    You can actually get your maps to look good in Campaign Cartographer, especially if you are using one of the art sets contributed by one of the pros like Mike Schley... it's just that Campaign Cartographer is not an art program and doesn't have an a UI anything like an art program so you have to do a lot of work to get your mind around basically using CAD as a paint brush, doing everything "backwards", and then hitting the "now make everything look better, rather than run smoother" button at the very end.
    So no, not a scam. Just not what most folks are looking for when they go looking for a tool to help them draw maps, since it doesn't let you draw anything.

      This. The advantage of CC3+ is it's scaling abilities. For just a quick map for a DM running a personal game... no, it's not the right program. For someone creating full maps for printed work, where you want to be able to scale up and down easily, and keep scales consistent between maps... yeah. it takes a lot of work to learn, but it's great for what it's designed for. (Most of us don't need what it's designed for.)

      I got CC3+ on a bundle with the dungeon and city modules. At first it was incomprehensible and I did feel kinda scammed, but with the help of some videos I did manage to get a handle on it and start making some pretty decent progress with it and the weird CAD mindset actually started to grow on me. I... don't consider myself an artist of any kind, but I am decent at understanding systems. And CC3+'s systems have a certain amount of versatility you wouldn't expect.
      Plus, I have those texture presets that help me get over my paralyzing fear of not picking the right color or not being able to make the terrain look good.

  • @Strykar86

    Lots of free map/cartography assets out there, especially photoshop brushes that can be used with Krita. I'd also suggest creating a layer with your continent texture and then a black layer below that. Draw on the black with white for your continents. Throw them into their own group. When finished, you click "a" inherit alpha button on your texture layer(make sure it is above the continent alpha you just drew). You can apply the stroke and glow effects to your group. You can also use just white on transparent and that way you can move continents around easier.

    These are nifty techniques, and your map doesn't look terrible, but if I were to open up Photoshop, Krita, etc. there's no way I would have been able to figure this out without watching your video. And yet that's exactly what you did with CC+; you wanted to immediately intuit how to use it with no help from the guide (which you obviously didn't read), or the wealth of youtube tutorials out there (which are pretty hard to miss). No wonder you thought you got scammed. If you don't want to put in the work to learn CC+, that's fine. If you purchased CC+ thinking it was going to behave like Inkarnate and limit your options so as to hold your hand all the way through, I can understand your disappointment. But don't poison the well for others who might be looking to make their maps amazing. Yes, CC+ was a steep learning curve, but it was so worth it. My maps look amazing now, and my players are consistently impressed. You owe Profantasy an apology.

    • @devRat
      @devRat  2 роки тому +2

      Actually I never watched any tutorials for krita/photoshop. I figured it out by clicking around. You used the right word. "Intuit." A well designed program should be intuitive. The learning curve on krita was way quicker than that of CC3. If you spent the same amount of time learning Krita or photoshop that you did on CC3+ I bet your maps would be just as beautiful as they are now, but with even more options.
      I've admitted in other comments calling Profantasy a scam was an exaggeration. It is a real product. They are selling what they are advertising, that's true, but it is absolutely not worth what they are charging.

    campaign cartographer was on the market long before all the web-based map creators were and it was a good tool for anyone who wanted to design a map of his own. You can actually make good looking maps with it, but it requires a lot of time and practice and it is not very user friendly. In todays standards it is rather old-fashioned. It is not a scam. you could say photoshop is a scam if you don't know what you are doing there too... it simply requires some of your time and effort to learn.

  • @pureleaf6686
    @pureleaf6686 2 роки тому +35

    That's a brutal entry xD. GMs spend hours making their maps and not many would say they suck. But I'll humor you
    I've spent a fair amount of time creating maps on lined paper, grid paper and rollout maps. They definitely didn't suck and still made for good runs. When I say I'll humor you though, I definitely agree there is always room for improvement.
    I upgraded from there by venturing into the realm of free software. I've tried a handful and nothing stuck. So I actually went back to pen and paper. Campaign Cartographer 2 is something I did stumble across and it was very appealing at the time. But it does have a bit of a more retro look when compared to newer software these days.
    Fast forward to today. I'm starting back up after a small hiatus and this time around I decided on looking into software. I've always held off on Campaign Cartographer 3 but decided now is the time to buy. And I've never been more stoked in my life when it comes to map making!
    - Pen & Paper? At least PCs won't beat you up too bad since you did everything by hand. Actually makes for some extremely enjoyable adventures. HIGHLY underrated in my humble opinion
    - CC2? Outdated and doesn't hold up well
    - Free software? My advice is to watch videos before installing and trying software, programs or other websites. I wasted countless hours running a few adventures in software and programs that didn't stick. After getting a good handle on how two or three worked, I realize now as I sit that it was a colossal waste of time.
    - CC3+? I've purchased it and I'm going to give it a go! I've watched a good amount of videos on it and already feel like I can throw some maps together fairly quickly. As much time as GMs spend preparing, I'm willing to sink some serious time in to learn this software. But I'm going to start small and ease my way into it gradually.
    However, as a recap, what works for others won't work for everybody. One advantage of trying different methods and deciding not to use them is that it may just make you appreciate the methods you do know how to use. For me, it made me appreciate Pen & Paper more. 100% viable even in today's standards.

