- Recorded off-air when first broadcast on BBC Radio 2 on 15 October 1989 at 14.05. I used a C120 tape (60 minutes on either side) to get both acts without a break, but that meant the tape was extremely thin. You can hear the result.

My brother, around 1987 time, suddenly hijacked the opening march to this work, and after his favourite football team had come good in their sport. He suddenly started singing "Beer, beer, we want more beer, everybody's cheering get the f*****g beer in," to the main tune of it. Not sure who he got those words from.

Valerie Masterson's voice has matured beautifully on this recording since recording Mabel with D'Oyly Carte opera on Decca in 1968. A great recording. Thank you Chris.

I first saw this in Glasgow when I was 18yrs old, I also saw the Mikado, I was captivated by both performances.
I have loved all classical music since the age of 12, I also remember the C120 cassettes they were good to start recording with but the longer you played them the playback faltered and you are correct the problem was the thinness of the tape. I have recently started to play my classical recordings some of which are 50yrs old, my intentions are to make this wonderful music available for all generations to listen to.

"Off-air" means I recorded it from the radio while it was being broadcast.

Do you have any idea if there is an available recording of the BBC 1989 release of The Mikado with Richard Van Allan, Derek Hammond Stroud and Forbes Robinson? It was on BBC Radio2.
I'm sure someone recorded it off-air, as I did with the ones I've posted. It won't be available commercially, though.
The first pirate sounds like Phil from Time Team.
Yes, like Phil, he was born in Dorset and then emigrated to Cornwall.

Retrieved from my hard drive where it had been all along. The cassette has now gone in the bin.
I don't know who the principal oboist of the BBC Concert Orchestra was at this time. Perhaps someone can help?

The oboe on the Mikado is a favorite of mine. It's a most pretty instrument when used properly.

@@MrReco12 Gilbert is underestimated. Have you read his play "The Hooligan"?
@@webrarian No. But i know that he made fun of British society quite a bit. "I am, the monarch of the sea" is a classic.
@@MrReco12 It's more serious than "fun". I think he puts a humorous coating on a serious message. That's why he was a great writer.
