Budgie were not part of nwobhm.They formed in Cardiff in 1967 under the name of Hills Contemporary Grass.They had built up a solid fan base through relentless gigging long before the emergence of bands such as Saxon,Iron Maiden etc.

Wow! Nice collection of NWOBHM groups! Diamond Head is a huge favorite of mine (got into them before listening to Metallica), and "Borrowed Time" is one of my top albums of all time. Mammoth is pretty good, too; guitarist Kenny Cox was in another NWOBHM group named More, whose "Blood & Thunder" album was hailed as one of the genre's most under-appreciated releases ever. Great presentation once again.
I’ve got the two More albums but have them grouped with my full boxes for record labels Rock Candy and Wounded Bird.

I always loved many British bands. Many people are covering different types of songs and making heavy metal hits. Metallica did many covers but the original bands did great too. I will check out some of these because they sound interesting. I grew up with Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin, and Deep Purple. Then moving on to other metal bands.
Yeah if you liked those bands then definitely check out some of these. You’ll be surprised.
Wow Brendon, you have some really cool stuff there. I only own a CD reissue of Angel Witch’s debut album and the 2019 album Angel of Light that they did, so I only have the first and last of their discography. You have got some rare hard to find stuff there. I really like Budgie too, they started around 1970 and were contemporary with Black Sabbath.
Completely forgot about this video, have been getting majorly into NWOBHM myself over the last couple of years, re watching this again! 🤣👍🏻
interesting Brendon.Alot of these bands I never heard of.I do love Budgie.I have that small boxset.
There are so many that are way under the radar but deserve attention.
Great stuff there, so glad you picked out Budgie, great band, Never Turn Your Back On A Friend my particular favourite album I highly recommend.
I saw them many times during the mid 70’s usually no more than a few hundred people in the audience, saw them once with a band called Strife they had an excellent live show think they made one album, if you manage to find it check out the track Indian Dream.
Around this time my workmate was talking about a new band called Iron Maiden, my friend used to drink with them in a local pub!!! He was a great Diamond Head fan too. Steve⚡️

Yes I mentioned Samson in relation to Bruce Dickinson and that they would be included in the next round with the likes of Saxon and Tygers Of Pan Tang.
Ah my era and grew up on this music,i have lots of Neat record 7 inch records.One of my favourites was Heavy Pettin'.Their debut was produced by Brian May and Mack.Went to 3 day rock festival recently and one of the bands was Praying Mantis.Budgie were awesome in the day.Did you check out the latest Diamond Head release of their re-recording of the white album with some interesting covers tagged on the end.
Undoubtedly my favorite era of music. Was fifteen in 1979 as Iron Maiden-s/t and Saxon-Denim and Leather both epitomizes NWOBHM. Nice box of cds, Brendon.

NOWBHM is one of my favorite genre in heavy music..... and you have shown a lot of killer bands and some lesser know, however not been nit picking but one you did not have at least in that box is Quartz, i discover them a couple of years ago, really good stuff i highly recommend listening to them, i'm actually looking for copies of their three albums they put out. cheers and be well
Quartz is fantastic. Being famous for having features Geoff Nichols from Black Sabbath. I’ve got their whole catalogue including their recent reunion album. As I said, lots that isn’t in the boxes. Just like I don’t keep Def Leppard or Iron Maiden in the box either. My favorite Quartz album is their 2nd album Stand Up And Fight. Their 3rd album is also really good but not produced as well.

Nice box. I was 17 at the start of the NWOBHM - if you take 1979 as year zero - and still enjoy listening to a lot of them today.
Because I was there and thereabouts at the start I'm one of those people, however, who will always think of Def Leppard as being an important and integral part of the NWOBHM - at least up to Pyromania - I can still recall hearing their first EP played on radio 1 late at night by John Peel - who wasnt into HM at all - sometime in 1979 and thinking that this was a band to keep an eye on. For me, Maiden, Saxon, Saxon and the Tygers of Pan Tang soon became favourites over them though.
I dont really see Budgie as NWOBHM, however I can understand why they are in the box as their Power Supply album with John Thomas replacing Tony Bourge came out in 1980 at the start of the NWOBHM and reflected the style enough that they were able to get a headline slot on the Friday noght at the Reading Festival in 1982 - Diamond Head were on beofre them and here were a lot of other NWOBHM bands at the festival - incidentally Iron Maiden headlined the Saturday and Michael Schenker the Sunday, and yes I was there.
One band you didnt have in the box that were one of those that started just before the NWOBHM kicked off but had a couple of really good NWOBHM albums released in the early 1980's and would have fitted in after Praying Mantis is Quartz - their first album was produced by Tony Iommi and released in 1977 then in 1980 they did Stand up and Fight and 1983 Against all Odds - all three very good albums - got to see them live supporting GIllan in 1980 alongside White Spirit - who as we know had Janick Gers on guitar later to join Gillan and end up in Iron Maiden.
Cool collection, but Def Leppard(although they don't like it) were surely the forerunners of the Nwobhm. Their debut ep, and the first 2 albums introduces has that typical new fresh sound to the world. Later they became radiofriendly(with still some killer tracks), but High 'n Dry and On Through The Night are "pure sang" Nwobhm albums.
They were certainly part of it. I just don’t classify them as such because they outgrew the scene. So they get filed along with Glam Metal for me. Mostly because that’s the era that I found the band.
Great show as ever Brendon. Have you ever dared to try and work out how much you spent a year on music? I bet it's a fortune! If you like NWOBHM you should check out the relatively new metal band Primitai. I'm sure you'd like them !👍
One year I tracked everything I bought so I could determine the amount. It was a pretty penny for sure.
Marshall Law are the loudest band I've ever heard. It was actually painful.

I have lots of Magnum as well but I don’t think they were ever considered part of the NWOBHM. At least I’ve never heard them associated with it.
They weren't Brendon ,I saw them as support act for Budgie in 1975 ( Birmingham town hall UK) if memory serves me correctly.
I have one question Brendon? You don't have any label or anything written on those boxes, so how do you know which one is which, and what is in it?

I like Budgie's music, but I can't stand that guy's vocals! Awful, to my ears. He gets compared to Geddy Lee, but I would take Geddy over him any day of the week. It's the one thing that prevents me from liking that band. It's easy to see why they have remained a cult band for their entire career. I think Diamondhead is excellent, and I love Girlschool. That re-recorded Hit & Run is excellent!
