakai, not a great one, but memorable. It’s great. Thank you.
Watched till the end brilliant as usual!!
POWERFUL LIFE - powerful dramatic sky!
Really great texture!!!!
Going to give this style of painting a try, thank you
And I watched it again to the end - I am learning and practicing so much. Thank you Stuart
How could anyone not watch to the end? I guess that makes me a compulsive hanger on. I’ve learnt so much from you. Thank you Stuart.
Thanks, Jim! You're welcome!
Just wanted to say a very special thank you. Your painting has affected my life in such a positive way!
This is a beautiful painting. Love it and thank you for sharing it.
Yep...I'm a hanger on person! Always watch it all and listen to it all....! Always interesting and wonderful hearing you chat and watching you paint!!
I am always a repeat viewer until the end. I learn slowly I guess. Love the whole process. Thank you.
Thanks for watching!
Wow, thank you, Elizabeth, I'll tell Graham! Stuart :-)
Wonderful painting, lesson and humor. I always watch the entire video get nicely relaxed for your tutorials. Thank you
The depth in this sky is incredible! Thank you for sharing your skill with us!
Yes I am catching up with this pretty late (July 2021) since the time you published it and want to say that I thoroughly enjoyed it. Yes watched every bit all to the end. Thank you for all the tips and lessons.
Go and watch another one now...
Cheers
Wow, thank you!
It’s easy to watch an expert till the end keep going Stuart because of you all my work goes to friends rather than chucked
I watch beginning to end. I will never get to go to France as I don't like airplanes or boats. I do enjoy seeing a painting start to finish. THANKYOU!
Watched to the end. Enjoyed every minute.
Your videos are perfect. Don’t worry about being in the way at times. The knowledge you share is exactly what we want to hear so keep talking. Thanks for sharing. By the way, good stitching on the underarm of your jumper!
Thank you so much! I do my own repairs :-)
Explained so simply and the outcome is so beautiful. Thanks Stuart.
Yep, watched it til the end! Your videos are never too long! You always make it quite interesting to watch... and I like you sense of humour! Beautiful sky!
I hung on til the end. Not only do you teach painting tips but great tidbits and tips. Enjoyed hearing the Reddit story.
I sincerely love your art works
love your new ideas stewie!!! I think this is one of your better ones!
I’ve stayed till the end and I think it’s the second time I’ve done so. Love your work.
Hi Stuart! How on earth can people complain about your videos? I
say, we are not at Warner Bros studios here, we are in your studio and it it is for free. Thank you Stuart, right now I am streaming your videos in the middle of rhe night, while making chrismas presents by hand. Hope to start painting soon again. Hugs and love to your wife.
I always watch to the end.
I truly enjoyed this more than the first time - both to the end. Wishing you full health.
Another work of great ART.... I must just about have every video you have produced..... Many thanks for your inspiration!!!!
I like watching to the end...I live with big sky and your skies are very real. Thank you for sharing.
Thank you so much for your videos. I love your technique and am excited to try it. I have purchased a sheet of plywood and have been sanding my little heart out. So away I go.
I like an extra colour in the sky gives the painting a modern look
I love your videos because it's like painting the work myself. It's very relaxing, ttherapeutic and informative.
Watched to the end as I really want my sky paintings to improve - Thank you Stuart
Thanks and worth spending the time with you. I often watch several times!
The Illusions of Detail video is the very first video of yours that I watched. It's what made me want to use your painting technique.
Through your videos I am learning how to PAINT with paint, instead of draw with paint, (ie. trying to make paint behave like pencils.)
Didn’t realize I’d been doing that til I started watching your channel.
Your skies are emotionally captivating and the process you go through to achieving that effect makes oil painting so simple. Like your long tutorials.
Thank you so much 😀
Hi Stuart, just to let you know I watched this video and enjoyed every bit of it.
Thank you.
You’re voice is very calm, video is fine, love it all. Thank you.
I watch the whole video but two sessions. Love love it
I watched till the very end. And I love it when you call the highlights 'twinklies'💜🌼 You paint the most beautiful skies Sir!!😍
Thank you so much 😀
I'm a recent newcomer to your videos and I love them.
Hanging on to every word...to the very end...very beautiful work..
The sky is excellent. It would be worthwhile working on the landscape. Thanks Stuart , enjoyed watching
Yes Stuart, I am still here and I did watch to the end! Great Video! 🌹
i watched till the end! glad i did, you're comments r funny, and i like the attitude you have about not letting mistakes get to you because there is always a fix!!Thank you!
I enjoy very much love the colours choice all inspiration and imagination wonder full I wish one day I will be able to cope your style thank very much for teaching your style of painting .
