    Just a quick look into my updated fire kit for camping. There are 3 items missing, which are on the way. From Exotac Titanlight to Zippo Matches to tinder items and tools. If you have questions, or comments, please let me know below. This kit has been and is fluid - I used to have a LOT more, but started pairing down beginning of the year, and it is nearly perfect for me.
    Note: This is NOT a bushcraft kit, so there are things that wont be there - like flint/steel/charcloth or heavy in tinder.

    Nice start. Try adding flint and steel,char cloth and tin, pencil sharpener, Fresno lense, and a little more tinder like wet fire.

    My Fire Kit consist of a pair of Reading Glasses for Solar Ignition, and a Key Ring Liquid Match, which gives me both a Spark Ignition Source with the Ferrocerium striker, and flame ignition with a wide variety of common fuels. A Zippo would work too but i already have enough in my pockets.
    3 independent sources of ignition with two common items.

    I am a huge fan of Was impregnated cotton. Therefore I am a fan of fatrope and fireplugs.
    I am also cheap so I make my own fireplugs because I can make 250 for under $20.

    Celluloid guitar picks, very combustable and small. Great kit. I would add a micro , keychain size flashlight, or glow stick for xtra light in case you get caught out near dark and need to light a fire.

    HEY THERE !! The problem is that you have all your eggs in one basket , don't lose it . I think you should break it on down INto 3 small kits or two . Carry a small fire kit in your pocket and a larger one in your pack . A waterproof pill bottle is great to hold items , it's light , it can hold multiple bic lighters with cotton too . LOL , I DIDN'T SEE THE MINI KIT YET LOL AT ME jumping off a cliff , But that's what I'm saying , a small kit in case you get separated from your gear, I make fireteen , it's a strip of denim jeans , about the side of dentyene gum , dipped in hot wax and folded up in foil . Next time you throw out and old pair of jeans , cut them up into useable sizes for making charcloth . Even a zippo lighter with extra flints and a wick stowed inside the lighter is a good option . It's not a bad idea to carry a bottle of 5 oz lighter fluid . Even with a zippo thats out of fluid you can spark up a piece of char cloth , the zippo case , with the inside taken out , can be held together with with wire to make charcloth . I sold both my hogs , a 73 iron head on a 45 service car frame and my 75 iron head , streched out to 8 feet long . BE SAFE ON THE ROAD , SALUTE FROM A VET

      I have multiple smaller kits that are in all my bags, from the full camping bag to day hike bags. And when I am on the bike, I take my pipe kit with me, which has plenty of good-smelling, fire-making gear. this is just the main kit that goes into my main camping bag. And salute back from a vet.

    I have a True Utility firelight on my keychain, similar to the one in your mini kit, and a ferro rod in one of my pockets. And my Victorinox Fieldmaster is also always on my keychain. I have the True Utility waterproof case the firelight came in as a tinderbox with a mini BIC lighter and matches. The rest is home made and natural tinder and a candle wrapped in jute twine. I have never needed more than one regular match to light a fire. And i lived in a swamp all of my life so finding dry tinder and kindling is a challenging thing here especially during a storm. The problem with a big fire kit in my experience is you don't have it with you when it hits the fan. This is also the reason i always carry a water bottle pouch on my belt too with a 0,5 liter water bottle of stainless steel when i head out in regular temperature. High temperatures i carry a large Nalgene bottle in a pouch with nesting cup and other water equipment.

    Yep , I just pulled out all of my packs and upgrading and dumping all the extra weight items , Like the bag you have your fire kit in. It's a nice bag but too many small bags means extra weight to carry and it all adds up . Here is a very inexpensive item for fire tender . At wally world you can buy for about a $1 the small mini Duraflame fire starters , you can shave off small amounts to add to your tinder bundle as needed , they weigh about 4.5 oz ea. I'm not much on the Vaseline cotton ball thing but I do use that option , but , I use Vics vapor rub , it works the same and I have a medicine that helps with coughs and also works as a muscle rub . I use a small jar about the size of a diabetic strip container . The way I see it , is that in real life there is no such a thing as cheating in a real true survival situation . Carry anything you need for fire making . again enjoyed the video , salute from a vet

    • @ADVRaven
      @ADVRaven  3 роки тому

      I'm not a fan of the Vaseline and cotton balls either. Just messy, especially since there is so many other things, and enough in nature that most of the time, I never end up even using my tinder. That Exotac lighter in the kit gets used the most. 2 years now, only have had to fill it once. again, salute back from a vet.

