I work in IT. I am most comfortable in a deep dark cold corner in a sub basement with no light or heat. Forgotten about till something breaks.

Back office, telemarketing operations, medical uses; there are many industries where natural light and a view add absolutely no value; that paying a premium for views and natural light would be a waste.

The paralax on my 65" TV is crazed, it feels like that one scene from The Abyss.
Now I feel bad I'm not contributing in any meaningful way so:-
Carry on being an honest broker and therefore great person all round, you are one of the good ones Allan!

Ben Squire One office I visited had a wall of screens, configured so that it looked like a single monitor. It was hooked up to webcams at prime surfing spots, and game reserve water holes.
I have no idea how they did it, but the result was spectacular.

@@piggybank4875 So your are saying that a series of monitors can be used to create a virtual view?

Metro Manhattan Office Space, Inc. Yes. If your IT people get the right equipment (hardware and software) and the interior designer cooperates, most people will think that it is a window. You'll spend at least US$100,000 for the hardware.
If you can convince building management to let you put eight to ten cameras on the roof, and stream them to your setup, it is far more convincing than a livestream from Hawaii, or an African game reserve.

Pure class as always. I would recommend possibly including something about the "Fear of elevators" in the title of the video, as it's a really unique perspective and the type of people who have that issue might find this video better.

As a New Yorker living in Europe, these videos are great to get a feel for the city while abroad.

It's nice to hear about buildings with views that are less well-known. It gives greater depth to the discussion and makes NYC seem more interesting. I hope your business is doing well. Also, for overseas viewers, you might want to know that they often start with the ground floor, then first is one above, and so on, while in the US it became popular to speak of the first floor as ground, so we are one off.
Have you ever thought of a series on the different neighborhoods in NYC, what their "feel" is like, and what might draw people, both clients and the general public, to them? You have mentioned tech companies and loft space, for example. But that might also drive clients to your services if they get from you a tour of the city, what makes it tick, and how they might fit in to that. I don't mean every tiny neighborhood, but lots of people know Midtown, TriBeCa, SoHo (South of Houston Street, pronounced house-ton), Battery Park, Alphabet City, etc. You have essayed somewhat into that already, so eve once a month it would be interesting. Just a thought.

      Hi Charles:
The US designates floors differently. I travel to France frequently (my wife is French) and what would be the second floor in New York is actually the first floor. After traveling to France for 35 years I still haven't gotten used to it!!
Good suggestion regarding creating content regarding various New York City neighborhoods. The Chelsea, Hudson Yards and Grand Central videos got some play, but I don't know how many of the subscribers who are scattered worldwide really appreciated them. So the challenge it to create content that appeals to international subscribers who are not that familiar with Manhattan. I am open to any ideas that you or any of my subscribers suggest.

@@MetroManhattanOfficeSpace I have had European relatives visit and there are a lot of foreign UA-camrs who make videos about seeing NYC and being fascinated by the charming little things in addition to the famous stuff. If you search for English visits New York, German visits New York, you will get some ideas.

Fascinating? Is there some historical reason for why second floor ceilings are often somewhat higher than those for other floors?

    • @EliteGeeks
      @EliteGeeks 4 роки тому +6

Often there is a mechanical room there, electrical and data/phone - that 1 foot higher ceiling will keep the equipment from being spread out so instead of a phone closet needing to be 600sq it can be 400sq, also lots of the water pumping machinery is often located on those floors in the old days. Water pressure is usually still very strong on the second floor, which often is like the 3rd or 4th floor in a house. And them pumps used to be large. Another reason is heat... lots of that equipment generates heat and higher ceilings were often used to help with that problem, Schools built before the 70s in NYC often had ceilings over 12 feet high to make them more comfortable on hotter days.

@@EliteGeeks Thank you for that reply. Very interesting. This is an example of how just about any topic can become interesting once you dig into it. I hadn't realized about building high ceilings to mitigate heat. Makes sense though, and explains why so many older buildings do in fact have such high ceilings in them.

@@EliteGeeks Excellent response!!! Frankly, I don't know why 2nd floors have higher ceilings but what you are saying make sense. Perhaps building codes required a higher ceiling way back when these properties were built.

In my experience - no matter how fantastic the views - after some time, most people eventually become accustomed to it and the view loses its appeal/benefit. Save the money!! Keep up the good work, Alan!

J3B The view is for visitors, not employees.
With a green screen, an appropriately located camera for background, and good quality AV mixing equipment, you can videoconference with other people, and they won't realise you are in sub-basement level 25, with three walls of industrial shelving littered with work material. The fourth wall is the green screen, and your neat desk in the centre of whatever spectacular view you have chosen as your background.

@@piggybank4875 Unless one is running a tourist business, I fail to see how a great view in one's office will attract customers. Alan mentioned employee morale and how a great view will improve that. I posted a different viewpoint.

    I'd leave immediately.