    • @devRat
      @devRat  2 роки тому +8

      I absolutely agree. If you are prepared to put in the effort, nothing compares to pen and paper.
      If you are prepared to put in the effort you can make Campaign Cartographer look nice too.
      If you are prepared to put in the effort, you could make a photo-realistic 3D world in blender as well.
      But I reckon that most GMs buy CC because they are looking for a tool to make their job easier. Not only does CC not deliver that, but I argue it's the wrong tool for the job entirely.
      You are a great example of this. All of the time you could be spending preparing for a session, you are instead learning their software. Now you may have the time to spare, but not all GMs do. In just a few minutes I can show you the fundamentals of map making in Krita, and after that your imagination is the limit.
      Thanks for your comment! Great perspective from someone with a lot of experience.

    • @pureleaf6686
      @pureleaf6686 2 роки тому +3

      @@devRat I'm not the best artist in the world but my pen and paper has been concise yet fairly simple in nature.
      To those on the outside looking in, it hasn't been impressive. As a matter of fact, after the adventure, I don't even want to look! LOL. That's about to change.
      I do have blender, GIMP, photoshop etc. However...
      --- You are DEFINITELY correct. Krita is A LOT faster than anything I've ever used in my life. So I tip my hat to ya on sharing the knowledge you've found. I'd say CC3+ still looks more impressive from a varying color perspective once you're at an advanced level. But in CC, you can't whip out full overland maps in 5 to 15 minutes like you can in Krita.
      -CC3+ does have a steep learning curve. So for those GMs, like you've mentioned, who don't have as much time, there are much faster ways to generate Overland maps and Adventure, or Dungeon, maps.
      Right now, my plan is to create full, immersive campaigns for older editions of D&D. For example, Basic, AD&D, 2nd edition and 4th edition. People I know generally all play 5th edition. Pathfinder and 3.5 is here and there as well. But people aren't receptive to even try the older editions. So I plan on surprising people playing newer editions or even newcomers to the hobby. At least they'll be able to say they've tried that edition afterwards. Even if only to make them appreciate their favorite edition more.
      Thanks for your response! I'd say we're all in this as a community and the more GMs and Players know, the better the experience for everyone

I have used Profantasy since it first came out. And I go back to it periodically. And yes it's expensive. I think it's unfair to call Campaign Cartographer a "scam." It does what it says it does, it just requires more work. Also, my go-to terrain generator is a Profantasy product, Fractal Terrains, mainly because it provides plenty of options to create realistic continent shapes (although it doesn't really account for things like plate tectonics or glaciers carving up the land) with customizable temperature, precipitation and climate generation, and it can give you multiple map projections for your world maps that can actually take into account the curvature of a globe and the distortion of area and distance a flat map can cause. The closest to it I've seen in full-world map generation is Azgaar's Fantasy Map Generator.

    So, if write a book like Harry Potter which has a dozen maps in its 360 pages, would that mean I'd have to pay Inkarnate $25/year so long as my book sold, which could then be the rest of my life?
    Could Inkarnate change that price, increasing it?
    Could Inkarnate say it wants a percentage of sales of that book?
    Not that I have something ready to sell for vast amounts of money, or any money, but my creative hopes of making maps for my fantasy world I've been dreaming, playing in games as a Game Master, and developing over the past 40+ years, ... the idea that maybe Inkarnate could say it wants a percentage take that Inkarnate decides what that percent is of my maps for my world that I make because I make them in Inkarnate causes me to avoid using Inkarnate.
    However, it would be really nice to use something better than a spline based drawing program to draw my maps with.

      I mean, I'm no lawyer so I can't speak as to the legality of what you're doing, but I personally would just use krita (obviously). If you really want to use inkarnate commercially I would consult a legal expert. Copyright law can be very complex and it's letter can be very deceiving.
      For what it's worth I make no money from UA-cam (nor am I trying to at the moment).

      @@devRat I'm saying, as someone with little to no resources but with dreams that maybe, like winning the lottery, which is a very low chance, I have success... I do not want someone like Inkarnate having a string attached to my creativity that they get to decide how large a slice of what my creativity makes. Probability is I will never make any money... that has been my life's luck... But, if I do, I do not want to give a blank check to someone like Inkarnate to take a slice of that.
      That is my issue and question with Inkarnate???
      Maybe this is not a problem?
      But, I've been given the concern that Inkarnate can define its slice over what it takes from any creative product I use which is created using their system. That scares me away from using their product.
      I know I am not alone in this.
      I know there are LOTS of others with the same concern, which is where I gained my concern from.
      What I cannot figure out is whether this is a real concern or not.

    The Krita map that was produced here looks very amateurish and nothing of the quality that CC3+ can produce. One can learn how to make a nice looking map with CC3+ in less that 30 minutes by watching just one CC3+ tutorial. The link to that tutorial is: ua-cam.com/video/LlpfzlsMK2g/v-deo.html There are more advanced techniques in CC3+ that one can learn to make even better looking maps but not necessary for nice basic maps. As with anything that we do in life It all depends how much time a person wants to devote their time to to become more advanced. But in this case or any other case for that matter, CC3+ is hard to beat!

    Can confirm photoshop is the best map creation tool. I made a genuinely photorealistic map of my world in 8 hours. How photorealistic? Well, everything I did was using brushes that I made from satalight photos of the earth, using colors picked from those photos. It looks real. It looks like someone took a picture out the window of a spaceship. No other program (aside from other image editors) will do that. And here's what I don't think any other image editor, even GIMP, can do... Slice that map into 256 square pixel tiles, export them in a specific file structure, and let me add them into a digital map with one line of code, so I have my own google maps style sat-view of my setting.