    @brianreed8699 3 роки тому +2

    All of those items are high dollar. Zippo stuff, maxpedition, etc. And you have multiple ways to start a fire but no way to maintain the spark. That kit needs tinder. Some cotton balls and PJ, dryer lint, gel alcohol/hand sanitizer, hexamine tabs or trioxane, wet fire, wax impregnated hard wood shavings"tumble weeds", etc.. And all the stuff in your small Altoids container needs to stay in the bag and not on your motorcycle.
    Make another small kit for your motorcycle.
    P.S. You also forgot to put a magnesium bar in the bag.

    • @ADVRaven
      @ADVRaven  3 роки тому +1

      There is plenty of tinder, and more got added after this video. One of the things I like doing is collecting tinder or processing it. This is not a survival kit, it is a fire kit used when I am camping. It has been awesome, and has changed, since this video. You takes what makes you feel comfortable with your skills, I will take what I am comfortable with.
      Who cares what the stuff costs - I am not spending anyone else's money but my own.

    I find that lint from the clothes dryer trap works great for starting with a ferro rod and has never let me down yet. I just put it in the sealable baggie and mix it with bits of fat wood sawdust. Your kit is quite the technological wonder - more advanced than my first aid kit. Do you do long hikes?

    Good kit but massively overkill. The problem with all you fire lighting gear being in one pouch is when that pouch gets lost. I have a lighter tied to me, other lighters split in different pouches and a ferro rod in my survival kit. You need more tinder. In fact pretty much all I use is wet fire and a lighter.

    You obviously know what you are doing, the plastic bag for your tinder shows that. This is my POV not a criticism (there's enough of that on YT). Do you have a smaller kit for when you're putting in the miles? Two is one and one is none untill you have to carry it. Separate cotton pads and petroleum jelly or wax have multiple uses separately, together only one. giant matches are great but smaller storm matches are less bulky and lighter. Are two big ferro rods necessary if you only use them occasionally? In the end it's horses for courses really, your circumstances and environment are different to mine, happy trails!!

    • @ADVRaven

      Yes, I have multiple fire kits. One smaller one that lives in my canteen case that goes with my camping gear. I think I have some older and maybe newer videos of the other smaller kits.
      The most I camp away from "civilization" is at most a week, but that is usually not far from either the bike or car. I dont do a ton of backpacking - my knees wont allow more than a couple miles at time.
      2 Ferro Rods - heh, no not necessary. Especially since I only just practice throwing sparks. I use the lighter 99% of the time. The ferro rods get more use in the backyard trying new techniques than in the field.

  • @tomsmith6094

    Why do you need all fire starters? Why did you bought cotton arounds ? If you can make your own cotton arounds.i been doing that cotton arounds with candy wax with crayons they will burn 9 minutes longer and hotter .you only need lighter and Ferro rod not matches and Sparks neither .I been carrying only Ferro rod 1" 7 inch and my lighter and my cotton arounds with wax double wax I using them all time they never failed on me doesn't matter if the wood is soaking wet they will catch on fire Plus they are water proof and wind proof the cotton arounds you buy them in a dollar store for a dollar and wax too the crayons I made over 500 fire starters I always carried them

  • @DrGurple

    This is a terrible idea. It’s a ton of ways to make fire, in one bag. Your fire kit should be a couple lighters scattered about your stuff, tinder/ and firestarters scattered about, and a ferro rod in your pocket, tied to your belt. Maybe a spare in the bottom of your pack. Keep it simple stupid

  • @basp-ef7jx
    @basp-ef7jx 3 роки тому +4

    I don't think it big enough. What about extinguishing a fire? You should probably have a fire extinguisher. That tiny pouch won't even hold any fire wood. How can you have a fire kit without wood. A large backpack might be more appropriate. Another fire source that would be helpful in a survival situation is a jet engine. Those can usually be found on Navy and or Air Force bases. Just a helpful tip, or "life hack" two is one, one is none. Then you probably need duplicates of every single thing in the kit, right? One fire kit is none fire kit. More is always better. And who cares about weight when hiking or camping? Nobody, that's who!
