James says "Stephanie, I have discovered something on my own" and immediately I am reminded of a four year old who brings home a drawing that they made in preschool and proudly shows it to their mother.
Eric is worried what a divorce from Sheila will look like to his kids after chasing and impregnating the former fiancee of one of his sons. The ship has sailed in the department of saving face in that area, lol 😊
I never really understood why Sheila blamed and was more mad at Stephanie than with eric, after those last couple of episodes he is clearly the one gaslighting her and being more mean and despicable to her than Stephanie ever was. Sheila went after Stephanie hard, but very half hearted after eric. Eric was the toxic, mean and dishonest person and she should be more hateful to him than to Stephanie.
Sheila should be FURIOUS with Eric, Steph didn't deserve her fury nearly as bad as Eric did! I mean he is SO WEAK that he has to lie/with hold the truth whatever you wanna call it, about that vasectomy. I mean be a man and grown some Eric!!!! Ugh.
Stephanie was more subtle about it - she basically told Eric "you had to make that mistake yourself because otherwise you wouldn't have taken my word for it that it was a bad idea". 😂
_"I've gotten my son's ex-lover and my ex-lover's daughter's pregnant."_ _"I didn't have my ex-wife under contract when she invented Belief."_ _"I've had a vase c to my but my wife says she's pregnant."_ How does Elliot keep a straight face around Eric?!
*Stephanie vs Sheila > Taylor vs Brooke* This whole episode revolves around a single compelling storyline with every scene showing a different angle of the story and once again control of the plot comes down to Stephanie vs Sheila. Stephanie of course is trying to hasten the end of Eric's marriage (to write the ending of this storyline) while Sheila is trying to keep her marriage alive (to keep the story going). Both James and Connor are in the classic supporting role, giving Stephanie and Sheila the advice and plot points they need to move things in their direction - an interesting parallel since (as I've argued before), Connor and James occupy a similar "space" on the show and the arrival of James crowded out Connor and made him less relevant. And finally Stephanie assumes her classic role as the show's Reliable Narrator, outlining for Eric (and the viewer) what his recent marriages were about: he married Brooke to feel young and he married Sheila to feel loved. Her plot summary and the poignant scene between Stephanie and Eric underscores how firmly this storyline is rooted in characterization. It's all very well structured and feels like classic B&B, a sharp contrast to many of the recent episodes which also revolved around a single storyline (Bridge honeymoon and Morocco) but one that puts plot over character. Ridge/Brooke/Taylor are obviously major stars on the show but their storyline is currently being played out in exotic locales and outlandish territory far away from the fashion-and-family center of gravity in LA where the show is strongest.
I thought you would find this episode worthy of analysis Nick! 😊 And you are so right - this episode is much stronger than the ones centered on the Brooke/Ridge/Taylor/Omar storyline, where we both agree the plot driven storytelling is a major weakness (in fact, it is such an obvious weakness that it leaves me grasping at straws and focusing on the only character driven elements of the story - Mustapha and Ahmed, who I'm sure aren't _supposed_ to outshine the main characters but in my mind they do). In fact, the moment I heard Connor tell Sheila to sit down and listen, I immediately thought of you, and my mind went "there goes Connor once again helping a woman in need shape the plot to her advantage"!
Well said! And again it's also because this storyline is being carried by strong actors (Susan Flannery, Kimberlin Brown and John McCook) while the Morocco storyline is being carried by weak actors (Ron Moss, Hunter Tylo and KKL). Even the supporting actors in the LA storyline are stronger (Scott Thompson Baker and Ian Buchanan) than the ones in the Morocco storyline (Kabir Bedi and the others with bad accents in his palace).
@@jonfoersterI agree about Susan and kimberly being strong actors and have two decent actors on their side here (Ian and Scott). John was never a decent actor in my eyes. Hunter is the better actress of those three said. She progressed through the years in my opinion and became a pretty decent actress in later times.
Great analysis! Brad Bell tried to shift the show away from Stephanie vs Brooke toward Taylor vs Brooke which is a less compelling rivalry. Thankfully (partly due to Hunter Tylo's frequent exits) the show became about Stephanie vs Brooke again but by then Brad had already ruined all the characters anyway and the show had already deteriorated into camp.
