  • Video covering a few days of work to regrade a backyard that was sloping towards the home. Really happy with the way it turned out!
Utilizing a Kubota KX71-3 Mini excavator, Kubota BX25 tractor & Terex PT-30 Skid steer. Also showcasing the new skid steer land leveler or land plane I built for finish grading and the pulverizer or gill rake to prep the seedbed.

Thanks Aaron! I definitely feel grading is the best option when it's available. Much better than French drains.

Yes it was a good machine! I've since upgraded to the asv rt40 which is similar size but a little more power and some cab comfort upgrades. I have quite a few newer videos of it working and definitely more to come!

@@NealORussa I picked up a PT60…. 2000 hours. Engine runs great, but I’ve been dealing with rust in the fuel tank (ended up replacing it) and some electrical issues due to prior owners neglect.

@@pjp80s ah those prior owners can really mess stuff up! My 40 came from a tree service company and I found 6" of dirt packed in the belly pan and 3 socket wrenches. I'm sure you'll get her going and working good for you!

Loved the video! I’m just getting started with grading work - so much to learn! Any advice on estimating/quoting this kind of work? I have so little experience it’s hard to accurately estimate the amount of time needed.
I’ve created a couple estimates that have a buffered amount of skid steer hours at a given rate but have told the customer that would be the max and if it it turned out to be less work, I would charge actual hours. I’m curious what has worked well for you?

Hey Marshall. Its all in the experience to know how long something will take with your equipment and skill. I have a spreadsheet I use to bid jobs that has unit prices for most materials i use, as well as all my equipment rates. I write in line items for each step of the work and estimate how many hours each step will take and what equipment or labor it will take. Then it multiplies hours x the hourly rate and adds the material costs and tax and overhead and everything to a total number. Make sure to include mobilization, hauling of materials, etc into your bid. Also need to account for the unforeseen issues. I do offer to work by the hour for repeat customers, but generally i prefer bidding a job. If i come out really well on it, i will sometimes give a discount during final payment, but be careful saying that up front, or they will always want a discount at the end. Good luck!
